It’s been three years since the zombie outbreak almost destroyed the world. Humanity fought back and the Zombie Response Team was created, an organization that has numerous divisions throughout the United States that are dispatched to destroy the dwindling undead population.
Elisabeth Mayfair heads up Team Mayfair. As the Team Leader, she works hard at dispensing and eliminating zombies, and her desire to protect her sister Margo and all she holds dear is her driving force.
But Elisabeth has a secret. She’s an Abnormal who gained special abilities after being bit by a zombie. Using her newly acquired skills gives Elisabeth an advantage against the undead. But Abnormals aren’t fully understood, and she must keep her condition a secret or risk her own life.
When Elisabeth discovers a zombie uprising in the small town of Pine Valley, Tennessee, she and her team are tested to their limits as they face hordes that appear out of nowhere. As they search for the cause of the new outbreak, they will uncover a plot that threatens not only the fragile stability of Pine Valley, but the world itself.
Zombieverse is my absolute favorite genre. I love zombies in all forms of media, so when I saw this book in the new section at my local library, I had to grab it. It's got the word zombie in the title.
Turns out this book is not for me, regardless of genre.
The worldbuilding is minimal and it seems like there's supposed to be a lot of character building but there isn't. What there is a lot of is other characters telling us what certain characters are supposed to be like, but it's very tell, don't show.
The book itself opens with the POV of a character who is murdered two pages later, to no repercussions and it adds no value to the book. The entire opening scene can be cut and the book would lose nothing for it.
90 pages into a 202 page book is when anything that could be called a plot starts to form. There was an attempt to hint at it, and an "mysterious" POV inserted of something (referred to as it in these sections) working toward something we don't know, but it's supposed to revolve around the main character, Elizabeth Mayfair.
The plot might have been intriguing, but it didn't have enough substance to keep me reading it and I did not finish.
This book is for someone, but that person is not me.
It has only taken three years to get the zombie outbreak under control. There's no coming back from being a zombie, but there are Abnormals, people who get bitten by a zombie but don't turn Zeke. These people have multiple strengths and can ferret out other zombies in an area.
Elizabeth Mayfair is the team leader of Team Mayfair, they get called in to dispose of any zombies that are discovered in the area of Tennessee where Elizabeth lives with her mom and twin sister. Elizabeth's Team and family know that she's abnormal, but otherwise, she keeps it a secret.
Highly recommend it, if you like entertaining zombie novels.
Many thanks to #netgalley for the complimentary copy of #zrtdivisiontennessee I was under no obligation to post a review.
Not my cup of tea. I think it others will enjoy it more, but this book was not what I expected. After reading the blurb I thought this would be right up my alley, yet I had trouble finishing it. The writing is okay, but I expected a fast-paced, action packed book with a crisp writing style and instead I got longwinded descriptions, seemingly weird unnatural dialogue and the point of view changed a lot and very unsuspectingly. I was often a couple of paragraphs in before figuring out who's part I was reading now.
I do think other readers will enjoy this a lot more, the plot has promise but unfortunately for me this was not a good fit.
