Bodyguard Camryn MacKay goes to work like any other day. Except this isn't any other day.

When her client is attacked on the streets of Berlin by a strange man with unexplainable strength and reflexes, Cam is thrown headfirst into the veiled world—a magical world hidden from humans.

As if these revelations weren't enough, Cam discovers an unsettling truth: She’s part of this secret world. Always has been.

Tasked to figure out what really happened, she’s paired up with Leon, an empath witch.

As an unwanted attraction grows between them, they must figure out why a vampire is immune to sunlight before it unravels the fragile peace between the veiled factions—pinning werecats against vampires, with the witches stuck in the middle.

The veil has been parted, and Camryn never backs down from a challenge.

***

The Veiled World Chronicles is a slow-burn Urban Fantasy series full of magic, twisted intrigue, bittersweet coffee, and werecats with a bite. Join Camryn behind the veil. If you dare.

The protag here, Cam, is a lot like Kate Daniels -- she's been raised by a guardian to fight, survive, and run when things get bad. Unlike Kate Daniels, Cam doesn't learn until the beginning of the book that magic is real and that she has it.

All of that is well and good.

My problem is that we hear all the time that Cam is independent and gritty, but we don't really see that. When her apartment is broken into and she's kidnapped, she takes everything her kidnappers (the witches) say at face value. After their spiel, she lets them drive her home, repair her door, and give her the keys for the door. GIRL, THEY NOW KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE AND HAVE KEYS TO YOUR APARTMENT WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Then more and more bad stuff happens, and she just keeps trusting people. Sure, I think in the grand scheme of things she's making the right choices, but I didn't find those choices believable given her background spent on the run and how supposedly "strong" and "independent" she is.

This is a great start to this series! It’s a well written Urban Fantasy series that is full of magic, twisted intrigue, bittersweet coffee, witches, vampires and werecats with a bite. In this we meet Cam a bodyguard who is thrust into an unknown world, a magical world hidden away from humans. It’s an exciting and entertaining read and Cam our female mc is so kick ass, I can’t wait to see what she does next!

I loved the idea of a female bodyguard! This book started off very intriguing and it kept getting better! I read it in one sitting, never able to set it aside. Camryn has been hired to protect a very precocious young lady, a task she takes seriously and is well prepared for any eventuality, or is she? On their way home, the two are attacked and Camryn goes full out to defend Petra but Cam is totally shocked at how out of her depth she is. She had trained hard with her uncle and was confident in her skills but the stranger had her on the back foot. Enter a stranger, who helps Cam repel the attack, and suddenly Cam is even more out of her depth by his revelations! What I enjoyed about this book is the journey from disbelief to one of self discovery. I enjoyed the twists interjected constantly, keeping me on my toes and I found the characters interesting and diverse, as well as the array of magical beings. Cam's incredulity felt very real when confronted with the truth of what she is, although this opened a whole new level of intrigue! As Cam slowly comes to terms with her ability, the hunt is on to find who is killing people, especially after her uncle is murdered, except they find her before she manages to find them! I enjoyed how the plot progressed, layer upon layer, uncovering vital snippets of information, it felt like the author has been building a Lego set, as each layer is placed on the other, the picture becomes clearer. I can't wait to see how the entire "Lego" set turns out!

Didn't grab my interest. It had my pet peeve of the character needing to process the information dumped on them. I can't picture anyone holding up their hand and saying to a friend (or even stranger), "Hang on, I need a minute to process this."

