DNF 64%. After an OK sex scene I still have to DNF this sucker. What a STUPID PLOT!!
She meets him while still married. They lust after each other but don't do anything about it. Her husband dies in an accident. They start to court, tho she always feels guilty. 2.5 years later, they get it on. But she's determined to reject his hand in marriage tho she loves him... bc they've had a few mishaps/ bad luck together in which no one was hurt, but some bonnets were sacrificed... oh and I guess he fell for her bc she amusingly rhymes and organizes out of habit.

One of the less enjoyable Elisa Braden books, but by no means a bad one.
A quick review for a quick read novella
Plot Summary
Lord Wallingham and Lady Willoubhy cross paths when she is still married. Insta-lust & insta-love. Julia is now a widow, and Charles is hell-bent on pursuing her. A disastrous courtship ensues (glimpses in the Lady Wallingham quips in the previous books). Julia is resisting, Charles changes tactics, no more courting but seducing. Seduction, sex, resisting, Lady Wallingham saves the day and HEA.
My Thoughts
- Great writing, different story, quirky characters, but you know all that because this is Elisa Braden we speak of.
- The pacing and continuity of the story felt abrupt. We saw flashes of their accident ensuing courtship in previous books, the author did try to tie it all together in the story and unfortunately, it did not fit. I had to keep an eye on the dates to figure out the timeline. That took away half a star.
- Charles was a delicious hero. Oh, how I love a salt & pepper haired hero in his forties! Quiet, intelligent, patient, long-suffering, intense and very, very sexy. He reminded me of a calm brewing before the storm. Yes, I am rhyming, I guess I picked that nasty habit up from Julia.
- I skimmed most of Julia chapters. She was boring, run of the mill, and frankly, TSTL. Nothing is more tedious in HR than a heroine fancying herself a martyr. Oh boo. She had OCPD symptoms and she rhymed when she was stressed. That was the most interesting thing about her. I have no clue why Charles fell for her, we have to accept it because the author told us so. I think, even Ms Braden did not believe in her heroine. Julia took away one star from the rating. She called him Charlie, for heaven's sake! Charlie is not a name for a 40-year-old intense sexy marquess!
- These two only had great sexual chemistry, no intellectual chemistry and another half a star gone.
- Oh but the steam! It was steamy excellentness, alas it started at halfway mark and ended too quickly, especially for a book that has 'mistress' in the title.
- Lady Wallingham & Lord Dunston have an interesting appearance!
My Recommendation
Read it for the steam and Lord Wallingham. And I am starting the next one - Confessions of a Dangerous Lord.

Finally!! The Marquess of Wellingham's love story!!
Charles' first wife was bat shit crazy. He was beyond miserable. When his wife died, he was content to live out the rest of his life as a single man. Until he met Julia.
Gah, it was great to finally meet the son of the Dowager Marchioness of Wellingham. She's a total dragon. I loved the interactions between her and her son, Charles as she tries to manipulate him.
Charles won me over with his patience, romance, and temper. He and Julia were perfect for each other.

It's quite a feat to bore a reader with a novella, but Elisa Braden easily managed it with this one.
The misleading title (and blurb) might be part of the reason for my disappointment. I thought I was getting a steamy story, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Before the MCs finally have sex for the first time, half the pages are wasted on endless explanations, flashbacks, and fruitless attempts at seduction. Unfortunately, the second half of the story isn't much better, and it still isn't particularly steamy. Furthermore, the hero isn't very appealing, and the heroine is pathetic.

Well, that’s a rather misleading title. I expected tons of steamy love scenes, 12 nights worth at most! lol. What a disappointment this ended up being because of it. Although the author provides background, I think I may have to read the previous book in the series to grasp their secret attraction a little better. This is another reason why I didn't enjoy this novella.

