I really liked the audiobook #4 in the series and bought a book bundle with all the books prior to it. This is the last book in the bundle. I just don't like the authors writing style nor Mary Sarah as the reader. I found the plot incredibly boring for a redemption story of a character who really and I mean really was a wastrel and cad in previous books. In this book he has had a character transplant and is the sole of discretion with Sarah who falls in love after 4 days of rather ho hum activities. The plot was weak and the characters even more so. PLUS, the villain was meh and didn't add much to the plot. I rate it 1.5* and round up.

I liked this one less than the other books I've read in this series, unfortunately. It had its enjoyable moments, but there were a few things that just didn't rise to the same level as the other installments.
1. Colin is way too far in the red at the beginning of this book to be easily redeemed. I don't think he made it by the end. I thought it was glossed over by calling him a "scoundrel" in the most affectionate terms. Scoundrel doesn't even come close. I'm willing to believe in his redemption eventually, but he needs to do a lot more than he's done.
2. The "insta-love" in this was not believable. In the others I've read (1,2 & 4), it wasn't an issue because the couple was married early on so they were forced to deal with each other. In this one, they were not married and only spent a few days together (much of it sleeping and unconscious) before they were separated. When they go their separate ways they're still strangers but obsessed with each other. It was a disappointingly inorganic connection.
3. While I like that the heroines in this series are not always "diamonds of the first water", it's just odd when the hero comments on it, especially to the heroine. I'm glad the heroine's looks aren't the main draw, but to keep reminding us gets annoying. Included in this complaint is the constant reminder that Jane (from the previous book) is plain, plump and doesn't seem to match the gorgeous duke she's married to. Presumably, these plain or less-than-spectacular, heroines rise above their looks/station to be irresistible to their men. Then, as a reader, I'd like to rise above it too and not be reminded all the time.
4. The ending was launched with an inorganic contrivance. The thing I have liked about Braden so far is that the contrivances that move the plot have come about organically and aren't so glaring. This one was glaring. TSTL heroines are the bane of HR. Sad to see that used here.
5. The ending was rushed and the book introduced a character that I assume will come back, but the intro is really vague and not necessary for the plot.
No series is perfect. I still give this book three stars because it did have some enjoyable scenes. I just didn't think it was up to the quality of the others and I didn't feel that Colin was redeemed. On that note, one thing I did like is that Atherbourne still doesn't forgive him, even as he isn't trying to separate him from Victoria anymore. There's a realism to that and I appreciate it.
Going to take a break from devouring the series for now. Then I'll reread #4 to finish.
PS: it's been interesting having read #4 first. I think that actually worked well for me. It throws my series reading OCD off, but it was actually kind of fun. It'll be interesting to reread it and see characters referenced that I just let slide by before because I hadn't read their stories.

2.5 too easy of a redemption arc ⭐️
If you spent two books vilifying a man, Lord Colin, not little scoundrel things but driving a girl to commit suicide, among others things, his redemption better be more than self loathing and self pity and feeling undeserving!
This felt like an easy short cut. I knew his book would be coming but I had much bigger expectations to his redemption. It’s like it was an afterthought, like the author picked a random character from one of her books. I honestly thought Colin’s story was super carefully crafted, because there would be epic twists. This was so bland, boring and random.
And as cute as he was in this book, and he was a sweetheart, it felt a little fast and not super well executed.
It’s very insta love between them, they spend 2 days together and it’s all yearning, and the romance was very low burn.
This is my third book by this author and I declare:
she has issues with food. It’s either overweight, underweight, feeding etc. it’s super distracting because it’s not plot driven. The constant narrative about the fmc’s appearance, feels slightly insulting at this point. The MMC’s are all handsome of course.
Then there is the ending, it was a little rushed and I didn’t really feel invested in anyone at this point. I would have liked more focus on angst and drama instead of Syder, force feeding, and self doubt.
Should you read it? Maybe. I would not recommend it. Low romance, low steam, low drama. But a lot of characters.

