Lane Marlow has been on the run for decades. Condemned for feeding off his own kind, he escaped Valentino, King of the Vampires. As rumors circulate about how such a young vampire escaped, Valentino orders him killed on sight. Lane manages to elude or kill all those who came after him before disappearing.
But now, Lane longs for the home he had been forced to abandon. As he starts to make his way back to Ireland, he is discovered in Rome. Realizing that his quarry is still very much alive, Valentino sends two of his Council members to lead the hunt.
As Lane battles those sent after him, he stumbles across a group of vampires who are different than any he’s ever dealt with. They don’t attack him. They don’t run from him. And they live with humans. But are they unexpected allies, or just another obstacle to getting home?
Trigger warning : May have scenes of violence too intense for some readers.
Theresa Van Spankeren lives in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois with her husband. She has been writing since an early age, and came up with the idea for the War of Destiny series in high school. She is also an avid reader of multiple genres. When she isn’t reading or writing, she enjoys hiking and swimming. She is an fan of the Legend of Zelda series. She also loves checking out local haunted places.
4.5 stars. Theresa Van Spankeren is one of the handful of horror colleagues that I admire, not just for her professionalism, but her consistent writing abilities, too. I liked how this retold parts of the previous book, but from Lane’s perspective. It kept the plot points fresh and gave everything a nice energy, as the focus was not solely on Julia now. The book started right off and, although mostly serious, had a few moments that made me chuckle. Specifically the one snippet where Lane killed a few vampires and the hunters thanked him for making their jobs easier. But the entire book followed Lane as he navigated between his newfound alliance with Samuel, Kali, and Julia in their ka-tet, Valentino’s pursuit of him, the council, the human hunters, and other members of the resistance. Lots of good dynamics throughout, and some solid paced interactions between Lane and everyone else. My heart broke when I read how everything with Rory and Cailtin ended up, but it was fairly obvious from the start. Good emotional aspect for that part of the story. This also doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and is a really reasonable length, too. So I had a great experience here and look forward to seeing the fifth book in this series. My only critique was that I wished there was a little blurb in the beginning or something to recap everything up to this point, just bring me right back into the thick of things. It’s been about a year since I read the last book and I felt a little fuzzy on certain details. But otherwise, another solid outing with a very talented author.
The fourth book in the War of Destiny series takes a different approach by presenting some scenes from book three through Lane's perspective. Lane is a solitary vampire, hunted and despised by others in his kind because he has no qualms about feeding on and killing fellow vampires.
A chance meeting with Julia, the main protagonist of the series, leads him to reconsider his belief that all vampires would attack him on sight. Julia seems unaware of Lane's notorious reputation, which piques his curiosity. As he has further encounters with Julia and her travelling companions, his perceptions are challenged, compelling him to reevaluate his lifestyle.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Lane, exploring his backstory, and witnessing his character development. I sincerely hope he makes an appearance in future sequels.

Review:
👉 The title of the book is really so interesting to read. The cover is appealing and attractive .Writing style of the author is awesome.
👉Fallen Soul is the 4th book of War of Destiny series. This is a 212 pages short read. This book and series is a free ride to a world full of Vampires living closely with humans hidden protecting their race.
👉Path Marlow has been on the run for quite a long time. Censured for taking care of off his own sort, he got away from Valentino, King of the Vampires. As bits of hearsay circle about how a particularly youthful vampire got away, Valentino orders him killed without hesitation. Path figures out how to escape or kill every one of the individuals who came after him prior to vanishing.Be that as it may, presently, Lane aches for the home he had been compelled to desert. As he begins to advance back to Ireland, he is found in Rome. Understanding that his quarry is still especially alive, Valentino sends two of his Council individuals to lead the chase.
👉As Lane fights those sent after him, he coincidentally finds a gathering of vampires who are not quite the same as any he's always managed. They don't assault him. They don't run from him. Also, they live with people.

Theresa Van Spankeren is currently my favorite author. All the feels that I got from the whole series were indescribable! She always makes me feel like I’m in the story with the characters too. That makes it so much better. I will always buy & read her novels because I know that I’m always going to love them.
