Truth or Dare

Rate this book
Their paths would've never crossed...but fate had another plan in mind.

Madison (Maddie) Connors is awkward, unpopular, and definitely not the type of girl that Josh Oakland usually dates—so why is he asking her to be his girlfriend?

The truth? Because Josh’s best friend dared him to, but he can’t tell her that.

So instead, Josh says that he doesn’t want to be a player anymore and needs her help to change; and while Madison still has her doubts, she agrees to help him anyway.

Could spending time together turn their relationship into something real? Or will the truth ruin their chances?

One player. One nobody. One dare that changes everything.

~Truth or Dare is an opposites attract/out of her league high school romance.~

One player. One nobody. One dare that changes everything.

My rating is 4.5 stars

Truth or Dare reminded me of an 80's coming of age movie. Wait! That's a good thing. I love watching those movies!

Maddie is so adorably clueless. Thinking she was going to help Josh, she jumped wholeheartedly into this ""project"" and created charts and notebooks and lists. Oh my! My favorite character trait of hers was the way that when he would tell her something she had trouble believing, she would take a minute or two and then make the choice to believe him. Because it was the right thing to do. Oh, and she was so idealistic and had such great dreams of what a relationship would look like. Yeah, other than her making some stupid decisions, I liked her a lot.

Josh, on the other hand, was pretty much an arrogant, handsome, self-absorbed, teenage boy. I loved the way the author wrote his and his best friend's characters. It was as if she was really in the head of the teenage boys. She didn't try to pull any punches or make them into the kind of guys that idealistic girls like Maddie thought they were. Or at least, that they could be.

They did grow on me, though. Being around Maddie allowed both of them to get a different view of things and gave them both a taste for something better than they had thought about.

I really appreciated how the book stayed very clean. The characters (the boys, especially) may not have had clean language, but there were only hints of this. And at the parties, there was no mention of alcohol or drugs or inappropriate behavior - aside from the pool thing. While Josh was a player, it appears that his actions extended only to kissing.

Admittedly, it has been a while since I've been in high school, and I never did hang out with people like Josh or Tristan. However, I found it a little hard to believe that so many girls would have been throwing themselves at Josh. And not caring that he pretty much made out with all of them all the time. But, maybe that isn't as unrealistic as I think.

While there is no indication that this is part of a series, Pixie Perkins' first book, My Boyfriend's Best Friend is about Maddie's older brother, Derek. As I read this book, I could tell that there was something more that had happened with him and there is probably more about her sister Faith as well. So you might want to read that one first, though it isn't necessary.

This was a fun diversion from the more serious books I've been reading lately. If you enjoy high-school ""drama"", you should consider giving Truth or Dare a read.

The dare to date

Reader’s Notes:

– there are 9 cut off curse words/terms

– this is told from both Josh and Madison’s points of view

Review:

I really liked this book! It was interesting to see a dare mixed with mistaken identity, the fake dating trope, trying to help someone to be better, a first relationship, and two guys end up liking the girl (for a little bit anyways). I loved that Maddie was so hopeful for her first real kiss/relationship and thought of it (in a good way) as a fairytale waiting to happen! And Josh wasn’t all that interested in Maddie at first, but it was cool to see when he switched over to wanting her company. And despite being a player, he respected her boundaries and felt the need to stand up for/protect her from things/people she had never been around. I also really enjoyed Tristan hovering around Josh and Maddie and butting into everything. It was comical, as were his interactions with Maddie’s best friend Kelsey 😂 (🐟 👄).

There were some things that I was confused about (what happened to Trevor? He just kinda disappeared after awhile of no conversation with Maddie) but the story was so good (the romance/storyline between the two main characters) that it didn’t bother me too much.

As I mentioned above, Josh is dared by his best friend (Tristan) to date a girl of Tristan’s choice for a month without her finding out about the dare (note: both guys are notorious players and don’t do girlfriends). If he can do it, Tristan will give Josh permission to pursue Tristan’s sister (the one girl he can’t have). Josh thinks it will be a piece of cake and a no brainer to accept. If only he knew what he signed up for…

Maddie is a goody two shoes who has never had a date and pines for a jock who doesn’t even know she exists. She also is the girl Tristan chooses to be Josh’s girlfriend for the month long dare.

