David Burke is a mild manner something who tries to enjoy each day a bit more than the last. It dawned upon him at some point that life was racing him by and he wasn’t nearly as young as he used to be.
So now he spends his nights and lunch hours and any other free time he can putting down on paper all the stories that have collected up over a life time.
Author seems to be inexperienced at writing. Hasn't really thought out the main plot arcs and secondary plot arcs. This is the third book. The first was about Kyle, main character, being sent to this dystopian world as a reincarnated human, being abducted and enslaved without cause or merit. Then the Colosseum, his part time owners trained him, so that he would gain value and get to sell him off to the highest bidder. The first volume was named Gladiator, like the Russell Crowe movie. I mention this because like the movie, both the main characters are enslaved and become Gladiator Slaves. Apparently this doesn't bother the author at all (no cause for enslavement) because according to the author, the main character, Kyle, is so over powered (OP) that he can free himself at any moment. The reason I mention Kyle being a Gladiator, is because in the second volume titled Adventurer, until chapter 27 (of 32 chapters) Kyle and his all female revue, leave the city, and start their adventure (not as adventurers but as wanted criminals. So I imagine, this third volume will be mostly about adventuring, but since it is a third volume and not a second volume part 2, the author named this one mercenary (which by the way is a synonym to adventurer) (Both get paid to serve a client or clients.)(I do not know if Kyle and part of his female harem retinue, will all get paid, cause most are still slaves) (Even though it doesn't bother Kyle, cause he's in touch with his feelings and is OP.) (of course according to the excuses that the author writes, to me it's a dumpster fire). It has been a harem novel series for a while, apparently slaves have no problem in acquiring a harem of free and slave girls. Even though slaves are considered to be objects or property, the author has done everything he wants and can think of in this his erotic-harem-slave-war-somewhat-god of a main character, Kyle and his female harem retinue. Author is talking about threesomes and more. Too bad, Kyle is en-tuned with his feelings and more worried about pleasing his girl lovers than taking his God power of war seriously. Being a pacifist, Kyle has cried when killing the bad guys. His remorse is super hypocritical, but the author doesn't care. This novel series, has so many plot holes and is so irrational, that, I am ashamed to continue reading it. The only worthwhile things of all three books are the cover title page illustrations. They seem to be animated and too close up in my taste. Funny thing though, the main character is an ex baseball player reincarnated in this dystopia of an alternate reality world, and yet, all the readers see, in the covers are girls. I find it to be a total lack of consistency. Author lacks substance and his stories are flat. Fillers to get to the sexual relations with the female characters of this series. Positive is that it only has 4 books. This third book has over 400+ pages (and yes, I feel bad for the trees that have died to have all these books published), it has 32 chapters like the rest of the books, which makes it about 15-18 pages per chapter (rather on the short side)(but since the story arcs are flat, and not interesting, well it is hard to finish the chapters off.) Kyle, guy who is trying to fill the shoes of the old War God, needs 7 girls (cause he's not bisexual) to share with each of them a slice of his aura, divinity, godly hood, etc. Right now, he has two, maybe four, so hopefully he gets one or two more in volume 3 and then completes his lucky 7 harem by the end of the novel series. The sex that the main character has, is not really important to even him. Much less, the readers as a whole. I feel bad for the author and I apologize to all of the readers that have had to go through the torture of reading this novel series. My two stars are to the illustrator. I find the animated illustration to be incredible. Congratulations. I will complain to Goodreads, to be able to place ZERO stars as a rating, so that when a reader like me feels victimized by a novel series like this one, they can place a ZERO stars as a rating, that will make all the rest of the ratings become Zero as well (because of the law of multiplication by zero is always zero). Author is lucky ratings can't go into negative stars. Some should, these definitely should.
Introduction: From the frozen heart of HowlStrom, where the relentless winter reigns supreme and the magic of ice courses through my veins, I, Kiba Snowpaw, the Alpha Ice Wolf, present my reflections on a tale that intertwines destiny, divinity, and determination. As the icy winds whisper tales of valor and magic, I delve into the narrative of "War God for Hire #3: Mercenary" by David Burke.
Basic Plot Summary: Kyle, once a pawn in the hands of fate, now stands free, carving his own destiny. As he embraces his newfound divinity, his perspective broadens, revealing the vast tapestry of creation. With a team forming around him, he grapples with the weight of responsibility. Can he truly turn away from all of creation? The stakes are monumental, and personal dilemmas might need to be shelved. For if a team proves insufficient, the war god is prepared to summon an army.