All the characters are just amazing but my favourite are Lane and Matthew. I really enjoyed Lane's story so much. The writing in this book is so powerful, this author is an expert at ripping my heart out in a book and then somehow she manages to mend it back together again. I like the story here and the characterisation. Well written, nicely paced and interesting. This book was phenomenal. I read it in one sitting. I couldn't put it down.
Every page was a joy to read, every sentence a puzzle piece that added more nuance, more detail, and more meaning, thus slowly expanding the setting, painting a picture that grew bigger and more vivid as the book progressed. It made reading super engaging. I don’t want to get into too much detail as part of the book’s charm for me was the layers of the story slowly unfolding itself within the atmosphere the excellent writing creates. This was a delightful and heart-wrenching twist on an amazing tale and I enjoyed every second of it, from the fleshed-out characters to the awesome plot twists.
Every once in a while, I get so engrossed in a story that I binge-read until the end, and this was one of those stories for me! I LOVED everything and anything that this author writes. You know when you come across a book and you don’t know what to say about it other than that you loved it and it was amazing?! Well thats how I feel about this book and the whole series. JUST READ IT! TRUST ME!
Yes, this volume was that good!!! My fellow readers, the way Theresa writes Urban Fantasy is the way I like it written for me - just enough action, mystery, tension, only a sprinkle of magic and some monsters.
This was a book that I couldn't put down. And when I had to put it down (dang it, work and family responsibilities!) I couldn't stop thinking about it. Those are both signs of a really good book. If you are a fan of the urban fantasy genre (or heck, just enjoy a good story) do yourself a favor and pick this series up.
At this point, I suspect I shouldn't be surprised that Theresa Van Spankeren continues to deliver a fun and high-octane story filled with purposeful world building and astute character development.
I would recommend it to anyone, since I believe all could find something to enjoy in it! I know I can't wait to jump into the next book by Theresa! Now I wish you all Happy Reading and may you always find what you Need in the pages of a Good Book!!!
"Fallen Soul," the fourth installment in the "War of Destiny" series by Theresa Van Spankeren, plunges readers into a world of darkness, danger, and redemption. Lane Marlow, a vampire condemned by his own kind, takes center stage as he navigates a treacherous journey back to his homeland while being relentlessly pursued by the formidable Valentino, King of the Vampires.
The novel opens with Lane, a figure both feared and shunned, haunted by his past and yearning for the home he was forced to leave behind. Van Spankeren expertly crafts Lane's character, infusing him with depth and complexity, as he grapples with his own nature and the consequences of his actions. Lane's struggle for acceptance and belonging resonates with readers, drawing them into his tumultuous world from the very first page.
As Lane embarks on his perilous quest, he encounters a group of vampires unlike any he has ever known. These vampires, who live among humans and eschew violence, challenge Lane's preconceptions and force him to confront his own beliefs. Van Spankeren skillfully explores themes of morality, identity, and redemption, weaving a gripping narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
One of the novel's greatest strengths lies in its vividly depicted settings. From the dark alleys of Rome to the misty shores of Ireland, Van Spankeren's prose brings each location to life, immersing readers in a richly atmospheric world teeming with danger and intrigue.
However, "Fallen Soul" is not without its flaws. The novel's intense scenes of violence may be distressing for some readers, and the pacing occasionally falters, slowing the momentum of an otherwise gripping story.
In conclusion, "Fallen Soul" is a captivating tale of survival, redemption, and the enduring power of hope. With its compelling characters, evocative settings, and thought-provoking themes, Theresa Van Spankeren's latest offering is sure to leave readers eagerly awaiting the next installment in the "War of Destiny" series.
This is book 4 in a series and I highly recommend reading them in order to fully understand the content. That said, if you did pick this one up as the start, you are reading it from Lane's point of view and it is a good one to choose. Again, I recommend reading the rest of the series first so you can be fully invested in the characters. This book draws you in and I love reading the perspective of other characters in the series. This book digs deep into Lane's past and shows why he is the way he is. I love being able to read about the background of a character and just feel so much. This book brought out feelings that I normally don't have when reading and I found myself almost sympathetic with the characters. It has to be hard always protecting yourself from everything and not ever letting anyone get close to you. The characters have their reasons for that and it makes sense. I just fell in love with the characters and it breaks me to see the struggle. This is all signs of an amazingly well written book. The author is able to pull on your heart strings while still keeping you engaged in the story line. This book flowed off the pages and kept me with my nose to the pages the whole time. It is a decently paced read, meaning it won't feel like dragging and it doesn't feel rushed. I did find myself wanting more after I finished it but that is because I'm greedy like that and feel a story is never over. Well, in my head it is never over. Then you add in the paranormal aspect of vampires. I haven't found a really good vampire series in a while and I am thoroughly enjoying this one. It has magic, action, and thrills. I highly recommend reading this series if you are looking for something different from your normal reads or love vampire books.
