Lucas has been cruel to Mabel for as long as she can remember. So discovering he’s her mate is the cruelest twist of fate. There’s no way she’ll mate with him. Instead, she runs away to the city, hoping never to bond with him.
When Lucas’s dad interferes as the Alpha and tries to reunite the two, she attempts to sever all ties with Lucas and deny him as her mate. As the leader’s son, Lucas knows every loophole and demands the chance for reconciliation. He wasn’t good to her, but he wants the chance to make it right. She’s his mate, and against all odds, they are destined to be together.
Mabel has no choice but to follow the rules, and Lucas is a changed man. As a boy, he was a bully. Now he’s a man intent on winning his mate, and it isn’t a game. He wants Mabel by his side for the rest of their lives. Even if it means breaking down the wall she’s built around her heart.
Sam Crescent is passionate about fiction. She loves a good erotic romance and so it only made sense for her to spread her wings and start writing. She began writing in 2009 and finally got that first acceptance in 2011 by Total-E-Bound. She loved creating new characters and delving into the worlds that she creates. When she’s not panicking about a story or arguing with a character, she can be found in her kitchen creating all kinds of havoc. Like her stories the creations in the kitchen can be just as dubious but sometimes things turn out great.
I think I need to stop with the bully mates for a while...its starting to feel like the remorse isn't real and they don't have to work that hard to right any wrongs (no matter how much the heroine may or may not make them work for it) because the mate pull is always there and pretty much seals the deal.
The author and I have a difficult relationship. Ever since I started reading Smokey and paled at what the asshole H did to the h, I knew that this was one H who should never, never be forgiven, no matter his true regrets and the number of grovelling acrobatics he gets into. I could not finish that book because I knew the bastard was going to be gently absolved. Ever since that, I have been wary of the kind of H written by this author. And so, it was with apprehension that I gave a chance to this present book.
Now, after reading, I am torn. On one hand, this was a much better story than my previous attempt, but on the other hand, there were elements that made me uneasy. MtHB recounts the flip side of the obligation imposed by the fated link between two souls. Usually, this is one of my favourite tropes but SC's story made me realised what I already knew but denied: the bond can feel like a curse when one of the mates has been deeply hurt by the other. Granted that when the H, Lucas was acting as an immature jerk and bully, both him and Mabel did not know they were fated mates (which brings a nice message to all bullies out there: karma is a biatch!). Now, at 18, finding out that they are mates, irrepressibly attracted to each other... that was bound to not feel right for Mabel given all the bad blood Lucas had created between them. And Lucas was realistic enough to immediately know that he had f*cked up and had the gentleman sense not to force the mating on her and instead, rightfully reflected on his sins with shame and regrets.
When reading the first chapters of this book, we get it clear that Lucas is desperate and hated himself for what he did so thoughtlessly to Mabel. Which is why he does not wish to impose anything on her, despite pressure from everyone around him. Mabel was right to buck at what the fates had thrown at her; I admired how she did not lose her rationality against the bond. Everybody else understood their quandrary but concluded that Mabel had just to 'get over it' because the bond was the bond. They were right of course, because in their world, that's how it is. But I also raged against it, along with Mabel. At that point, I could not see a way out of this poisoned situation. Then, forging on, I was surprised by the elements brought in by the author. Lucas's character started to make sense: his growth, his pain, his self-imposed penance during the 3 years, his restraint, his devotion, his falling in love (when she was not even here!), his will to always let her have choices.... The writing style of SC may not be the best out there, but for a novella sized book, I applaud her genuine efforts to make the story work and show thoughtful character development. And it worked for me, as in the end, I am in the same mindset as Mabel to forgive Lucas and believe that he has changed. So my advice: read the whole book, don't give up from the first chapters.
