Someone is hurting the most vulnerable person in your life, but they can’t tell you who it is. What would you do?

When shy publisher Kate Kinley finds mysterious bruises on her mother’s arms she assumes the worst. Suffering with early onset dementia, her mother insists that nothing is wrong; it was just a clumsy accident. But was it an accident, or has her mother’s illness made her forget what really happened?

In desperate need of someone she can trust, her isolation and paranoia grow as the closest people in her life become key suspects.

With each heart-stopping revelation, Kate begins to realise that the perpetrator is no longer interested in inflicting bruises; they want blood.

Keep Me Close is a compelling story of gross immorality, a cautionary tale of how easily wicked people can take advantage of the vulnerable elderly people in your life.

If you love dark, psychological revenge-thrillers like The Sister-in-Law, The Babysitter and The Girl on the Train, you will love this twisty, sinister read. Perfect for readers of Gillian Flynn, Karin Slaughter, and Paula Hawkins.

This book had a good premise, but I felt it was extremely predictable. It centers on Kate, who insists on caring for her mother who has dementia even though she continues to get worse. Kate gets disturbing notes and her mother has mystery injuries and Kate has to get to the bottom of it.

I felt like while there were a lot of things happening in this book, I didn't really get to know Kate and couldn't fully connect with her- the story was told more in happenings than introspection and I would have liked a little more balance. While the pace did move quickly, it felt a bit surface-level to me.

I immediately pegged the culprit and was correct- I was hoping for big twist at the end to prove me wrong but that did not occur. I wished Kate had been less gullible, as she seemed to take whatever was said to her by any other character at face value.

Overall, interesting premise that didn't really do it for me. Hoping others will have a better experience. 2.5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! I devoured this book over 3 days, an enjoyable psychological thriller full of twists. I did really connect with this story as my Grandma has dementia and it is a hard thing to see a family member suffer with. It’s something that literally can go from one scale to another so quickly. Thankfully my grandma is in a wonderful care home.

The story was written brilliantly with such a wide variety of characters; from loving and caring all the way to being twisted and evil. Something I’ve found I do enjoy about a book is when the main character has a role in publishing or similar. I find it so interesting.

I’ve read so many thrillers and I am hard to please when it comes to reading them but this book didn’t disappoint. I loved all the various twists and my suspicions kept changing, I felt like I couldn’t trust many of the characters close to Kate which made it so intriguing.

I would have loved maybe one or two more chapters to read more about Kate’s new venture but despite that it was an all round enjoyable twisty thriller!!

Kate Kinely has a lot going on in her life. She's recovering from the loss of her father, brother, and boyfriend...she's caring for her ailing mother...and she's struggling to get ahead at her job. When her mother takes a turn for the worse she hires Ruby, a highly recommended caregiver. But once Ruby moves in things start going wrong...mysterious notes show up on Kate's door...damage is done to her property...and worst of all bruises begin to appear on her mother's arms. Kate must uncover the truth before it's too late.

SPOILERS AHEAD

This was book left a lot to be desired. The plot is an intriguing one, but story unfolded in such a straightforward manner there was very little suspense. All of Kate's issues start when Ruby begins working for her...so why it took Kate SO LONG to suspect Ruby was up to no good was beyond me. Then again it's very obvious from the get go Kate isn't the brightest crayon in the box (actually all of the characters are cartoonish and terribly underdeveloped as people). The book also kicked up a bunch of questions that were never really answered and the few answers the reader does get are pretty far fetched. I will say the chapters were short so the pace moved along nicely, but that's really the only positive thing I can say about this book.

I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you to Lume Books and NetGalley for this ARC.

Keep Me Close is a thrilling read. I loved the twists and turns and wasn't sure who the baddie was until the end. Kate's mother has dementia and is starting to go downhill quickly. Kate lost a boyfriend to suicide a couple of years ago and has just started dating again. When her mother's caregiver runs out on her, she finds a new, lovely woman who is a big help around the house. She feels so lucky.

But is she lucky? Her mother starts being more afraid. There are a number of suspects who might be in the position to harm a vulnerable older woman. When the danger spreads to Kate and her career, will she find out in time who wants to harm her and her family?

Great book - you'll stay up really late to finish another chapter!

Thank you Netgalley and Lume Books for the eARC.
Kate Kinley has a busy job in publishing and a mother at home with rapidly worsening dementia. When the carer who usually looks after her mum doesn't show up, she hires a new one, She's mourning the loss of her boyfriend by suicide,
getting nasty threatening notes, constantly fears being fired by her nasty boss, tries fitting in a new romantic relationship as well as suffering many other setbacks. I found it overwhelming and got tired of the constant negative happenings, to the point where I gave up and went to the end (I had guessed right as to the culprit). I didn't like Kate or the decisions she made, so I couldn't enjoy the book. Sorry!

