Nick is just an ordinary unemployed guy, down on his luck, and worried about making his rent payment. Then he gets a massive stroke of luck: a job offer at last, and it includes free rent, utilities, and wifi.

There’s just one catch.

Vladimir, Nick’s landlord and prospective employer, wants more from an employee than an able-bodied person knowledgeable about plumbing, electrical, and general home repair.

It’s not much, really, in the grand scheme of things. Just Nick’s blood.

As it turns out, working for a vampire has other benefits beyond those detailed at the job interview and Nick finds he may lose something even more important than his vital bodily fluids.

His heart.

Cute vampire romance

This was a lot of fun and I liked the low angst nature of the whole relationship as Nick discovered he might just be Vampire-sexual.

An excellent 'sidekick' in Ivan and an interesting plotline involving literal Nazi vampires, made it an enjoyable read.

Audio: 5 stars I love Michael Ferraiuolo’s narrations!

Book: 3 stars

It was cute, but too much repetitive internal dialogue that got old. I got it, Nick was shocked that he had feelings to Vlad, since he was sure he was straight for his whole life… we read some form of that sentence A LOT! Haha even with that, it was a decent read, but not a memorable read.

I could see me rereading this for something short and sweet, but it’s not higher than a 3 star read.

While I've frequently enjoyed Lynn Van Dorn's works, I tend not to vibe with the stuff she writes under her Virgina Kelly pseud, and unfortunately this was no different. The dynamic here is just not at all what I'm looking for in a vampire romance, and I didn't quite feel like she hit the right balance.

Another winner from this author for me. I just really jive with her writing style, the sarcasm and wit, the snark and sass to her characters, I always know I'm going to be in for a good time when I read a book from this author.

Lynn/Virginia wrote a story about vampires - and one who shifts into a super adorable bat lol - and their human servants, and I absolutely loved it. Queer awakening, first times with a man, lots of fun in the shower and bath tub, a snarky other human servant, and some action and drama! Loved this so much.

It was a decent story. I don’t understand how them bad vampire was able to take control so easily. Supposedly mc friends were not super old like him but still old. The bad guy was younger than all three of them. but anyways I do felt like she was denying the mc sexuality, she focus a lot on that. I read it like 45 mutes that he was not into guys. Like okay I get it. I believe you. I think the author was trying to make it seem like he was finding his sexuality, but I didn’t feel that way. I felt like she was mostly insulting his sexuality. Also, there was like some side comments. I guess they’re meant to be like jokes and funny. They’re really aren’t funny, they felt kind of insulting.

I absolutely LOVE this cover! Most of the story was very good except for the typos/missing words. Some sentences made no sense and I had to read them several times. It was also interesting to read the word “illumindated”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Started out promising but was in desperate need of an editor. It read more like a rough draft until wandering aimlessly into what was apparently supposed to be the plot, which was introduced around the 60% mark. Had it's moments, but overall, this was a flop.

Frost Bite is about Nick a struggling human and Vladimir his vampire landlord. This was a fun story because of the humor. Virginia Kelly does a great job with the story. I enjoyed all the characters, especially Ivan. I hope we get more stories like this in the future from Virginia Kelly. I would definitely recommend this book.

Dima and Nick may have been thousands of years apart in age, but they were completely and utterly perfect for each other. I absolutely devoured their romance, and I thought their journey was a nice mix of world-building, suspense, and steaminess. Dima was such a fascinating vampire to me, the most powerful of his kind and yet the most uninterested in anything except his simple life in his basement. I enjoyed seeing him come out of his shell as he found things in the outside world to care about, and though that didn't change his personality it did force him to reconsider his priorities. On the romance front, Dima and Nick had an insanely swoony insta-lust connection that had me falling all over myself in my eagerness to see their connection grow. The two of them had such natural compatibility, and every moment they spent together only got better and better. The steaminess in this book was on point, and even though I'm super icked out by blood I found every aspect of their relationship dynamic enjoyable... even the orgasmic blood drinking. I would go as far as to say that their romance was free of internal angst--the only thing that stood in the way of them sailing smoothly into a happily ever after was the impending vampire council threat. That plotline started off deceptively slow, really picked up steam halfway through, and ended up being a huge climactic turning point for Dima and Nick's future. In a book where the romance was so easy, I really enjoyed having something else to keep me guessing, and while the ending was quite a bit bloodier than I expected, it made for a shockingly satisfying resolution. I also can't say enough good things about Ivan's presence as a grumpy old man in this book--I honestly wish I'd gotten more time with all the side characters because they were a ton of fun. At the end of the day, it was the strength of Nick and Dima's love for each other that propelled this story forward, and I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out for them.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Campy but cute

I love MM romances. I love low-angst romances. And I love vampire romances. But I'm not sure that I love low-angst MM Vampire romances. At least not this one.

My favorite part of the book was the chapter titles. Lol. Most books these days, especially dual POV, don't bother with chapter titles. I loved that this book had them. Especially because they were kind of silly.