Now, what worked less for me? Again, it all comes down to the fated trope that I usually love. When reading this book, I was torn everytime I felt that the bond was something irrepressible and that sink or swim, Mabel would have to succumb to the mating because 90% of the time the mating bond was described as being inescapable biological attraction at play. Not feelings. But lust and pleasure. The sex scenes were great and hot. Sure. But it made me sad that had that attraction not been in place, Lucas would never have made the effort to know Mabel (the album, the photos, the pining, the research...etc). I know this is inherent to the world building and the animalistic primal part of shifters, and nothing can be done, but still, it soured things a bit for me. SC tried to go beyond the lust multiple times, like when Mabel was staunched in her pain and anger despite her being attracted, or when Lucas declared that beyond biology he loved her and was prepared to set her free if that was her wish... These were genuine efforts. Yet when Lucas's inner thoughts (as well as Mabel, but not that crudely written) were mostly about intense sexual fantasies about her... it muddies this otherwise beautiful trope. He was like, 'he imagined all that he would do to her, how he would etc etc'... it was very sexy dirty talk that did not leave me indifferent as a reader for sure, but in story, shouldn't he instead be more like 'he wants to make her smile, make her happy, never make her cry etc'? And it is not even the author's fault because those contradictions come hand in hand with the trope.
Other things that bothered me:
(a) in the earlier chapters, once on the island, Lucas was constantly saying that Mabel was not giving them a real chance. What did he expect? That she would cozy up with him for 12 months and play at couple in love just like that? Instead of reproaching her that (and unfortunately, she ceded eventually given the full moon etc), he should have bit his tongue and actually courted her little by little imho. He had 12 whole months to actually show her!
(b) there were attempts for Lucas to phrase why he bullied her where there seemed to be a hint of something else (he said that as a bully, he never hated her but stupidly just pissed off at her seeming indifference/difference)... but all those conversations died quickly along the way and finally, even Mabel said it was best if they not talked on these again. Really? It was a golden missed opportunity imho. Bullying has no excuse, but still airing the possibly chaotic reasons of the bully could have pushed the story forward better.
Honestly, the story, taken into its entirety, surprised me in a good way. I ended by enjoying it quite much. If it had been expanded into a novel with deeper work on the rough edges and problematic themes, it could have been an even better book.

Briefing Ew. So he stuck his dick in everything and she didn't so much as hold hands with anyone else. W.O.W. Also apparently *cough* apparently *cough* they don't catch diseases so I'm guessing this piece of shit didn't use a condom ever.
Just saying
Dearest authors if you happen to write a bully mates romance please don't make the bully stop bullying her only coz she's his mate.
Everything, everything
Her- Er, well, I don’t like pain, nor the sight of blood. Both have a knack for making me pass out or vomit. Also her- *Doesn't faint or puke when she loses the V-card*
Sam crescent ...what are you DOING?!
Because you didn’t give me a chance. We’ve been over this, and I’m not going to repeat myself. When it’s time to claim you, you’re going to be riding my dick, and you’ll be marking me at the same time. I don’t have to manipulate you, and quite frankly, I’m insulted, but what do I expect? You’re a fucking virgin with no experience and no way of understanding that I was doing something to make you feel good.
...and he wonders why she won't give him a chance
I get that you don’t want to have anything to do with me. I was an asshole, but I’m trying to make it up to you. I’ve given you three years. I didn’t push for this before then and I gave you time and space. This is all on you, Mabel.
Dude your conceited ass bullied the girl since she was 5. Freaking 5. 3 years of niceness is not gonna magically make all that mental trauma disappear.
Why does he bully her?
I said bad shit because … you were always a stuck-up little bitch.
Now isn't that just flattering?
“Excuse me? You didn’t even know me.”
“You had your nose up in the sky.”
“I love to look at the sky, asshole. That doesn’t make me stuck-up"
Fucking ROFL. When they said he was bad at his lessons I didn't for a second think he was this stupid. You do realize that when people say nose in the air it's just a phrase right? Right? You can't be serious. YOU DID NOT JUST BULLY HER FOR LOOKING AT THE SKY.
What kind of parent forces you to tie yourself to your bully forever? Hint: A bad one
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree
Mabel, if you decide you cannot stand to be mated to my son, I will cast you out.
...Now we know where Lucas gets it from (Why does everyone keep insisting that this piece of shit is a good alpha?)
Conclusion I do think Lucas was bully but was he the only bully in the story? No. Everyone including her parents forced her to be with him. Was he the worst bully there was? HELL NO. Duke ( he DOES NOT deserve that name) was wayy worse. Randomly walking into a room without knocking to see if his son is knocking the girl up, demanding that everyone does what he says, forcing the girl to be with someone she doesn't like. The list goes on.