In Keep Me Close, Holland produces a story about a dementia patient that is being harmed. There are plenty of people who could be the culprit. I enjoyed reading this book although I was able to know who done it before it was revealed. This was an easy read and I finished it in nearly one sitting.

Oh my word, why do I do this to myself? Keep Me Close is one of the most heartbreaking stories I have read in a while. Yes, it’s a fictional thriller, but I have a mother-in-law who suffers from dementia, so this book was just a little close to home.
You can expect a gripping read that will keep you engrossed from start to finish. I loved the story, even if it was heart-breaking to read what was happening to Celest. This book will keep you guessing while delivering twists and turns all the way.
Jane Holland is a “new to me” author and she kept me intrigued with this book right to the final page. The story is deeply moving, I found myself second-guessing all the characters in this book. The author tells this story beautifully and I am eager to read more of her books. I enjoyed how you never knew who to trust as Kate’s anguish dripped off the page.
Kate Kinley bumps into her deceased ex-boyfriend’s best friend, a difficult meeting that leaves him inviting her to dinner. Eager to start living again, Kate accepts. Opening herself up to Logan is not easy. Especially since her life seems to be falling apart while she is trying to establish a new relationship. When bruises and other injuries start appearing all over her mother Celest, who suffers from dementia, Kate is not sure who to trust. Soon she is completely isolated and no longer trusts anyone. Who is hurting her mom and why? Kate does not want to involve the authorities, fearing that they will remove her mother from her care, but she needs help?
Keep Me Close was extremely moving. While my heart broke for Celest and what was happening to her, I found myself angry and eager to find out who was to blame. I judged all the characters very harshly and never saw the final twist coming. I raced through this book in two sittings, and not just to meet my tour deadline. I simply could not drag myself away.
The characters in this book all appeared a little untrustworthy and I found myself suspecting all of them. The author did a fabulous job keeping you guessing which left me unsure about everyone – even Celest herself. She did a fantastic job making you doubt everyone.
I confess, while I battle with dementia stories, I loved this one. I was kept on the edge of my seat, angry at some of the content and shedding a tear for Celest. This is a marvellously gripping story that will leave you in awe with the final twist. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Psychological thriller fans will find themselves holding their breath as they search for the guilty party, and just when you think it’s safe to breathe again, the author adds one last twist. This is a five-star read all the way, you will not be left disappointed.

Keep Me Close is a brilliant psychological thriller by Jane Holland. The characters and plot are very relatable, which pulled me into the 'could not put it down' type of reading. It is the story of one woman's struggle to keep everything together for her mother who has been diagnosed with dementia. Celeste has reached the stage where she cannot be alone in the house anymore - her regular carer goes on holiday and the past comes back to haunt Kate all in the same week. Two unrelated events lead to a web of horror for Kate and Celeste; I was willing Kate to TRUST NO ONE. Then my husband asked me to keep the noise down because I was reading in the early hours (again).

I LOVED this book. It twisted, turned and kept me guessing right up to the end. I couldn’t put it down and when I wasn’t reading, I was thinking about it.

Kate’s mother is so sweet and vulnerable, and I wanted to get right in there and help protect her. I can’t say I agreed with all of Kate’s decisions, but her devotion to her mother and determination to protect her had me rooting for her every step of the way.

There were some really fabulous characters, from the charming boyfriend, to the warm carer, the slimy boss and the horrible but famous author. I was right in there with Kate, trusting and mistrusting them by turn, attributing motives, the lot.

This is a great read for the weekend when you have plenty of time. Once you start, you won’t want to put it down.

Wow!!!! This stunningly addictive thriller deserves the 5 stars.
I was completely engrossed in the story that honestly had more twists and turns and kept me guessing, then guessing again who the baddie was. I think I changed my mind about 5 times.
I was totally sucked in on the feelings of Kate and how she must have felt with all the things that were happening in her life and to her beloved Mum with dementia.
This book is out now and if you are a lover of thrillers you need to add it to your TBR pile now!!!

Description
Someone is hurting the most vulnerable person in your life, but they can’t tell you who it is. What would you do?