Fallen Soul (War of Destiny #4) by Theresa Van Spankeren
5 out of 5 stars
This is the first book in the series that I've read. It can be as a standalone, but might be better to read the first three books. I absolutely loved this book and I like how the author told you who was the narrator to the story. This is a definite must read.
Julia was taken aback when she met Lane. Not knowing who he was when she first ran into him she simply went on her way. Now that her and her group know who he is will they help him out? She finds out that he has a certain gift that others don't so she says: “Yes. Each of the undesignated has a unique gift. Sometimes several. The power the undesignated holds determines his or her importance in the grand scheme of things. The more power one holds, the more things they’re able to change. They can do great things or they can bring utter disaster. Your abilities are unique even for a vampire. This is because you had the power even as a human.”
Lane has been on the run for a long time. Thinking of his family never ends well. When he meets Julia his first thought was she looks like my wife. Now he's learning a little more about himself. He also feels that he can't seem to stay away from Julia's group. Overhearing a conversation leads him to ponder about what he heard: “Why would they say Julia is mad? Despite having been alone the first couple of times I saw her, she is obviously a part of a group. And she can speak coherently. It doesn’t make sense. Her group said they were Resistance, but I’ve never had members of a Resistance help me before? Why now? And why does that upset Valentino so much?”
🍷 Finally read the book four in the series and I'm so proud for actually starting and completing this series because it has to be one of my favourite of the year. The book four is way too different from the other books in the series. It's more sharp, more on point and way more thrilling. The book is a blend of fantasy with thrill and has unique vamp elements that adds up to the story so well. . . The book turned out more interesting than I thought it would. It's a quick read but its extremely bold and for sure it's meant for readers who like a darker base to their storyline and has the guts to follow up a strong narrative and vivid descriptions leading to unknown and dark destinations. The language is easy to moderate and might be twisted for new readers. The book isn't meant for people who are just looking for lighter themes, it's a full on package for curious readers who are ready to give in. . . I think it can be read alone but there will be confusions and I feel it's better if you start with the first book, eventually if you have read the book 3 then without a second thought just go for it. It won't disappoint you. It's such an amazing read that always left me wanting for me.
Note: It might be concentrated for sensitive readers.
Lane has pretty much been a loner since he was turned. He's been on the run for quite some time after ticking off the Vampire King Valentino. There are orders by the king to kill Lane on sight and many vampires believe him to be insane.
Lane is currently in Rome but is longing to go home to Ireland. However, many factors are preventing him from making the trip. One of those factors is a female vampire who does not shy away from him upon their first meeting. She and her group are unlike any other vampires that Lane has seen. This group pretty much violates every law that Valentino has set up. What a group of rebels!
Will Lane always be alone or has he found allies in Julia's group?
This is book four of a series and this one could technically be read as a stand alone. However, this series is one that every book should be read!! Lane is a character that doesn't come into play really until this book but other characters and their backgrounds are developed in previous books.
Some content may be too intense for younger readers so please bear this in mind when gifting or recommending for a younger reader.
Fallen soul War Of Destiny Book 4 By: Theresa Van Spankeren Review by: Susan Ratchford 4 Stars
Fallen Soul is another exciting and unpredictable installment in the War Of Destiny Series by Theresa Van Spankeren. This book grabs you from the first page and it’s almost impossible to put down! I really enjoy this series and Fallen Soul is the most action packed and suspenseful book yet! With wonderful new characters like Lane, I find him so cool and think his interactions with Julia and the rest of the Ka-Tet are really fun to read. He is also very relatable and the author's mesmerizing writing makes him so easy to root for! This book and series in general also makes you wonder if we all might have a destiny! I really hope there is more to this series! To experience all of Theresa Van Spankeren’s entrancing paranormal fantasy series, War Of Destiny, I would highly recommend starting with book one Lost Soul! You will not be disappointed! Wonderfully unique and refreshing read!