This is book one of The Veiled World Chronicles series and the main character is Camryn Anker (MacKay), who works as a bodyguard for Kenau Security Europe, one of only a handful of female bodyguards in the game. Her latest client is a young woman called Petra, who insisted on a human bodyguard, at her mother’s insistence that she have one. The human part becomes much clearer later on, after some revelations come about. Camryn has lived and worked in Berlin for a few years and is wondering if it might be time to move on, something her guardian, Edwin Anker, had always instilled in her. He had become her guardian after both her mother died when she was very young. She never really knew her father and Edwin had home schooled her, giving her lessons in martial arts, defence and so much more, that made the job she currently did, perfectly suited to her. When she and her client are attacked by a very strong and surprisingly fast moving man, Camryn is helped by a stranger, Leon Nasri, who shines a bright light device at the man. But it is Camryn’s gun that has the attacker running off. Leon tries to get Camryn to go with him, but with her adrenaline up, she isn’t happy to go with a stranger and hits out.
Failing in her job to protect her client, finds her losing her job. She knows little about her family’s history, all she knew was that her mother Lorelei MacKay was from Scotland and her father Abrax was from Egypt, but she didn’t know anything about him, or if he was even alive or dead. Leon hangs about and finds Cam again but she isn’t keen to listen. Finding herself knocked out and taken to see Saga, the leader of the witch faction, soon leads to the revealing news about the veiled world and her own part in it, which she was completely unaware of. She soon learns that witches, vampires and shifters are real and that she is also a witch, but one without any powers of her own! She is a very rare Shadow witch, which were thought to have been wiped out in a war a few centuries before. This is probably why her guardian was probably so secretive and they often moved, not wanting her to be found or her ability to be uncovered. She is paired with empath witch Leon, to try and train her in using her powers, which shield her from others magic and makes their own magic useless.
They need to find out how this vampire was out in the sunlight and whether it was Petra, the oldest child of Rosamund, the Solis, the leader of the werecats, or Camryn was his real target and if there are any more creatures like him out there. Leon may find being around Cam really peaceful, due to the effects of her magic, as does his daughter Noelle, but whether this is the only reason behind his attraction to her, is unclear. Another witch is killed after trying to meet with Cam to deliver a warning to her, but it is when a vampire close to Petra is killed, that the fragile peace between all the factions in the veiled world could quickly unravel. The werewolves are staying fairly neutral, and this leaves the werecats up against the vampires, with the witches in the middle trying to stop any fighting. Vampire are hard to kill and the one that died was with Petra, a werecat, so blame is rising against her faction and these aligned with them. The danger from the unusual type of vampire, also thought to have been extinct, may bring even more unrest amongst the factions and death for Camryn due to her unique ability. So much more to come from this series and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Worldbuilding:
I really appreciate books where the main character isn't aware of magic, or in this case: the veiled world. It means we get to explore and discover everything alongside our cast. And while that might sound easy, don't forget that the author also needs to set the stage and keep the story moving forward. In my opinion, it was well executed. There wasn't an information dump, but we got eased into it (as much as we could). While there is of course still a lot to learn about the veiled world, we knew enough for this instalment to unfold without any issue.

Character development:
I feel that Cam was in a position many of us would loooooved to be in... well, sort of. Finding out you're part of the magic world you didn't even know existed... yay!
I would say she handled herself pretty damn good :) (I am trying really hard not to spoil anything here!) Camryn knows what she believes in, she knows her right from wrong and she fights for it. For me she has grown a lot during this instalment, maybe not as much in power, but more into herself, like she fits better in her own body.
Of course, we can't help but thank Leon for a big part of that as well ;) I really liked him and I hope we get to know a lot more about him in the next instalments.
All the characters (main and side) felt real and believable, they each had their characteristics and were a lot of fun (I'm looking at you werecats!).
I do have to say though (and maybe this is a tiny spoiler, I don't know)... I really don't like Stefan, there is something, definitely, off about him... hmmmmm...

Pacing and flow:
This was actually really good. The book isn't that long, though with all that was going on it never felt rushed. The story had time to tell its part and we were just along for the ride :)
Great balance between action and conversations.

The book:
The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors. The dialogues were sound, as were the settings. In other words, it all made sense :)
The book was 193 pages long, spread over 27 chapters and mostly told from Cam's point of view.

Final thoughts:
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book (courtesy of the author and Booksirens) and I was pleasantly surprised by this instalment! It had a lot going on, the characters were well fleshed out and felt believable and I felt part of it all. I'm looking forward to the next book!

I find it amazing how Rivers can take such a common premise and turn it into a different, unique and exciting book. Cam is the kid who lost her parents at a young age and was trained as a fighter, but kept in the dark about her family's true identity and her place in the veiled world. Yep, she's special. But this one does not follow the well worn tropes. Taking place mostly in Germany, it puts a different spin on the supernatural elements and does so in a really well conceived world with some excellently drawn, memorable characters.

I liked that that Cam was trained from childhood and had honed skills and reflexes. Also that at 27 (if I did the math right) she is a grown adult and comes of as someone who has had to rely on her skills for a while and knows how to adapt and roll with the punches. The love triangle felt a little forced, but totally works with how she would be pulled. I actually liked the contrast between her existing and new developing relationships as it served to further show the reality she is dealing with.

