As I consider the author a dear friend to me, it is hard for me to be completely unbiased in this review. But I will try my best!

In my eyes Doomwolf is a story of friendship, adventure and self-discovery. Ulmar is a warrior who lives in a world where the people eke out a meager existence. Where his clan resorts to exiling people during the winters just to make sure that the food will last until spring. One day Ulmar stumbles upon a wizard named Aldred who stems from the south. A civilized land which, in contrast to Ulmar's lands, has no shortage of resources. Aldred has lost all of his companions and eventually Ulmar decides to join Aldred on his quest (he's just a good guy like that). Along the way, Ulmar starts to learn that maybe life doesn't need to be how it has always been in the north...

The friendship (or bromance) between Ulmar and Aldred is really quite cute! One being a hulking (but friendly) brute and the other a civilized wizards apprentice. This leads to some genuinely funny interactions where Aldred is showing Ulmar the finer things of civilized life. I think this "clashing of worlds" aspect was my favorite part of the story!

A lot of the book feels like it's taken up by various "side quests", but I actually don't mind this at all! My favorite chapters were actually one of these side quests. I can imagine that this was a deliberate decision to flesh out the relationships before commencing on the main quest and that the next book will focus more on the main objective. But honestly, I wouldn't mind more side quests either. It's just fun watching Ulmar and Aldred!

I was pleasantly surprised by the setting! It was much more of an epic fantasy world than I had first expected. For some reason, before reading, I was under the impression that this was a world closer to our own with some aspects of magic on top of it (something akin to Wolf Brother). But this is all out fantasy with trolls, dwarfs, elves and dragons.. and I'm all here for it!

So, what about negatives? I feel like there were a lot of characters that were introduced in the Tuakk Hold in the beginning of the story. A lot of names without much in the way of description which made them hard to commit to memory. This problem goes away further on in the story however.

Another issue I had was more editorial in nature. There were some text formatting issues in a couple of places and typos were not a rare occurrence. I don't think this detracted much from the reading experience though, and it's something to be expected when there is not a publisher and a bunch of professional editors involved.

All-in-all, a lovely little story! I feels like it's just getting started and it ended on quite the cliffhanger, so I'm excited to see what's going to happen in the sequel - Dance Wildfire!

It's always interesting to get to read a new author and see the start of a journey. Doomwolf combines strong characters with beautifully described scenery. I especially liked the two main characters, the strong and towering Ulmar Doomwolf that seems to be easily swayed into helping others and the thin and energetic mage Aldred who seems to be good at avoid thinking too far ahead and hence get himself into trouble.

We get to go along with them in a world that feels like its breathing on its last gulps of air. The mythos of the land pulls you in and get you to want to know more about Ulmars birth, his parents, the 2 wolfs that stalks his way but also, who is Aldred? The author has created a trail of tasty bread crumps for the reader, and its left me wanting more.

The tone of the book is on the epic side of fantasy, based around adventure and relations between characters. If you are used to reading Tolkien style books it will be easy for you to emerge yourself into the text, if not, just give it a couple of chapters and you will get there.

I get the feeling that there will be more stories to follow with these two opposite attract adventurers, and I am looking forward to it! Very good book for a first-time writer.

I love to read fantasy stories with a "so bad it's good" feel to them, and that's what I expected Doomwolf to be. But it is not bad at all, it is really good and I am happy I bought it.

Because this is not a story solely about tough warriors slaying big monsters, like i expected it to be. It is so much more. This is a story about finding real, actual, friendship where you least expect it. It is a story about finding hope where previously there has been none. It is a story about learning that maybe, maybe it is possible to break free from a life that's been destined for you and become a better version of yourself. It is just such a nice tale and I loved it (it also has the tough warriors slaying big monsters, so don't worry if you also like that sort of thing).

Also the world of Doomwolf feels huge and so, so interesting. I constantly had the feeling that there is an ocean of history that I only got to see a little bit of. Every little mention of another kingdom, another language or some historic event felt like I only got to scratch the surface of a massive library of lore that I just can't wait to learn more of. The fact that there is never a huge information dump, we just get tiny little bits every now and then, keeps it interesting and made me constantly yearn for more.

I have never written a book review before and am absolutely not an expert on story structure and things like that, but I just want to say that Doomwolf is such a surprisingly deep and wonderful and well thought out tale. It is definitely worth your time. I very much want to keep reading about Ulmar and Aldred and can't wait for the next book to be released.
