“Happiness is all around you. It doesn’t exist in temporary moments. You have to invest in finding it, be open to it, choose it. For all you know, it’s staring you right in the face.”
This sequel is just as good as book one! It’s about two broken souls who learn to trust.
You may remember twenty-two year old Maele Moana from book one who worked at Beans and Books. She’s the female main character and she’s struggling after a surfing accident set her life on a completely different trajectory. She was a hairline fracture away from being paralyzed and two breaths away from drowning. She’s learned to walk again, but hasn’t gone near the water nor returned to Kauai - the site of the accident. As Andie Matthew’s maid-of-honor, she needs to return to Kaui for the Christmas wedding. Without her family on Oahu for support, can she face Kaui on her own? Determined to reclaim some of the courage she’d lost and use her time on Kauai to visit her cousin Koa, she invests in finding happiness and learns to rely on God. It makes ALL the difference in the world.
You may also remember Andie’s fiance, Warren. Well, his half-brother Adam Yates is the male main character in this novel. Like Warren, he will never have any money concerns. Unfortunately, the access to unlimited funds and the feeling that he can never be good enough compared to Warren, has driven him to addictions. Although I was hesitant at first, I started to love Adam when I saw him determined to build a new narrative that denoted peace and surrender while he kept his demons at bay. His courage to make his own way, be worthy of his name, and build his own legacy endeared him to me. Seeing these two souls determined to not let fear steal their joy made for a heartfelt read.
“The only thing worse than having a reason to fear something is to let that fear run your life.”
“As if fate itself had reached down and planned the whole thing, Adam saw who he was lined up to walk down the aisle with. It had taken six years, 9916 miles and a lot of stupid choices to put Adam smack dab in front of his mystery girl. But fate gets what fate wants.”
It may be about second chances, but it’s also about:
🌴Learning from each other
🌴Slaying monsters from the deep with the help of friends
🌴Making room for epic changes
🌴Being the best version of yourself
🌴Allowing grace to wash over you
🌴Taking time to be with each other in both worlds
I learned so many wonderful facts about Kaui:
🌴This island’s Romeo and Juliet story
🌴Naupaka flower
🌴Japanese subs causing enviro damage
🌴Rangifer constellation
🌴Location of last spot of land where the sun rises in America
Remember ‘Tunnels’ the beach on Kaui where Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a shark? That’s the same location for Maele’s surfing accident.
