Eldon has made his first child. His first newborn.
But children can be so insolent. His newly turned fledgling has made himself hard to find. Will Eldon track down his first-born before things go terribly wrong, and the vampire council notices his missing spawn?
It was supposed to be a fun night at the movies, but Jimmy has gone missing. Jonah promised he’d look out for his younger brother, and now he must not fail to find him.
When Eldon finds Jonah searching for Jimmy, he’s sure his newborn has taken the boy. Now Eldon is certain Jonah is the key to finding his spawn. Can they both find what they are looking for? Or will teaming up with a vampire be a death sentence for Jonah?
It's been a long time since I read a vampire story, and even longer since I read a good one. That's what I would have said before reading Newborn by Damien Richard. Newborn is a bit on the short side, but that doesn't stop it from delivering a hard bite. The characters are well written and the immediate crisis of Jonah losing track of his little brother draws you into his unwilling and nerve-racking pact with Eldon the vampire, who promises to help Jonah track down Jimmy. Eldon has his own insidious motives, of course. This is the second piece of Damien Richard's writing that I have had the pleasure of reading, and I'm looking forward to reading more in the future.

My last vampire book was the Twilight series back in high school.
I discovered this book on a horror book Facebook group, recommended by the author himself. It was a nice easy read. I appreciated the multiple POVs and some backstories. I do plan on reading the rest of the series and see how it all unfolds.
This book would be great for those who want to start dipping their toes into the horror genre or looking for a quick easy read.
"Eldon has made his first child. His first newborn. But children can be so insolent."
With this thought we are introduced to Jonah and Jimmy, two brothers experiencing the night of their lives watching the new Star Wars movie at the theatre. It's been a long time since I've read a vampire story and part of the reason I think is because much like the zombie genre it was losing some of it's allure. I like my vampires classic and scary and suave but deadly. This is what Damien Richard brings to the table. As attached as you become to Jonah and Jimmy and their horrible circumstances you get to explore the vampire characters of Eldon and Patrick and what makes them tick in sometimes horrifying ways. Empathy is saved for their human victims but I still became attached and completely enthralled by the vampire characters. Well written, easy to read, gets under your skin and stays with you after you're done. This is the earmark of a great story and a great story teller. Will definitely be checking out more by Damien Richard.
Newborn, featuring a vividly developed cast of characters, delightfully gruesome scenes, and a healthy dose of suspense, truly showcases Damien Richard's creativity and writing prowess. His use of third person narration stunningly captures both the peculiar experience of being a vampire and standing in the presence of one. Damien expertly takes what is tired and old when it comes to vampire tales and finds a way to revitalize it while preserving the essence of what makes vampires so fascinating. As a Canadian, I deeply enjoyed reading about vampires prowling the streets of Vancouver. And, as someone who enjoys Star Wars, I appreciated the boys' choice of fandom ––the moment Jimmy announced that his favourite Character is Yoda, I knew I was going to be invested in that kid's story.
