Four families.
One house.
An ancient fiend scheming to devour them all.

Learning the truth of a mysterious home their families have shared for years, four bloodlines come face to face with a frightening reality that soon leaves them haunted—and hunted. A sinister force brews in the spaces between these walls, and hell will rise if ever He's allowed to have His way.

Darkness climbing. No escape in sight. The HELM, an ancient relic imbued with power might just be their ticket to salvation until its eldritch forces backfire, digging them deeper into the grasp of the enemy.

Treachery looms as evil weaves its way into the minds of the vulnerable. And while the menace seeks to divide and conquer, families are forced to sever old bonds and sacrifice whatever - or whoever - they must, to survive.

Now, plunged into the heart of evil and strapped for time, embattled bloodlines seek and gather every magical defense they can acquire to stall the advance of their infernal adversary into the realms of man.

But like them, their enemy is not alone, and his underlings are just as bloodthirsty as HIM.

Cursed legacy
This book started off on a strong scary note and right from the first chapter I knew this book would be a horrific treat!
After several chapters I found myself wondering if any character was safe?

Dark events are followed by more darkness and more death. There are many haunting visual descriptions and if the words aren’t enough (which I think they are) there are also amazing illustrations.

I’d say this book is plot driven and builds the horror as the plot progresses. My only complaint is I thought some of the characters might have been overshadowed by the plot, and I felt like it was challenging to picture some of them, or just to keep track of characters as the plot progressed.

Having said that the book is still descriptive, it’s got a lot of gory/sinister details, and has all kinds of scenes which will stick in your mind
Many creepy dolls
Dark chasms
The realms of hell
Imps
Demons
And other dark beasts.

This is not a book you want to be reading before bedtime because it gets under your skin, creeps you out and you’re just not going to sleep after.

Highly recommend for any lovers of horror and anyone who’s looking for a dark, action packed, exciting read.
Fantastic debut book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I loved the premise for this book!! The curse was multilayered and interesting, and each chapter felt almost like it’s own self contained short story. There were a LOT of characters to get to grips with which did take a bit of getting used to, but I did feel that the book just continued getting better and better. With each new chapter I wondered what horrors would befall the new characters, and how history would come to repeat itself with the four families.

A good debut!

I'm pretty much exclusively a romance reader but this was a nice change. Everend did a great job keeping the perspective of each character identified as well as what year the story moved along to. The changes in time and character perspective changes kept me engaged as a reader because there weren't long drawn out periods of filler story.

Epic!

I had a blast with this one! My first read from Everend, but certainly not my last. Her writing is smooth, fast, and addictive. If you like supernatural horror, you should check out CURSED LEGACY. Highly recommended!

Spoilers / Review for Cursed Legacy by H. Everend (@harriet_everend_author )
.
Cursed Legacy is a cross generational story which begins in 1664 with Tyr Clarke and a family tragedy. We then roll through the years and centuries with the Helm and four families, the Porter's, Sterling's, Rosenthal's, and Borne's all connected by something which looms large over all. But what is the truth? And can these families defeat the evil which hangs over all?
.
Back in June I read Cursed Legacy. I hadn't tried anything by Harriet before but looked forward to how it'll play out
.
It draws you in nicely with the curious opening of Tyr Clarke. I will admit I had a hint as to who Tyr could be/ where the name originates. The subsequent chapters which form the majority of the novel works. It is both a long and over reaching arc as well as snapshots of history. The way the evil is slowly revealed works well I found. Everend balances the different voices and POVs in this story and really brings the story together. My one minor thing would be that at times I felt we were a bit hurried with the snapshots. At times I was hungry for more you know? It worked but at times more was needed. On the whole however this is a well constructed, fast paced and exciting fantasy/ historical / horror!
.
Overall 4.25/5 🐺
But how about you guys? What did you think of Cursed Legacy?

An evil entity haunts and terrorises four different families over generations of pain and suffering. In each generation they attempt to stop Him, but will they ever succeed?

I love a good horror and have been looking forward to it since I heard about it. It is a very different book then what I've heard before. Every chapter jumps forward a generation beginning at 1664 and ending in 2005.

A great fast paced horror. It throws you right in at the deep end from the start. I found is fascinating and amazing that Harriet managed to write each chapter in the different eras and make it seem so real and even the writing and dialogue corresponded to that particular way of speaking at that time. It was very clever and unique. At the beginning of every chapter Harriet made it clear what had happened as a result of the last chapter.

My only small issue was that because of the big jumps forward at every chapter I struggled to keep up at times and adjust to the new characters in each chapter. As soon as I got used to one character another appeared.

Trigger warnings: A LOT of death and gore!

