Detective Daniel “Boone” Buckam is more than burned out. After fourteen stellar years on the job, one bad judgment call—and, fine, a whole lot of cynicism—has forced him into a mandatory vacation. If he can get his head on straight, there’s a job as Police Chief waiting for him back in his Minneapolis suburb.
But then he meets Vivien.
Actress Vivien Calhoun isn’t really a drama queen. Sure, she gets swept up in the emotions of life—but please, she’s an actress. Or, um, was until a stalker made her flee the bright lights of Broadway. Now, she’s passionate about directing her local theater production. But when she accidentally ropes an uptight police detective on vacation into her cast, she can’t help but wonder if he might be the leading man she’s always longed for.
Of course, she’s in trouble.
Boone can’t help but like Vivien. He might even have a type—vivacious and bubbly, with a penchant for attracting danger. He can smell trouble even if she can’t, and is pretty sure her stalker has hunted her all the way to Deep Haven. He’ll have to stay by her side—even if it means being in her silly play—to keep her safe. But Vivien is more than he expected as she helps him discover a part of him he’s locked away…the part that said he could never love again.
So much for relaxing.
It’s summertime in Deep Haven, and the fun is heating up in this laugh-out-loud, charming story.
Award-winning author Rachel D. Russell writes contemporary inspirational romance focused on forgiveness, redemption, and grace. She's a country girl living in the suburbs, whose resume includes presenting live-animal reptile programs, being a park ranger, a reserve police officer, and a stint in federal prison (where she worked, not lived).
She makes wild attempts to balance writing under publisher deadlines with her full-time career with the federal government. When Rachel’s not cantering her horse down the Oregon beaches, she’s probably interrogating her husband on his own military and law enforcement experience to craft believable heroes in uniform. The rest of her time is spent enjoying her active family, including two college-age sons and three keyboard-hogging cats.
“I’ve learned you have to embrace the life you have, not the one you expected you’d have - or the one others expect you to have.”
I need more Daniel ‘Boone’ Buckham in my life!
My inner introvert may not have identified with Vivien Calhoun, but I sure enjoyed reading about Vivien and Boone together. They were a perfect match because they had similar experiences and could support each other.
Boone, a police officer, has come to Deep Haven on a 5-week decompression and is struggling to ‘just relax.’ When he accidentally enters Vivien’s life as a fake boyfriend, they end up saving each other.
I enjoyed the messages about accepting change, allowing grace to transform us, and realizing that who we are isn’t dictated by where we come from or what we do.
This is book 4 in the Deep Haven series and I’ve already queued book 5. I love Deep Haven and the residents.
Characters: At the beginning of this book, I half-questioned whether I could connect with Vivien. I mean, she did wear false eyelashes :) But she actually turned out to be a fun, understandable character. I also liked Boone. He had flaws that made him seem human, and he experienced a lot of character growth over the course of the novel.
Language: Clean.
Moral: One big theme in this book was grace.
Plot: Hints of suspense, romance, and character growth kept me flipping pages in this engaging novel.
Romance: Clean. Just a few kisses.
Writing: Rachel Russell's writing style worked great for this book. She described things well but didn't go overboard, and she gave the characters good voices.
Overall: Then Came You was an entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy Christian fiction, contemporary romance, and mild romantic suspense. I'm looking forward to reading the last two books in the series!
'Every Sunday morning, she sat in the same pew, singing the same hymns, wondering if she could ever trust God enough to let down her guard.'
Here we go back to Deep Haven again, that most wonderful small town in Minnesota created by Susan May Warren years ago and the setting for seven books by her. How I love that place and it's inhabitants. Now, she and Rachel D. Russell bring us book four in the new Deep Haven Collection. And it is a great offering, too!
Detective Boone Buckam comes to Deep Haven to relax-well, more like ordered to relax by his boss. If he wants a shot at the police chief job back in Kellogg, he has to learn some things. Like how to relax, control his anger and get his blood pressure down. But Boone didn't count on Vivien Calhoun, who nabs him his first day in town to help her get away from someone she doesn't want to see. From the moment he lays eyes on her, she has pulled him into her drama and Boone kinda likes it. She's just so irrepressible and precious. And...it seems as if she has a stalker. Boone can't turn off the detective in him, despite being in Deep Haven to relax, and is determined to discover who is tormenting Vivien.
