About the author

Rachel is a writer of words, drawer of pictures and champion of silver linings. She exhibits widely, writes tirelessly and frequently creates slightly unhinged characters.

Her written work includes children’s stories and poems, clever advertising copy and lots of other stuff besides. Her illustrative work is a smorgasboard of giant, hand-printed poems, mind-bogglingly detailed gouache illustrations and a cacophony of quirky prints and etchings.

She explores the lovliness of words and the magic of pictures, revelling in a world of jam-eating miniature bears and other made-up animals.

Her work aims to capture a free way of thinking - one which makes you feel anything is possible, a feeling all too easily lost with the end of childhood. When we’re all grown-up, sometimes we just need a little nudge to remember it’s been there all along.

*Rachel has also been an air hostess, a garden designer and a lifeguard. She often runs a really long way and was once invited to the selection of the British ultra running team. She also once won a date with Man of the millennium and has been trying to live it down ever since.

A book about why more isn't always better and materialistic gains don't bring fulfillment. The tale is written in a simple, age appropriate style, full of rhymes and puns. The illustrations are beautiful and whimsical.
My 3 year old loves this book a lot and I think he will enjoy it for some years to come.

'Buddyread' met m'n neefje van bijna vier, die het na zelf inkijken wel voorgelezen wilde krijgen, maar er absoluut niet van onder de indruk was. Of eigenlijk juist wel: hij vond het niks, of anders tenminste akelig.

De vertaling is goed hoor, maar ondanks m'n liefde voor de zee kwamen de krabbetjes en scharretjes me al na twee keer in eenzelfde rijm de neus uit. De boodschap (ik gok iets van: 'je zou niet méér spullen hoeven willen, het gaat om het lied dat je vroeger door je moeder gezongen kreeg en dat dan delen met anderen') heeft een hoog Hazes-gehalte - als ik dit al van Rachel mag zeggen, aangezien zij de 'merknaam' beheerst - en voelt bovendien beroerd moralistisch.

Gloomy boek, ik las het ooit al maar vond er na het voorlezen nog minder aan. Ik snap de aantrekkingskracht die de titels van Bright op een groot publiek hebben dan ook niet. Maar goed, dat hoeft ook niet, aangezien ze zich vanzelf verkopen en ik dan mooi tijd heb andere titels aan te raden.

Rachel Brightin "Lisää, sanoi valas" (Mäkelä, 2021) on ihan mainio kuvakirja valaasta, joka täyttää sisäistä tyhjiötään rohmuamalla aina vaan enemmän ja enemmän tavaraa itselleen. Lopussa käy kuitenkin ilmi, uskokaa tai älkää, että todellinen onni löytyy jostakin ihan muualta.

Vaikka perusidea onkin moneen kertaan ryöstökalastettu, ei runomuotoon sommiteltu kirja ollut omassa lajityypissään yhtään hassumpi. Neljäs tähti irtoaa Jim Fieldin keskitasoa hienommasta kuvituksesta.

Nur diese Rachel Bright-Bilderbücher schaffen es mich emotional werden zu lassen. :o Ich liebe, liebe, liebe dieses Bilderbuch! Diese Zeichnungen haben mich total gefangen genommen und fand es sogar besser als die des Wolfes.

Neúprosné letné horúčavy, ktoré sa nám v posledných dňoch doslova zakrádali za chrbtom, si z repertoáru mojich neprečítancov vyžiadali čosi milé, oddychové - čosi, pri čom by mi stačilo ležérne si vyložiť nohy, vypnúť a vychutnať si skryté posolstvo prekrásne farebného príbehu.

No dobre, neboli to len horúčavy, veľkú rolu zohrala aj prílišná zvedavosť, ktorú na scestné chodníčky zlanárili dychberúce ilustrácie usmievajúce sa zo stránok knihy, no slovo dalo slovo a ani som nevedela ako, už som v rukách obracala nádhernú detskú jednohubku Veľryba, čo chcela viac.

Viac, viac... Nuž, kto by nechcel - veľryby či ľudia, zrejme každý z nás chce čas od času od života čosi viac, čosi lepšie či väčšie, otázne však je, čo pre nás to tajomné "viac" vlastne znamená. Viac hmotných statkov, materiálneho bohatstva a nepodstatných zbytočností? Či naopak viac lásky a porozumenia?

V mysli osamelého veľrybieho mládenca Emila sa to materiálne s duchovným akosi prepája a šťastným (aspoň zdanlivo) ho prekvapivo nerobí prítomnosť druhých, ich milé slovo, nežné pohladenie či pocit, že niekam patrí, ale práve kopenie tých najzvláštnejších vecí, rozširovanie vlastného podmorského majetku. Hoci... naozaj?

Vábivo pôsobiace mušle všakovakých tvarov, trblietavé cetky a kde-tu zatúlaný poklad námorníkov či petrofarebné koraly. Emil to chce všetko a ešte viac. Hrabe, zhromažduje a kopí, zbierka vzácností sa mu pomaly ale isto rozrastá, no jemu to akosi stále nestačí, skutočné šťastie ho miľovými krokmi obchádza. Po čom teda vlastne tak veľmi baží?

