The Rewards of Being Loved

Rate this book
It was probably a terrible idea, a disaster waiting to happen: dating Harry Potter, in the middle of an investigation into a criminal conspiracy that seemed fixated on the both of them.

Of course, Draco was going to do it anyway. He'd never forgive himself if he didn't.

Sequel to "The Ordeal of Being Known".

this is the sequel to the drarry fic i logged and it was just as good as the first one. this brought me so much joy i love fluff with some plot <3 (and the spice was pretty well balanced with the fluff and plot which i appreciated) also the character growth from the beginning of the first fic to the end of this one ? delectable, it was so heartwarming to see harry finally grow to care about his own needs and wants and not just constantly try to sacrifice himself for others :,)

The first one was really sweet but this one was my favourite. They are awkward and SO in love. It was just so nice, i smiled and laughed out loud a lot. Plus, the angst was perfect. All of it made me giddy and ache in equal measure

this sequel was just as perfect as the first one, both occupy a huge space in my heart and i will love them forever and ever.

“Where is home, then?” Draco had asked, days ago, his arm over Harry’s shoulders, his lips shiny and pink from fish n’ chips. And Harry had applauded his own impulse control, barely stopping the words with you from tumbling out of his mouth.”
“Because that was home. He felt safer and more at peace in Draco’s home than anywhere else, even when he was just a patient. He didn’t know if it was the house, or just Draco himself. Either way, it was his haven, his refuge. Draco was his sanctuary.”

“You’re the only one who can make me feel like this, the only one who sees me like this, Harry, I’m so completely yours, I have been—” “Yours, Draco, I don’t know how, but it’s always been you,” Harry slurred.”

“Loving Harry was also the easiest, most natural thing he’d ever done, now that he finally allowed himself to do it. Loving Harry was just existing, at his most alive, the breath that moved in and out of his lungs without him needing to direct it. It had always been there.”

“Harry knew what love felt like, he loved loads of people, both living and dead. He knew, objectively, that some people loved him, too. But no one had ever loved him like this before. No one had ever been so focused on what he wanted or needed. No one had ever thrown him bodily out of the path of spellfire, or stood up to him for the way he lived, as one sacrifice after another, expendable. No one had ever draped him over their chest and covered him with blankets and called him darling, no one had ever held him tight while he slept, or made sure he didn’t have to stand with his back to a door, or washed his hair or called him beautiful. Exquisite. Ambrosial. Magnificent. You’re a bloody marvel, Harry.”

“Harry wanted him differently. Harry seemed to want all of him, petals and thorns and roots. He wanted Draco and only Draco, exactly how he was, with all the atrocious baggage that came with him. Harry wanted to talk with him, dance with him, care for him, wake up next to him. Kiss him until their lips were numb, make him feel safe. Wanted Draco so badly he would beg to touch him, feel him. It was new, to Draco. No one had ever wanted him like this, before.”

“Harry loved him. He loved Draco, probably too much, for someone only a few weeks into a relationship. He apparently loved Draco so much that Draco’s happiness became his own, he lived to make Draco happy, to make it better. He’d fallen in love with all of Draco”

“That’s what’s right in front of me, and I feel crazy, Draco, I want you so much. But I want all of you, I want to be around you, I want to call you mine. I want to come home to you. I’m obviously insane, because of course I love you, I don’t even know how long I’ve loved you, when the fuck did that happen? Was it sixth year, when I nearly killed you? Or maybe during the War, when you recognized me by my eyes, and lied to a room full of people who’d kill you for it? Was it feeling your body clinging to mine as we flew out of fiendfyre, or telling your mother you were safe but not that I made sure of it, or confessing to my own crimes so they wouldn’t throw you in Azkaban? Did I love you when I made sure the Minister would help you because I didn’t know how to, and threw away every stupid Daily Prophet the second I didn’t see your name in it?. Maybe it was when you walked into that hospital room, a beautiful man in a muggle suit, with a bloody songbird Patronus, that now flies from my fucking wand. I probably loved you when I couldn’t wait to come back to this house every week because it felt like home, because it meant being around you, close to you, safe…”

“You deserve to be loved, you complete idiot,” Draco muttered, frowning. “You deserve to be cherished, and cared for, and it might be selfish of me to claim that role, but I’m a selfish man, and an arrogant one, because no one has ever loved you like I love you—” he cringed, apparently unused to admitting it out loud. Harry held onto him tighter. “—I don’t care, I finally have you, all of you, to myself, I could never let this go, I’m fucking ruined. “I love you,” Draco repeated between feverish kisses. “I love you, I love you, of course I do, Harry, you bloody imbecile, I’ve always loved you.”

“It was worth it, every second of his life, if it brought him to this. Draco kissed him, and it was coming home, it was the inevitable rise and fall of water under the sun, it was the push of wildflowers growing unrestrained around his feet. It was leaping from a cliff and discovering that he could fly.”
“I’ll follow you anywhere, Draco.”

I honestly don't know where to begin! As the author said in the last chapter noted this was an emotional rollercoaster and I loved all of it!