Here's a piece of advice- A leader- noun One who leads and doesn't impose his beliefs on someone
This book was delicious!! Big, bad, bully wolf shifter discovers his true mate is the girl he has bullied for years. She wants nothing to do with him, and continually rejects him for the pain and heartache he caused.
Commence a book of him groveling to make up for his horribleness. I freakin loved it. It was full of emotion and steam, with hero realizing and regretting the person he had allowed himself to become.
There’s a 3 year separation, where heroine leaves the pack to escape the pull to her mate. So happy to say that the hero is faithful to her, even tho he had been a manskank before knowing the heroine was his mate. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to the hero. No ow/om. No cheating. No abuse. HEA with epilogue.
I wanted to really like this, I’m a fan of bully stories. Unfortunately this started out as all tell and no show. The reader is given a brief history of these two people. I might have preferred it more had their earlier backstory been written. Because of that I found it very difficult to see their connection. Once they both come of age they realise they’re mates, but there’s no way Mabel is going to be with Lucas after years of his mistreatment. So she goes to live in the city for 3 years to avoid him, I must say I wasn’t convinced by that as he surely could have found if he wanted. He’s the alphas son and his father decrees that they must give this mates thing a chance so they’re packed off to an island alone for a year. It was all downhill from there as I found it all very dull.

What I didn't like: 1. He only changed his mind about her after his "transformation" - his first shift to wolf form - because that's when he could tell they were fated mates. He never really *changed his mind*, it was only the wolf instinct. That's how it came across to me. 2. He was only sorry he bullied his mate. He didn't feel sorry for being a bully in a general sense. Even his parents never said, "Why the hell would you bully a kid and call her a pig, what kind of son are you??" No, they had only taught him to be kind to everyone because any one of them could end up being his mate. They were only disappointed in him for bullying his mate, not for being a bully generally. They didn't say anything about his general behavior. 3. He spent the majority of the book trying to change her mind about him without any conversation. I realize he couldn't tell her right away he is a wolf, but I expected some normal heart-to-heart conversation like a normal person would have to do. Instead it was just basically: "I'm sorry I bullied you, and I'm going to spend the next year trying to convince you to have sex with me once you turn 18." That's what it felt like. I mean, WHAT? I think the only heart-to-heart was at the very end.
Can't say this was a favorite of mine. There really wasn't any groveling by the hero and instead it was like everyone thought he was in the right and the heroine should just forgive him for years of bullying all because he's her mate. I would have loved that type of angst but without anything to show that the hero truly was sorry it all felt lackluster. Sure he had a few moments where he remembered things he had done or said to the heroine and seemed to regret it but it just never felt like enough.
Why always her heroine are bullied cuz they're fat curvy whatever she calls them? ... Why her most heroine are fat it's ok to be fat curvy slim it doesn't matter but as an auther writer to make most of your books about fat people!?
Plot: Mabel is dismayed to find that when she finally shifts, her fated mate is Lucas, her high school bully. Lucas is delighted to find that he has a mate, but Mabel wants nothing to do with him after years of his cruel bullying. He can't quite explain why he acted the way that he did, but he knows he has some major groveling to do if he wants to keep his mate.
Commentary: Mabel did a great job fighting against the pull of the mating call. After all, a girl should be able to keep her dignity! Lucas did a good job of groveling with words (and actions too - his restraint really made a difference in convincing Mabel he was sincere, I think), although I wish he had been able to explain why he was so mean to her in the first place. He hinted at the fact that he might have secretly liked her and had been fighting against that, but that idea was never fully explored. Ultimately, I think he was like a lot of teenagers and simply didn't have a reason. I'm not really a fan of HS bully, and even though they had just graduated, that's essentially what this was. Still, there was a satisfying conclusion - I could feel that Lucas really loved Mabel and was proud to have her as his mate.
Grammar/formatting: There is some awkward dialogue and some of the exposition sounds more like a high school English class/Wattpad level of writing at times. That could be a function of writing so prolifically, but it's an established style at this point so I doubt it will change.
°Virgin heroine °Manwhore hero °Switching POVs °Hero with others after meeting the h (he stopped sleeping around after discovering that she was his mate so he's been celibate for 3 years) °Free of OW/OM drama °Both are 21 y/o when they meet again °Pushing away from the heroine °No cheating °No sex scenes with OP °Epilogue: 5 years later
And for a book that is not KU, I expected more. It was repetitive, missing words, some sentences did not make sense, it was just messy.