Veľryba, čo chcela viac je milý, nenáročný a predsa poučný príbeh, ktorý tých najmenších nenásilnou formou učí rozpoznať, čo je v živote skutočne dôležité a čo si lesk privlastňuje len tak, naoko.

Musím sa síce priznať, že veršovaná forma mi trochu uberala na zážitku (z nejakého dôvodu som vďaka nej nedokázala brať text úplne seriózne), no myslím, že práve hravosť poézie bude pre tých, ktorým je kniha určená, veľkým lákadlom. Príjemná to jednohubka.

3.5 stars. A commentary on how easy it is to keep wanting more, to amass a lot of wealth and find it is ultimately unsatisfying. The author's solution is to give things to others. This is admirable, although it is only part of the story. Any book that might cause people to stop and think is welcome, though.

Wilbert de Walvis is een tobberig dier, niets kan hem tevreden stellen. Hij doet zijn best om het gat dat hij van binnen voelt te vullen met spullen. Telkens lijkt het even te helpen, maar de volgende dag is de glans er alweer af. Op een dag stuit hij op een prachtig rif, met zo ontzettend veel moois. De dieren in het rif zijn veel te druk met ruzie maken vanwege het ruimtetekort en merken het grote gevaar niet op. Behalve Klaartje, het krabbetje. Zal het haar lukken om Wilbert te stoppen en te helpen?

Een fijn prentenboek met een mooie boodschap. Leuk om voor te lezen aan kleuters, maar ook zeker nog geschikt voor groep 3. Het verhaal is op rijm geschreven en prachtig geïllustreerd. Weer een heel fijn deel in deze serie!

Morálne anti-materialistické ponaučenie ujde, aj keď toho mohlo byť viac.

Postavy na môj vkus ktovieako nevyužité (a teda skĺzavam z odhadu kniha pre 7-ročných na knihu pre 3-ročných).

Nenápadné vyústenie dilemy hlavného hrdinu – hromadené potopené haraburdy z podmorského škrečkovania vysypem na dno oceánu uprostred pestrofarebných koralových útesov, aby som sa od nich odpútal – je z hľadiska výchovy k ochrane životného prostredia fascinujúco hrôzostrašné až zvrhlé.

This is a heartwarming children's book. I love how the this book is being used as a character trying to find an object that will make them feel complete. As we know this is a real life experience many go through in their lifetime. Sometimes humans find other sources that allow them to feel "whole." But in reality those things are a short term escape and once it's gone. They will soon grieve everything that they avoided. But at the end of the day no matter how much you do, how far you go nothing will quite satisfy you. This is the whole point of the book. This whale keeps searching and no matter how much he searches he still doesn't feel like as if it was good.

I really really love the books written by Rachel bright and illustrated by Jim Field!

As usually the drawings are just amazing – these colours, the power, the characters. Jim Field is just an amazing illustrator and his drawings are just perfect for this cute story by Rachel bright.

I love the story about this cute whale and his new friends. As usual there is a message, but in such a likable way, that it does not feel as if it would be strong critic. And the rhymes are just amazing.

Deze serie boeken van Rachel Bright vind ik prachtig. Dit boek doet me door de illustraties erg denken aan Twee vechtende eekhoorntjes, wat ik ook machtig mooi vind.
Toch pakt dit verhaal me minder. Het voelde lang aan en wat abstracter dan de andere boeken uit de serie.
Ook het rijmen verliep voor mij minder soepel tijdens het lezen. Kwam het door de langere woorden of was ik er zelf minder bij?

Hoe dan ook, de achterliggende gedachtes, de boodschappen, van deze boeken, zijn mooi geprobeerd vormgegeven te worden.

V poslednej dobe som posadnutá veľrybami a tak u mňa nesmela chýbať ani táto milá knižka.
Veľmi sa mi páči jej ilustrované spracovanie. Taktiež mi príde, že je originálna v tom, že príbeh je akoby písaný vo veršoch alebo respektíve je to písané tak básnicky.

Je to milý príbeh pre deti na dobrú noc, keďže to je krátke a svižné. V príbehu sa vyskytujú aj rybičky napríklad a krásne sú zobrazené v pestrofarebnom obrázku.

A rhyming children's story with a message about not trying to fill the holes in our lives with material possessions. This held Catherine's 5yo twins' attention even though they own it and had heard it many times. There are some clever turns of phrase and I liked the illustrations a lot but I'm still scratching my head about one choice. Once he's ready to let it go, the avaricious whale dumps his collection of junky things at the bottom of a coral reef!

A beautifully illustrated children's picture book. The story has a lovely flow following a whale and his quest for treasure. The book has the basis to lead many discussions with children on topics such as global warming, sharing, friendship and belonging.
