I have actually been a long-time fan of Christine’s Youtube Channel and was so excited to be able to get my hands on a review copy of her book which I had actually heard her mention she was working on for quite some time.

Christine really does meld her passion for science so successfully with her interest in fitness and helping people reach their physique goals.

It has been such a pleasure to read her work. She is nothing but a perfectionist and her effort really shows. You will not only enjoy reading this book but you will learn a lot.

I always enjoy how learned she is (she can't help it you guys, she's a scientist!) but I also adore just how down to earth she is. This really helps me sink my teeth into the facts she provides in the book! It feels like a book written by a scientist who is one of us and who has also been through the ups and downs of weight and fat loss. (Yes, there is a difference. Don't worry, she'll teach you all about it!)

A thousand congratulations to Christine for her wonderful book. I know it's going to explode in popularity in the future.

I wanted to read this book because I'm trying to lose weight and eat healthier overall. I've done so many diets but I always feel hungry and when I stop them the weight comes back and then some.

I started doing a low carb diet before my wedding a few years back and it worked really well. My husband basically did all the research for me and set up my macros so I didn't really know TOO much about it.

After reading this book, I didn't really learn anything new except for how to determine my numbers. Everything else was a good refresher for when I start my new way of eating this week.

This book is great for beginners but also keep in mind this stuff might not work for everyone, just like any diet really.

Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for an ARC. All opinions are mine and mine alone. :)

3.5 stars.

What worked for me: I appreciated that this book acknowledged that people, and their nutritional and metabolic requirements, are varied and that many people tend to thrive on a particular balance of nutrients. This generally advocated a realistic, flexible, mostly whole-foods approach to nutrition tailored to one's own unique metabolism. Suggested macros and calorie counts were not drastic or unduly restrictive. In fact, the author argued against restriction in many cases. Quizzes and exercises made it easy to determine one's own macro type and there was an abundance of recipes for each group.

What didn't work for me: Unfortunately, there was still some old-fashioned fat shaming. While the author didn't advocate for extreme leanness, the overarching message was still fat = bad. Some careless language was used. In once instance she actually used the phrase "tipped the scales" to describe a woman at the shocking and monstrous weight of 150 whole pounds. It wasn't enough to totally derail the usefulness of this book for me, but those who prefer a more affirming, body-positive tone, and especially those with any issues around disordered eating and/or body dysmorphia, should probably avoid this.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review.

Well this book was a kettle of fish for me.

I imagine it would be alright for someone who is just beginning their diet journey, but as someone who has been around the block a few times, all I learned is that what I was doing before was actually considered right for my 'macro' type. But unlike what this book promises, I did not shed the pounds observing the diet for well over a year. The book promises you'll be seeing noticeable results within 6 months, more so if you exercise while on the diet. Well I dieted for well over a year, complete with exercise at least 5 times a week for 35-45 minutes at a time, plus cooldown and warm up time.

What did I get? About 10 pounds of weight loss and admittedly, smaller measurements that plateaued and never moved after 8 months. I also got stiff muscles, chronic pain (partially due to an old car accident injury being aggravated by all the intense exercise), and constantly reprimanded by multiple of my health care providers for pushing too hard and not stretching enough. Mind you I was stretching before and after each workout during my cooldown and warm up, which combined equaled the workout time. Oh and I would stretch during my lunch break at work too if no one was around. lol

In the end I was just constantly tired, sore, in pain, stiff, and not enjoying my life or my food, which then discouraged me enough to quit trying after a serious life event. It was no longer worth it. And boy did that yo-yo kick in.

So I read this book to see if it thought I was following the wrong diet path. Nope. Apparently I wasn't far off the mark. So what gives?

What I didn't like:

It's very repetitive. This book could easily be at least 30 pages shorter if the repetitiveness was taken down a notch.

It has unnecessary testimonials plugged in throughout the book, and then she talks about these people in the actual chapters, which repeats a lot of what the write up says on the testimonials, see my first dislike, repetitive.

It's very basic. Once you 'figure out' your macro type you maybe get a few dozen pages actually dedicated to your type and it's a gloss over how-to guide at best.

It wants you to view food as numbers. You look at an egg, it's not an egg. It's so much carbs, so much protein, so much fat. It's worrying. Particularly if you are someone who could be prone to developing an eating disorder and not know it.

