ஏறத்தாழ முப்பத்தைந்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு எழுதப் பட்ட சுஜாதாவின் முதல் சயன்ஸ் பிக்ஷன் நாவல் இந்த 'சொர்க்கத் தீவு'. அய்ங்கார் என்கிற கம்ப்யூட்டர் எஞ்சினியர் சொர்க்கத் தீவு என்கிற ஒரு விசித்திரப் பிரதேசத்துக்குக் கடத்தப்படுகிறான். அந்த சொர்க்கத் தீவைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தும் பிரம்மாண்ட கம்ப்யூட்டரின் கோளாறை நிவர்த்தி செய்வதற்காக அவன் அங்கே தேவைப்படுகிறான். இன்றைய அமைப்புக்கு மாறான ஒரு புதிய அமைப்பு அத்தீவில் நிலவுகிறது. மனிதர்கள் அன்பு, காதல், ரசனை போன்ற பிரதான உணர்ச்சிகள் நீக்கப்பட்டு சிந்தனா சக்தி மழுங்கடிக்கப்பட்டு கம்ப்யூட்டரின் கட்டுப் பாட்டில் கிட்டத்தட்ட அடிமைகளாக இயங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்களுள் விழிப்புணர்வு கொள்ளும் சிலர் புரட்சிக்கு ஆயத்தமாகி தீவின் தலைவன் சத்யாவை எதிர்க்கத் துணிந்து தங்களுக்கு உதவுமாறு அய்ங்காரை அணுகுகிறார்கள். அய்ங்கார் அவர்களுடன் இணைந்தானா? புரட்சி என்னவாகிறது?

About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

சொர்க தீவு திரு.சுஜாதா அவர்களின் முதல் science fiction நாவல். இந்த நாவலின் முதல் பாதிப்பு 1970 களில். நினைத்து கூட பார்க்க முடியவில்லை இப்படி ஒரு science fiction நாவல் 1970 களின் தமிழில். சுஜாதாவின் இந்த தைரியமான முயறிச்சிக்காகவே அவரை கொண்டாட வேண்டும். காரணம் 2017 வருடம் தான் இந்த புத்தகத்தை முதல் முறையாக படித்தேன். இதை 1970 ன் வாசகர்கள் எந்த அளவிற்கு இந்த நாவல் புரிந்திருக்கும் என்பது இப்பொது யோசிக்கும் போது பிரமிப்பாகவே உள்ளது. சுஜாதா அவர்கள் தன் வாசகர்கள் மீது வைத்திருந்த நம்பிக்கையை நிச்சயம் பாராட்டியே ஆகவேண்டும். அதிநவீனமாக அறிவியல் வளரும் போது அதனால் மக்களுக்கு ஏற்படும் பாதிப்புகளை மிக அழகாக சுஜாதாவின் style இல் விவரித்த நாவல்.

காலத்தைத் தாண்டிய படைப்பு. இத்தகைய சயின்ஸ் பிக்க்ஷன் நூல்கள் போன்றவை தமிழில் நிறைய வந்தால் தான் தமிழ் நிலைக்கும் என்பது நிதர்சனமான உண்மை.

1970களில் தமிழில் விஞ்ஞானப் புனைவு எழுதியமை பாராட்டத்தக்க விடயமே. அதிக விறுவிறுப்போ அல்லது சலிப்பூட்டலோ இன்றி சீரான வேகத்தில் நகரும் கதை.2017 இல் வாசிப்பதாலோ என்னவோ அதிகம் ஆச்சரியப்படுத்தவில்லை. சர்வாதிகாரி, உள்வட்டம், வெளிவட்டம், கண்காணிப்பு முறை, புரட்சியாளன் பின்னர் விசவாசியாக மாறுவது போன்ற பல விடயங்கள் ஓர்வெல்லின் 1984 ஐ ஞாபகப்படுத்தின.

'யார் சொன்னார்கள் நான் சேர்ந்துவிட்டேன் என்று... நான் இங்கு வந்திருப்பது கம்ப்யூட்டரைப் பழுது பார்க்க. இந்த தீவில் மூன்றரை லட்சம் பேர் இருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்களை நீங்கள் பத்து பேர் எதிர்க்கப் போகிறீர்களா ?'

‘மூன்றரை லட்சம் முட்டாள்கள்! அரை மனிதர்கள்... மெஷின்கள்... துயுகத்தில நடக்கும் பேதைகள். பத்து பேர் முழுவதும் விழிப்படைந்தவர்கள். அதுதான் வித்தியாசம். ’

‘Who said I joined... I'm here to repair a computer. There are three and a half lakh people on this island. Are the ten of you going to oppose them?’

‘Three and a half lakh idiots! Semi-humans... machines... sleep-walking dummies. The ten are fully awake. That is the difference.’

Firstly, I was amazed that the book was written 50 years ago. The story and themes are fresh and relevant even for the present-day. Not that there aren’t some product-of-his-time type flaws here and there but they are minor and overall it was a very satisfying read.

It starts off with a bang but is definitely slow for a good portion of the first half and some in the second half. But the events that occur during and after the slow portions make a very good payoff. I realized that I’ve called some books out for being slow and some books not even when they are and it’s all because of the level of connection or the payoffs. When the payoff satisfies my personal expectations, the slowness doesn’t matter and when it doesn’t, I’m forced to observe the slowness as an impediment to enjoying the book.

