My old neighbour* posted a picture on the socials of Charlie Kirk when he died. Underneath it was a quote by George Orwell: "The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." A quick search on Google tells me this is not a quote by Orwell. Having read any work by the author makes you immediately think about what he would think of this; and on a more general level: contemporary society. Needless to say this is one the reasons that inspired me to read this collection of essays.
With the wisdom of hindsight, these essays seem like Orwell was able to predict the future (just like anytime you hear something slightly authoritarian in the news and immediately say "this is just like 1984", even when it isn’t just like 1984). However, given the fact that this is rebundled roughly 80 years after original publication, leaves me with one main question: how much can we link his writing to totalitarianism, while he might have been actually talking about something else? Orwell absolutely writes about said topic, but weaves it together into stories about him reviewing books or literature. At times, it feels like the editor did a quick ctrl + f in Orwell’s texts and looked for totalitarianism. Guess what? You can very well find it in anything he wrote, and combine it into a book. So that leaves me with giving this 3 stars. If it weren’t for Orwell’s articulate way of writing, I would have rated it much lower.
I must say that I love how Orwell approaches the level of reading skills of his fellow country men by recalculating the value of books he owns back to ounces of tobacco. Apparently that is more meaningful to him than money.

Ik hou echt van Orwell

Een prachtige collectie essays die de grootsheid van Orwell onderstreept. De inleiding echter - daar had een goede redacteur even naar moeten kijken. De storende herhalingen en wat al te gemakkelijke formuleringen zouden - indien hij ze onder ogen had gekregen - ervoor gezorgd hebben dat de schrijver een veeg uit de pan gekregen had van Orwell. Enkele slordigheden her en der maakten bovendien dat ik ging twijfelen aan de vertalingen. Ik heb zelfs overwogen om maar drie sterren te geven. Daarmee zou ik echter de essays van Orwell tekortgedaan hebben.

Zestien teksten van korte tot gemiddelde lengte waaruit de visie van George Orwell op politiek en literatuur mooi naar voren komt. Hij was een streng, scherp denker met, zo blijkt hier, een vooruitziende blik. Goed vertaald en nog altijd actueel. Aanrader!

Ik heb deze bundel gekocht omdat het een prachtige editie is en het een mooie aanleiding was om me toch in de essays van Orwell te storten. Ik bedacht me later echter dat zeker de helft van Orwell zijn kunde om de schrijfstijl gaat, en twijfel soms of de vertaler deze stijlregels (die zelfs in een vertaald essay uiteen worden gelegd) omarmt. Ik heb het idee dat soms erg letterlijke vertalingen van Engelse woorden worden gebruikt, die niet zo natuurlijk voelen.
Al met al geweldige en soms ook tijdloze essays, en een mooie inleiding voor de non-fictieboeken van Orwell. Verder zou ik deze vertaling niet per se aanraden, en zullen soortgelijke bundels in het Engels misschien de lading beter dekken.

Een leerzame verzameling Orwelliaanse kritiek op zowel zijn vak alsook zijn politieke overtuiging.
Geschreven vlak na WOII, geven deze stukken een goed beeld van zowel de literaire mores van die tijd alsook van de politieke strubbelingen. Keuzes maken. Heel lezenswaardig, en uiteindelijk de laatste twee stukken zijn inspirerend en zeker ook nu relevant. Lees vooral zijn visie op “Naar Europese eenheid” en de strubbeling van ‘Links’ om autoritaire stromingen te pareren.