'I've learned you have to embrace the life you have, not the one you expected you'd have--or the one others expected you to have.'
Boone has a lot of things to think about in this story and not just Vivien and his growing feelings for her. Will he let others' expectations of him determine the course of his life or is he willing to step out in faith for what HE wants to do with his life? Even if it shakes him to the core.
I loved every single minute of this story. Russell gives us a hero that is struggling with inner turmoil and wants desperately to do what's always been expected of him. But you know what? God just may have something else in mind for Boone. I loved Vivien, but to me, this is Boone's story front and center. Russell has crafted a great hero and I just loved him and his heart. This is my favorite of the Deep Haven Collection so far. And it was so great to be back there and see old friends again. There are a few fictional places I'd love to visit or live and Deep Haven in right up there at the top. Warren and Russell have created a winner here and one for the keeper shelf! Well done!
My thanks to Sunrise Publishing for a copy of this book. I was not expected to leave a positive review. The opinion here is completely my own.
I first met and loved Boone when I’ve met him in the PJ Sugar series. I wanted him to get the girl, but also didn’t want him to get the girl… and was excited to see he is getting his own story.
Vivien comes across very dramatic (sometimes I did wonder if people like this really exists 😊), but only Boone sees what is really behind all the drama. I enjoyed seeing them together, they had great chemistry together and enjoyed the lessons learned by both, but Boone I felt really had to let go of others’ expectations of him. Boone sort of grounded Viv and Viv pushed Boone past is boundaries to being kind of a more fun version of himself.
“Grace isn't just for other people. Maybe you didn't get that memo.”
There was also an element of danger, which ended up going a totally different direction than what I thought and expected will happen.
I again enjoyed meeting up with some of my favourite Deep Haven regulars and looking forward to the next book which intrigued me with the spoiler at the end of Then Came You and will catch me up with what happened to Colleen Decker since we've met her in You Don't Know Me
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
I've read many of Susan May Warren's books, I haven't read her PJ Sugar series yet. (Sadly!)
I first found Rachel D. Russell's books when I heard about Sunrise publishing from following Susan May Warren, the fact that Russell wrote an Army hero made Still the One a new favorite romance.
I've heard a lot about Boone from following lovers of Warren and I was really glad I got to "meet" him in Then Came You. He's the kinda hero that you can't help but love when there's danger about.
Vivian was a character I looked forward to finding out more about and man, oh, man! Her story, yikes... It was so good, even more fun, and a tad bit embarrassing at times which made it even better!
Notes: kisses, a stalker, some fights but no real violence, admiring the looks of the hero/heroine.
Recommdation: 18+ due to romance.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Then Came You is another wonderful jaunt back to one of my favorite towns, Deep Haven. And even though it was great to peek at characters from previous books, I believe that this story could be enjoyed even as a stand alone novel.
Boone and Vivien had a great meet cute! I enjoyed the way that event pretty much threw them romantically together in the eyes of all of the townspeople. But their connection really grew when they were able to get to know each other on their own time.
I will admit that Vivien drove me a bit nuts sometimes. She and Boone had differing backstories, yet they had some similar hurdles to overcome in their own lives that involved people’s perceptions of them and whether those perceptions mattered. I was mostly frustrated with Viv for not taking the threats that arose seriously. But, no worries. Boone is plenty serious for the both of them! This was a fun story and I look forward to reading more in the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Years of expectations and stress have left Detective Boone Buckham rapidly heading toward burnout. With a promotion hanging in the balance, he reluctantly agrees to a vacation in Deep Haven. What he doesn’t count on is meeting Vivie.
The small-town setting really added a lot to this story. Local shops, high school football games, festivals — it all sounds so cozy and fun!
I loved how Vivien simultaneously pushed Boone out of his comfort zone and helped him relax.
Their romance had many cute moments, like how “in character” they got while reading lines from the play.
Boone’s struggle with expectations, trying to decide between the life he wants and the life he thought he wanted (or should want), really resonated.