After a misunderstanding, Josh convinces Maddie to date him to help him be better boyfriend material instead of the player he’s been. While she is confused to be asked to be Josh’s girlfriend at all, let alone how it pertains to helping him, she is excited to try. Maybe a little too excited for Josh’s taste though 😂.

After they get past the very beginning of their relationship, they become more comfortable around each other and hang out more. And as they learn more about one another, the more they think about each other instead of the people they had on their minds in the beginning…

You get hints that they might like each other but it’s really subtle, sometimes too subtle. We don’t get to know josh very much, so there isn’t much depth to him or Madison for that matter. And then you are left with questions as whatever happened to Trevor? Was he jealous or just a terrible friend. There was so much potential in this book , and things that were just not relevant .

So basically all that’s happened in this book so far:
Tristan decides he wants to torture his friend Josh by “daring” (basically forcing) him to date a girl of his choosing (Madison) for a month, and not dating any other girls. Josh then asks her out, saying he wants her help to not be a player anymore. They don’t go on any dates, barely talk to each other, and don’t feel anything toward each other besides annoyance. What part of that feels like being boyfriend and girlfriend? Also, Tristan keeps hitting on Madison, which doesn’t make any sense since he’s the one who started the dare in the first place.

Basically what I’m expecting is for this to drag on for a while, until the month is almost over, and then something will happen that causes Josh and Madison to maybe actually like each other. Then Josh has to break up with her and tell her it was all a dare, as per the requirements of the dare, drama ensues, but then they get back together because they just love each other so much and Josh has decided he is no longer a player for some reason.

Sorry I just didnt like it very much. The main story was good, but there werent any sparks between the main couple. He found her annoying through the whole book exept for few last pages.
After finishing the book I have still unanswered questions:
Why did he call her Bruny? What happend with Trevor?

Alright

There's wasnt much of a build up. The chemistry was meh. I really didn't like how Josh constantly wanted to "roll his eyes" whenever maddie talked. They had nothing, nada, zip in common. There wasnt a connection. I also didn't like how they both jumped into other relationships the same day they broke up.

I liked it a lot!

*Spoilers probably*

I’m a sucker for the whole fake relationship trope- even when only one of the people in the relationship knows that it is!
The characters were enjoyable, Maddie and Josh were cute together, and the story was fun and lighthearted. There were a few mentions of cursing and cut off curse words, but otherwise it was clean.
There were a lot of moments in the story I found myself smiling and even laughing out loud, then there were times I had to stop reading and try not to scream (in a good way!)
The reasons why were Tristan and Maddie’s relationship (it was fun to me), when Tristan caught feelings for Maddie (it was a great twist), and Maddie’s and Josh’s break up (it was so bittersweet!).
The only thing that would have made the story completely perfect was if Maddie actually had ended up with Tristan. They had so many little moments and a great connection. I had serious feels for them. I really thought they were going to be endgame for a while there!

This story really put me through many emotional highs and lows. Overall, it was really good. I’m looking forward to reading more of Pixie Perkin's books!

Uff why did I read this one? It kept going from bad to worse to absolutely horrible.

Picture this: The hero cannot stand the company of heroine until almost 85% of the book and then suddenly one fine day he is madly in love with her??? And then there is hero's so-called BFF who is a huge jerk (he is the hero of the next book apparently :/ ), I just wanted to punch him at so many instances.

Can't believe that same author who wrote a cute/sweet book like 'Loving Gavin' could come up with something so bad.

I guess I would actually give it a 3.5. I liked how it was told by both people's view. I thought it was kinda weird how people just kiss each other without permission. The plot was a bit cheesy, but it wasn't a terrible book.

It was such a cute book. I love the unique way these characters fell in love. You could see those feeling changing as the story progressed. We are the reader knew they had feelings for one another way before they realize these feelings themselves. There were several times through the beginning of the book I would have loved to pinch the main character Josh or just knock some sense into him but he eventually realizes things in there end. I love the way these characters didn’t know one another and got to know each other. Maddie is such a sweet and caring character. But my favorite character was a minor character Josh best friend Tristan who we also see go through changes in his life. Great new he has his own story. So if you read this one and like it you’ll definitely want to check his story out.

Just a fun read. I liked that it was more about Maddie helping Josh not being a player anymore (even if that was a lie) than them actually dating from the start.