Analysis/Evaluation: Burke masterfully crafts a tale that delves deep into the complexities of power, responsibility, and the eternal struggle between personal desires and greater good. The narrative is a testament to the resilience of the spirit and the lengths one would go to protect and preserve.
Characters: Kyle stands as the beacon of this tale, a character whose evolution from a mere mortal to a god is both awe-inspiring and heart-wrenching. His internal struggles, juxtaposed with the external challenges, add layers to his character, making him relatable and admirable. The supporting cast, each with their unique personalities and roles, further enriches the narrative, adding depth and dimension.
Structure: The story unfolds in a structured manner, with each chapter building upon the previous, escalating the tension and stakes. The narrative flow is seamless, guiding the reader through a rollercoaster of emotions and revelations.
Impact: The tale resonated deep within my icy soul, echoing the challenges, dilemmas, and triumphs that beings across realms face. It serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit that resides within each of us and the sacrifices one must make in the pursuit of a greater cause.
Hook and Thesis: The allure of the story lies in its intricate plot, philosophical undertones, and the moral dilemmas that challenge the reader's perceptions of power, responsibility, and sacrifice. The central theme revolves around the concept of divinity, its acquisition, and the moral and ethical challenges it presents.
Praise and Critique: I commend Burke for weaving a tale that is both captivating and thought-provoking. The character development is commendable, and the world-building is meticulous. However, some readers have pointed out inconsistencies, plot discrepancies, and the need for better editing. While these critiques are valid, they do not overshadow the brilliance of the narrative.
Evaluation: "War God for Hire #3: Mercenary" stands as a beacon in the realm of fantasy literature. It offers a blend of action, introspection, and a deep dive into the psyche of its characters. It is a tale that will linger in one's mind, challenging perceptions and igniting the imagination.
Comparison: While the tale is unparalleled in its essence, it evokes memories of the legendary sagas of HowlStrom. The themes of honor, betrayal, and redemption are universal, transcending realms and resonating with beings across dimensions.
Conclusion: In the eternal winter of HowlStrom, tales like these ignite a fire in our souls, providing warmth and solace. "War God for Hire #3: Mercenary" is a masterpiece that beckons readers to embark on a journey of self-discovery, challenges, and the eternal quest for knowledge. I, Kiba Snowpaw, the Alpha Ice Wolf, wholeheartedly recommend this tale to all who seek an adventure that transcends realms.
May the frosty embrace of HowlStrom guide you to tales that touch the soul.
The adventure continues as we learn more and more about the adversary that faces main character Kyle. As he slowly cultivates and become stronger and also closer to his lady loves we I can't help but think that it's getting more and more challenging for him. And not in a good way the adversary is coming and the gods of the world have their heads in the sand. Only time will tell what's ultimately happens but it's getting more and more drama and exciting can't wait to see what happens next.
This was a great story, but there's so many errors. Not so many grammatical, but spelling, and especially names! When you get your own characters names wrong it's very disconcerting. It's breaks the flow of the story and really harms my faith in the accuracy going forward.
That said, really enjoyed the story and can't wait to read the next!
The pacing, plot structure, and proofreading are all terrible. The interminable inner monologues frame the simplistic dialogue. The action shows a protagonist being slapped around while the text speaks in tones of victory. Yet the underlying tale has just enough life to keep me engaged and interested in the sequel.
I liked this book. The story progressed quite a bit and the MC became closer to his true potential. I liked how the concept of cultivation was highlighted throughout this book and how stagnation was an issue in Varden.
Damn this story is getting pretty intense I look forward to Kyle kicking more ass nothing is dumber than a group of old folks I insisting something be done for tradition just because always been so
I assume you have read the previous books, so you know what to expect. Kyle's journey and his transformation to the God of War continues. Bonds to friends and lovers grow and new characters join the party. The other Gods are not happy....
New characters and abilities get introduced, which brings greater depth to the world and creates interesting synergies that did exist in prior books. I look forward to what comes next.
An awesome installment in this epic series!!! Incredible world building, powerful enjoyable characters and first class adult fantasy action!!! More more more
The third book in the series was really good. I am loving the progression of the books, and the War God in particular has risen to the challenge. Definite must read.
It was a good story it seemed like the timetable was a little rushed but wasn’t bad. Some spelling or grammar mistakes but not overly bad. Looking forward to more
Love the world building and magic system I can't wait for the next book to come out. You will keep flipping pages all day like me it is worth the dollars.
Very good the plot is racing along and getting deeper and deeper. The characters are growing and maturing at a rapid pace. I can't wait for the next book!
… more more more more more. I really love David’s way of creating characters and worlds that you wish you could visit. The growth the MC goes through in this is awesome. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