An somewhat jumbled but OK read.
Kind of rushed story and some of it is a little bit nonsensical/illogical.
Great that it has a “older” heroine and hero (heroine 30...and hero 40+)
But the heroine is a tad bit to unsure of herself for a woman in her age. (the stuff with the heroes mother and what she said/did and the heroine did not challenge it etc.)
The heroes mother (Lady Wallingham) is a cantankerous and rude/unpleasant old lady that likes to interfere in other people's lives among other things.… her character is over the top.
The heroine deals with infertility…. Or does she ?
It would have been nice if the ending was a little bit less obvious/cliched and more original.

This was an ok 2.5 star read. It was a novella so there was not a lot of room to develop character, but the author did quite a good job of it. I have always enjoyed the preamble to each chapter in this series with the comments of the Marchioness of Wallingham, but she absolutely pissed me off in this book. Basically, she was an out and out manipulative bitch to the heroine and her abrupt volte face near the end was simply not credible.
The hero was a bit of a macho dude who seems to think that hawt sex would be all that was needed to win over the heroine. There was some of that, (hawt sex) of course, and the heroine certainly threw herself into the sex with gay abandon once she had agreed to sleep with the hero, but as a basis for marriage it was a bit tenuous. Again, novella format means you have to sacrifice some of the relationship building, which is a pity, because I actually quite liked the MCs in this story.

4.5 stars...This is more of a novella than a full length novel...but the story is one of my favorite romance tropes- the hero and heroine are in love with each other but circumstances are keeping them apart. I enjoy reading about the deep yearning of unfulfilled love and the struggles of overcoming the obstacles to be with each other. This was a surprisingly well developed book. I really enjoyed the personality quirks of the heroine, rhyming and organizing. I also appreciated that this was not about a teenager marrying a man child. This was two mature individuals with a refined perspective of life and the world around them. The moment of first attraction was so beautifully done the pages were alive with heat of attraction and the longing was palpable; I felt I was a part of the scene.
Two minor issues that made me deduct .5 stars. The editing was confusing in the middle with the flash back and back to present....it took me a few pages to realize I was back to reading about the hunting party....the other was the surprise in the end....I wish Ms. Braden had not finished the book that way I wanted to read about their love transcending their sufferings, but it made sense I guess for the genre of this book and the expectation of the readers. Definitely recommend it. Fast and satisfying read and it is currently free on Kindle USA.

If you have been following the series, you know who Charles is and have read of his mishaps while wooing a certain widow. You also got to know him a little better while he was giving James advice in the previous book - but even with all this former knowledge - you don't really know Charles until you read this book!!
Charles has wanted Julia ever since he met her, however at that time her husband was very much alive and they kept their distance from each other. Fast forward 2 years, Charles has been wooing Julia for the past year and wants to marry her - but she has a secret and even though she dearly loves Charles, she will not marry him.
This novella is fantastic, it is well written, flows wonderfully, the love scenes are steamy (YAY!) and the ending is going to bring a tear to your eye!
This book is part of a series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone title - personally I think you should read the entire series but at the very least read the previous book "When a Girl Loves an Earl", it will give you a bit more backstory on Charles and Julia.

2.5 stars. Not a fan of this novella. I liked some portions of it, but for such a short story, I expected better.
The hero of this story meets the heroine while she’s still married to her (soon to be dead) husband. They feel an instant attraction, and she castigates herself for it, even after her husband’s death. She returns to London a year after she is widowed and meets the hero again, who begins to court her. She initially wants to accept his marriage proposal, but instead rejects him because his mother discourages her. His mother is Lady Wallingham, who takes part in all of the books of this series. What threw me the most, was that the heroine doesn’t reconsider marrying the hero until his mother once again intervenes. It made me angry at the heroine for the entirety of the book… she was trying to marry OM all because of some old lady’s opinion. She had no spine of her own, and it just got old as the book progressed.
Safety was fine for me, but the hero had several mistresses during the separation, and possibly beyond, although that part is unclear. Meanwhile, the heroine stayed celibate. She was widowed and was never with anyone besides her husband. I personally dislike the disparity.