Makes promises it probably won't be able to deliver to some people, like me. Promises about how much weight you'll lose. Promises that you won't feel deprived. Promises that this is completely sustainable for the rest of your life...maybe for some people it is. But the idea that I will never get a bowl of spaghetti again, and most of my calories is going to come from fat, is absolutely soul crushing to me. I don't like butter...but I do like bacon...hmm. But I LOVE me a bowl of pasta. Now if it said "cut down" and "eat a bowl of salad first" I would be down with that. But when it says most of my carbs are going to come from vegetables and low GI fruits... :-( No.

It's overly simplistic. This book works off the basic, 'burn more calories then you eat,' but it fails to take into account that your body is designed to resist change. So you cut 500 calories, your body does things like turns down the internal 'furnace' to try and make up the difference. It'll slow functions after awhile and this helps contribute to the yo-yo affect. You basically have to lower your weight and then fight your body to keep it there until it accepts that lower weight as your new normal. The older you get, the harder it is.

It alludes to things like marco apps and Flexible Diets but doesn't give any indication where to find good apps or what, exactly, a flexible diet is.

What I did like

I liked that it gives you the basic calculations to figure out things like your calorie intake and portions sizes for carbs, proteins, fat, etc should you decide to try this form of dieting and that it walks you through how to do them. I personally don't really like breaking down food to view this way, but I can appreciate how simple the author makes it to do. Still concerning though.

I didn't mind the tests she used to try and place you in a certain macro type. Though I'm not entirely sure what you were supposed to learn from the first test...

How the author does tell you that as your weight goes down, so too does your portions to keep the calorie deficit. Gotta fight the body.

The author does advocate for bulk cooking to help lessen the burden of dieting. The keto diet requires a fair few meats and fats, which mostly need to be cooked, but if you are someone who doesn't cook breakfast or lunch, that can be a problem.

The author also recommends intermittent fasting for some macro types. Intermittent fasting has been scientifically proven to help people who are insulin resistant but not yet diabetic. It also has been proven to help diabetics, but needs to be done with close doctor supervision.

And that's about it...

Conclusion

Good as a starting point for someone who has no idea what they should be doing to try and shed some pounds. But don't exactly expect the results this book advertises though. It may be easy for some, but harder for others. The test may land you in the right macro category, or it might not. People are more complicated then this book implies.

Unlock Your Macro Type is a master class for those looking to try this type of nutrition plan. Christine is a Hronec is a food scientist and famous YouTuber under the name guagegirltraining. She knows why normal diets don't work for every and has a plan to tailor a diet to your lifestyle, body and goals that is sustainable forever.

The only drawback is that there is so much here it was hard for me to understand completely some of the details. She always mentions that apps that track your macros are helpful but does not mention those apps by name. Also mentioned is Flexible Dieting but no explanation is given on what it really is or how it works. This is a great starting point but I think the average person starting out will need a bit more help from their doctor, a nutrition or a trainer.

While I was able to figure out what my body type is and the best plan for myself is, I am going to do some more research on recipes and sample meal plans and meal planning ideas before I begin my program. I have been eating all wrong and need to make many changes. The changes I have started have really made a difference in my energy level and my sleep cycle. I am very excited for the next stage.

Like many women, I’ve tried lots of diets and programs over the course of my 29+ years. I did really well on a really popular global program in the early 2000s and they changed their program and I didn’t keep the materials. I’ve tried low car, low fat, high protein, you name it, I’ve tried it. When it would work for a short time and then taper off, I’d get frustrated. I had found that I did best when I was eating a balanced diet with a mix of carbs, fats, proteins, etc. but couldn’t replicate my original success.

This book changes that. It helps you determine what is going to work best for you, based on YOU. What a novel concept. No two bodies are alike and no two will respond to a given diet the same way. Even more important, to me, is getting the right balance so that I can keep with something long term and keep seeing success, even if that’s just getting healthier and stronger at times. I’m going to definitely give this a try and am working on my grocery list for this weekend’s trip to the grocery store. My foods and choices for my body type. I’m ready and hv already recommended this book to a few friends.