2.5 Stars!
Hmmm, when I had first read this book I had given it a 4-star rating. After I re-read it, I dropped a star. And by the time I finished writing this review, I dropped another star and scrolled up to edit/ enter this line!
Plot Summary
Wherever Lord Colin Lacey goes, trouble inevitably follows. This time, it has landed him on the side of a road, middle of nowhere, beaten, tortured and left to die. Ms Sarah Battersby, a vicar's daughter and an instructor in deportment, is imminently facing dire financial straights and trying to run away from a horrible possibility of an engagement with a creepy man. When Sarah finds an injured man while travelling back home, she decides to save him, hoping that he is the answer to her prayers. A fake engagement ensues that turns all too real when the villain responsible for Colin's current predicament comes knocking.
My Thoughts
- As is unsurprising, Ms Braden demonstrates her superior writing skills. The story in itself is not that bad, the prose is great, the pacing is sound, there are tender moments, not much humour, but that is not an issue, considering the plotline.
- The plot is on the darker side of things, with the torture and intent to murder, the kidnapped girl, references to child abuse, along with the romance that is supposed to hold it all together.
- Again, the characters are unique, their development is there somewhere if you look closely enough. Predominantly, this story was about Colin's redemption, if I can call it that.

- The cameos of Blackmores & Atherbournes lent some depth to the story. Colin trying to try hard at being better was okay, I guess. I personally enjoyed Lucien's reaction to this entire debacle very much.
- The Lords working together was fun. It just needed more. This book needed more of everything.
The Problems
- My biggest problem with this book was Colin. He was so thoroughly vilified in the previous books, that he has changed, was tough to digest, and his reprehensible actions difficult to forget.
- Knowing what I know about Colin it was challenging to root for his HEA. If the vilification would have been less traumatic it would have been quite a fun read.
- Sarah plays no part in the story apart from saving him (okay, I grant that's a big one, of sorts) and getting kidnapped, she is basically leverage. Anyone could have saved him and any family member could have gotten kidnapped to propel Colin into action. It was a stretch, buying into the romance.
- The Villain, Syder was portrayed as such a shadowy character, very boogeyman-esq but his reveal was so anti-climatic, I was scoffing. More details of what was Colin digging into, his nature of association with the Home Office etc. would have made the book even better.
- There was no steamy goodness, it was steamy okayness, not what I had come to expect from Elisa Braden. Now I want to drop another star. Missy would be proud!
My Recommendation
It's okay. Had it been anyone else's story than Colin's I would have liked it more, the bias killed it. But don't let it dissuade you from reading the next one - The Devil Is a Marquess which is my opinion is the best one.

Excellent!
I loved this book and I am amazed that Ms. Braden could make me love Colin , considering how I felt about him at the end of the last book - I truly could not conceive how he could be redeemed. I guess that's why I read books and don't write them :)
Sarah is the impoverished daughter of a vicar and head mistress of a girls school - at least until her very ill father passes. On a trip back home from London, she happens upon a very badly beaten Colin. She brings him home and nurses him back to health. She then persuades him to pretend to be her betrothed to save her from a very persistent suitor.
Colin agrees to help Sarah - but knows he is in danger and therefore she will be as well if he doesn't leave as soon as possible.
Colin is a hunted man and a man haunted by his past mistakes - which to be honest, are HUGE and almost unforgivable. He is attracted to Sarah, but doesn't think he is, nor will he ever be worthy of her. Knowing her has made a profound difference in his life - he wants to be a better man and he knows that he can't be trusted around her. He leaves and knows that he will never forget her.
When Colin leaves - Sarah misses him but she never expected him to be interested in someone like her. Her father passes away and she and her mother are preparing to leave for Bath, when Colin's past shows up on her doorstep, she is desperate to warn him and convinces her mother to tell her where he is.
She shows up at the estate he is staying at and doesn't recognize the gorgeous stranger with Colin's voice at the door.
Colin is beyond shocked and elated to see Sarah - the way Ms. Braden described the scene was perfect - just perfect.
This time Colin persuades Sarah to come to London and pose as his betrothed - to protect her, of course.
This was the only part of the book that seemed standard HR fare - the deliberate misunderstanding of the others feelings and motivations. These two dance around their feelings - neither believing that the other feels the same way. They marry because Colin believes it is the only way to protect Sarah (of course that's why, why else would he insist that they marry?)
Things with the villain come to a head not long after they marry and even after threat has passed, these two don't see what is obvious to anyone who has eyes.
But the declaration was worth the wait - it was very sweet and very heartfelt.
The book is well written, flows along at a decent pace, has a really nasty villain, some very warm love scenes (I would have liked more - but Ms. Braden nailed it - any more and I would have doubted Colin's redemption) and a very sweet love story. Plus as a bonus we get to catch up with Victoria, Lucien, Harrison and Jane!
I am happy to recommend this book and cannot wait to see who is "ruined" next!