This is a quick-paced novel with very strong characters. This focus is on this couple most of the time, as far as I can recall. The drama is mixed with humor and multiple jolts of intense passion burning and crackling between the two.
So many little things attract these two to one another, yet their struggle to make a life long commitment is like a black cloud above their heads. Just when you think the resistance will dissipate like stormy clouds and the sun will shine, whoosh another bout of resistance appears. Waiting for the clouds to break and the sun to shine . . .
The cover on the book did not reflect what this couple might have looked like in their era, but was instead a glimpse of a much more modern couple. And therefore, it portrays a deceptive impression.
This is NOT a clean series. Those who actually prefer steamy to clean and sweet might not view it as flawed. Due to this aspect, I recommend it with reservations. If you prefer clean and sweet reads, avoid this book. It is not fair to an author when readers provide bad reviews about steamy scenes if they know they are included in advance. I have been guilty of this offense myself. It takes a lot of time and effort for an author to research and write each book. And there are readers who prefer the material included in this one to a clean and wholesome read. However, I actually prefer the latter. This does have steamy sex scenes, so if you like a sex-free book this is not it. If you enjoy steamy reads, jump into this book looking forward to plenty.
This book is able to stand on its own, but if you read them in order, you will be more familiar with some of the characters that carry over. Each story does include its own H.E.A., which is always a good way to conclude the adventure you have chosen to become acquainted with.

This is a quick-paced novel with very strong characters. This focus is on this couple most of the time, as far as I can recall. The drama is mixed with humor and multiple jolts of intense passion burning and crackling between the two.
So many little things attract these two to one another, yet their struggle to make a life long commitment is like a black cloud above their heads. Just when you think the resistance will dissipate like stormy clouds and the sun will shine, whoosh another bout of resistance appears. Waiting for the clouds to break and the sun to shine . . .
The cover on the book did not reflect what this couple might have looked like in their era, but was instead a glimpse of a much more modern couple. And therefore, it portrays a deceptive impression.
This is NOT a clean series. Those who actually prefer steamy to clean and sweet might not view it as flawed. Due to this aspect, I recommend it with reservations. If you prefer clean and sweet reads, avoid this book. It is not fair to an author when readers provide bad reviews about steamy scenes if they know they are included in advance. I have been guilty of this offense myself. It takes a lot of time and effort for an author to research and write each book. And there are readers who prefer the material included in this one to a clean and wholesome read. However, I actually prefer the latter. This does have steamy sex scenes, so if you like a sex-free book this is not it. If you enjoy steamy reads, jump into this book looking forward to plenty.
This book is able to stand on its own, but if you read them in order, you will be more familiar with some of the characters that carry over. Each story does include its own H.E.A., which is always a good way to conclude the adventure you have chosen to become acquainted with.

I was almost done with this book and I ended up losing all of my notes on it. So there’s something things I’m not 100% sure on, like the steam, but that’s okay. I won’t have content warnings for this one either, because if there were any, they were saved in my notes :(
I really enjoyed this one. I am such a fan of Mary Sarah’s narration. I just fall into her stories with a soothed smile on my face. I am always shocked by how much dislike she gets in the romance community. (*holds Mary Sarah comfortingly*)
Anywayyyy we get the story of Julia and Charles who have been in the background in a number of scenes throughout the series, as well as Charles mother, the intimidating prelude to every chapter, the dowager Marchioness. I’ll admit I didn’t pay much attention them, but I ended up really loving their story!
I think the heroine’s whole reason for her hesitancy and push back was a bit silly, but I am able to forgive that. I eat up hero pursues and he pursues her so hard in this one. So I was just happy as a clam reading this entire novel with it’s angsty chase.

This was so much fun. The Marquess of Wallingham’s troublesome wooing of the widowed Duchess, Julia Willoughby. His mother, the Duchess of Wallingham has many pithy comments to make in person, and in the chapter heading. She’s against the Union. She’s interfering! Charles would not be pleased, if he ever finds out! He loves Julia to distraction. Two years Charles has pursued Julia and for two years she’s said NO. Charles persists. Fantastic!

