Alexa Ispas holds a PhD in psychology from the University of Edinburgh. The books in her Psychology for Actors Series provide actors with proven psychology techniques to thrive and build a successful career.
Very helpful and inspiring ways to allow actors better skills when memorizing lines. I appreciated how short and compact this read was and yet how much science backed information was shared to coincide with memorization exercises.
It’s really quite easy to incorporate these techniques into a concrete way towards memorization. The simple step by step way each lesson is explained and the many uses for each step allow the subconscious to do it’s night work. Thank you for the very valid way psychology can be used for a variety of tools all over the spectrum of human development! I Will be looking at the complete collection of your series and incorporating this for memorization all across the board!
This was a good overview of a lot of principles I already knew. I would have liked a more bullet-pointed organization of the material as well as more documentation, which I would have expected from a PhD but didn’t get with this. Additionally, a summary of the material that could be turned into a handout for acting students or drama club members would have been advantageous as well.
I believe the term is fluff. That's what this book is. It's a quick read and contains nothing of value whether you're an actor, entrepreneur, pilot or politician. You would most likely learn more about memorization from a high school or college student than Alexa Ispas. His name I will soon forget. Too bad I can't get my money back.
It doesn't say anything really new, but I found it very helpful, considering it takes those methods we kind of already knew about, and then organizes them, giving the reader a whole process to memorize their lines. I give it 4 stars.
"Memorization for Actors" by Alexa Ispas offers a practical and encouraging guide for performers looking to conquer the often-daunting task of learning lines. Ispas breaks down the process into manageable techniques, emphasizing understanding and active engagement with the text rather than rote repetition. The book provides a variety of exercises and strategies tailored to different learning styles, addressing common challenges actors face. While concise, it delivers valuable insights and actionable advice that can empower actors to approach memorization with more confidence and effectiveness. It's a worthwhile read for both seasoned professionals and those just starting out.
I approve. The author doesn’t hold that a trick supplants real work. The author does hold that a framework added to real work holds long-lasting results, and the more that you implement the framework, the easier it will be to use in the future.
Good advice here for the task. I would have liked more examples relating to scripts etc and to drama theory. The kindle version also has one sentence paragraphs which makes it difficult to read.
I am glad to know I was intuitively doing some of the things this book suggested. After reading it and trying to do lines I feel way more confident and positive about my memorization skills. So it started working immediately.
This book provided straightforward, practical guidance while encouraging those of us that have succumbed to the myth that we can’t memorize well. We can and will! Thank you for this book!
It is a very good, simple, relevant, and very practical book for memorization not just for actors. I think it is very useful for memorization in general.
This book really is amazing! Can’t believe how good it is as an actor who has difficulty memorising! This book is my saving grace! On my way to read the rest of the series
Much of the information is familiar if you have read other books on memory and memorization. She does make a few connections that I had not considered, and well worth adding your arsenal should you be in the performing arts.
I'm often skeptical of memory books, but this one had practical tips and strategies that I applied and which helped me memorize my lines -- something I have struggled with in the past!