The first half was not what I had expected. I expected the fake betrothal and close proximity between the H/h to last much longer than a few days. The second half had a little more going for it. Characters from the first two books make several appearances to help the hero with his predicament. If you have not read the first book, you may want to read that book before this one to avoid spoilers.

Frankly, I am very surprised I enjoyed this book this much. One, I remember Colin from The Truth About Cads and Dukes and I found him juvenile, and two, the blurb was not very promising. I only picked it because I am aiming to finish this series.
The great swift pacing of the book and the cozy reading helped enormously to change my mind. Add to that solid, relatable characters and I was conquered. And yes, I liked Colin. Sure, he was a departure from what I saw of him before: more man than boy, more grounded than just a drunk rake. It took some suspension of disbelief that he could mend his ways over a few months, but I went with it. The romance between Colin and Sarah was bit of a whirlwind but it was believable and for once, the 'fake engagement' trope made sense given the circumstances in which Sarah was. The only down point was how the sub plot involving the villains ended in such a weak manner.
Still, this is a solid EB, a very comfortable read.
P.S. As usual, I loved the pearls of wisdom of the Dowager Marchioness of Wallingham 🤣 EB writes those with such verve and wit 😂

A underwhelming read.
The heroine was kind of dull/bland and does some foolish/stupid things.
I have not read the other 2 books with the hero in them so I do not really know what he is like in those but from what is discussed in this book he was a piece of work and in this book he does not really redeem himself and is simultaneously also written like a totally different person…. But he still has a kind of blasé/careless vibe to him.
And there is no real explanation to why he acted or is/was they he is/was.
The story and characters just feel washed out and lacking.
The chemistry and the romantic build up was rather lacking/rushed.
Over the top violence.
Nonsensical villain.
Sensitive issues are written/handled in a rather tactless and thoughtless way. (sexual assault/sexual abuse of a minor etc.)

Loved this one so much, to me this was nearly perfect, I honestly have no complaints. I have been waiting to get Colin's story and to see his redemption arc and it was so satisfying. Sarah was a WONDERFUL heroine with so much grit and determination but a lovely softness too. I ADORED this romance, it felt perfectly paced, great chemistry and tension, and a truly satisfying background plot and ending.
Also LOVED Sarah's mother's little chat with advice for Colin toward the end about love. That whole quote from her is what my biggest comaint was in book 2.

This was so bland, boring and random.
And as cute as he was in this book, and he was a sweetheart, it felt a little fast and not super well executed.
It’s very insta love between them, they spend 2 days together and it’s all yearning, and the romance was very low burn.
This is my third book by this author and I declare:
she has issues with food. It’s either overweight, underweight, feeding etc. it’s super distracting because it’s not plot driven. The constant narrative about the fmc’s appearance, feels slightly insulting at this point. The MMC’s are all handsome of course.
Then there is the ending, it was a little rushed and I didn’t really feel invested in anyone at this point. I would have liked more focus on angst and drama instead of Syder, force feeding, and self doubt.
Should you read it? Maybe. I would not recommend it. Low romance, low steam, low drama. But a lot of characters.

Has Elisa Braden discovered time travel? Because the way she writes about the Regency period is almost as if she has been there. She certainly makes the reader feel as if they are there……I love all the Rescued from Ruin series, in fact all Elisa Braden’s books, but this is my favourite so far. I never thought I would like Colin Lacey but the way Elisa has manipulated his character is pure genius. If you like well written Regency romance with real scoundrels losing their hearts, you should read this series.

Wow, this series gets better as it goes along. The first two books are excellent stories and blew my mind as does this book. If I could, I would definitely give this book more than 5*. I so enjoyed reading this. Loved the plot and all the same characters as before. I love Elisa Braden's writing style. I hope there will be more from this series.

