Louis Sachar (pronounced Sacker), born March 20, 1954, is an American author of children's books.
Louis was born in East Meadow, New York, in 1954. When he was nine, he moved to Tustin, California. He went to college at the University of California at Berkeley and graduated in 1976, as an economics major. The next year, he wrote his first book, Sideways Stories from Wayside School .
He was working at a sweater warehouse during the day and wrote at night. Almost a year later, he was fired from the job. He decided to go to law school. He attended Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco.
His first book was published while he was in law school. He graduated in 1980. For the next eight years he worked part-time as a lawyer and continued to try to write children's books. Then his books started selling well enough so that he was able to quit practicing law. His wife's name is Carla. When he first met her, she was a counselor at an elementary school. She was the inspiration behind the counselor in There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom . He was married in 1985. Hisdaughter, Sherre, was born in 1987.
I always loved these books when I was a kid. I was excited to show them to my daughter, Dot, because they definitely influenced my sense of humour growing up, and reading them again all these years later I still find them hilarious!
Its brand of silliness is just perfect to me. The principal reminds the kids that in order to make traffic flow smoothly on the stairs of the school, those traveling up the stairs should stay to their right, while those going down should stay to the left. Brilliant.
This is a collection of four books that were released between 1978 and 2020. I'm pretty sure I had only read the first two before, and the last two were still great as well! In fact, Dot tells me the fourth one was the best of them all. I'm going to go with the first, as the nostalgia is just too strong for me.
EDIT: Reread this with Dot again and it's still great
Soooooo good. These are so hilarious and had me rolling so many times. I also think there are parts in the plot that are so smart and still keep you guessing.
To my surprise (and amusement), a younger family member is now reading aloud to me "Sideways Stories from Wayside School" from the set that I remember so well from childhood — and reading at the same age I was when I read it ... talK About tIming :D (30Nov2025).
Rating kept for nostalgia, but a really fun reread! I enjoyed the rereads more than the new Cloud of Doom, but I expect that was due to the nostalgia factor
Great 4 book set. This is the go to stories for bed time with my 7 year old. Then when I finish reading them to him he keeps on going until he falls asleep. Great books.
I only just discovered these books in 2025. I had no idea the original was published in 1978 until I read the reviews on Goodreads. I brought the box set for Christmas for my 10yr old son. They’re gold, the comedy is on point. Just lovely read out loud books and have a giggle with the kids books. If you’re on the fence, buy them. They’re a delight.
Hilariously funny stories from the classroom. From turning kids into apples to making them ride the kindergarten bus home early. It keeps you guessing what strange thing will happen next at the Wayside School.