Tropes:
– Draco/Harry fanfiction
– Established relationship (kinda)
– Romantic suspense

OMG HOW WAS THIS EVEN BETTER!! Even though the plot was a bit loose and meh, the relationship development was AMAZING!!!! I loved seeing Draco and Harry fight like a couple, do everything to keep each other safe, fuck like rabbits (I mean, phew), and be so unbelievably in love with one another the whole time. They were just so ride or die and it was EVERYTHING. I adored watching their relationship grow in the domestic aspect (but also elements of suspense) and Draco helping Harry realize that it's okay to want things–Draco–for himself, and it was okay to be selfish sometimes, and it was fine to want things. And the way Harry was like, pining?? Thinking "Draco doesn't love me the way I love him"??? SUCH A STUPID CHOSEN ONE HONESTLY. I frickin loved this to the moon and back and it was so good. This duet is a must read for Drarry lovers.

I much preferred this to book 1 in the series. I appreciated the character development and I loved the two of them together. I would reread this but not The Ordeal of Being Known in a heartbeat.

I thought I’d be even more excited for this book compared to the previous one because this book as A LOT of spice. I was prepared and went in feeling very very excited with high expectations. The story was as good as the first book, but I don’t know why it is I feel that the spicy scenes are actually too long and dragging the book down. I’m so shocked I’m saying this but I wished the spicy scenes were shorter. Other than that, absolutely perfect. The ending part when Harry got obliviated RUINED me. Yes it was for a while only but still, it pained me to see Draco in pain. *cries*
It really made me think how scary it would be to lose our memories. It’s practically like losing a person. Except the person is there, a walking reminder of what is lost. Makes me really feel for people who have loved ones suffering from amnesia, how difficult it is for them to cope.

I honestly don't know where to begin! As the author said in the last chapter noted this was an emotional rollercoaster and I loved all of it! From the little things that made each character special to the repetition - that honestly made me more emotional than I'd like to admit - this hit right where it should and made me ball my eyes out with happy and sad tears!
I feel absolutely empty and my heart is so full at the same time

Overall thoughts:
So many cute moments!! I thought I might be a bit bored since the couple is already together, even with the steamy bits, but this still had me hooked!
Everything is pretty much perfect.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Notes:
- HELL yeah Draco looking good enough to SHOCK AND AWE!
- Honestly, I'm just here for Draco learning that Muggles have been on the moon.
- Ok but I just love how Draco gets a slightly unnerving prophecy from a seven year-old and immediately appears in Harry's home, for the first time, uninvited.
- Draco got his ice cream!! I'm happy. I am satisfied.
- LMAOO Harry breaking the news of his new boyfriend to the Weasleys!! I'm dead. And George apparently having known all along and winning a bet against Fred was the cherry on top.
- This:
Harry’s eyes darted around the room, cataloguing the exits and potential threats. Draco knew, because he was doing the same thing. How nice, we have paranoias in common, what a lovely couple we make, he thought dryly.

- I don't know how I feel about Harry's patronus changing. In the first place, the stag is so significant and, like, just generally iconic? And in the second place, why would he have the exact same patronus as Draco? Shouldn't it have been, like, a dragon?
- WHEN ARE WE GONNA TALK ABOUT HARRY'S BOGGART. THE INCIDENT WAS BROUGHT UP TWICE AFTERWARDS AND THERE WAS NO MENTION OF WHAT HARRY SAW HIMSELF (although I could tell from the brief description during the incident). STILL, I WANT THEM TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT.
(5 seconds later) Ah, I see. Nevermind.
- The ARGUMENT. The INTENSITY. That was some good, proper Drarry shit right there.
- Lee's article, so fun XD
- Draco chattering drunkenly with the insane Aunt Walburga portrait was way too damn funny.
- The bath scene was actually really beautiful. I loved the conversation about Love.
- The Parseltongue scene was awesome in so many ways.
- I find it absurd how long it's taking them to say "I love you." It's just so obvious, like, WAY too obvious. They cannot both be so dense. Everything they do is so jam-packed with love it's practically sickening, but somehow they're not convinced the other is in love yet. After all the intense confessions they'd made. It doesn't even feel like "I love you" NEEDS to be said because they've already said it in so many different ways! But the narrative keeps pointing towards this inevitable, significant moment where it will happen. Sheesh.
- Saviour pants, lmao
Honestly, the entire scene with everyone at the Ministry was brilliant. Harry making Narcissa and Andromeda laugh with his Saviour intensity, Draco visibly being affected by seeing Harry so close with his mother, Draco and Narcissa being confused by laptops and the internet, Timsy and his legendary coffee, Harry and Draco being all shy but lovey dovey, Draco doing some seriously awesome Occlumency.
- Tbh, I wish Pansy wasn't also invited to Draco's first brunch with the Weasleys. I just think it would be funnier for him to be facing completely alone and to be the odd one out, garnering everyone's attention.
- Ok so immediately I thought: "Wait... Pansy and George???" And then a minute later: "Wait... Ginny??!" And then decided that I want to see a full sibling battle over Pansy while the bad bitch herself watches on in bisexual glee.
- Charlie Weasley just...flirting at Draco?? In front of everyone???! What on earth...
- Ooooh, interesting Patronus explanation!! I like this quite a bit.
- Genuinely impressive how well the songs match up. I have gotten quite a few good recommendations while we're at it.
- Nahhh the my blood ran cold at the Obliviate.
... And then it somehow becomes the cutest thing ever?? Bless.
- One of Draco's birthday demands being Harry take off his shirt while doing work LMAO. We stan a shameless king.

