Magic Genie #1

Murder & Magic

Rate this book
A genie.
Her master.
And MURDER.

Who loves I Dream Of Jeannie as much as I did? Well, she’s ba-ack! Not her exactly, of course, but my new and improved version of her, and Major Nelson is back too. Although, this time the genie’s master is not a major, or an astronaut...he’s more of a numbers guy, who has always secretly dreamed of becoming a PI.

On the morning of his wedding, he finds himself at the beach wanting to end it all, rather than go through with his marriage to his overbearing fiancée—when he’s hit over the head with a falling object. (Which just happens to be the genie, recently estranged from her master under peculiar circumstances, falling out of the sky.) Stumbling back to shore, ready to face his problems head on, he inadvertently acquires another one—kicking a bottle out of the surf, dislodging its cork and releasing its genie.

Now he has two women he doesn’t want. And an ex-master on his heels.

Did I mention, together, on the run, the genie and her master accidentally stumble across a murder?

Together, our unlikely pair must solve the mystery of the whodunit, before they end up the killer’s next victim. Or before the Zolton supreme ruler of all genies gets wind of the genie’s illegal master swap, and smites them both down in their tracks.

Will genie and her new master sleuth their way out of trouble…and avoiding falling in love?

Hayley falls from the sky but not attached to a parachute, no she has fallen out of her Master's pocket in her bottle, yup you heard me right in her jewel encrusted bottle!
Her Master is Arnold Anthony Grisbalm the third the smelly, alcohol drinking danger sport loving spoiled brat who lives off daddy's fortune, has gone sky diving except his parachute has not opened and Hayley stuck in her bottle has fallen from his pocket.
Hayley is only out of the bottle to impress his friends or when Arnold is looking for something a little more um unsatisfying (well for Hayley anyway) Not the charmed Master her mother had hoped for before being cast away forever for breaking the one big rule in the genie handbook, (trust me no one has red-tape and by laws like the genie's!)
Now having landed on a beach Hayley must hope that a new master will find her bottle and open it so she can start a new chapter of her life, and what a chapter it will be!

This is a lovely story there are some giggles and some tense on the edge of your seat moment! The characters are fun, hayley can be a ditz, her friend Aggie is loyal and true and then there is her new Master Dick. So much drama however this story will keep you hanging till the very end, it is a good read and I would recommend you read it, I was excited to read that there will be a follow up.

This is a unique genie paranormal cozy mystery.

It is cute and funny AND a little bit SASSY, and has a very sweet love story, as well as MURDER! Of course. But the emphasis is on the genie romance. A tale of impossible genie love oops I mean forbidden word! Genies aren’t allowed to fall in love!

I sooo loved it! I'm immediately drawn in. What a fun story, and I loved the light-hearted tone! My first thought was: this is going to be fun, for sure! And it was! So exciting, and So. Much. Fun! I thoroughly enjoyed it! Good flow, good pace. Very, very entertaining! The mystery, the case itself, starts late in the book, but I didn’t mind at all. But don’t expect a conventional ‘whodunit’ murder mystery. I believe as the series will progress, that will be the case more, but for now it’s mostly a genie romantic comedy with a touch of murder and suspense and I loved it! It's like nothing I've ever read before. In a good way! The mystery, once it started, did have some twists ans turns I didn’t expect!

Hayley is so much fun! And I loved Hayley and Dick together, love their banter, love their chemistry.

It was such a fun book! What a crazy ride! Crazy in a good way :D

This book is very imaginative and the world building is excellent. It is primarily a romance with a little mystery/suspense thrown in. I feel sorry for Hayley. Who knew there were so many rules for genies? Not only is she bound to her master and has to do what he said but she is bound by these stringent rules and has to watch out for breaking any of them. It's not exactly a HEA, more of a "happy for now" story.

What a fun read! I loved I Dream of Jeannie way back when it was on tv along with Bewitched. Maybe that’s where I developed a love for witches (and Genies).