This book was okay. It was a little cringe. Nazi vampires taking over Chicago? Really? The tone was a bit stilted as well. Vlad was very stilted. I understand he's a 9000-year-old vampire, so it kind of makes sense, but he barely had a personality. Nick had loads of personality. Some parts with LOL worthy but it was mostly campy.

I hate that we don't get closure regarding Nick's mom and sister. Like, he just goes on being mistreated? Not cool.

And the deal with the Council seats was open-ended. Does that mean a series or spinoff can be expected? Not that I'm likely to read it if the tone is similar to this book, but still, I'd like to know. If a book is a standalone then it should be 100% concluded and not leaving me with questions and no answers at the end.

This book is an insta-lust type romance. I have a love/hate relationship with insta-lust/love because there is a very fine line between it being swoon-worthy and just cheesy. I don't like when the reason for the insta-lust is "I'm not sure what it is about them but..." like, no. TELL. ME. WHY. YOU'RE. ALL. OF. A. SUDDEN. OBSESSED. Say, "it's the way his hair stays perfectly styled all the time" or "it's the depth in those dark blue eyes" or SOMETHING. I hate when authors use "I'm not sure what it is about them" as the reason. Feels like a cop-out.

So anyway, all that to say, this book was fine, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it and I definitely wouldn't reread it. Many, many grammatical errors as well.

Side note, spice is 3/5 🌶🌶🌶 I expected (and wanted) some blood play, because, hello, VAMPIRES. But alas, there was none. Matter of fact, it was all very endearing a respectable.

*review of new edition - March 28th 2024*
An enjoyable standalone from Virginia Kelly with probably one of the oldest characters I've read and a down on his luck human. Vladimir finds himself in need of new help as his current caretaker, Ivan, wants to finally retire and Nick is an obvious choice, already living in his apartment building and helping with the superintendent jobs anyway. Nick can't really turn this down as he currently has zero money, zero food and is unable to find a job but it comes with one hell of a shock - vampires are real.
This is quite a fast paced romance as Vladimir and Nick find themselves instantly drawn to each other, surprising for both as Vladimir hasn't felt this way in well over forty years and Nick has never been attracted to another man. I like that he takes it so easily and just goes with it, open to both being bisexual and that vampires exist. It's not without its drama though as Vladimir isn't the only vampire in town, as much as he'd like to think so, having not left his home for his own protection in so many years. Instead, it comes knocking at their door and draws him out with no choice if he wants to save those he loves and the rest of Chicago from the. worst of the worst.
I have to say, though, my favourite thing about this book is Ivan. He is hilarious in his attitude and things he says. They may have escaped Russia when he was just a small boy and then loved in France for a while but it's all Russian phrases and stilted English. It is clear, however, how much Vladimir means to him which makes him even more lovable. I was definitely not a fan of Nick's mother and sister! Felt a little bit like bullying or gaslighting which always made him feel bad about himself.
An enjoyable story to read that has a good story that develops more over time.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I liked the first half - Nick is cool about being attracted to a man (although he mentions it a lot,) refreshingly unafraid of Dima the vampire, and sometimes really funny:
I stop myself from telling the mighty vampire here that he looks like an irritated kitten, but it’s a near fucking thing. He’s so dang cute. And pretty. And sexy, too, if you’re into that kind of thing, which I guess I am.
But then the talk of nazi vampires start (no, seriously,) and Nick develops main character syndrome. The relationship is brand new, but he still rudely steamrolls Dima's friends and demands answers instead of letting the ancient beings talk among themselves. He then engages in risky behavior, even after a kidnapping attempt, and endangers both himself and Ivan. I don't like him anymore, and am DNFing.

This is a cute vampire romance. The vampire in this case does actually have fangs, drinks blood, is very ancient and can turn into a bat!
Dima is the epitome of grumpy powerful creature of the night and Nick is the ultimate sunshine he needed.
Their relationship is pretty low angst and adorable.
They make such a cute couple.
Nick goes through quite a bit of self discovery I this, it’s him that gets the character arc as he explores his sexuality and comes to grips with mythical creatures actually existing, let alone feeling attracted to one.
The bad guys being actual Nazi’s felt a little bit of an odd choice but it gave an action packed second half and I loved seeing Dima go full on battle mode.

Overall a very enjoyable read.

To my disapplointment, it seems that I have an 89 page, previous edition, instead of the much longer 265 page edition. Too bad the vendor did not provide an update. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this enough to want to waste any money buying the update. I didn’t like either of the MCs. Vladimir just felt out of place and time; especially for a vampire as old as he was. Nick was just annoying. I generally stay away from GFY stories because I think the whole concept is BullS. And having a character constantly reminding us that “I’m not gay, but…” just dials the sexy and the romance dials down to about zero. I also came across some inconsistencies in the storyline. Perhaps they were ironed out in the update. Oh well….

