An engaging and informative study of all the most important trees, fruits, and flowers mentioned in the Bible, identifying the specific species and explaining the message or symbolism behind the texts. The Prologue sets the scene by giving a simple description of the topography and climate of Israel, so that readers—wherever they are—may get a sense of what the place is like. The following sections of the book cover the flora in detail. A wide range of fruits, herbs, nuts, flowers, and trees is covered, from those of major symbolical significance such as the apple and the olive tree, as well as those less prominent like the saffron crocus, but which none the less give a fascinating picture of everyday life in the Holy Land.
This exquisitely illustrated hardback is effectively arranged with relevant supportive Bible Verses that clearly stand out. One could just read the Bible verses alone without the text. Alternatively, one could just stare at each picture and be lost in contemplation of God’s stunning creation.
The guide contains a prologue, 3 chapters devoted to trees, fruit and other crops and flowers, an epilogue with a short list of further reading and a brief index of plants mentioned in the book. The work could be used for just straight forward information about plants in the Bible or as devotional or for Christian Meditation. The book is a handful reference tool for preaching, study, teaching about agriculture in Israel during Biblical times. Despite being a hardback it is not very heavy to carry about.
Excellent read on the flora of the bible, thoroughly enjoyed it. The authors go into detail on the proper identification of some plants that have been translated for the west, and perhaps not mention the correct plant. There are also many beautiful illustrations included. My only complaint is that it is too short of a book, I could read on this topic and format for much longer...