A couple of nitpicks: * The Beth and Gordy subplots were resolved a bit too quickly * Vivien could be a little pushy at times

Content Notes: noticing and awareness, mention of a woman’s curves, touching, infidelity, stalking, description of a murder (not overly graphic), mention of police brutality, two characters used to serve in the Army (one was injured), some very mild innuendo, flirting, one use of “sexy,” kissing, doubt about whether a man is truly the biological father of his son, alcoholism, a woman is called a “tramp,” mention of getting shot, mention of beating someone up in tenth grade, mention that a man once cornered a woman in her dressing room (he’s stopped before anything happened), near-death from drowning, mention of the mafia, mention of a parent being ill, mention of gambling, blood, some mild violence (nothing overly graphic), mention of a “foul word” and a man saying things that aren’t G-rated
"Oh, yes. There are days for chocolate chunk, days for mocha madness, days for sherbet. I suppose there are even days for vanilla."
Oh, what a fun and memorable return trip to Deep Haven! Rachel D Russell brings Susan May Warren's Boone Buckam from her PJ Sugar series to Deep Haven but this Boone is more the mature, serious, heart-broken, cautious, and angry version of the Boone we met in the previous books. Don't worry if you haven't read the PJ Sugar series; this book totally works as a stand-alone too. If you enjoy contemporary romance with a bit of mystery and suspense, you will absolutely love this book. Deep Haven is definitely the place to be this summer!
Boone and Vivien are complete opposites but have so much fun together. Vivien desperately needs Boone's steady, serious, focused attention and protection while Boone thrives on her playful, imaginative, dramatic take on life. Their dialogue is absolutely delightful and their relationship is incredibly sweet. The threats Vivien receives add more drama to the story. Boone and Vivien both struggle with feeling 'not enough' and the unconditional love and acceptance they finally find is heart-warming and inspiring. I love hanging out with all the characters in Deep Haven; every time I pick up a Deep Haven novel I feel like I'm going back to a beloved town that I've called my vacation town for decades.
I received the book from the publisher/author and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
2.5 stars. Not a bad book. It has been ages since I read the PJ Sugar series so I didn’t remember Boone or their story at all. So that didn’t help the constant references to that. A little too spicy for me and only a little faith aspect — those things were a disappointment to me. The mystery/crime wasn’t overly believable but maybe I’m too picky. It’s a simple, contemporary story without heaps of depth and problems are easily resolved. So if that’s your thing than you’ll like this more than me. I didn’t dislike it, I just love other books more.
Rachel Russell just nails it. Both here in Then Came You and her debut, Still The One. What a wonderful return to Deep Haven and the wonderful characters there. Boone - I've been looking forward to his story for a long while, and couldn't have been happier with the way Rachel portrayed him. And Vivian LOL - That girl is hilarious and has such depth (despite her outwardly bubbly impression). Her backstory regarding her childhood just destroyed me. This story has such heart, a mystery that kept me intrigued and a wonderful gospel message. A side note - I admire the way this author gives her readers the happy ending we all crave, without every little thing being wrapped up perfectly. Excellent addition to this fun series! I am looking forward to more from this author.
Ahh, yes. We get Boone Buckham's story now! He was the guy back in the PJ Sugar series, the loyal guy, that didn't get the girl. I was really excited to see him get his own HEA. And I really enjoyed it. His loyalty is something I loved and him and Vivian were so fun to watch. That first line hooked me from the beginning and I ate this story up! It's fun, with good character growth and a touch of some mystery. If you need a good book to give you a bit of a vacay, I'd recommend this book! I recieved a complementary copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are honest and completely my own.
I have read quite a few books by Susan Warren and i like her style of writing. I especially enjoy that she writes inspirational Christian books, but she doesn't beat you over the head with the Christian theme. This is the first book of the series I have read. It was definitely a very "fluffy" romance. Meaning it is a book that now I am done with it, I will probably not think of it again or remember what happened. But it was something that was good enough to want to finish.
