Dip into your new obsession in this steamy gay ballroom romance! The beautifully-detailed, lithe bodies of the two "kings of the ballroom" fly across the dance floor as rivals build a volatile bond in this red-hot romance!
IT TAKES TWO
Shinya Sugiki, the dashing lord of Standard Ballroom, and Shinya Suzuki, passionate king of Latin Dance: The two share more than just a first name and a love of the sport. They each want to become champion of the 10-Dance Competition, which means they'll need to learn the other's specialty dances, and who better to learn from than the best? But old rivalries die hard, and things get complicated even further when they realize there might be more between them than an uneasy partnership...
Sometimes you put off reading the next volume in a series because you just don't get around to it, and time gets away from you...and sometimes you put it off because you kind of know you're going to hate it.
So here I am, finally rereading this series and continuing to the dreaded Volume 7, mostly because the 10 DANCE movie came out and was fantastic, sparking with chemistry and deep emotions and reminding me of all the things I'd loved so, so much about this series when it began.
And then I cracked open this volume and rapidly remembered the things I'd started to really, really dislike about it.
A part of me kind of hopes that it took 3 years for Volume 8 to be written because Inoue realized the readers hated the direction the series was going. But that's probably a pointless expectation.
It just, at this point, feels like a completely different series that shifted partway through Volume 5, and I'm not sure it's ever going to return to what I'd appreciated about it. The entire storyline and all the characters just went weirdly, suddenly unhinged.
Honestly, the main romance is so tainted by Max and Norman now that I genuinely don't know if I'd want the happy ending with the Shinyas anymore.
Norman, as Suzuki's new ballroom coach, is in love with his former dance partner: his sister. It's hard to tell if anything had ever actually happened between them, but with the way this series is going, I wouldn't be surprised. She's steadily rejecting him now, though, pointedly sending him photos of herself in her wedding dress and having him walk her down the aisle. Norman gets wildly drunk after the wedding because he's so sad about it and tells Suzuki, who's been staying at his house despite having a hugely expensive apartment that Max pays for, that he "just wants somewhere to escape."
Suzuki, still bitterly in love with Sugiki, despite having rejected him, says he wants an escape, too, so he starts sleeping with Norman.
I hate it. I hate it so much.
It's completely absurd, too, because they leap into it within seconds of considering it, even though Suzuki had spent 6 volumes swearing up and down that he wasn't interested in guys and would never sleep with a guy. And now he's just having sex with his coach all the time.
Including, weirdly, in some semi-public setting where Norman summons one of Suzuki's students, Shun, to walk in on them, so Shun can get his heart broken and give up on Suzuki.
Shun appeared in like...one panel in Volume 6, and I'd honestly thought he was a girl because his character design is a whole lot like Fusako's. Then for some reason he's coming to parties at Owen's house, like it's remotely appropriate for a dance school student to be attending personal events like that, and Suzuki's new Max-hired personal assistant is taking on a weird parenting role with Shun and punching Suzuki in the face for rejecting him...
Literally, what is going on with this story. Why, to any of it?
You can write a mutually pining breakup and heartbroken rivals without all this incredibly weird, kind of disturbing stuff cluttering the plot.
The author's notes say ridiculous things like "ignoring the relationship between Norman and Suzuki would weaken the whole story," which is wildly untrue. It's what's ruining the story, along with whatever horrific things Max is making Sugiki do for money. Like, what did he have to do when Max "lost him" in a card game?
Plus Inoue apparently had a whole lot more of Norman/Suzuki and trimmed some of it down, which...doesn't make me feel any better about it.
Then we get to the dance competition where Suzuki and Sugiki finally see each other again, which ends with an embrace that is so incredibly not earned, and extremely out of place with everything else that's been happening. Plus I couldn't understand what was going on with the competition itself. The two of them placed first in their respective categories, but was the audience throwing a fit (completely with weird Nazi imagery???) because Sugiki had fallen apart and didn't actually deserve it...? Or was something else happening? It was...so unclear.
I'm kind of glad I did wait years to read this volume, because I might not have even watched the movie if I'd had this horrible storyline in my brain leading up to it.
I do still have Volume 8 preordered, and I would like to know how it turns out, but it's really difficult for me to see how I could swing back to loving this series again. I hate all of Inoue's choices and, apparently, their whole concept of what this story is supposed to be. Just because it's about older people doesn't mean all those people have to be horrible. Nothing about this situation is "beyond-their-control"...they created this mess for themselves.
Last volume meandered and introduced 2 characters I was not very interested in. Max because he was the worst representation of queer men: a predator with disgusting tastes that uses money to essentially buy people. And Norman becomes more of a character and this series is now one the many manga series where there’s some random weirdo obsessed with their sibling.
Perhaps we’re meant to think Suzuki’s regret at not sleeping with Sugiki led him to be more open to sleeping with men after their breakup? Regardless, I found his willingness to sleep with Norman weird. They pretty much “bond” over being unable to be with the person they want to be with and it’s weird a guy with 9 sisters is even remotely attracted to someone that seems to want to bang his own sister. In conclusion, Norman’s a weirdo and parents that push their kids to dance romantic stories with each other are also big weirdos.
This volume takes place after the break up between Suzuki and Sugiki. Even though they think about each other a lot throughout the volume, the connection that drew me to the series isn’t really here. Without that, what’s left is a lot of technical stuff about the structure of the competition and dancing technique and I just don’t care all that much.
I’m not sure if it’s worth continuing this series which is a bummer because there’s still not ton of BL series with over 5 or 6 volumes.