Ruby has bewitched her readers with this funny romp as our Genie believes her master has died from a sky diving accident and falls for a good looking guy who just happens to release her from her bottle after it washes up on the shore. She falls in (forbidden word (love) with him but Genie’s aren’t suppose to fall in love with anyone especially their masters so she tries to set him up with other girls but he only wants her. Add to this they are witnesses to four people being murdered and the hit man is right on their heels!

This is the perfect lighthearted escape from the doom and gloom from the media as well as the challenges we all face! I enthusiastically recommend this book to get you out of the funk you may find yourself in. It’s nice that our Genie has her best friend looking down on her from Genie control to help her out though some of her advice just makes matters worse!

You’ll be smiling and chuckling if not laughing out loud at some of the situations these two find themselves in. This book will give you a much needed shot in the arm ( and not the other kind that’s
being hyped at now) for you can’t help but be in a better frame of mind after reading it! So do yourself a big favor that you’ll be thankful you did and pick up and read this book today!

When most paranormal cozies are about witches, werewolves, and the normal stuff, Murder & Magic features a genie! A genie in a sparkly, gem-encrusted BOTTLE!

Thanks to a skydiving accident they were both in, our genie believes that her Master has died leaving her the task of finding a new Master. Luckily, her fall from the sky landed her right on target to a new Master. Who isn't even sure he WANTS a genie!

While the book is very reminiscent of a tv sitcom from several decades ago, it IS a quirky, fresh spin on the paranormal cozy. Book One is light on the Murder and Mystery but delivers a fun read and the promise - our new Master has decided on a career change, and being a PI is his dream - of many more intriguing mysteries to come. Plus, there's always the question of whether they can hide their burgeoning romance - a huge Genie Law Book taboo - from the Great All-Knowing Zolton!

I enjoyed this first book of the series, and am looking forward to their new escapades; I think you will too!

[NB, my review is for the book's new title and author's pen name change:"Murder and Mischief" by Ruby Rivers. Same story, changed title]

“Have you ever just felt like you needed to do something so badly, you’d risk anything to get it done?"

What's a genie to do when she falls out of her master's pocket... in her bottle! Does she need a new master? Rules say so, so she finds a runaway groom on the same beach because she can't get out of her bottle on her own, and gets involved in the new man's life, after telling him the rules, and finding out he really doesn't want to be her boss. Will that change? And how? The results rival Lucy and Ricky... or even Jeannie and Tony of comedic fame, with a 21st century twist

I really love Haley and Aggie and their attitudes and willingness to get it done even if they have to do an end run around the rules. The sweetest character is Aggie's friend Foster (do I see a spin-off?)
Recommended 4/5

This genie finds herself on the beach stuck inside her bottle. Her first master, Arnold Anthony Grisbalm III, a rich whirlwind living off of Daddy's money, was skydiving with the genie's bottle in his pocket. When the genie thought her first master was dead she searched for a new one. She found a new master soaking wet in part of his wedding clothes. She gives herself the name of Hayley Jones. Dick Halfdick is not sure he wants a genie. He is wanting to get out of a marriage for many reasons.
There is a little murder mystery, lots of humor and romance. I loved the interaction between Hayley and Aggie who is watching out for Hayley and trying to keep her from the Grand Zolton. Genies are not allowed to say or feel the "L" word. Aggie's friend, Foster, seems to be watching out for her.
This book has great characters, is well written and has lots of twists and turns,
I received an advance copy of this book. This is my honest review.