I've been waiting a long time to read this book. It took awhile for the library to order it and then someone else got it before me (pretty sure it was someone who works at the library, but I digress).
This is the third book in Braden's Rescued from Ruin series and it is about Colin, who is definitely a scoundrel. If you haven't read the first two books in this series, I recommend reading them first. Colin is not a very likable character and I wasn't very fond of him going into this story. With what he did, he had a long way to go to redeem himself. While I think we could've seen more of a redemption for him, I did end up liking him in the story. If there is one good thing to say about Colin, it is that he deeply loves Sarah.
Sarah rescues Colin from death and makes it so he has to pretend to be her fiance to save her from a villain of a man in the village who wishes to marry her. Colin agrees but only stays for a couple of days as he is being hunted and wants to leave so as to not put Sarah and her mother in danger. I think this shows a bit of how he is changing.
Sarah begins to have real feelings for Colin. She doesn't want him to leave but knows that he has to go.
❈ Such a simple word, it was. Yes, he was leaving. Yes, this was likely the last she would ever see of him. He was a stranger. She'd only known him a few days. Why did it feel like someone was slowly breathing poison into her lungs?
The scene when he left her village was sad and sweet at the same time.
❈ "You saved my life, Miss Battersby." A gentle finger lifted her chin. A pair of warm lips brushed her cheek with the barest touch.
Her eyes closed tightly for a moment. She did not want to say goodbye to this man. She wanted to beg him to stay. Her heart drummed out its demand that she do precisely that. I cannot,she answered that foolish thing. He is leaving and I must let him go.
Circumstances arise where Sarah has to warn Colin he is in danger and the two meet again. It is then that Colin realizes he has to marry Sarah for real to protect her from the danger that continues to follow him. He wants Sarah to be protected if he were to die.
This was a fast moving story that kept my interest. I liked seeing how Colin changed and came to care for Sarah, even if he had no idea how to show her how he felt. There was quite a bit of excitement in the end of the story and gave me all the feels. It is one of my favorite tropes to read about.
If you've enjoyed the other books in this series, I think you'll like this one. I felt Colin redeemed himself with his love for Sarah, his actions and his sorrow to both his sister and Lucien.

My thoughts:
Overall, I didn’t love this one and it’s my least favorite of the series so far.
I knew Colin would be hard to redeem because each book we read in the series seems to bring him to new lows of humanity. You want to believe he really has learned from the past and is going to be a better man but this story just didn’t do his character redemption arc justice in my opinion. I wanted more from his story.
As this one opened, I was thinking it would really be my jam. It had some nursing back to health and proposed fake betrothal. But then it kind of went in a direction I wasn’t expecting and took me away from those themes I love. There was quite a bit of danger/intrigue in this one and I felt like I wanted their relationship to be more of the focus. I felt like we got more relationship focus in the prior ones and in this one I needed even more to get to know and forgive Colin.
I also really disliked that we got time in other character’s heads. I felt like if anyone needed all the page time for redemption, it’s Colin so I didn’t want to be taken from that. I never really understood after the separation why Colin ‘needed’ another fake betrothal from Sarah.

Elisa Braden is a master-storyteller. I loved this story. This was a slow-burn...then hit me HEAVY like a ton of bricks.
Our unlikely hero Colin- former scoundrel, rake, wastrel- forging a path on the rocky, uneven road to redemption comes to worship the steadfast, independent and strong heroine Sarah.
This book had some of the most heartachingly touching scenes imaginable. The writing was exquisite and deeply moving...a collection of moments to relish.
From pearl necklaces to piano benches...the passion was OFF the charts scorching, the love deep and divine.
One has to read between the lines on this one, see the shades of grey, dig deep to consider a hero tainted forever by his past and look for the goodness amongst all the darkness.
Who rescued who? It's not a perfect love story and that's what made it unique...it challenges the reader.
Beautiful.
Highly recommend.

Slow burn but nice.

This is the third book in The Rescued from Ruin Series by Elisa. It was wonderful to see Colin Lacey get his own HAE. Even a scoundrel can reform and it takes a young lady named Sarah Battersby who is independent, stubborn and beautiful. Colin is trying to redeem himself by helping to bring down a vicious criminal that steals, tortures and kills anyone who gets in his way.
The book opens with Sarah finding Colin on the side of the road where he winds up after escaping from his enemy. Sarah nurses him back to health and in exchange Colin just has to pretend that he is her fiancee so the disgusting Mr. Foote will leave her alone. This is where the adventure begins that brings them both into perilious danger, nerve racking adventure and soulful redemption.
Elisa's writing is wonderful, exciting and you won't want to put this one down. I will admit that I cried a few times at the heart wrenching emotional moments in this book. I really enjoyed all three in the series and cannot wait until she releases another book.