I arrived at home today and I saw the package on my porch and I felt like Christmas in the middle of September! I love my past self for pre-ordering it.
So this volume definitely had some ups and some downs, I feel like I got to know our main leads way better with this volume and I cannot wait for volume eight. I absolutely love this series; I love the dancing references, I love the portrayal of them getting to know each other and getting to know themselves too as they grow to be the dancers they hope to be. Anyways I can't read enough about this series I absolutely adore it and I just have to wait until 2024 for the release of volume eight. I think I'll go back and actually write a review for each of the volumes, since I've been buying them as they get published from the publisher directly so maybe I can work on that this month. Anyways toodles!
my favorite manga series by far. yuri on ice was the first anime that i watched and is still my favorite so 10 dance is like a more sophisticated version of yoi in my eyes. the only bad thing is the agony of waiting actually YEARS in between some volumes for 10 dance, and the direction it went in when they split up, but with how this volume ended im hoping the romance gets reignited and that the next volume comes out sooner than later bc i cannot stand these emotional cliffhangers. overall though i highly recommend this series <3

CW: There are a few panels in this that are nearly explicit.
There are a few characters in this and the last volume who I don't like. They feel like vehicles to make the story more dynamic, but they're both uncomfortable and annoying in different ways.
Once again there are some beautifully drawn panels of dancing, and the facial expressions of the characters communicate their feelings excellently. I love the last spread in this volume and I'm excited for volume 8.
Another volume that could’ve been trimmed a lot more and incorporated into another. The main thing for me tho, is this whole time I thought Suzuki was resisting a physical relationship with Sugiki because of internalized homophobia. But apparently not, cause he has no problem sleeping with Norman. (Also who on earth is Shun? I have zero recollection of this character.) So now I have no idea why he was resisting. Nothing he says about that makes sense in the context of everything else going on in the comic. Plus there was more of the incest and pimping plot lines. And a random Hitler cameo 😵💫?!?! Honestly the whole volume was so random and so disjointed.
According to google (I was checking before I started the first volume; I’m not that eager to know now), the Japanese vol 8 has been released but not translated yet. I don’t think I’ll be picking it up. I’m finding this story exhausting and not engaging and way lower than my expectations at the start. We’ll see I guess, but most likely I won’t be picking up the next.

Well, the whole volume the Shinya's are pretty much separated from each other. Both of them are sad and longing, so there is a way for them to come back to each other maybe, but I didn't like this volume. There is too much time apart.
There is another championship that both of them go to. All the dancers have their eyes on the Shinya's. They are on fire. Both of the dancers are missing the other. The dancing is beginning to suffer without the other.
Suzuki let himself have a drunken encounter with a man. He seems to be searching still. There's a note at the end with Satohinoue saying they are going to be together soon. IT's about time.
I totally forgot about this series. I think I was getting bored of it. I recently decided to pick it back up, but I don't remember enough of what had happened before. However, it didn't really impede my understanding. This volume felt like a filler to me. Things are moving too slowly for me, and there seem to be too many side characters who don't matter, but I like the dancing aspect. Plus, the chemistry is still strong even if they only meet that one moment at the end. The build-up was well depicted. 3/5
PS: Of the the comparison which could've been made... Nazi Germany, Hilter... Why?
If it weren’t for the 7th volume already being out and the movie release, I would have dropped this series. It’s not really my cup of tea, but I gave it a try. Luckily, it’s a quick read, although it left me confused again and with little interest in following a story that burns slowly and now seems to be heading in a completely opposite direction.
I was looking forward to this book, hoping that these fools would finally come to their senses. Then I got like 80 pages in and the plot line got introduced and had to bow out.
I'm kind of irritated at the shift in focus to new characters that I don't care as much about. I'm already not a fan of slow burn and I'm not sure where this is all going. Maybe the series just isn't my cup of tea anymore, but I'm too invested in knowing how it will end to stop reading now.
Excuse me why did it just leave us with that cliffhanger?! Now I won’t know how it’s resolved until the next volume releases in March! Sadness. I also disliked some of the choices made in this volume.
Argh, I don’t like how they are not together for most of this book 😢 but I know this is soon coming to an end and the reunion will be beautiful 🥹 (hello, Japanese chapters!)
I had to actually run to my bookshelf to see if I had the next volume. I was just so sure this was the last one but with this ending it sure isn't! I've been waiting to read the total of this series a while but now I need to wait even more for the rest of it? Gahhhhhhhhhhhhh @.@;;;;;;