Kate's mother suffers from dementia and when her regular carer lets her down she hires Ruby. Her mother soon takes to Ruby and Kate is relieved as it allows her to start a relationship with Logan. However when Kate discovers bruises on her Mums arms she starts to suspect everyone in the house

I'm sorry to say this book could have been so much better. As the reader it was very easy to see what was happening, even if we don't know why, but Kate seemed to walk around in a fog blaming everyone except the perpetrator.

Even when you reach the end the reason behind the abuse is quite weak.

I just finished reading the book "Keep Me Close" by Jane Holland. Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
The book tells the story of Kate, a woman who is trying to care for her mother who has early onset dementia while holding down a demanding job in a Publishing firm, and starting a new relationship. She has to deal with finding a good caregiver for her mother, dealing with an acrimonious boss, and a rather creepy author. Then she starts receiving threatening letters which claim she was responsible for the death of her boyfriend. But the kicker comes when bruising and signs of abuse begin to appear on her mother's body.
In her quest to find out who is causing her mother's suffering, Kate and the reader begins to suspect everyone.
This book has many twists and turns, some expected and some not. Kate tries her best to remain strong but her homelife and worklife start to unravel.
I liked the beginning of the story, it hooked be quite quickly. The story had interesting characters which were well written, and there was alot of intrigue surrounding each character and their motives.
In the end, I liked the story right up until the last chapter. I felt the ending was too cliche. I have read ALOT of psychological thrillers, and I was disappointed because I suppose I was expecting a more clever resolution.
If you don't read alot of psycholocial thrillers, then I know you will love this book. I suppose I have read too many of these types of endings to appreciate them as much anymore.
Happy Reading Everyone!

Keep Me Close by Jane Holland

Keep me close by Jane Holland was an enthralling psychological thriller. It was quite menacing at times with the sinister undertones. Kate’s mother has dementia and has a new carer Ruby when her previous carer goes on holiday at short notice. Then strange things start happening. Is it the new boyfriend Logan, or the family solicitor or someone else?

Since her mother's carer quits, she has to find some help around the house. But since the new caregiver arrived her mother even starts being more afraid. Who wants to harm Kate and her family?

I agree with all the readers who said there is no twist, the abuser is who you most suspect from the start. However, it was still an enthralling story and I much prefer a well written albeit predictable story over one that’s made convoluted because it’s so reliant on a twist.

Wow! What a suspenseful, edge of your seat read! Kate tries to hold down a full time job while living with her mother, who suffers from dementia. After her mom starts getting mysterious bruises and acts like she's afraid of her own shadow, Kate is angry and fearful at the thought of someone abusing her mom. I was on pins and needles watching the story unfold as Kate tries to find the culprit, all the while her own life is turning upside down! You will not want to put this down! I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books by this amazing author! I'm grateful to have received an ARC from netgalley to read and review.

This was such an interesting idea for a book so naturally I gravitated to it. I did work out who the harasser was but not why and that was what kept me totally interested. That reveal was great, so cant say too much.

I did like the way the work place issues were brought into it. What I didnt get was the overdraft and how that needed to be there.

Jane Holland Keep Me Close Lume Books. 2021.

Kate has suffered the deaths of her father and brother and the suicide of her partner, David. However, she has a promising career, working full time as an editor in a publishing company. Despite her mother having dementia, Kate is enabled in her career as a carer and a house cleaner deal with many of her mother’s needs. The novel begins with Kate observing David’s friend, Logan, in the street as she hastily purchases items for her mother after a hard day at work. Failing to avoid this reminder of the past, she soon welcomes Logan into her life. When her mother’s carer does not arrive for an evening when Kate and Logan plan to go out, Kate falls back on an alternative, based on a friend’s past suggestion. Ruby becomes the permanent carer, and member of the household, the previous carer seemingly having gone on an extended holiday.

When Kate’s mother shows signs of fear, and physical abuse, Kate becomes suspicious of the family lawyer. He has suggested that Kate’s attempt to take power of attorney is dependent on her mother’s consent. Similarly, the other professional involved in the case, the doctor, insists on the right of a person with dementia to have their opinions treated with respect. Ill at ease with these sentiments, and with figures lurking in the garden, a broken security light, threatening and abusive notes about David’s death, and difficulties at work, Kate’s life spirals downwards.