Finally, Lane’s story. STOP if you have not read the previous books please go back and do so first as this is book four in the series and to truly appreciate and get the full effect of this entry in the series a full picture to this point is needed. Lane has been alone, feared, wanted, and whispered about for decades. Now it’s his turn to have his story known. Lining up with some events in book three, this book fills in the missing pieces of who Lane is and why he is who he is. He escaped and while that should be a good thing it was anything but, the author perfectly captures the loneliness he has faced, the mental impact of which has led to his way of thinking and responding to what he faces while also giving us sparks of hope that a small act of kindness can light in someone. This world is easily one that you can escape from start to finish. I only realized it was dark outside when I finished and realized I was hungry. I cannot wait to see what Julia and Lane will face in the next book.
Thank you LBT for having me on this book review tour and for my gifted copy of this epub.
I absolutely love this series and this author I was so pumped to be back for this book.
I loved this read. I highly recommend reading all of these book cause they are totally worth it I love vampire books and this series is so good and the writing has only gotten better !!
In this book we follow Lane and his life and back story and how he is trying to navigate his alliance with Samuel and his crew how Valentino is hunting him the human hunters oh and we can’t forget the other members of the resistance. I mean his story is unique and so good. I really loved how this book unfolded.
I had so many emotions reading this book and I truly felt for Lane. I mean can you imagine going through life without allowing anyone to get close to you
I just love all these characters and the writing and everything about this book is amazing!!
Overall can we have more like now ?! I hope we get audio version. I love audio books!!
Fallen Soul (War of Destiny Book 4) by Theresa Van Spankeren is a a great vampire story.
For many years, Lane Marlow has been evading capture. He escaped Valentino, King of the Vampires, after being condemned for feeding on his own kind. As reports about how such a young vampire managed to escape spread, Valentino orders his immediate execution. Before disappearing, Lane is able to escape from or kill every pursuer. But now Lane misses the house he was compelled to leave. He is found in Rome as he begins to travel back to Ireland. Valentino orders two members of his Council to lead the hunt after realizing that his prey is still very much alive.Lane encounters a bunch of vampires that are unlike any he has ever faced as he fights those sent after him.
Every page was exciting and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen. It is a very unique story with even more one-of-a-kind characters. The story really transports you into their world. I couldn’t put the book down
Book Four ~ Fallen Soul Let me start by saying that this book is a little different than the rest of the War of Destiny Series, and is written from another character's point of view. This is a POV of the Third Installment, Between Darkness and Light. It has been decades since Lane Marlow was condemned and found himself on the run. The Vampire King Valentino has ordered for poor Lane to be killed on sight, which has made his life on the run even more difficult. He finds himself missing the home he was forced to flee, and begins to make his way back to Ireland, only to be found by his pursuers in Rome.. As Lane continues fighting for his life, he finids himself in the midst of a new group of vampires, ones that don't treat him like a deadly stigma, and ones that live side by side with humans. Will these new vampires be another obsticle for Lane to overcome, or will he find allies where he never expected?
Trigger warning: May have scenes of violence too intense for some readers. Fallen Soul is the fourth book in the unique and dark War of Destiny series. It is a paranormal, fantasy story with vampires. Who doesn’t love a good vampire story? It is as engaging as the other books. Lane tired and longs for the home he once had. He is trying to keep ahead of the Vampire King who wants his head. Danger is everywhere. But when he stumbles up something he has not seen before he is not sure if it is friend or foe. Theresa is a great storyteller and at weaving a wonderful tale. There is plenty of violence and action and the characters have depth and meaning. War of Destiny is a multi-layered and exciting series. With lots of intense danger, intrigue, imagination and twists and turns will keep you glued to the pages. Don't miss out on this epic series where the tension is ripe.
