George Orwell foi um dos escritores mais célebres do século XX. Tornou-se famoso graças a obras como O Triunfo dos Porcos ou 1984 (que escreveu em 1948) onde antecipa, há mais de 70 anos com o seu profético Big Brother, o controlo dos media, a Internet e a manipulação dos dados pessoais.

Mas a vida de George Orwell é tão apaixonante quanto os seus livros: é a vida de um homem sempre à frente do seu tempo, que estudou em Etron, que foi polícia na Birmânia, jornalista, anti estalinista e que combateu na Guerra Civil Espanhola ao lado das milícias do POUM.

É esta vida fora do comum que Pierre Christin (argumentista, entre outras, da mítica série Valérian), e Sébastien Verdier revisitam, dando-nos a conhecer os aspectos mais relevantes da vida do escritor e a forma como estes influenciaram a sua obra literária.

Inicialmente publicada em 2019, Orwell, a biografia desenhada que a Ala dos Livros agora apresenta, é uma obra prodigiosa que conta com autores convidados como Guarnido, Butch, Manu Larcenet ou Enki Bilal.

Αν κάποιος αγαπά τα Graphic novel τότε θα αγαπήσει κι αυτό. Ένα βιβλίο που μιλά για τη ζωή του Όργουελ ή πιο σωστά του Έρικ Μπλερ, όπως ήταν το πραγματικό του όνομα. Τι φοβερός τύπος! Τι έχει ζήσει αυτός ο άνθρωπος! Κι όχι από ατυχία, το επιδίωξε. Ήθελε να βιώσει τη φτώχεια, τον πόλεμο, την επανάσταση μέχρι το μεδούλι του για να μπορέσει να τα στοχαστεί και να τα αφηγηθεί.
Υπέροχες ασπρόμαυρες εικόνες, ενώ κάποια λίγα χρώματα παρεμβάλλονται για να τονίσουν αντικείμενα και στιγμές.
Όλα τα κείμενα με χαρακτήρες παλιάς γραφομηχανής είναι του ίδιου του Όργουελ.

Tengo que reconocer que siento una absoluta debilidad por las biografías en formato cómic. Cuando están bien hechas, me parecen una de las formas más accesibles y agradables de profundizar en la figura de un personaje que te interesa. El año pasado leí, a la vejez, ‘Rebelión en la granja’ y me dejó con ganas de saber más sobre George Orwell. Por esas fechas se publicó en España está biografía francesa y supe que acabaría cayendo.

Y la verdad es que me ha encantado. Cuenta la historia del autor de una forma tradicional y lineal: empieza con su nacimiento y acaba con su muerte. Y no necesita mayores florituras ni piruetas porque lo intrincado, lo mágico, lo (casi) inverosímil está en la propia historia. Este cómic es tan fascinante con la vida del propio Orwell, y nos lleva de viaje por el siglo XX, sus acontecimientos, su lucha de clases, sus conflictos y sus inverosímiles consecuencias. La historia aquí narrada (destacando la participación del autor en la guerra civil española y su labor en el Londres asolado por las bombas nazis) en es una de esas vidas tan únicas y grandiosas que casi te hace sentir acomplejado por la pequeña comodidad desvaída y gris de la tuya propia.

La narración fluye muy ligera y las ilustraciones son absolutamente fascinantes. Las páginas en blanco y negro se salpican con algunos detalles a color (una bandera, un bogavante, unas flores) siempre llenos de significado, y estas páginas se combinan con otras a pleno color. En la narración también hay alguna fotografía del protagonista y alguna imagen de documentos originales. Además, en una tipografía distinta, el libro está lleno de párrafos escritos por el propio Orwell y extraídos de su obra. Es, en suma, un documento interesantísimo y con gran valor literario, artístico y divulgativo.

George Orwell was born Eric Blair in Bengal, where his father worked for the colonial government. As a boy, he loved science fiction and knew that he would become a writer. He had an unhappy time at prep school, where he was on reduced fees, and proceeded to Eton and then police training in Burma. Already he felt that “imperialism was an evil thing.” Among this book’s black-and-white panes, the splashes of colour – blood, a British flag – stand out, and guest artists contribute a two-page colour spread each, illustrating scenes from Orwell’s major works. His pen name commemorates a local river and England’s patron saint, marking his preoccupation with the essence of Englishness: something deeper than his hated militarism and capitalism. Even when he tried to ‘go native’ for embedded journalism (Down and Out in Paris and London and The Road to Wigan Pier), his accent marked him out as posh. He was opinionated and set out “rules” for clear writing and the proper making of tea.