People in our beloved fiction tales seem to have the capabilities to learn and mature much more so than in our current day and age. Would it not be awesome if our current generation could do the same?
This is NOT a clean series. Those who actually prefer steamy to clean and sweet might not view it as flawed. Due to this aspect, I recommend it with reservations. If you prefer clean and sweet reads, avoid this book. It is not fair to an author when readers provide bad reviews about steamy scenes if they know they are included in advance. I have been guilty of this offense myself, and take this opportunity to apologize for doing so. It takes a lot of time and effort for an author to research and write each book. And there are readers who prefer the material included in this one to a clean and wholesome read. However, I actually prefer the latter. This does have steamy sex scenes, so if you like a sex-free book this is not it. If you enjoy steamy reads, jump into this book looking forward to the pleasures painted here in words.
Although this can be read as a stand-alone, it is beneficial to read the books in order for a clearer understanding.
This book does have the ability to stand on its own, but if you read them in order, you will become more familiar with some of the other characters that carry over. I have enjoyed the two previous books in the series
immensely and in fact, I credit this author with pulling me out of a huge historical romance slump. For readers familiar with the series, this is Colin's book, the scapegrace brother of the Duke of Blackmoor and villain of the previous two books. I love an anti hero and was really looking forward to seeing how the author was going to redeem Colin who, in my opinion, was pretty unredeemable after his actions in the previous books. Sadly, this is where the author lost me because Colin was never really redeemed in my eyes. He apologized but aside from his apology tour I didn't see Colin change, I was told he changed but there was very little in the way of action to support this. His actions in the previous books are explained away by his upbringing by indifferent, somewhat abusive parents and youthful stupidity. This would have worked for me if Colin had shown any appreciable growth during the course of his book. Colin's was not the only character that suffered from poor development, heroine was so unremarkable that I couldn't recall her name as I was reading the book! There was also a huge Insta Love thing going on, love declarations happened so suddenly that I went back to see if I had missed any chapters. I hadn't. In the end, the story suffers from too much telling and not enough showing, a lack of character development and puzzling actions by secondary characters, who have no reason to want to help Colin, suddenly bending over backwards to get him out of a hole he dug himself. I'm really looking forward to book 4 and hoping that particular scoundrel gets redeemed properly.

Recommended only to read the series in order.

I love an anti hero and was really looking forward to seeing how the author was going to redeem Colin who, in my opinion, was pretty unredeemable after his actions in the previous books. Sadly, this is where the author lost me because Colin was never really redeemed in my eyes. He apologized but aside from his apology tour I didn't see Colin change, I was told he changed but there was very little in the way of action to support this. His actions in the previous books are explained away by his upbringing by indifferent, somewhat abusive parents and youthful stupidity. This would have worked for me if Colin had shown any appreciable growth during the course of his book. Colin's was not the only character that suffered from poor development, heroine was so unremarkable that I couldn't recall her name as I was reading the book! There was also a huge Insta Love thing going on, love declarations happened so suddenly that I went back to see if I had missed any chapters. I hadn't. In the end, the story suffers from too much telling and not enough showing, a lack of character development and puzzling actions by secondary characters, who have no reason to want to help Colin, suddenly bending over backwards to get him out of a hole he dug himself. I'm really looking forward to book 4 and hoping that particular scoundrel gets redeemed properly.