This is the first book in the Veiled Wold Chronicles and while there is a lot of world building, there are no info dumps. This is a full action ride with an edge of your seat plot as the MCs work to discover who the mysterious attacker is and neutralize them. While the major immediate conflict of this book is resolved, it is done in a way that starts to set up some huge overarching plots and questions for the next book to answer. So this can be read as a standalone, it does not leave you hanging mid-story, but you will want to stand by for the next installment.

Good

Camryn is a bodyguard, with a client who seems bound and determined to get herself into trouble. Only, when trouble comes, Cam finds herself facing monstrous enemies, and a dangerous world she never knew existed, even as she is part of it!
Learning that witches, vampires, and shifters are real is one thing, finding herself in danger from them is quite another; and Cam’s personal history is only part of the mystery…

Cam is an interesting character. Her upbringing is unusual, but has made her strong- though unfortunately also isolated. It has also left her at a bit of a disadvantage as far as the magical world is concerned- she knows nothing, and that in and of itself can be dangerous!
She has several people in her life though, one romance with a human, a couple of new friends, and those who helped to raise her. Her new friends are the most interesting, the romance doesn’t get much time due to other events, but seems fairly solid for now.
Most of the story is really based around the events that brought Cam into the “veiled” world of those other-than-human, and this aspect of the story is filled with action, adventure, mystery, and a dose of intrigue.
It makes for an engaging story, with likable characters, and a fairly fast moving plot line.
This is a great read for those who enjoy urban fantasy, and want something a little different- the authors have given their world a slight twist that was quite enjoyable.

This book confirms what I thought I already knew....I really enjoy young adult literature about strong women and the supernatural. Camryn is a young woman who works as a bodyguard who learns that not only is she a shield witch, but also that there is an entire world of supernatural creatures, including werewolves, werecats, vampires, and more that she had not known existed. The author provides a lot of background information about the characters and supernatural life, and it will be interesting to see how this information is handled in the next books. There are tough moments for Camryn when she reflects on finding out that she is not who she grew up believing she was nor are the family members who or what she thought them to be, e.g., her uncle. Camryn's self reflections add greatly to the story. The author did a great job of referencing current events and movie personalities, e.g., Alexander Skarsgard as Eric Northman throughout the book. (Yes, I admit that I watched True Blood!) I enjoyed the author's writing style, e.g., the vocabulary and punctuation she used to add emphasis throughout the story. I loved reading "for all intents and purposes" used correctly! A great start to what I believe will be a successful series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Camryn MacKay is a bodyguard trained by the uncle who raised her. She is escorting her client home from a nightclub when they are attacked by a man stronger and faster than anyone she has ever encountered. After she loses her job she is asked to an interview which will change her view of the world as she knows it. They call it the veiled world, where magic is real and creatures she thought were imaginary are real and it's existence is hidden from humans. As if that isn't enough she will get a job, and a partner. His name is Leon, and he's an empath witch. Their task is to find out the truth about the attack that revealed her connection a world she didn't know existed.
I thought all of these characters were well written and compelling. The interactions between Cam and Leon, the attraction that develops, and Cam's decision on how to handle it are especially fascinating. Exciting action, suspense, a little mystery, and an unexpected truth. Magical creatures and plenty of surprising twists in the plot made it hard to put this book down. I loved it and can't wait for the next book.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

2.75*

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Cameron MacKay is a bodyguard with some pretty good skills but when she and her current client are attacked by a strange man who has extreme strength and actually bites Cam, her world starts to change.
It seems that Cam is actually a stealth witch, a type of witch that other powers don’t work on, and she seems to be the only one around.
Welcome to the Veiled World. She now has a new partner, Leon – an empath, a new employer, Saga – leader of the Berlin witches, and well as meeting Rosamund – the local werecat leader and Ursulla – the vampire leader.
No one really knows if the attacker was after her charge or her but it seems to be her. As the book goes along, things get more interesting.
The introduction to the veiled world, works for both Cam and the reader.
This book has action, surprises, suspense, some humour and great characters.
It is an easy reading book that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Definitely going to continue the series.

In this, the first book of the series, you are introduced to the Veiled World along with the main character who has just discovered the Veiled World, which she appears to have quickly become a member of. She is a strong, independent young lady that has a mind of her own and uses it very well! She certainly is not afraid to give voice to her thoughts and follow through!