The book’s settings range from Spain, where Orwell went to fight in the Civil War, via a bomb shelter in London’s Underground, to the island of Jura, where he retired after the war. I particularly loved the Scottish scenery. I also appreciated the notes on where his life story entered into his fiction (especially in A Clergyman’s Daughter and Keep the Aspidistra Flying). During World War II he joined the Home Guard and contributed to BBC broadcasting alongside T.S. Eliot. He had married Eileen, adopted a baby boy, and set up a smallholding. Even when hospitalized for tuberculosis, he wouldn’t stop typing (or smoking).

Christin creates just enough scenes to give a sense of the sweep of Orwell’s life, and incorporates plenty of the author’s own words in a typewriter font. He recognizes all the many aspects, sometimes contradictory, of his subject’s life. And in an afterword, he makes a strong case for Orwell’s ideas being more important now than ever before. My knowledge of Orwell’s oeuvre, apart from the ones everyone has read – Animal Farm and 1984 – is limited; luckily, this is suited not just to Orwell fans but to devotees of life stories of any kind.

210708: once again i do not know if i should rate this five as it is read in French. but artwork is clean, clear, representational, and i have no trouble following narrative, though this might be some familiarity with his biography. it has been years (decades...) since read first Animal Farm and 1984, the latter first when i was about fifteen in an old hardback downstairs. this alertness me to the political in all language, and affects my skeptical appraisal of received knowledge wherever it is from...

not really know from where i know most of his life, for i do not recall well enough to rate any of his other texts, though i must have read of him, short pieces by him. seem to recall some of his critical work on Politics and the English Language etc, then some anglo-centric pieces on the details of the home country threatened by creeping americanism, but i do not imagine him a little Englander or brexiter or similar prejudicial sort. this work is from the French point of view, so that is interesting, and he is characterised at one point as an 'anarchiste torie'. not a mindless joiner, he already saw the threats of hitler and Staline before the Spanish civil war...

notes in the section 'after Orwell' are excellent reminder we are not free of those who would manipulate our understanding of the world, not here, not in the usa, not in France or England...

Un cómic muy atractivo por fuera y por dentro, con ese pulcro dibujo en blanco y negro de Sébastien Verdier y los contrapuntos aportados por otros dibujantes. Dada lo movidita que fue la vida de George Orwell, por fuerza tiene que simplificar y condensar las peripecias. Al menos intenta transmitir sus ideas con sus contradicciones y complejidad, y para ello principalmente cita sus escritos, destacados con una tipografía distinta. Está bien como obra introductoria, pero está claro que quien tenga realmente interés en Orwell mejor hará en dirigirse a su obra, a sus escritos autobiográficos y sus diarios. Y quien quiera conocer su vida más allá de este retrato demasiado planteado desde la simpatía por el personaje, que vaya a las varias biografías que se han escrito sobre él (o sobre su mujer, Eileen O'Shaughnessy, que también hay una escrita por Sylvia Topp, y en la que puede verse que Orwell, como cualquiera, tenía también sus cositas para echarlo de comer aparte).

Orwell is one of my all-time favourite authors, so I was really eager to read this graphic novel about his life.

O professor, jornalista e escritor inglês Eric Arthur Blair viveu pouco. Ele nasceu em 1903, na Índia, onde seu pai era funcionário público do Império Britânico e faleceu em Londres em 1950 com apenas 47 anos em função de complicações provocadas por uma tuberculose mal curada. Eric Arthur Blair é sem dúvida um ilustre desconhecido para você que está lendo este texto mas, tenho convicção de que, caso você tenha um mínimo de proximidade com o mundo da literatura você reconhecerá de imediato a alcunha com a qual Eric Arthur Blair se consagrou e imortalizou: George Orwell.
Orwell é autor de dois livros icônicos, lidos, debatidos, republicados e transpostos para outras mídias com sucesso: “The animal farm” (aqui no Brasil publicado com o nome “A revolução dos bichos”) de 1945 em que o autor elabora uma fábula alegórica sobre os caminhos e descaminhos da Revolução Russa e “1984” ambientado num futuro distópico em que a liberdade individual morreu frente à ascensão de um totalitarismo personificado no “Grande Irmão” (Big Brother no original, expressão tristemente popularizada nos dias atuais por razões alheias à literatura e que não vale a pena comentar aqui.)