CW // body image, weight loss, food {Thank you to @bibliolifestyle, @harvestbooks, @unlockyourmacrotype, and @gaugegirltraining for the #gifted copy.} ✨

To be complete transparent, for the last few years I have struggled with my body. And not just how I look, but how I feel - my energy levels, my ability to get good sleep, my productivity and clarity, etc. And, while I’ve finally found a workout I enjoy doing (just need to be better at consistency) - I have always struggled with food. Mostly because I know I can eat more nutritiously…and because I have a m a j o r sweet tooth. 🦷

I recently finished UNLOCK YOUR MACRO TYPE by Christine Hronec and enjoyed learning some basic nutrition and body composition science. This book is written in a way where people with zero science, biology or nutrition background can understand the concepts and theories. I am looking forward to trying to apply some of content related to macro typing and personal carb tolerance to my own life. I just want more energy, y’all, and am hopeful this book, which does not take a one-size-fits all diet approach, will give me some knowledge to help implement small changes in my daily relationship with food. 🍽

We’ve come a long way in the world of dieting and fitness. While fad diets are still trending, understanding the way our bodies work in an individualized sense is gaining traction as well.

So when I got the opportunity to highlight the new book, Unlock Your Macro Type:
Identify Your True Body Type • Understand Your Carb Tolerance • Accelerate Fat Loss, the timing couldn’t have been better.

First let me say this is not a book I read cover to cover. Instead I see it as a resource you can come back to often in your weight loss journey or even your weight loss maintenance. While the scientific framework author Christine Hronec includes is important, I was eager to get to the meat of the book (no pun intended). 😉

From there I took some measurements and answered some simple questions in order to determine things Iike my body type (Endomorph) and my Macro type (Protein Fueled Low Carb). The next step is putting these ideas into practice through the tailored nutritional program and other tips that aim to support my body’s best self. I am pretty good at sticking to o a routine in general, so I’m eager to see what the outcome will be!

Thank you Goodreads #hapercollinspublisher for the Advanced copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

For most of my adult life I have been able to maintain my weight without having difficulty. I was curvy and happy with my body image. From 2021 until May of 2022, I personally have gained over 50lbs. Due to a number of personal and medical factors.

I was struggling with the idea of using a fad diet. Winning this book giveaway was extremely timely. Understanding my Macro Type and applying these methods, gives me hope. I am starting my journey the day of this review.

Ms. Hrone's delivery of the Macro Types, is comprehensive. I am looking forward to learning to love my body again! Thank you again for this book, and to Christine Hronec.

Christine takes quite the in-depth, scientific approach to finding the right health plan for your body’s needs. There is a lot of information packed into this book, which at times may feel overwhelming to the reader, but I appreciate that she does include so much detail. That being said, it once again proves just how individualized health/weight loss is, because the macro type that fit me according to her data is not one that has worked for me in the past. However, those looking to lose weight or feel better without any chronic, complicated health issues may benefit from trying one of her plans.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Unlock Your Macro Type: Identify Your True Body Type, Understand Your Carb Tolerance, Accelerate Fat Loss by Christine Hronec is a well researched book that helps readers look at their unique situation and tailor a plan for themselves. I think anyone would benefit from reading this book in order to become healthier, even if weight loss is not the goal. The author does a great job explaining the concepts of macros and carb sensitivity. There are short quizzes that help the reader identify their unique situation. Good book overall. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.

This is such a wonderful resource to have on hand. It breaks down all the different kids of macro types based on your body type, intensity of exercise, and goals of weigh gain or weight loss. It includes recipes and exercise regiments. It goes step by step to map out your Macro type and achieve your goals. The author goes into through the first part of the book explaining how the body processes the three big players: Carbs, Protein and Fats. The second part of the book is the quizzes and breakdown of each Macrotype and the last part of the book goes into recipes and workout exercises. Very good resource!

Too much math.

At least the author is honest about recognizing that most people want to lose weight in order to look good, and her super-detailed plans are geared towards changing your body shape.

But the entire guide to macros and carb tolerance was within a very strict calories-in, calories-out equation, which nowadays makes me uncomfortable. And She insists on ridiculous amounts of exercise, beyond anyone with a busy life.

Also the quizzes assume you've already tried every other diet on earth and know how each one has failed your body. It asks about how you react to carbs or how hard it is to lose weight, which I had to take guesses at, which makes me distrust my results.