Beware of HIM

If Evil Dead were a dark fantasy, you would get Cursed Legacy. This novel is exactly what the title suggests - a legacy of cursed families who over centuries have been haunted by demon spirits. This book begins strong with some serious scares right off the bat. There were moments when I was confused at who certain characters were and their connection to others, as many were introduced in a short amount of time. So it was hard to keep track of some of the connections. I do love that one of the evil antagonists is simply named Him. The action is seemingly nonstop as each chapter is in itself a new story. Looking forward to more terrifying stories from H. Everend.

DNF at 25%. This one just didn’t click for me - it veered too far over the fantasy line for my taste and I just couldn’t lose myself in it. A clever concept though, and nicely presented.

Ok, I have to be honest and upfront here by saying, I don't know how much stock you should put into my opinion. This was my first horror read in a VERY long time. I'm by far no expert on the genre.🤷‍♀️
.
That being said, this story spans multiple different generations, following the same 4 families, but I had a hard time keeping up with the characters and where everyone belonged 🙈 I found myself getting confused and back-tracking to remind myself of details.
.
It's very fast paced, which is nice, and the new characters are introduced quickly! Because there is a huge timeline that's covered I can't say I felt any type of connection to any character. They weren't around long enough before they were killed either haha which is the point of the story, so don't get attached to anyone lol
.
As far as the story goes, it's well written and delivers on the death and gore! There was an added mystery to the story on "Him" and what dark entity or curse was actually in place. It's not a horror story that ever had me "scared" necessarily, but it is creepy right off the bat and doesn't ever let up on the creepiness factor!
.
So, if that's your jam, give it a read!

Cursed Legacy by H. Everend is a unique concept for a horror novel. It follows several generations of four specific families, starting with the Salam Witch Trials period in, I’m assuming, a Northeastern Coast town. It’s never stated where, but for the time period that’s the assumption. I will admit, I loved the cover, and that’s what drew me to this book.

Each generation is trying to figure out their family curse and how to end it. Mostly, they don’t understand that someone cursed them at all and discover it through chance. Finally, the last generation, in modern time, attempts to go against the big bad by themselves.

I will admit, I got lost several times in the book. Unfortunately, while going through several generations is an awesome idea, we’re jumping around so much I don’t get invested in any of the characters. Plus, some names were uncommon for the time and the cursing didn’t fit the period either.

There are also a few instances of the wrong word being used (such as find for fine), but as this is the author’s first book, I give a lot leeway for this.

I’m a sucker for tropes and a lot of the horror tropes are used. For example, a house in the scary woods, the evil tree from Evil Dead, and dolls (enough said there). The pacing was good, which kept me reading.

I feel for a first book, this was satisfactory. It didn’t have the ending I was expecting, which I consider a good thing. I’m rarely surprised with any ending. I will recommend this book to any friends looking for a horror novel with an unusual theme.

great

Cursed Legacy is a well written story that has alot of unique twists and turns. I have a weakness for this type of story when it comes to curses, haunting and things like that. If your into ghosts, horror or curses then you will enjoy this. If you don’t enjoy these then check it out anyways for its story telling.

This horror story took me by surprise. Knowing that it follows the lineages of four different families through hundreds of years, I just wasn't sure what to expect.

But what I got was a main character unlike any other: a haunted property taken over by "Him."
Each chapter focuses on a brand new human character where they experience a series of devastating events. Each time, members from all four families do what they can to rid this property of evil...even if they aren't fully sure what it is or why they're there.

But every time, it's this property...the house, the asylum, the hotel (depending on the year and what's happened to the building on it)... that calls family members back again and again.

With viles of misty liquid, blackened doors that open up to an underground chasm, and fear around every corner, this story is right up there with the weirdly bizarre and totally creepy.

This genre is not my normal forte, but I follow the author on IG and am more than happy to take a chance and support fellow indie authors. I am extremely glad I did! This book grabs you from page 1 and won’t let you put it down. I finished the book in a single day and it was beyond amazing! If you read only one book this year let it be this one! I can’t wait to read any future works from this fantastically talented author!

***Super Late Review***

But thankfully I have notes! Everend’s debut novel is a hit! I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere that she creates and she does a fantastic job at pacing throughout. Everend has a way of leaving the reader with a slight cliffhanger as they make their way from page to page and I think it works perfectly in combination with making us care about her characters! I recommend this to anyone looking for some great indie books!

This is so amazing!

The book was scary, spooky and engaging.

With all the scary stuffs like the dolls and all.

The family was cursed upon and yet generation after generation none knew how to break the curse.

But the now generation goes on to face the bad and end the curse.

The story about the curse that runs down generation to generation in their family.

All the engrossed mystery of Him, curse and the dark entities.

The author has described the plot amd the characters very detailed and descriptive that I started imagining all the gory details....

And I started the book at night and wasn't able to stop myself from reading further. It makes the fear crawl under your skin.

Definitely not a book to read at night.. 😅

But one of the best horror I have read. I had no idea when starting this book that it would turn out so awesome and enthralling.

There was a GENIUS CONCEPT behind this novel/anthology mash-up!