On top of that, you have a male MC that supposedly was a bully, but changed. However, he still acted like a bully, gaslighted the female MC, acted like the victim, when he truly wasn't. I mean, yes, the author did a good job at writing a 21 yr old guy, because he seriously gave off "bro" vibes. Her parents, well no, EVERYONE pissed me off in this book. Her parents didn’t stand by her at all, not once. What about her school classmates? No one saw the abuse ? Not a single one stood up for her? And then, the Alpha, forces her son on her, then gives her an ultimatum. The story had potential, but the writing fell short.
I was actually sorry that the heroine accepted her mate that bullied her so badly. His cruelty was over the top. He (I can’t use the word hero for him) said She was fat, ugly and useless repeatedly until he realized she was his mate. I wouldn’t want someone that thought of me that way. I thought that maybe they would at least address this cruelty by indicating that he was so cruel to her because he was actually privately really attracted to her. Yes, after many years of bullying, he did feel an attraction for her and then took it out on her through more bullying. There was no reason ever given for his bullying except that she was different and didn’t fawn over him as the other girls did. In addition, I don’t think this behavior is reflective of being a good alpha, even though he was a teenager. He knew he was next in line for the position, and his cruelty to her would be reflected by others, following his lead. A quote from the book “By hurting her all those years for no good reason, he suffered.” He was still mainly concerned about his suffering now because his mate wouldn’t come to him. He did regret and feel remorse, but it was mainly because of how he was suffering. I don’t see him as a good man or a good alpha.
I love Sam’s Alpha Shifter series. And this one was another great addition to this series.
Lucas was soon to be taking over as the Alpha of his pack from his dad. But he has one little problem. His mate wants nothing to do with him. Why? Because Lucas has been the biggest bully to Mabel ever since she can remember. And now that she found out he is her mate she ran away to the City.
But then he finds a loophole and demands a chance to prove that they can be together. So she and Lucas must spend one year on the island alone and give their relationship a chance. At first Mabel refuses but she has no choice but to follow the Alpha’s rules.
I have to agree with Mabel, if Lucas did all those mean things to me, he can go fly a kite I will not be getting together with him ever. But as you read the story you can see that poor Lucas does feel bad for what his done to her, but can he convince his mate that they belong together? Loved the story and loved the characters, it was over to soon 😊 ♥
The Alpha Shifter Collection just added a shiny new star to its crown with this addition. I love how the author brought these two characters together! It was not a gentle path, but one fraught with pain, anger, and a good deal of begging. The more I read the more real the story became as I found that the three years meant different things to them both with hardships and judgments that were both right and wrong. The author kept me enthralled and on the edge of my seat until the very end and I had to pause to reacclimatize to the real world. I can’t wait to read her next book!
It bother me that he was a bully to her right up until the moment he found out she was his mate. I also didn’t like how her parents were like forgive and forget and pushing her to accept him. Seems like they had no sympathy for how he treated her and didn’t support her.
It was a sweet sweet read. The guy did grovel a lot but it felt like he changed his mind about her only because she turned out to be his mate. Hated how even her parents also never supported her. The alpha was a complete asshole.
I just—ugh. No. I’m all for a bully romance but I didn’t feel the emotions at all and I felt like this story was the case where if the fated bond wasn’t there, he would still find her undesirable.
⚠️ SPOILER WARNING: This review contains spoilers.
Mated to Her Bully by Sam Crescent, part of The Alpha Shifter Collection #11, explores a fated mates story rooted in unresolved trauma and past bullying. Lucas, the Alpha’s son, bullied Mabel throughout their school years—something not shown directly but heavily referenced, painting a picture of sustained cruelty and hostility. On their 18th birthday, during the full moon when they shift for the first time, they recognize each other as mates. Mabel immediately rejects the bond and leaves town, determined to escape both Lucas and what he represents.
Three years later, she returns and asks to have the mate bond broken. Lucas agrees on one condition: they give themselves one year to truly try. If he fails to convince her, he will let her go.
