It was no small feat but Arthur, aka Brick Breaker, managed to pass the Combine and earn the right to keep his powers.
And so, his work as a superhero may finally begin, with his team, the Eon City Champions. Their first mission sounds easy enough: rid the Climb of all the baddies squatting in the abandoned housing projects, and they’ll get to keep the building as their new headquarters.
But as it turns out, the Champions are not the first team to attempt this clean-up mission. And the previous groups of superheroes that tried to do it were killed or disappeared in the strangest of circumstances. Moreover, for the Champions, the menace is not only external but internal. Tensions between team members arise, due to a lack of leadership, threatening to cause factions to emerge.
Arthur has no choice. He will need to take the lead, and organize this team of mavericks and misfits into a cohesive and efficient force. More importantly, he will need to find a steady supply of ChemX to help them advance their superpowers, to find out who wants to keep the Climb in such a dreadful state, put an end to them, and live to tell the tale.
I was rolling my eyes at least once per paragraph for the first 100 pages. Nothing made sense and everyone behaved like caricatures. At around page 220 a character said something that changed everything, "shut up, don't take this seriously, stop being cynical and enjoy the ride". No joke, it's not exactly what the character says but it is close. I realized that I was taking this too seriously, and for the first time in a while, I turned off my brain. And I had a pretty decent experience for the most part. Don't stress the impossible physics, the nonsensical world, the wacky exposition dumps, and the campy early 2000's villains and heroes, and just enjoy the superhero menagerie.
This whole book feels like a classic bait-and-switch.
I really enjoyed the last book and how it ended. Not more than two chapters into this one and I was filled with disappointment. As I kept reading, it just got worse. The new hero characters are lacking, not just as hero's but as individuals. Fox is a major let down. And Brick is just stumbling along. At no point was I invested, at no point did I care about the plot.
This is a very good Super Hero (SH) book and as I've said before it's hard to find a good SH book. I just tried three SH books before I read this one. It's A good thing that I'm a member of Prime or hunting for the good books could get expensive. But if you're reading the reviews trying to find a good SH book well look no further you have found a very good SH book. I can not wait for the third book in the series.
The characters are interesting and they have some good growth. I’m enjoying the world being built. A good bit of expansion into the rest of the world came about in this one. It was fun watching the MC learn and grow more adept. I can’t wait to start on the next one.
The story was totally different this time around. It had another feel to it. It was a fun read. I felt like it was more world building mixed with excitement. I enjoyed reading it.
