With two major investigations now closed, fish and wildlife police officer Luke McCain is called upon for his most high-profile case yet.
En route to the Washington State Fair, an exotic cat show’s trailer is stolen. After some of the big cats are released into the Cascade Mountains, McCain and his dog Jack try to locate the show’s most menacing member: a Bengal tiger. Meanwhile, there are rumblings that a wild cougar has killed a dirt biker in the region.
While news crews flock to McCain’s neck of the woods, he must stay on the trail of both big cats before anyone else falls prey to the predators.
As with other books from this author, who happens to also be my brother, I like to give full disclosure at the outset of my reviews of his books.
In this, the third installment in the McCain series, the author puts our main character in a very interesting setting involving animal rights activists and exotic animals. As the story reveals itself, Luke McCain is suddenly faced with wild animals that are not native within his Department of Fish and Wildlife territory.
With each of my brother's books, I go in to them with no advance insight of plot, characters, setting, etc. This gives me a true read of the work, and makes the books more enjoyable from a reader perspective.
If you have not ventured in to the Luke McCain series yet, it's not necessary to read the books in order. While the first book (Cascade Killer) does provide some character backgrounds, each book can be read independently. I have it on good information that we can look forward to book four reaching your favorite bookseller some time in 2022.
Another interesting and suspenseful novel by new author Rob Phillips. Living in eastern Washington makes it all the more interesting, knowing the terrain and locations mentioned by Fish and Wildlife policeman Luke McCain as he journeys back and forth, enforcing laws and solving the crimes.
Another 3.5 rounded up. This is just a fun series without thinking involved. This one really didn’t require thinking because it wasn’t a whodunnit. All of the characters and their roles are laid out in the first couple chapters. But the search for the tiger with the side stories was a fun ride!
Like so many other authors, Rob starts going in the wrong direction
Why do so many authors think sex a must? Nothing graphic but the to often ending a chapter telling us the characters are going to have sex. The same with the so sexy looking female just about every male jaws drops, talk about hot and sexy she is, please give me a break.
Besides the I gotta at least hint sex in my story, some pretty far fetched stuff in this one. Mostly the Dobbs character and what seems must of been months for him to hatch out his plan, that if he had such a high IQ he would know even a dumb cop could figure out it wasn’t a cougar that killed the person.
Basically this one had a lot of stupid and dumb characters.
Come on Rob, stay on the path of the first book. Sexual innuendos, dumb characters, and far fetched plots don’t make me anxious to read the next book. They make me sigh and say to my self a promising start and already the third book and I’m look for another series
My second five star book review ever! I am truly enjoying this series, if giving my first five star review ever to book two and my second ever to book three was any indication. I truly enjoyed this plot more than book two’s plot and loved seeing the secondary characters still.
I think I said in my book two review that I’m in the minority of readers when looking for a female lead, I want an average everyday female that happens to be smart and has common sense. I’ve hit walls with female cops and FBI agents to where they are all the same. Female has a missing/murdered love one, a horrible back story, has no common sense, and has a chip on her shoulder, however this is nothing like that!!
This series has led me to believe I need books that have a male lead with the female lead as secondary because I love Sinclair! I also normally finish book three in a long series and move on to the next series because by book three I am normally exhausted by the characters. There have been no TSTL moments in any of these books, except a minor one in book one but not bad. Also love Kingbury’s shirts! It’s refreshing to see an author start a bit in book one and continue it throughout. It just shows how into these characters this author is. I am excited for book four!!
I expected a little more subtlety in the portrayal of the animal liberators who set free the big cats. Since there were two, it would have been easy enough to portray one of them as ethically less than a wacko. The one who has doubts has these mainly about whether they will get caught - not whether this is in the best interest of these captive creatures.
By contrast, McCain's reaction when an innocent cougar is mistakenly tracked and killed is fairly modest. Not much outrage from the one character I expected to have a conscience about this. Well, I guess that's in keeping with his overall low-key demeanor in these stories.
Disappointed that the female villain is repeatedly described in overly sexual terms. Really?? This contributes nothing to the plot.
It was refreshing to have a different focus on this third book in the series, but I think it's time for me to move to a different author for awhile.
I'm concerned. Years ago, I started reading a series where the character was nice and liked dogs. The first couple of books were ok, but then everything was always international espionage or something else overblown, and I gave up on it. This one is risking the same.
The first book was ok, the second a little troublesome, but this one has a Bengal tiger and a Unibomber wannabe, and it's too much. The author needs to spend a bit more time in more local stories rather than trying for sensationalism. Still, I'll try another.
I almost gave this a 2 but decided to try the 4th book. I once talked to author Jack DuBrul and he said he didn't like to write about areas he knew well because he would find himself describing the area too well. This author falls into that trap which slows the pace too much. This novel not only does that but adds other unnecessary detail.
I read all three of these before I did the review. I really liked all of them. Very good descriptions in the story. The characters were well thought out and stayed consistent.
I have read the 3 series of these books. Some of it was funny but yet had suspense and thriller in all 3.would recommend this books to PPL who like books like this. Plz keep up the good work ty.
I loved each book in this series and hope the author continues it & writes quickly! The characters are people you would want to be friends with. The books are fast paced and exciting. Really hard to put down!
In this book Lucas has several problems to deal with. A crazy person wanting to stop the noise of off road vehicles. Someone's stolen a trailer full of exotic cats. I'm so glad I found this series of books they are so enjoyable. This one is one of the best.
I love a good book where the hero shares limelight with an animal. Catching another bad guy with wit, common sense and skill. Doesn't get any better and it actually had an ending.
I am beginning to think Author Phillips has an amazing imagination. Another fast paced adventure story, keeping you interested page after page. I am afraid I will run out of books, keep on writing.
Rob Phillips has done it again. I enjoy his writing and all the characters in the Luke McCain mystery book series. They are interesting and well thought, and there are no offensive words.
Good solid story lines with a good local knowledge. Just enough parallel story lines to be interesting but not confusing. This will be a series my outdoorsy husband will love.
The story pulled me along at a fast clip and was hard to put down. Being from Yakima it was easy to follow the area descriptions and the hunting details were great. All the prior stories were just as good.
Rob Phillips is a great story teller. He quickly draws his readers in with his descriptions of people and events. I love that his writing is free from very hard language which is so prevalent today. I will keep reading Rob’s books!
I love this series! Great characters, great setting, always a good crime mystery. Only downside is there aren’t more books in the series. Highly recommend!
The story begins with an animal rights activist releasing a tiger in the Cascades. Luke and Jack are on the case. It's well written with enough action to be interesting.
Although I have been really enjoying this series, the Cascade Predator story was a bit of a stretch at certain points during this story. However, the ending helped redeem this book.