Para suprir essa lacuna a sempre excelente Editora Darkside publicou esse sensacional “1903: Orwell”, quadrinização impecável, num belíssimo black&white, baseada na vida de George Orwell. Roteirizada pelo jornalista, tradutor e escritor francês Pierre Christin, nascido em 1938 e pelo “quadrinista”, também francês, Sebastien Verdier, nascido em 1972, a graphic novel narra a vida de Orwell desde o momento em ele era “apenas” Eric Arthur Blair. É muito interessante tomar conhecimento da formação de Orwell num colégio da elite inglesa ao mesmo tempo em que ele começa a desprezar o elitismo e o esnobismo de seus colegas e da elite britânica. Igualmente esclarecedor é ver como nasceu o seu horror ao colonialismo e ao imperialismo e seu esforço, já como jornalista, de entender a natureza da pobreza e como viviam os pobres, esforço esse que o levou a viver como mendigo e como trabalhador temporário para poder escrever com correção acerca das classes desfavorecidas. Outro ponto de destaque é a sua aversão às ditaduras de qualquer natureza e a sua desilusão em relação ao socialismo, temas centrais de suas duas obras referenciais.

"Orwell" je strip koji je samo donekle biografija pisca kojeg se danas više citira, nego što ga se čita. U masovnoj se kulturi za čitanje nema vremena pa stoga "neznanje je moć" odzvanja glasnije nego ikad. Razočaranje u velike ideologije tridesetih, koje se samo nadogradilo na uvjerenje proizašlo iz razgradnje mitova imperijalističkog prethnodnog stoljeća, oblikovalo je Orwellovo pisanje. Predviđanja najpoznatijeg pisca političkog SF-a ostvarila su se malo drugačije nego što je on to planirao. U vremenu nekritičkog razmišljanja, teoretičara zavjere i fake-newsa netko poput Orwella je potreban da s jedne strane bude glas razuma, a s druge da pokaže kako između njih i establishmenta koji toliko mrze i nema neke razlike.

Strip mi na kraju ostavlja dojam neiskorištenog potencijala. Imam dojam da se moglo puno više postići upravo u segmentu toga što je čovjek Orwell u odnosu na pisca Orwella bio, ali i što njegove riječi znače danas, kad ustvari živimo u kakafoniji ideja, od kojih su oni koji ih prezentiraju uvjereni da su jedine ispravne. Nesvjesni, naravno, pritom koliko je mali korak od toga do diktature. Strip je svakako aktualan, iako se što više ide prema kraju, čini pomalo nedovršenim i zbrzanim. Ipak, treba ga pročitati. Ako ni zbog čega drugog onda zbog vremena u kojem živimo.

Biografía en formato cómic que nos muestra de un modo lineal la vida de Eric Blair, más conocido como George Orwell, desde su nacimiento hasta su muerte.
A través de las vivencias de Orwell nos adentramos en paisajes y escenarios de la primera mitad del siglo XX tan dispares como la colonización de la India por el Imperio Británico, la Guerra Civil española donde luchó junto a las filas del POUM contra los fascistas, su depeccion con el bloque soviético, los bombardeos de Londres durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial...sin olvidar su vida más personal y su vida como escritor para la cual le fueron muy valiosas todas sus experiencias vividas y que se ven plasmadas en su obra.

La narración mezcla partes escritas por los autores con otras narradas directamente por Orwell con el detalle de estar estás últimas diferenciadas con letra mecanografiada. Aunque el cómic está ilustrado en blanco y negro en su mayor parte, también podemos encontrar en algunas ilustraciones toques de color, diferenciando así detalles muy importantes en su vida.

Un cómic muy interesante para quien desee iniciarse en la vida de este autor.

Beživotna biografija zanimljivog života. Nepotrebna naracija i dijalozi puni ekspozicije (zar je potrebno oboje?), na drugim mjestima zbrzana i konfuzna radnja. Npr. Orwellova supruga samo nestane iz priče, da bi se pred kraj usput spomenulo da je umrla od posljedica operacije (?) u istom kadru u kojem Orwell traži novu suprugu po salonima.