"You'd better not think I'm easy, or something, Potter.”
"Wouldn't dream of it. I think I'd know better than anyone how difficult you are."

🪴✨👣🦉🍃🫧🦌🌿☕️🎼📼

And just like that, it’s over. The sequel to the beautiful and compelling story set 8 years after the battle of Hogwarts, a story that i firmly believe is canon because there’s no way these characters, and the words & love they shared, didn’t happen in the HP universe. Forget the “19 years later” epilogue. THIS is my epilogue.

“I love you.”
“I know.”
“I loved you before that.”
“I know.”

At its core, this book is a love letter to romance. Harry learning to let go of his hero complex, his need to save others and risk his life, letting Draco stand with him, not behind him, was so so tender. Learning each other’s love languages, mapping the skin on each other’s bodies. Draco taking care of harry after his visit to Azkaban, stripping him bare, washing his grimy hair in a bathtub. Harry’s Patronus changing to a nightingale because of course his former rival’s happiness is his own happiness now, too.

Harry realizing the depth of Draco’s love, the years of hatred morphing into longing, ache, and lust. The heartbreaking plot twist of Harry forgetting everything that has happened the past few months, how irrevocably his life has changed for the better, now that he is an almost-Malfoy.

I simply have no words. I loved it. Also, it was a hilarious book lol. Just another reason to adore the story.

”You’ve really never traveled anywhere, just to get away?”
“Really,” Harry said, a bit exasperated, then paused, “Does being on the run count?”

😭😭😭 No Harry you idiot Scarhead, it does not count.

More of my favorite quotes:

”I’m yours, Draco, I don’t know how, but it’s always been you.”

”I’m yours, Harry. However you’ll have me.”

*~~**~~*

“If he'd known this feeling, before, would he still have been able to do what needed to be done, and walk calmly to his death?

No, Death would have to fight him for it, drag him away kicking and screaming. He would never be able to give this up, if this was love. To hell with the greater good.”

*~~**~~*

“Draco had needled Harry like that for years, thrilled by the visceral reactions he could cause, the attention and rage he could draw from him. It was annoy, taunt, spit venom until something stuck and Harry would stiffen. He was fire, and Draco would poke and prod the burning embers, stoking the flames until Harry snapped. It was exhilarating. It was like tickling a sleeping dragon.”

*~~**~~*

“It was worth it, every second of his life, if it brought him to this.
Draco kissed him, and it was coming home, it was the inevitable rise and fall of water under the sun. It was leaping from a cliff and discovering that he could fly.”

I loved The Ordeal of Being Known so much that when I realised (after binge reading it ALL day on a day off) that it had a sequel I obviously downloaded it immediately. It did not disappoint. I was so happy I got to continue on with this Harry and Draco. I continually loved their changing relationship, interactions with each others friends/family, and the mystery that carried in from book 1.
I was pleased that their relationship still had hurdles, and that they fought, and Harry was an idiot because he was terrified of being loved, and Draco was nervous, and angry, and also terrified. It all felt, once again, so true and expected from their characters.
For a while there I thought it was going to have a tragic ending so I was glad it all worked out.
Overall this was one of the sweetest, most satisfying fics I've read of these characters and I will be making bound hardcovers to adorn my shelves so I can flip through them whenever I want to.

FANTASTIC!!! The first book was really, really good. But somehow this one blows it out of the water. Sometimes established relationship (although in this case, barely) can get boring and repetitive if the author isn’t careful. The relationship between Harry and Draco is evolving and growing, so while you get domestic, cute moments, you’re also seeing their relationship settle in real time. The plot continues to thicken as well, since Draco’s dad has SERIOUS issues! Everything was plausible and felt compelling.
Now that scene. Sweet Neptune.
I can’t even begin to describe how the pacing made the scene that much more intense and heartbreaking. You know how they end up so you’re not as devastated, but just enough to realize the gravity of the situation and how much they love each other. One of the best scenes I’ve had the pleasure of reading.
A fantastic sequel to an already amazing work in the fandom.

Literally amazing. This was so fucking good I can't even. It was well written, made me laugh, cackle, tear up, kick my feet, frantically message my friend and want to kill the author (in a good way). I would 100% recommend this. Only gave thing I could critique on was the ending. I felt it was slightly rushed and I would've like to know more about the grand Master guy. Other wise a 10/10 read!

such a great wrap up to the first book. glad i decided to continue reading the series. we got to see so much more of draco and harry’s relationship. so many beautiful, touching moments. only reason it didn’t make it to 5 stars for me is the insane amount of smut. bit much for my taste. otherwise, amazing.