I merged two genres because this is how I feel about the greatness I just read! It starts in the 1600s and ends in the 2000s. Though it follows an evil deity that haunts a handful of families for generations, all of the circumstances came with their own plight.

I felt as if I was reading an anthology when dealing with werewolves, cursed material possessions, dolls, occult, possessed people, and so on! But as you follow the same family names through the generations... these different circumstances are actually all connected! It's genius!

Giving each generations its own chapter to shine, made me root for or against the characters more. I found myself excited to see certain characters and items revisited near the end of the book! It was a fun, gorey, fast-paced read for me! I look forward to reading more from this brilliant author!

Amazing

This book was crazy good. I loved that you pretty much travel through time with the cursed families. You see different members of each family handle this awful curse set upon their family. This was an amazing read. This had so many twist and turns. You could not have predicted what was going to happen next. This is a great paranormal suspenseful and pretty graphic read.

This gave me Spooky Stories To Tell In The Dark vibes… but more adult and with a higher dose of spooky. The artwork at the beginning of the chapters was beautiful and really made me want to dive in to the next chapter.

The book review for Cursed Legacy by H. Everend is FINALLY FINALLY here! This book is a horror novel about a house that's passed down to four bloodlines that has a sinister force that leaves them being haunted and hunted! A sinister force brews in the home and he'll rise forever if He's allowed to have his way! Darkness starts growing and there's no escape! There's an ancient relic called the helm that has power that could save them, but the eldritch forces backfire and it makes them come even closer to the evils within the walls of this house! Eventually, the vulnerable are driven mad ad the evil forces make their way into their heads! The families are forced to sever bonds and make sacrifices to whatever or whoever they must to survive! The families have to gather their magical defenses to ward off this evil, but like most evil things, this force isn't alone, and the underlings are just as hungry as he is! This book had me gripped from start to finish and it had me feeling the dread that the characters were feeling. I gasped so many times throughout this book and had to stifle my screams at some parts! This was a scary book, but the fear was the fun part! Harriet knocked this book out of the ballpark and I NEED to read more of her work!!!!

Four families are connected to a house, and each other. Cursed people, magical objects, evil creatures, historical horror, a story that lasts 100s of years!! It was an exciting scavenger hunt to find all the objects in the middle of a horror story. Great mix of horror and fantasy!

Oooh what a journey this was! This book takes you over centuries - starting in 1664 and ending in 2005. It follows four families as they try to defeat the evil that has cursed them. Each chapter is a new year, a new generation and another attempt to end the curse. Each chapter is basically a blood bath as lots of people try and fail to defeat this evil.

Although there were alot of characters to follow, I liked the idea of the next generation coming in....knowing stories about their families past, seeking revenge or simply believing this curse was just some kind of spooky bedtime story. It was kinda like short stories but all set in the same place with their ancestors being the previous characters, and different reactions to the same evil.

I thought it was very cool how the author managed to do this over what was about 300 years, and set the characters / location / language realistically to the time period.

Although we shouldn't be rooting for Him, I enjoyed the comments about how He was planning on walking the earth again etc. I alway love devilish stuff like that.

As I said there was alot of characters to follow so I don't have a favourite person, but I do have a favourite chapter..... August 1890!

I also LOVED how each chapter had an illustration of a scene from that particular chapter. I kept looking back at them throughout.

Anyway, I very much recommend if you like horrors, blood baths, books that take you through time, family curses and demons! Basically all things horror!

(3.5 rounded up to 4)

H. Everend is a wonderful staple in the indie horror Instagram community and I was so excited to finally get my hands on one of her books! This was also my first e-book read on a kindle, which made the experience even more memorable. I appreciated all of the horror/action scenes and I never felt like I was bogged down with filler at any point during the story. It felt way more like an RPG campaign that you're traditional horror novel. That being said, it was difficult at first to keep track of who everyone was/their relationships with one another because there are so many characters in this story. I also felt like some of them got lost/fell by the wayside for the sake of plot/time jumps. Overall, this reminded me a bit of the tv show adaptation of "Fear Street" by R. L. Stine, which is a series I really enjoyed!

This is a horror novel about 4 families, 1 curse, and a story spanning an impressive 341 years. This book reads as an anthology with each chapter is another generation of the Borne, Rosenthal, Sterling, and Porter families. This book is full of bloodbaths, demons, untrustworthy families member, and so many secrets that it makes your head spin. The body count in this book is astronomical and there are some seriously gory kills. Throughout the book there are some creepy apparitions, creatures, and suspicious cult people at every turn. Overall, this was a 4 star read for me and an incredibly cohesive and impressive tale. If you are a horror fan then I highly recommend this book.

This novel is a wonderful addition to the October/Halloween read, although definitely not limited to the season.

The story is well thought out and the descriptions have haunting quality that keep the brain wondering about them even after the passage have been read.

I recommend for anyone who enjoys characters who move the plot and of horror stories that are action packed, exciting read.