Osim pokojeg citata izvučenog izvan konteksta, Orwellov unutarnji život ostaje potpuno netaknut. Možda je to posljedica apsolutno nezanimljivog crteža, ali čini se da je Orwell sposoban za dvije emocije: frustraciju zbog neobjavljivanja i kašljanje. Siguran sam da se o toliko društveno i politički angažiranom čovjeku moglo štošta pametnije reći.

Wonderful story, richly illustrated. I loved reading about the origin of George Orwell (not his real name). He went through a lot before he wrote those books we admired, read and re-read. He lived through some tough times, but kept reading, writing, and surviving. He left us all with plenty of food for thought, although, in true Orwellian fashion, people distort his words to serve their own cause, be it right or left. That's sad, but the works remain, and intelligent people can still learn from them.

Mniemam, że znacząca większość z nas jeśli nie czytała żadnej książki George'a Orwella, to przynajmniej słyszała o jego twórczości. Jeszcze w liceum poznałam "Folwark zwierzęcy", a od dawna planuję przybrać się w końcu do "Roku 1984" - powieści najbardziej kojarzącej się z pisarzem. Niewiele wiedziałam o samej historii Orwella, dlatego z przyjemnością zabrałam się za komiks przybliżający sylwetkę tego człowieka.

George Orwell, a właściwie Eric Blair, nie miał najłatwiejszego życia. Po ukończeniu prywatnej szkoły, do której wysłano go bez jego aprobaty, tułał się po różnych miejscach, próbując znaleźć pomysł na siebie. Ten człowiek był świetnym obserwatorem, co widać w jego twórczości, ukazującej ogrom przywar ludzkich.

Komiks pod względem wizualnym jest majstersztykiem. Formy przedstawienia owej historii przeplatają się ze sobą, jednocześnie tworząc spójną całość. Czarno-białe ilustracje przeplatają się z kolorowymi, a typowa kompozycja komiksu łączy się chociażby z fragmentami twórczości Orwella. Cieszę się, że tekstu jest dość dużo, więc miałam co czytać, a i niekiedy zastanowić się nad pewnymi ważniejszymi kwestiami, których tu nie brakuje.

Powieści graficzne nie są czymś, po co sięgam najczęściej, jeśli jednak wszystkie wyglądałyby tak jak "Orwell", to myślę, że robiłabym to dużo częściej. Gdybym miała przyczepić się do czegoś, to chyba byłoby to niepotrzebne pominięcie niektórych wątków (a przynajmniej zbyt szybkie przejście do kolejnych) przy jednoczesnym skupieniu się na innych, nieco mniej interesujących i potrzebnych (w moim mniemaniu). Wolałabym przeczytać nieco więcej o Orwellu jako twórcy niż policjancie, zabrakło mi również większej dawki jego życia prywatnego. Niemniej nadal uważam, że jest to lektura godna poznania, a na pewno zachęcająca do sięgnięcia po twórczość pisarza.

Nedendir bilinmez ilk sayfalarda Doğan Kardeş dergilerinde tefrika halinde yayınlanan uyarlamaların verdiği heyecanı hissettim. Herhalde çizim ve dil bu çağrışımı yaptırdı. Fakat bu his kalıcı olmadı.

Orwell’in ilginç, maceralı bir hayatı var. Bunu en popüler distopik romanları dışındaki eserlerine aşina olanlar biliyor. O maceralı hayattan, gördüğü olay ve coğrafyalardan beslenmiş hep. Katalonya’ya Selam, Burma Günleri, Paris ve Londra’da Beş Parasız gibi kitaplarını bilmeyenlere şaşırtıcı gelecektir.

Yukarıdaki kitapları da elimdeki bu biyografiyi de daha iyi sindirmek için batı Avrupa yakın tarihine ve başta sosyalizm ideolojilere hakimiyet gerekli. Bu konularda eksiklik okumayı güçleştirebiliyor.

Çizimler çok güzel. Orwell eserlerine atıflar da öyle. Ana çizer dışında ufak dokunuşlar nispetinde de olsa Juanjo Guarnido, Enki Bilal, Manu Larcenet, Blutch, André Juillard gibi isimlere misafir olarak yer verilmiş. İşi zenginleştirmiş, tadı damağımda kaldı diyebilirim. Büyük boy baskı güzel olmuş. Aksi okumayı güçleştirebilirdi. YKY ciltli bassa da yakışırmış.