In the mood for a sweet romance? Look no further. Boone Buckam takes a vacation in Deep Haven, not planning on Vivian Calhoun walking into his life. He's taking a break from his job as a police detective, but when he finds out someone is stalking Vivian, he takes the case. I love the contrast in Boone trying to relax and get his life together, while Vivian ropes him into things way outside of his comfort zone. Readers will fall in love with Vivian, Boone and the whole town of Deep Haven! #TeamBoone 100%
As a long-time fan of author Susan Mary Warren, I was delighted to discover a new series developed by her and several new authors set in the all time favorite small town of Deep Haven where so many of the author’s books have taken place. It has been such fun meeting up with old favorite characters who show up throughout the pages of this series, usually to encourage the primary characters in one way or another. That has certainly been the case with Then Came You in which several familiar faces interacted with Boone and Vivian as their own story developed.
Vivacious Vivian is an actress who has returned to Deep Haven after yet another failure in her New York acting career. She hopes to prove herself by producing a local theater production but encounters one roadblock after another including more than one threatening incident.
“Hottie” Boone is a police officer who has been ordered to take some time off to chill and deal with his anger issues. Used to an active life, Boone is not looking forward to a boring summer by the lake with his assigned reading – at least not until he meets Vivian. Knowing that he will be leaving New Haven in a short time Boone attempts to resist her charm but there is just something about her that makes him feel alive.
Then Came You is a fun read, perfect for the beach or a backyard hammock. Light-hearted and humorous at times, the story includes plenty of action and romance as well as a touch of suspense. And as all Warren fans will know, there is a bit of a lesson in faith and life woven into the narrative as well. Both Vivian and Boone deal with insecurity and their journey to wholeness could be helpful to others who struggle with the same issues.
I thoroughly enjoyed Then Came You and look forward to future books in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book provided by Just Read Tours. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
Finally! Boone (from Susan May Warren's P.J. Sugar series) and Vivien (from the Deep Haven series) have their own book! Boone has been ordered on a 5-week vacation from his detective job to deal with some "issues," to Minnesota resort town Deep Haven. He arrives with his restored Mustang just in time for Vivien, who's avoiding her mean-girl half-sister Sabrina, to pair up with him for the car show/town parade. Sparks definitely fly...and so does the gossip (it is a small town, remember? Although a largely well-meaning one.)
Vivien is an actress who abruptly left NYC for Deep Haven after an embarrassing defeat and some unpleasant stalker experiences. Now, she's shaping up to direct a one-act play with the adults of Deep Haven. Boone is definitely some eye candy (as is his car), but underneath that is a good man who truly cares for others. The town has decided they are a couple; who are they to argue?
But trouble shows up. Is the stalker back in Vivien's life? And can Boone meet the conditions of his "vacation," in order to be hired for his dream job back in Kellogg? Or does God have something else--something better--in mind for them both?
Jump back into Deep Haven in its newest iteration, Rachel D. Russell's Then Came You. You'll delight in seeing Deep Haven characters from other books in the series; and you'll be charmed by Vivien's and Boone's love story. Wonderful!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
"Then Came You" is such a great addition to the Deep Haven Collection! I had been looking forward to Vivien's story since the previous novels and then have Boone come to town made these such a great read! Boone and Vivien are both hurting individuals with things in their pasts that they are working through and needing to find healing in their lives. Deep Haven is just the place for this, even though at first it may not seem that way. Vivien is used to being on stage, in the spotlight; however that does not protect herself and her heart as much as she wants others to believe that she is fine. I love how seamlessly these novels in this collection knit together and flow so smoothly even with having various authors contribute. My favorite thing about this book and this series is getting to revisit various characters from past novels and seeing how life is going for them now and the homey feel to the town and the shops and homes that come to life on the pages.
This was a wonderful addition to the Deep Haven collection as we get to see why Vivien's back in Deep Haven from New York City as she showed up unexpectedly in the last book as a side character. Boone is from one of Susan May Warren's other series, P. J. Sugar, and there were a lot of characters from multiple other series that are set in Deep Haven so that was a lot of fun to catch up with them. Both Boone and Vivien feel like they need to live up to expectations and prove themselves but both are having a hard go of it for different reasons. I enjoyed watching them work through their pasts and baggage to discover who they were meant to be. There was something that one of Boone's buddies said about embracing the life you have, not the one you expected to have or others expect you to have that was a good reminder for me as well. There was some humor, some wonderful romantic moments and some suspense. I highly recommend this book if you like romance!