I found Kate a worryingly unsympathetic character. She is balancing difficulties at work with a misogynist boss and brutal author with concerns about her mother’s needs, and the entry of a new person into her life. At the same time, her background of guilt about David’s suicide, and loss of him and her father and brother, provide reasons for her behaviour. However, despite features that would usually elicit my compassion, I could not warm to this character. I felt that Kate appeared remarkably uncaring, despite her protestations of concern for her mother. She becomes quickly involved with Logan, attempts to involve the cleaner (who is somewhat surly) in her mother’s care, and does not follow up on her mother’s fears when her career is at stake. At work, she seems reluctant, to the level of absurdity, in dealing with the misogynist behaviour of her boss and author. Drink appears to be her ‘go to’ support, despite knowing that she has both professional and domestic issues to deal with. There is the occasional nod to a feminist approach to these problems, but these are swiftly followed by Kate’s actions that undermine any notion of her strength and determination to be self-reliant.

The plot has some strengths and weaknesses. Early in Kate and Logan’s relationship their discussion shows a glimpse of the woman Kate has been – someone who helps others, is passionate about healthy living, and a pleasant companion. These observations help demonstrate the negative impact of David’s suicide on Kate’s current conduct. Moving on to the detection elements of the plot, although several characters exhibit suspicious traits, the perpetrator of the notes, cruelty and frightening episodes is somewhat predictable. To be fair, the explanation advanced for this behaviour has some authenticity, and there are some moments in which the intention is well hidden.

I found Keep Me Close an unsatisfying read. I would have liked to have found Kate an engaging character, after all she is contending with issues that are part of a modern woman’s life: conflicts between work and domestic demands; the need to organise care, whether it is for children or an aged parent; relationships that leave unease behind them, and the need to develop new friendships; death of loved ones. Unfortunately, some of the epithets hurled at her by the perpetrator near the end of the novel rang a little too true. That these were from a character whose behaviour is indefensible is rather disconcerting about a main character with whom a reader is expected to identify, or at least feel sympathetic.

A huge thank you to the author, Lume Books and Random Things Tours for allowing me to be part of the blog tour!

Synopsis:

What would you do if someone was hurting the most vulnerable person in your life and they can’t say who it is? This is exactly what Kate Kinley has to face when she finds mysterious bruises on her mother’s arms. Suffering with dementia, her mother is adamant that it was an accident but Kate is worried her dementia is making her forget what is happening to her. Isolation and paranoia grows, she can’t trust anyone and the closest people in her life become suspects. It is not long before she learns the perpetrator doesn’t just want to inflict bruises, they want blood too.

Review:
The thing that really caught my attention of this book was the description but also how close to home this read would be for me as I have a family member who is struggling with the awful thing that is dementia. Therefore, I had the pick this book up and I’m very glad I did.

It doesn’t take you long into the story to feel the tension begin to build and I found myself instantly wary of all the characters, I generally couldn’t trust any of them which I liked!

I really did feel for Kate and how she had to try juggle everything, wondering if she was doing right for wrong. I’ve seen this with my own family members so everything really did resonate with me on another level. The battle Kate’s mum was facing in this story is quite scary because people have to battle this on a daily basis and sadly some do suffer at the hands of those, they think they can trust.

Kate resonated with me for another reason too, I could see myself in her. I was screaming on the inside at times for her to stand up for herself but she would often just grin and bare it which unfortunately is what I often do and it does really need to stop.

I screamed on the inside on a couple of occasions as some of the decisions Kate was making also had me feeling quite frustrated, she was agreeing to things too quickly and this actually did put me on edge a few times.

There is plenty going on in this book that keeps you on your toes, it really isn’t an easy ride for Kate and her family and at times I genuinely did find bits difficult to read, not because I hated it but because of how it was making me feel.

Towards the end you can really feel the tense atmosphere, I found I was really worried about what would happen and although I did guess some parts, the climax was still explosive and there were plenty of twists and turns along the way. This book definitely matches the criteria of a psychological thriller. I devoured this gripping story line in two sittings and was simply captivated by it all.

Caring for a parent with dementia is never easy. Kate has had a number of people taking care of her mother who is rapidly deteriorating. After her longtime care giver disappears, Kate is pleased to find Ruby. She is the perfect answer and is given a room in the house to help compensate for the many hours she spends with Kates’ mom.

Kate desperately works to keep her mother at home and under loving care and protection. Logan is a handsome suitor and Kate allows herself to date. A solicitor clouds the care issue because he is “her mothers’” solicitor and not hers. The relationship clouds the overall tension and Kate’s good intensions.

The main character is portrayed as a very tenuous personality whose relationships are always under scrutiny. Her boss is a true self-centered narcissist who does not like women.