This book is great for those who loved the series I Dream of Jeannie. It is a great book because the characters as so wonderful and full of life. Ruby is a terrific author and I can't wait till the next book comes out. I am an ARC member and am giving this an honest review. My favorite characters are of course Hayley and Dick. They are a great item. I gave this 5 stars because that is what I think the book deserves in my opinion. The book is about a genie in a bottle who happens to fall on top of a man who was drowning himself to get out of his wedding, and that knocked some sense into him. From there you can imagine the trouble they get into. If you want to find out what happens I highly recommend you get the book, it is hilarious. You will like the book. Thank you

Hayley and Dick have a big adventure. Hayley is a genie and when her master jumps out of plane and the parachute doesn't open, she is left adrift. Literally. When Dick finds her, he is not ready for a genie, but he is ready to end his engagement a few minutes before the wedding. The bride to be is a bit psycho and is causing Hayley and Dick a lot of problems. When people end up dead because of them, they try to find a place where they can live without his ex-fiancee finding them. Genies are not supposed to fall in love with their masters, but Hayley just can't help it. So, while running from the ex-fiancee, they also have to contend with all the rules she is breaking and hoping she doesn't get punished. Will they make it?

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting when I got this book, but whatever I was expecting, Bottled Up delivered. It was a fun book, didn't take itself too seriously, with a lot of light humor sprinkled throughout the book. (My favorite was the Genie bureaucracy and the thousands and thousands of rules and regulations genies have to follow.) I wasn't 100% surprised at the mystery's solution (such as it was), but it was still fun to see how it played it. I enjoyed this book more than I thought it would, and I'm really tempted to check out the next one.

Murder, Magic, Suspense and Romance
Welcome to the world of being a genie. It’s a great life right? Maybe not. Who knew there were so many genie laws? And when one is broken, life gets complicated. So what could go wrong as this genie, (name to be determined by the master), tries to navigate the death of her first master and convince the next one to keep her? Just about everything you can imagine, that’s what. This book has laugh out loud humor. At the same time you will find yourself caught up in the characters’ lives and biting your nails with suspense!

I loved this book and found it to be very entertaining. The characters are interesting and well depicted as well as somewhat quirky. The story engaged my interest from the start and kept me laughing at the antics of Hayley and Dick as they try to solve a murder and avoid Zolton at the same time.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I can't wait for the next one!

I wasn't sure if I'd like this... But I love the author's other work so I figured I'd give it a try. Am I glad I did!! Fun filled world building with delightful characters and practically non stop action! Lots of adventure, and a glimpse of what day to day life for a genie entails!! Laugh out loud funny doesn't hurt either!!

Even if you don't think its for you, give this very different paranormal cozy a try!!

This is not your typical paranormal mystery. This story is about Hayley who is a genie and has a bottle and everything! Hayley ends up with a new master and fights a strong attraction to him. One of the funniest parts of the story is all of the rules and regulations that the genies must follow. Hayley's adventures and her straddling of both the genie and real worlds make for some amusing scenes. I can't wait to read the next installment!

This story was not what I expected. It was better....from the first chapter on.

There is quite a bit of humour in this book that kept me giggling.

There are interesting character names, a few accidents that occur with surprising results and major plot twists. I also liked that I was able to see the perspective of two of the characters besides the main one.

I really enjoyed this book.

Great characters and plot. Love the premise of what a genie has to endure in her life of servitude. Being stuck with the wrong person can be demeaning and dangerous. However, this story tells the tale of a genie who found a new life and lots of adventure. You will love how the story draws you in and keeps your attention. Try this book and you will enjoy a delightful reading experience.

Wow! This book is totally different from anything I have read. It is just so good!! It has a genie-who wouldn't love one of those- a love interest, a murder, a mystery, and so much more!! I just couldn't put this book down. I can not wait to read more in the series and see where it takes us!

Wonderful book. "Hayley" is a fairly new Geanie when she finds herself without a master until Dick picks her up and is confused on whether to keep her or not, given the consequences if he doesn't. Join the two of them on this adventure as they navigate new waters together.

This is the start of an interesting series. Genie is lost skydiving and believes her old master is dead. She is found by her new master when she falls on him. And the story goes from there. Lots of fun and a little mystery. I loved it.

Cute read. I had a hard time staying interested. For two people who want to open a PI business, they lack observation skills.