What I liked:
• The forced proximity on a secluded island initially felt challenging as a trope, but once the story unfolded, it worked surprisingly well—helped by the novella-length pacing. • The internal conflict of the characters, especially Mabel’s struggle between protecting herself from past wounds and feeling the unavoidable pull of the mate bond. • Lucas acknowledging his past behavior and actively trying to become someone worthy of Mabel; I also appreciated that he didn’t passively accept blame but engaged in honest dialogue about his growth. • The relationship development felt organic and gradual, allowing space to observe emotional maturity rather than an instant shift from hatred to love.
What I didn’t like:
• While Lucas’s change is established, we never truly see the gradual transformation—only flashes of past bullying contrasted with his changed present self, which made it harder to fully connect with him.
Overall, this was an enjoyable, fast-paced read that I had fun with, but I couldn’t help wanting something more. A bit more depth—especially in Lucas’s evolution—would have elevated the story significantly.

The story was good. I enjoyed the main characters. In fact, if I didn’t really love the main characters I wouldn’t have made it through the entire book because of my frustration with her parents and the alpha. She was mated to her bully and yet there was no sympathy for her situation at all. As someone who was bullied a lot when I was younger, I can say that deep down I didn’t hope that I would “get” to spend the rest of my life with them. I was kind of hoping they would change states or fall off the planet so I could forget they existed. Being mated to one of them would’ve been a literal nightmare. And my parents would’ve been understanding. Even knowing the importance of the mate bond doesn’t take away from how horrifying the reality of her situation is. No one seemed to expect anything from him but her.
And his father threatening to throw her out of the pack if she didn’t accept him? I mean…your son is going to be with someone you forced into it ? He can spend the rest of his life wondering if she’s with him because she cares or because his dad threatened to throw her out ? What the hell? And now she can be part of a pack that has proven they don’t care about her. They care about her mate, but how she feels and what happens to her or has happened to her doesn’t matter. More than that, she is now an important part of this pack because of who her mate is. I wouldn’t even want to know these people let alone help lead them. If your alpha is giving you ultimatums and treating your bully like a victim when YOU were HIS victim? Yeah, no…in the very enlightened words of Eric Cartman: screw you guys. I’m going home.
Ugh I really liked the premise of this book and I think it could have been really good - if the author had executed it differently 🤣
I mean basically the H was an asshole to the h all throughout high school - like legitimately cruel and hurtful, being a manwhore and tossing his used condoms in her locker for just one example. She tries to reject him when they find out they are fated mates at 18 and the whole town including her parents, his father, and the H himself all gaslight her into thinking she is in the wrong for not trying?? When she requests to sever the bond the H requests a year to change her mind and the Alpha (the Hs father) sends them to a remote island to work things out. If she doesn’t “try” the H is allowed to keep asking for additional time. So basically until she changes her mind because no one is letting her say no to the future alpha.
I’m so disappointed because the idea sounded really interesting - especially where she basically leaves for 3 years after finding out they are mates - but this was not the book I wanted to read at all. The H did apologize multiple times but then he would also get angry and just make the h feel like shit for trying to stand up for herself. Cherry on the top was def her parents having no trouble making the h, their only child, feel like she needed to forgive the H - even after they heard all the shit he did to her - just because they were happy as mates themselves. The Hero’s mother was basically the only sane sounded one - she didn’t talk to the H for a month after hearing what he did - but she is non-existent in the story so it doesn’t matter.
Lucas and Mabel. The alpha heir who doesn't understand what being a leader means and bullies the sweetest shifter female throughout high school. The sweet shifter female who endures during high school only to find out at her first shift that the asshole to-be alpha bully is her fated mate.
Bully romance isn't a new trope to my book library neither are Sam Crescent books. This one is a favorite, however. I get so frustrated when forgiveness comes too quickly.
Instead of focusing on the bullying, we follow Mabel and Lucas from the night of their first shift and then jump ahead 3 years. Per pack law, before the bond can be severed, they have to spend a year together, trying to reconcile. Lucas is as determined to win Mabel over as she is to continue to hate and break free.
For the first chunk of their time together, Mabel holds strong to that hate. Bit-by-bit, Lucas shows her that he's changed. They fight. They talk. They get a bit steamy together.
We learn about the personal journey Lucas went through during the 3 years Mabel is away from the pack. He's matured and learned more about how to be an alpha leader and his fated mate. It's sweet and heart wrenching. Along with Mabel, we see his growth and the truth in his claims of love. A wonderful and rewarding read!