Ok. This was THE BEST. So, so, so romantic. Don't even *think* about skipping this novella if you are currently reading the series, and if you're not currently reading the series you are totally missing out, my book-loving friend.

So refreshing this featured an older hero and heroine (40/30). Our Hero, Charlie is a delicious witty, single minded gentleman who knows EXACTLY what he wants: the quirky, intelligent and lovely heroine Julia.
An engrossing, solid plot with beautiful writing, heartpounding lust, just the right balance of angst, tenderness and humour and a BEAUTY of an HEA💕
Elisa Braden is HR author royalty.

Another wonderful book from Elisa about Charles and Julia. One I have been waiting for since the 3rd book in the series. Fantastic one-liners from Lady Wallingham. Surprisingly, Charles is more of a manly figure than originally expected, full of passion, fighting for the love of this woman.
Lovely dedication to her band of blue stockings which I am proud to be part of.
Thank you Elisa for another great book for the Rescued to Ruin series. Roll on book 7.

Perfect little novella while I was wrapping presents. I was saving it for a rainy day, and it's not quite raining but it was still fun.

Loved the cleverness in this Regency. This author knows how to set the stage for some heat, using innocuous situations. This is a novella and #6 in the series. I will definitely pick up the others.

Started not to read this Novella, but as it was a part of the Rescued from Ruin series I read it. Oh I am so glad I did.
This is the short story of Charles/Charlie Bainbridge 14th Marquess of Wallingham. and the son of the infamous Dowager Marchioness Wallingham Dorothea Bainbridge. The Dragon as she is know in all the other stories. She is in all the stories in this series. She is a real Dragon Lady but everything she schemes to do comes to rights and I just loved the busybody old lady.
Julia Willioughby is a widow. I don't usually like stories about widows and widowers. I liked Julia and I understood her reasoning for not wanting to marry Charlie. After 9 years of a previous marriage she thought she was barren. So Charlie has been courting and chasing after her for 2 full years. When he finally catches her they get a very HEA and she is not barren after all!!!! Loved the ending!

His arm came hard around her waist, forcing her back into his body. That long, lean, athletic body.A fun and light novella (doesn't have to be read in order of the series). The main characters were sweet and the chemistry between them is sizzling !! Charles is a very adorable hero and I love that he's normally viewed as quite staid and calm, but when it comes to Julia is overcome by his feelings for her. Great to have an older-than-usual couple as well.
"Where do you think you can hide from me, Julia?" The words were more heat than sound against her nape. "Here in Dunston's library? A dowager cottage in Bedfordshire? There is nowhere I would not find you."
This was the man only Julia seemed able to see. His mother's son. Fierce and determined. A dragon in his own right. He wanted her. She knew that. Perhaps he even loved her, as she did him. But wanting something—even loving something—did not make possessing it the proper choice.
The "disastrous" encounters between them are quite funny, and it was nice to have the flashbacks charting their relationship. It did make the transition from formality to "Charlie" a bit rougher and I think could have used one or two more, but regardless—high enjoyable novella that I would definitely recommend.
My one annoyance was the often-used ploy of I-won't-tell-him/her-why-I'm-splitting-us-up-because-it's-for-her/his-good-even-though-I-love-them-etc. Drove me bonkers, because I've always hated that ploy; I'm not big on the miscommunication ploys in romance and while not the most annoying kind (don't get me started!), it definitely falls in that category.
SERIES. I recommend reading the series in order, though I honestly would say to skip the two books that I didn't like; of course it's always completely subjective, but the fact that I'm saying skip them while also saying read the whole series in order ... well, that tells you something about how much I disliked them. The others were GREAT!!