Orwell ha pasado a la historia de la literatura como un autor capaz de captar la impronta de una realidad compleja y retorcida. Ya fuese con su experiencia en la Guerra Civil Española, su decepción con el bloque soviético, su aversión hacia el fascismo o lo contradictorio de la sociedad inglesa, Orwell está detrás de obras tan importantes como Rebelión en la granja o 1984.

Christin y Verdier realizan este cómic a modo de biografía de Orwell que, desgraciadamente, se hace inconexo y presuroso, aunque ilustra bien la vida y obra del escritor que nos advirtió del mañana y del presente. En el apartado gráfico, además, se cuenta con numerosas colaboraciones que dejan imágenes fantásticas sobre la obra del escritor que nos advirtió del Gran Hermano. Un cómic recomendable para aquellos que quieran iniciarse en la vida del autor

Ganz gut gelungene Biographie, aber nicht ganz so geil wie erhofft. Viele interessante Sachen wurden ausgelassen, dafür wurden andere - für mich eher langweilige - verwendet.
Die Texte waren sehr gut geschrieben, die Bilder haben auch super funktioniert. Die Stilbrüche wiederum mal so, mal so.

Der letzte Satz über ihn trifft meine Erfahrung mit Orwell ganz gut: "an der Oberfläche klar und transparent, in der Tiefe aber trüb und beunruhigend."
Ich mochte ihn erst nicht, weil es beim ersten lesen flach wirkt, aber die Achtung vor seinen Texten wächst, je mehr man von ihm (oder über ihn) liest. Crazy Typ.

Świetnie narysowana laurka dla Orwella, przypominająca trochę "Berlin" - Lutesa, choć oczywiście tam był wielki rozmach i bohater zbiorowy, a tu rzecz skupiona wokół biografii pisarza, ale z silnie zarysowanym tłem charakteryzującym epokę. Bardzo dobrze rozłożone proporcje między tekstem, a rysunkiem (pokusa "przegadania" w tego typu powieściach graficznych niestety często wygrywa), no i wartość poznawcza spora. Poleca się

Orwell’ın hayatına çizgilerle kısa bir bakış. Fazla detaya girmeden ilerleyen kısa bir biyografi. Tarihte çok az yazarın yapabildiği, hem solcuları hem sağcıları sinirlendiren, sinirli yazarın, maceralı yaşamı. Her iki kesimin en ucuna kadar gidebilmeyi başarmış biri Orwell. Aynı zamanda her ikisinin de ne kadar anlamsız ne kadar sahte olduğunu görebilmiş. Bu konuyu kitaplarında enfes bir biçimde anlatabilen Orwell, sanıyorum tarihin gördüğü en cesur yazarlardan biri.

One of the best graphic biographies I own. Not only because it's a visually stunning book, but also because apart from comic strips there are real photos, quotes from Orwell's work, quotes from his essays and diaries, thoughts. This make this book a must-have for any person who's even slightly interested in Orwell's personality.

4 stars only because it's too thin, I wanted more :D

GENIAAAAAAAAL..... Ne passez pas à côté !!!!!

Tout le monde a entendu parler des romans d'Orwell ( 1984, la ferme des animaux etc..; etc !!!!)
MAIS... qui connait vraiment l'homme ?
Voici une BD qui va vous permettre de pallier cette lacune;

Homme en avance sur son temps et aux multiples vies.
D'étudiant à Eton au flic Birman , en passant par la guerre d'Espagne, voici la vie passionnante de ce journaliste aventurier.
Voici le portrait d'un homme libre comme on voudrait en voir plus souvent.

On aurait presque envie de relire toute l'oeuvre du bonhomme !!!

Novela gráfica (o cómic como se ha dicho toda la vida) de la biografía del autor de uno de los libros que más me ha marcado, 1984. Orwell tiene una vida que bien podría haber sido una novela en sí misma y este libro es una manera amena de acercarse a conocer un poco más a la persona detrás del personaje y comprender algo mejor de dónde viene su obra. Las ilustraciones son de mucha calidad. Recomendable.

Orwells Lebensstationen werden brav abgehandelt, aber über Orwells Charakter oder Innenleben erfährt man nichts. Zeichnerisch okay, jedoch nichts Besonderes: Thematisch wiederholen sich die Zeichnungen sehr, Orwells Gesichtsausdruck bleibt immer gleich.

Mi primer contacto con la novela gráfica. Me ha gustado. Aunque creo que ayuda que sea una biografía de uno de mis autores favoritos. Una vida que bien podría pasar por una de sus novelas. Muy atractivo a la vista.