Desperately Seeking a Scoundrel is the third installment in the "Rescued From Ruin" series. I had so much fun with this one, while its not my favorite so far, it was still a solid 4 star read and I really enjoyed this one fully. It was so interesting seeing Colin get a book. I actually had thought Colin's book was book 4 as that is what other readers had referred to but it was a different character that they must have been referring to. So, all this time I thought I had read Colin's book haha But now I actually got Colin's book and I really enjoyed it. I really liked the small moments where we see him work through his redemption. It wasn't quite as much as I think he should have had, but the moments that we do get to see from him are deeply emotional. What I think I loved the most was the heroine and how she waits to get his story before making judgment. One of my favorite things about this author is that she writes the BEST heroines in how they treat the heroes and aren't super feminist crazy ones. They are strong willed but also aren't toxic in how they treat the heroes, she is a prime example in how heroines need to be written more in books.
Overall I found Desperately Seeking A Scoundrel to be a delightful read and I absolutely adored it. The story was endearing and sweet, and loved the small blend of suspense to the plot that added something more to the story. If you love historical romance and like more authenticity, I highly recommend this author.

I had a few things to say about this particular book though so here goes.
Colin Lacey was a very problematic character. He had been a wastrel and drunk. He had done two very bad things. Not having learned from the appalling results of the first mistake, he willfully made another. This was a hero with very bad character traits who needed a lot of redemption.
He was let off the hook too early and too easily. There should have been way more time given to his redemption arc. In fact I would say that his book should have been the last book. This series of books took place over approximately 10 years. I think he should have had to really strive to grow and change for at least that length of time. But he just seemed to shrug it off with a I was bad but now I'm good.
I feel like he should have fought much harder to forgive himself and grow to believe he was worthy of a good woman's love. I think the story would have been stronger if he had solved his own problems instead of running straight to his brother for help.
This book was the biggest wasted opportunity in the whole series. I still enjoyed it but it could have been soooo much better.

Honestly, I did not expect to love this one as much as I did. Especially not after the last book, where Colin was... let's just say, not great. But wow, total redemption arc. He went from "ugh, this guy?" to "protect him at all costs" and I was here for every second of it.
The setup is classic fake engagement chaos, but done so well. Sarah needs a fake fiancé to avoid a terrible marriage and buy herself some time. Colin, freshly rescued, wounded, and on the run from danger, just happens to be in the right (or wrong?) place at the right time. She patches him up, he agrees to play the part, and boom — forced proximity, shared secrets, growing tension, and feelings that start to feel way too real.
I love when a fake relationship turns into something real, and this one does it in a way that feels earned. The banter is great, the pining is delicious, and the payoff is satisfying. Also, I may never get over how much Colin grew as a character. He surprised me in the best way.
Highly recommend if you’re into historical romances with heart, heat, and a redemption story that actually works.

I have read other reviews in which people claimed to eventually like Colin after all he did in the previous books of the series. I do not share the sentiment. I was kind of warming up to him seeing as he was making an effort to change and he seems to regret his past actions but he spoilt it all when he said he believed that a 16 or was it 17 year old innocent he seduced would move on to someone else when he was done with her. As if he was talking about some loose or experienced woman. That killed whatever tolerance I had for him.
Sarah was too good for him. Seeing my dislike for Colin, I believe Sarah deserves better. It was interesting to see all the previous cast and I am anticipating Chatam's story.
The plot was pretty basic. It held little challenge and even less amusement.
I might have been tempted to go higher with my rating if not for my dislike for the Hero of the story and I use that term as loosely as possible and while the Heroine was passable,she wasn't intriguing enough.

WARNING!! Don't buy this book!! If you don't like hearing about torture of the hero Colin of the story and then vague references to a 12 year old girl being raped and molested by the heroine Sarah Battersley stalker Felix Foote. Then don't bother with this story. I will admit I enjoyed the middle of the story but To Cut The Heroine's Throat toward the end of the story was a Bridge to Far for me. Yes Sarah lives but why so much gruesome scenes at the beginning and the end of the story? This Ruined the whole story for me. I hate stories with children and women being abused!! So 1 star and I will be returning this kindle ebook.

Talk about redemption! I was really wondering how will my view of Colin change especially after his wrongdoings… turns out I didn’t have to worry! The story was really good, had chemistry and spice and a good old dose of humor to go with it.
The series is getting better and better, the sneaks about the characters to come caught my attention and so I will be stalking the author because I need the next books ASAP.

Great book
I loved book 3 Collins story. I loved Sara and cousin's interactions both funny and serious. It was also great to see the other family members as well as Colin gained their forgiveness.

I don't really mind 3 star reads but what I DO mind is books that start off as 5 star reads and then taper down to a 3. True emotional distress really 😭😭. Elisa Braden has great writing but this story was missing that special something.