I enjoyed the novel but got a little tired of Kate’s inability to stand up for herself. She also tends to procrastinate in reporting events that scare and concern her. Rather than report the abuse of her mother to the police she hesitates because she feels that they will think she is the perpetrator. Wallowing in self doubt and letting others push her around got a bit tiresome and allowed some interest to wane. 3 stars - CE Williams

This is a book that will keep you guessing till the end; the tension and fear for the main character’s life it makes the book impossible to put down.
Let’s start from the beginning, Kate Kinley is not a very brave woman, she has lost so many people around her that she’s scared to live and be loved. She really cares for her mother who has early onset dementia, but her life is not easy, working as an editor with a horrible boss makes her days stressed and almost depressed. Everything will change when she meets an old friend, literally, her life will change forever, for the worst.
This is one of those stories where you can’t trust anyone; who would want to threat Kate’s life? The new boyfriend, the new carer of her mother or the “old friend” accountant? Really, there are so many suspects and threatening situations that I even thought that they were all three working together! Of course I’ll not reveal anything, just to advise you that you can trust no one!
I know that Kate seems a little bit lost and vulnerable, but I think if I was in her skin I would be the same. Losing her father, brother and boyfriend doesn’t have to be easy; then taking care of her mother and a bully boss. Believe me, even the most brave person would be tired of fighting, it’s time for her to breath a little, don’t you think? I’ll admit that I read this book in one sit, easy to enter the story but impossible to leave it alone!
If you are looking for a non-sleep night read, you should start reading this book, you’ll love it!

Thank you to Netgalley and lume books for giving me the pleasure of reading this book before publishing date. This is my own personal opinion of the book and mine alone. Well it was a interesting book that I felt was medium paced with just enough to keep me ticking over and not becoming bored. I can’t say it actually gripped me that I could not put it down because it didn’t. I certainly didn’t like it someone was miss treating Celeste having onset of dementia. The author I felt got that across in a good way about someone bursting her. From right from the beginning I did not like Ruby’s character. I felt the author had done a exceptional job of describing Ruby as someone not to trust. Although it wasn’t said I picked up something wasn’t quite right. It could have been going round. Giving people powers they di not pisses. I did think Logan and Kate were rushing into something when logonn as Kate to marry him. I know they say once you know you know. Overall a decent story line. It would have been a lot more believable if there was actually a reason Celeste to be hurt. Sorry don’t buy it just because Ruby had fallen I love with David. Seemed a bit ludicrous reason to actually go for someone behind knew kates mother than Rachael to try to take on the authority,s not someone who just. Fell in love with him. Also to keep riding around. Blaming Kate just didnt feel like it was acadiquate resin to go to all the trouble she did. Still not a bad read

Keep Me Close was a great suspenseful thriller, that was hard to put down! Kate Kinley is incredibly hardworking both at her job at a successful publishing house, and taking care of her mother who is suffering from early onset dementia. However, taking care of her mother is taking its toll. When Kate discovers odd bruises on her mother’s arms, she starts to question those closest to her. Is someone really hurting her mother, or are they just accidents like her mother insists? How far would you go to help the person you love most?

Keep Me Close was such a captivating read right from the start. There are questionable characters that leave you wondering throughout the whole story. Kate is a relatable character who is struggling to offer the best care for her mother, stay afloat in her publishing career, and dealing with her own personal grief from losing her boyfriend, father and brother.

My only drawback would be that I found some characters undeveloped when it comes to their backstories and/or could not emotionally invest in them as I would have liked.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

In desperate need of someone she can trust, her isolation and paranoia grow as the closest people in her life become key suspects.
With each heart-stopping revelation, Kate begins to realise that the perpetrator is no longer interested in inflicting bruises; they want blood.

Wow!!! What a read this was
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
I literally could not put this down and read in one sitting.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.

I really felt for the main character Kate in this story. Her family suffers a tragedy that nobody should have to endure and then she has her own personal tragedy on top of that. Shortly after that her mother falls ill with early onset dementia. Now she's her mother's primary care with the help of a part time caretaker.

Shortly after the regular caretaker flakes, Kate must trust her mother's care to another. A woman who is seemingly perfect on the outside, but holds a dangerous secret behind those kind eyes. A secret that Kate would never in a million years guess or even fathom.

With this new found sense of comfort at her mother being cared for Kate is finally ready to try and incorporate normal activities into her life. Activities that she's convinced herself that she doesn't need in order to live a happy and fulfilled life.

Kate soon realizes that she should have kept her guard up. Should have been more careful about who she let into her life and her house. Now when things start going wrong and her mother starts getting her, Kate's not sure who she can trust.

A thrilling and thought inducing book. Keep Me Close had me racing to find out who and why.