Julia was married before and she feel she knows her worth. And she feels she is not worthy of marrying Charlie. Even though, Charlie is who she thinks about all the time. The first time she met him, she felt a strong attraction and that was the first time she ran away from London. This is why she has tried to keep her distance from him. Julia has to learn to overcome her feeling unworthiness for Charlie, so her attraction can grow.
Charlie has always wanted Julia. Charlie has tried to woo Julia for 2 years and she still pushes him away. Charlie had to show Julia that she was worthy of being happy. Charlie shows complete patience as he woos Julia into accepting a life with happiness and not settling for just okay.
This was a short story that shows 2 people who are destined to be together. Julia is completed by the love of Charlie. In the end, everything they wanted comes together. And Julia learns what love is no matter what the circumstances are.
This is great novella. The author did a great job developing the story with the quirks of the characters. I look forward to reading more from the Elisa Braden.

I received the book as an ARC from Miss ELISA BRADEN and also have pre- ordered this novella on Amazon. Book 6 in rescued from ruin series is a much awaited book for me cuz I always felt that Charles Wallingham have to be a force to reckon with considering that he is the Dowager's son. If you haven't read book 1-5 of the series then you are missing out a lot.
Anyway, this is one short story you savour like a dessert, you read it slow cuz you know it is a novella. The writing is sublime, you feel like you are in the book, experiencing all these roller coaster of emotions with the characters.
Charles and Julia's story will leave you feeling like the possibilities are endless.
Such is the magic of Elisa's books.

My first DNF for this author and I am so sad! I have really loved everything I have read previously about this author, but this heroine drove me batty. She was so flakey, and I got to about 50% and still don't understand why she was so resistant to the hero, it just didn't make sense. Hopefully the next one will be a better read for me.

Elisa Braden keeps me enthralled in the story once again. I loved finally getting to read about Charles and his widow. It was a very sweet, yet at times, heartbreaking and angst filled story - of which Braden does often and does well.
In this one, Charles (or Charlie as Julia calls him, which is adorable) is bound and determined to get Julia to marry him. She was on the verge of saying yes awhile back but suddenly changed her mind. (She had a little help).
They come to an agreement to spend the Christmas holiday together as lovers. Julia expects it to end and Charles is thinking of all the ways he can woo her into marriage.
Another good edition to the Rescued from Ruin series.
My Rambling Things I Thought:
❈ Charles' thing about Julia? Loves to watch her pour tea. In fact that was the moment he fell for her. The first time she poured his tea. These are so cute! The heroes obsessions with their lady loves.
❈ Took Lady W a bit to realize she should be wanting her son's happiness...you know, that being marriage to Julia?
❈ He loves how she rhymes too. Too cute.

Who says a Novella can’t tell a great story. I absolutely fell in love with Charles and Julia love story their chemistry was palpable. Truly a wonderful read full of emotion, sexual tension and love.
FYI the sex scenes were 🔥🔥 very hot and surprisingly tender at the same time. I was so happy for them in the end ❤️
“This is like nothing I’ve ever felt,” she confessed in a whisper. “A consuming kind of hunger. Difficult and peculiar. I want to devour you. Absorb you.” His breath, which had been unnaturally even, stopped. Started again in a long, inward hiss. Panted at her ear. “Julia.”

I love this author, and I do love these characters, particularly since their story has been told in bits and pieces through the hero's mother's letters in all the books in the series, and this book brings those pieces together. Unfortunately, this book does exactly what I knew it would when I read the description: that is, the old "the only path to a happily ever after is if the infertile heroine miraculously gets pregnant with the hero." I am desperate for more stories about women with infertility who find true, lasting happiness without having children. I don't want her infertility to disappear because of love or the hero's magic peen or whatever. I know the idea is often that the heroine was never infertile and was wrongfully scorned by her first husband, but that story has been done to death. There are plenty of epilogue babies out there. True love stories really hit the mark when the couple DOESN'T get everything they want, and are still deliriously happy. I'm a lady with infertility who needs more happily ever afters NOT dependent on children or parenthood, especially when the couple has already chosen to be with each other despite knowing they won't have children. I don't know why I keep letting myself be disappointed by this cliched ending.