The very beginning the story drew me in. This book is such a turnaround, everything is so unexpecting! The author dedicate this whole book to Lane, as it's from his POV. I was left gaping throughout the whole book, hearing his thoughts and his side of story. I literally couldn’t put it down and from start to finish it was practically super glued to my fingers. I read it in one sitting! I was desperate to know Lane's story since he got so much hype (but he's worth the hype ahem) how lane was going to get himself out of his current situation the entire way and what's his destiny and all. This book gives us his entire story and how he feel about Julia and Kali. Samuel and his connection everything that the readers need to know. And there's a cliffhanger, I'm really curious to know what he'll do, whome he'll choose😭
Lane is a vampire that doesn't want to hurt humans. Doesn't that remind you of the Cullens? He has been caught feeding on his own kind and condemned to death. The King of Vampies, Valentino, has orders out to kill on sight. For years Lane has been able to either elude or kill those that are hunting him. Just when he feels like he can go back home to Ireland he is spotted in Rome. There he stumbles upon some vampires that live amongst humans. Even though they did not attack him, nor run away, he is unsure if they are trustworthy. Will he continue to be lucky in escaping or will he finally be caught? This has been a great series. I highly suggest starting the series from the beginning. I also highly suggest making sure you have more than 10 or 15 minutes to read because you won't want to put this down.
This is the fourth book in the War of Destiny series. Lane wishes for his home as he’s fleeing from the Vampire King. Will he find a way to survive and find his home again? I unfortunately did not read the previous books. However, I found myself getting pulled into this story mainly because of the great writing by the author. As you read, you can imagine the danger, adventure, violence, and so much more that Lane is feeling. It’s hard not to turn the page to see what happens next. I will be looking for the other books in this series. I’m sure I missed some aspects of the story and I would like to read about Lane’s prior experiences.
Unlike the previous books, which was from Julia’s perspective, Lane takes center stage in this book as he finds his own path of uncertainty as to which group he belongs to. In certain ways, this book kind of reminded of the Bree Tanner novella, in how her perspective was told by the author and struggles with identifying her group’s purpose or being guided by her own intuition. I’m quite a fan of alternate character perspectives as they give you insight into how characters are viewed differently and how interpretation of circumstances can be constructed quite differently than originally imagined.
This follows Lane who is a vampire on the run from Valentino the King of Vampires. He ran from Ireland almost a century ago and has been running ever since but now he wants to go home. As he's making his way back to Ireland he meets a group of Vampires who are different and have humans as part of their group. He has so many questions but doesn't know what to ask first. Does he trust them? Does he help them / let them help him? Does he make it back to Ireland? You HAVE to read this! I love Vampires and demons and creatures of the night and this did not disappoint! Loved it!
As this is book 4 in the series I will have to go back and read the other book to get a better understanding of all the characters. This book is Lane’s story a vampire that is feared by both vampires and humans. I love his unique abilities that no other vampire poses. “Now I am an outcast, feared and hated by humans and vampires alike. Apparently, no other vampire can hypnotize others of our kind, nor have I ever met a vampire who can hide their presence as well as I can. “ I really loved the book but would highly recommend reading the first 3 books in the series before you read this book.
4/5 ⭐️ “Some souls don’t have destinies. You’re one of them. You create your own,”
I feel Lane really did choose his own destiny. He chose to stay and fight. Theresa Van Spankeren does wonders writing Lane Marlow and his troubles. His journey of learning to trust others and his longing to have a family again was beautifully written. She paints the picture perfectly. If you love vampires with really neat powers, fight scenes, and you have a soft spot for loners then this book is for you.
It's fantastic! Literally, a dark fantasy with all the elements you live and want. Mystery, monsters, and mayhem. The author’s writing style is unique, and it continues in this book to grab you by the throat. Great character development, twisty not sure what's going to happen plot, and the delivery I have come to expect from this author. Great fantasy series!
Suspenseful fantasy This is the fourth book in the War of Destiny series. I really enjoyed this instalment. Lane is an intense and intriguing character. The storyline continues from the previous books with so many layers cleverly interwoven creating an amazing paranormal fantastical adventure. Highly recommend.
I really enjoy how this story continued. The characters are very well developed and the author’s style keeps you engaged. I really love the vampire genre and this one fits in but has a different enough feel to it. I liked that Lane got his own book for his perspective. I appreciate books like that told from a different point of view. I am intrigued for what happens next.
Another great book by an amazing author. Perfect way to continue the series. I was hooked again by the characters and the plot of the book. This book was an entertaining read. The author knows how to make you want more and more with each turn of the page. I highly recommend this book.