The book is well-written and flows nicely which keeps the pages turning. I really enjoyed that it was only 193 pages long. However, on the other hand, the story ended too soon. Good thing that I can jump right into book two. Nothing like a good binge read!

If you like a book with strong characters, smooth-flowing writing, and action threw out, then this one is a great choice!

I was fortunate to read the ARC of this book given to me by the author and am very grateful. That being said, my opinions are my own!

Fun pn escape read pg17

Off camera sex, heavy petting, brief nudity, movie level violence, murder, dismemberment. Witches and magic, shape-shifters, vampires, dhampiers, politics, and a funeral, mis-direction, hiding in plain sight.

Interesting world building with a fresh take on the supernatural world. We get what amounts to a PN detective/ enforcer story with interesting characters. The visual and audio versions are nearly identical so dyslexic readers or those using this as a way to improve english skills will not be lost.

Looking forward for more from this author and narrator parthership.

I really enjoyed this story, the first in a new series. Camryn's life is turned upside down, when she finds out that supernatural creatures are, in fact, real, and she is one of them. And a rare one, at that.

When she is attacked, and others start turning up dead, Camryn, along with a witch named Leon, start investigating matters, and Cam uncovers many things about her past that she never knew.

This was a great read with interesting characters (and a strong female lead) and an intriguing plot. I was drawn in from the first chapter, and didn't want to put it down. There is still so much to learn about this veiled world, and I look forward to reading more!

I enjoyed this book immensely. It has a similar premise to other books in the genre. Girl grows up not knowing her history or her supernatural heritage and bam her life is turned upside down.

The book more them makes up for it with whitty characters and a story that draws you in and captures your attention. The backstory is well woven as our MC's secrets are revealed and I am excited to see how she will adapt to her new reality as she discovers and accepts her life was never what she thought it was. Pretty much everything she has ever known was a fabrication.

She handles it exceptionally well in this book and has the making for a tough and snarky heroine.

Audiobook: This was my first experience with L.J. Rivers' and Embla Storm's work, and I enjoyed it a lot. Camryn MacKay was a bodyguard. While doing her job, Camryn encountered an adversary who exhibited unexpected strength and reflexes. Camryn set forth on a path of discovery which opened up new horizons and a magical world. I liked the varied characters and creatures which played a role in this unusual tale. There was plenty of action, flashes of humor, and some surprising twists. Elizabeth Klett's narration was good and kept my attention. I was given the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

I really enjoyed this story, the MC is relatable even though I disagreed with some of their decisions

I really liked the world and the hierarchy of the different groups, the political balancing act is described perfectly.

I wasn't able to give a full 5 stars because I found that there were some parts that happened a little too fast, and fights/confrontations that seemed a little too easy.

Despite the speed/ease of things the story itself is fantastic and I'm looking forward to reading more of the Veiled World.

New Urban fantasy series, with strong characters , witches, Weres and vampires. The reader is introduced to world through Cam as she discovers it so it keeps the story going while world building it. The pacing of the story was good and kept me reading to the end.

I really liked this story. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning and the bit of mystery kept me reading to the end. I loved the story line, characters and the series setup. Cam is a great character and loved watching her learn about the veiled world. Read it in one sitting just to see how it would end. Fun and entertaining with a bit of a twist to it. liked the setup and cannot wait to see what Cam must face next and what she will learn.

An entertaining urban paranormal novel. I particularly liked that for the most part, it was set in Berlin. I enjoy reading books that take place in a different (for me) setting.

The author did a great job with the pacing of the plot and with world building. It is clear that this is the first in a new series.

The characters are interesting. I look forward to learning more about them.

A solid, well crafted book.

Enjoyable. Good start on world- building although the details are coming at a slow pace. FMC is strong, but can be a little annoyingly stubborn. MMC is intriguing. Creatively written, easy read. I’m looking forward to the next installment to hopefully gain more backstory on the “veiled” world and clans.

Wanted to love this new paranormal series by European authors set in Berlin... but I couldn't understand character motivations or reactions. I would be a lot more angry about the lifetime of lies, the stalking and the preemptory employment dictates. Especially the passive-aggressive ones where they got me fired, and then didn't tell me until I asked.

An introduction to an interesting new urban fantasy world

I wasn't expecting much but ended up really enjoying this tale. A strong female lead whose true genealogy had been hidden from her stumbles into a world of magic and myth in the middle of modern Berlin. A standard mixture of witches, weres and vampires told in a fresh voice.