Frost Bite is a paranormal romance. Nick is human, he is struggling to pay rent an apartment but he is offer a job that would pay him plus free rent and other benefits, he just needs to give to his new employer his blood.
Vladimir is a very old vampire, he owns the building where Nick lives, Dima and Nick meet so they can discuss his new job, not just taking care of the general repairs but he needs to be able to give his blood to Dima. I like the connection they feel between them since the meet, they were meant to be together.
The book was a fun read, both Nick and Dima were great characters and the chemistry was of the charts! I enjoyed Dima and Nick’s story!

wasn’t sure

K, gotta admit I wasn’t sure at first with that first chapter, reads very stilted and uppity until you realize it’s Dima from way back and then it makes a lot of sense. And while I liked Dima, Nick made the book for me. Seemed like such a goofy, fun loving guy who just goes with the flow. Like “You’re a vampire, cool. You want to drink my blood, cool. I now have the hots for a guy, cool. This job is amazing, sign me up. “
I thought there was gonna be a bit more drama with the Nazi’s and vampire council so that kinda sucked cause it felt like it ended really quickly from when Nick was taken but overall really enjoyed it.

Good

The writing was good and there was a germ of a plot. That little germ of a plot was the only thing that kept me going on reading this book. In my opinion, and this is a personal preference, I wish the book was heavier on plot and lighter on the bedroom activities. Because having a little more on the plot could’ve been really interesting. The vampire politics could have been more developed and rounded out the book.

Again, this is a personal preference of mine that the plot be stronger. The writing was still very good which is why I rated the book the way I did.

Loved the story...until chapter 29 then it got ridiculous while I understand Nick is supposed to be portrayed as stupid I assume or below average in intelligence? His capture was ridiculous... And then the climax was completely missed. All that build up for him to take down the council and then bam it's over? And for an evil villain rant to even be in there makes no sense - he was never really in the damn story! Wtf? It was like being with your lover in bed then left wanting when they got off... Smh

I remember reading and enjoying this a few years ago as a short story in a collection. It has now been rewritten and expanded to novel length and it is gorgeous!!! Sweet and sexy and funny with an underlying seriousness when it comes to the relationships (romantic, friendship and family), in a way that I love from Virginia Kelly/Lynn Van Dorn. This has been re-released with relatively little fanfare, which is a shame because it is a bit of a gem.

This story follows financially struggling Nick, who helps with minor things around his building to earn some money. When he can’t pay this month’s rent, he gets a very unconventional proposal from his landlord.
I’m not sure how to rate this story.
The premises sounded great and I liked the idea of vampires having their own blood servants. But somehow I didn’t connect with the MCs and the story had no real flow. Everything went too fast, there was no real emotion behind anything - or at least I didn’t feel any. While reading I hoped for anything slightly captivating to happen, which didn’t. And then, when finally towards the end there was the chance of some showdown/action/angst, it was pretty anticlimactic and if you blink, you miss it.
This book had way more potential.
There were many typos, but I got an advanced copy and really hope the final version got some more editing and proofreading.

Nick and Vladimir were a great pair, a human who didn't know his worth, and a vampire trying to hide from the world. It was sweet that Nick couldn't see just how terrifying Dima was to others, and Dima's protective feelings for Nick were swoony. I loved how these two made each other better. I also thought that Ivan was one of the best supporting characters ever.
This story was bloody, violent, sexy, funny, and romantic. I enjoyed it immensely.

I honestly enjoy Lynn’s humor and sass so much.
We have Nick, a struggling human trying to make things happen for himself. He’s also very straight.
Enter Vladimir, his vampire landlord in need of a new “assistant”.
Nick discovers he’s very much into vampires, no matter their gender.
We have debilitating sexy times, sassy Russian servants, hot showers and baths, biting, crazy psycho vampires, cute white bats, and a little bit of chaos and romance.
Such a fun read!

Nick is in need of a job in order to make ends meets, Vladimir is in need of a donor as his is retiring. They are the solution to each other’s problems and when they meet they spark between them is instant.
By spending time together they bring out the best in each other but outside forces will have to be addressed in order for them to be together.

An engaging read full of banter, steam, two characters who complemented each other perfectly, fantastic supporting characters and a good HEA.

I like LVD a lot and this could have been a cute story, but the editing is nonexistent. This is way more than the average amount of mistakes that a book goes to print with. This truly felt like a first draft. An entire scene was actually repeated (in a slightly different way so you can tell it wasn’t just a copy/paste mistake). I’m honestly considering reporting a quality issue to Amazon. Ridiculous. Authors, you can’t skip the editing.

The book is quite different from the novella she put out about this couple a few years ago. In fact, only the beginning is the same. The rest is quite new and different. I liked the novella as well but it was like getting a totally new book with this one.

I generally have issues with this author and the editing of her books (which has been so shoddy the last couple of years), but this one actually had decent editing. It's the same editor she always uses, so I'm not sure what's up with that.

Nice quick read
I like how the characters clicked immediately, their connection was great.
The smut was on the lighter side but also very well written.
A little confusing in which POV it was written in as not completely clear but enough to grasp whose POV I was reading.
The ending was very quick, there wasn’t much to it and was over too quick for my liking as it was rushed.
Epilogue was sweet.
Loved Vladimir and Nick and even Ivan played a big part in this book so I liked him too.