Unbelievably detailed and chock full of scientific reasoning. Her nutritional recommendations seem sound and I’m pleased she isn’t going for the big standard 1,200 cals a day recommendation.

However, the exercise the author recommends is a little crazy. I already do resistance training six times a week for an hour, plus six cardio workouts a week that range from 15-50 mins.

She would want me to up that by adding an additional 3 HIIT sessions PLUS making sure to get a minimum of 45 mins of steady state cardio in every day, on top of weight lifting six time a week.

I love the gym you guys but that’s so unrealistic it’s not even funny.

This is the first book I’ve read on Macros but I have heard of them so hence I grabbed this book. The author certainly has done her homework when it comes to macros and how different meal plans can affect your weight. I’ll be honest it’s a ton of info and very detailed. When I did the quiz it told me I was fat fueled low carb which I have to be honest has never been a diet plan for me since I gained weight. It’s definitely worth a try. I’ll definitely look up the YouTube channel. Five stars for uniqueness and kudos to the author for just trying to help others.

I love the book! There was so much information in this book and it gets straight to the point! Christine talks about macro types and how to eat and workout depending on your macro type. She also gives great pre workout and post workout ideas. It’s very detailed on the amount of grams you need on your macro type. I loved the tips on working out to lose fat, build muscle, how to bulk. There’s a lot of information in this book about the macro types and where and how you fit in that spectrum. I bought the audiobook and am buying a book for someone else.

Thank you to the Mariner Books and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. This book offers an interesting perspective and acts as a guide to a healthier lifestyle through a diet change. I would like to do more research about the topic of macro type (starting with the provided reference section) before considering trying Christine Hronec’s suggestions. Overall, it was an interesting read and those who choose to implement the suggestions found in this book might want to do so under the guidance of the functional medicine practitioner.

Didn’t finish it, but only because I’d checked it out from the library and, after about halfway through, decided I’d like my own copy. Will be buying it.

Even though I think the target audience is young to middle-aged women (though men are addressed), I learned a lot that I’m going to try to apply to my 70+ year old body. Understanding intermittent fasting, macro balance and building muscle are goals. I’d like to study, try things out, check out the videos and see what works for me. Explanations of the science are very clear and accessible.

I learned a lot about my specific body type and I can't wait to start on this new outlook.

It has a simplified test to figure out the carb tolerance and the macronutrients your body will need. It has a few interesting recipes (Filipino Adobo is included!) that I am eager to try. It also has a recommended timing of workouts and which type to do that will be most beneficial.

Lots of useful information. I mean A LOT of information. The beginning has quizzes to find out what your carb tolerance is and also what your macro type is. The book gives you lots of background on each type so you can figure out which categories you fit into before even starting on the diet information.

This is good for long term diet change lifestyle. Not about lose weight quick and deprivation.

I think this is an interesting approach to weight loss. I appreciate that it isn’t a one size fits all plan. I have been sick and so has my family so I haven’t been able to implement any changes as of yet, so cannot report on the plan’s effectiveness.

Thank you to Mariner books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I'm not sure it's for me, because I've never been one to diet with counting calories (wow the math on what my caloric intake should be blew my mind!). It would also be hard to have the foods needed. But, this seemed like a good plan that could work for people. It seems logical and it's laid out fairly well.

I've been dieting for over 20 years - Unlock your Macro Type has taught me that there is more to losing weight than counting calories. There are so many other factors (sex, hormones, lifestyle). I plan to use the techniques I learned to be a healthier me! I also appreciate thag there are downloads that accompany the book.

I love and hate this book. There is a lot of great information (but you'd better like science to enjoy reading a lot of it) and I can clearly see my macro type and agree with the premise. My big hate is that she never addresses a vegetarian diet. Adapting her principles to a vegetarian diet means a lot of extra work for someone who is trying to avoid eating the flesh of dead animals!

Fast, easy to read, and appropriate for non-scientists trying to make sense of macros, diet, weight loss, etc., this guide is a bestseller for a reason. This is a great choice if you're looking to understand and apply the macro science to your diet and weight loss/shape-up plan. Now, to put everything I learned into practice...

Not easy on audio, I ended up buying the print version. Interesting for sure. According to the macro type identified by the tests I took, my eating should be almost opposite of everything I have ever tried, which could explain a lot. We’ll see if I’m brave enough to change habits and if I see results.