Thankfully this book falls in the former category and the ending payoff basically pulls the whole book together. As I neared the end, I was counting the pages and wondering how the story is going to resolve constantly. The beauty was that the story literally ends in the last line of the book and provides proper closure. Solid writing.

Sujatha’s foreword describes Sorgath Theevu as a sci-fi novella describing a futuristic, utopic world. Written 50 years ago, Sorgath Theevu is a first-person narrative of computer engineer, Ayngar, who is caught up in a world that trades human freedom for life’s basic needs. The concept of a dictatorial approach for the larger good of a supposedly utopic world is certainly not unique, and many sci-fi writers have employed the plot in the past. Even if I manage to overlook the lack of originality, today, I find it difficult to overlook the way he unnecessarily objectifies women purely as objects of sex, something Sujatha is definitely guilty of in many of his stories, including this short novel. Grudgingly, I can give it no more than 3 stars.

Some how it has always been sujatha who could make me read a book completely in one sitting. I am so mesmerized by the way of writing or how he explains things. This book gives that kind of energy in you to finish it off before keeping it down.

Though one can argue stating this book to be similar to some popular english books, one thing that I have felt lot better here is he has used his electronics knowledge to envision things that are very much relevant to todays thoughts and could very well be the same case in future . I could very well see the future of being to be something similar but the thought of having provided basic needs for the race compromising on things that is not taken seriously in current world made me think a lot and also think neither the villain to be a bad person. The climax is typical sujatha touch.

Go for this book, a must read sci fi. The openness on thought and envisioning of such a novel in 1973 requires lots and lots of intelligence salute you sir.

சுஜாதா அவர்களின் அறிவியல் புனைவு நாவல்கள் மேல் எனக்கு எப்போதுமே ஒரு ஈர்ப்பு உண்டு. அவரின் என் இனிய இயந்திராவும், மீண்டும் ஜீனோவும் மிக பிடித்த நாவல்கள். சுஜாதாவின் இந்த சொர்க்கத்தீவு, 1970யில் வெளியாகி இருக்கிறது. ஆனால் இந்த கதையை வாசிக்கும் பொழுது இது அவ்வளவு பழைய கதை என்றே சொல்ல முடியவில்லை.
2022யில் இந்த கதையை என்னால் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடிகிறது. ஆனால் 1970 வாசகர்களுக்கு இந்த கதையில் வரும் பலவும் கற்பனை என்ற நினைப்பு தான் இருந்து இருக்கும். ஆனால் 1970யில் சுஜாதா கற்பனையில் எழுதிய நிறைய விஷயங்கள் இன்று சாத்தியமாகி தான் உள்ளது. சொந்த தீவு வைத்து கொள்ளவது பற்றி 70களில் மக்களின் கருத்து என்னவாக இருக்கும் என்று தெரியவில்லை ஆனால் இன்று சொந்த தீவு வைத்திருக்கும் பலரை நமக்கு தெரியும். அப்படி ஒரு தீவில் நடக்கும் கதை தான் இந்த நூல்.
சொர்க்கத்தீவு என்னும் தீவில் சத்யா என்பவர் ஒரு சர்வாதிகார ஆட்சி நடத்திக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார். அங்கே எல்லாமே அவர் வைத்த சட்டம் தான். அங்கே உள்ள ஒரு கம்ப்யூட்டரை பழுது பார்க்க சென்னையில் இருந்து என்ஜினீயர் அய்ங்கர் என்பவனை கடத்திக்கொண்டு அந்த தீவுக்கு போகிறார்கள்.
தீவின் மொத்த மக்களிடம் இருந்து மாறுபட்ட எண்ணம் கொண்ட ஒருவன் அந்த அந்நிய தீவில் மாட்டிக்கொண்டு தவிக்கிறார். அங்கே நடப்பது மெல்ல புரிய வரும் போது அதிர்ச்சி அடைக்கிறார். பின் கிடைக்கும் ஒரு சந்தர்ப்பத்தை பயன்படுத்தி அவரை ஒரு புரட்சியாளர் சந்திக்கிறார்.
அந்த தீவை மீட்க உதவும் படி கேட்கிறார். இதன் பின் அய்ங்கர் என்ன செய்தார். சத்யாவிடம் மாட்டிக்கொண்டரா, எப்படி தப்பித்தார், அந்த தீவு மக்களுக்கு எப்படி உதவினார் என்பதே மீதி கதை.
எப்போதும் போல சுஜாதாவின் எழுதும், கதை சொல்லும் நடையும் கதையை தோய்வில்லாமல் வாசிக்க வைக்கிறது.

அருமையான நாவல்

தமிழ் அறிவியல் புனைவு நாவல்களில் மிகவும் வித்தியாசமான நாவல். ஆங்கில படங்கள் கதைகள் போன்ற உணர்வை கொடுத்தது. அதுவும் பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வந்த நாவல் என்பது ஆச்சர்யமாக இருந்தது.

Set in dystopia, Sorgatheevu is an unputdownable story ! As always it is astonishing how almost all of Sujatha's predictions about the future have turned out to be true . All the usual praises for Sujatha's books apply for this one, too !