Then Came You Deep Haven Collection #4 By Rachel D. Russell presented by Susan May Warren
A forced "vacation" is the last thing, Detective Daniel "Boone" Buckam wants and ordered to spend it in Deep Haven is almost more than he can stand. But his R&R takes a most unexpected and rather pleasant turn when Vivien Calhoun comes into his life.
Vivien needs a stand-in boyfriend to counter her half-sister's venomous disposition. But she gets more than that when she manages to get them caught up in a parade. After Boone's rescue, Vivie determines that she will help Boone out but trouble seems determined to mess up her carefully laid plans.
But one can't tell the heart how to behave and who to like. But Vivien knows she is a mess and not at all who Boone needs in his life, especially if he plans on returning home and becoming Chief of Police.
Then Came You is a fun addition to the world of Deep Haven that readers have come to know and love over the years. This is a chance for two characters to find healing and perhaps love in the process. And there is a mystery with a touch of danger running through the story, as well, perfect for Boone to put his detective skills to work. I really love this newest addition to Deep Haven and love how past characters are present and integral parts of the story. Now this book is part of a series but it is able to be enjoyed as a complete story on its own, you just won't have all the back story. So sit back and get ready to enjoy a perfect summer read.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
Then Came You by Rachel D. Russell and Susan May Warren reaches even further back than Warren’s Deep Haven series. Fans of the PJ Sugar series should recognize this hero’s name.
From the moment Boone and Vivien meet, I was rooting for this couple. Vivien is vivacious and friendly with everyone, yet she hides doubts and insecurities behind her flamboyant personality. Boone is serious and trying to live up to expectations instead of living the life he wants to live. While these two may seem like complete opposites, they bring out the best in each other, which makes their relationship both believable and sustainable. Add in a bit of a mystery, and this is another fun read in the Deep Haven Collection.
As this series continues, I would love to see a firmer sense of the new authors’ voices. For whatever reason, I heard Warren’s author voice in this book over Russell’s (which didn’t happen in the first book these two co-wrote). Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy what Warren writes, but if I’m going to keep reading these new authors after this series end, I want to “hear” them.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I have been a fan of Susan May Warren for many years. I have been enjoying her collaboration with New Authors in the Deep Haven Series. Then Came You by Rachel D. Russell is the newest book in this series.
Detective Daniel “Boone” Buckam has been working extremely hard at his career for 14yrs. He is now taking a mandatory vacation away from work and has retreated to the town of Deep Haven. He is hoping to get relaxed enough to return to Minnesota and become Chief of Police. He then meets Vivien Calhoun. Vivien has a lot of spunk for life and is an actress. Well, she was a Broadway actress but has taken refuge in Deep Haven because of a Stalker. Daniel is taking a liking to Vivien and notices she may have danger lurking behind her. He wants to do everything to protect her from danger and sticks by her side. Daniel is trying to guard his heart, but Vivien making that quite hard. Will Daniel help keep Vivien safe from her stalker? Will Vivien get him to let his guard down to love again?
I was so focused on this book from the very beginning. The storyline started fast and it never slowed down, which I like that type of reading. Daniel is a career driven person, but when he meets Vivien he thinks coming to Deep Haven was a good thing. I also like the "small town" cozy feel in this story. Then Came You is filled with Mystery, Fun, Love, Drama and so much more! I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy a clean fun read!
I love being able to visit Deep Haven again and see characters I've met before. I felt a little lost since I didn't read the PJ Sugar series and with Boone being her "former flame", she is mentioned quite a bit in this book. There was a bit of a "catch up" of information, so I got the general gist of what had happened before. I did not figure out who was behind Vivien's deliveries so I was surprised at the reveal. I liked the biblical message and the growth the characters exhibited. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
I have read other books in this series and this one was just as good! Lots of laughs, great characters, interesting story line that kept my interest from beginning to end!
Boone and Vivien were great together although opposites; and they kept me laughing all throughout the story with their energy and enthusiasm.
Clean, Christian romance that will definitely make you smile! I loved it!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
Then Came You is book four in the Deep Haven collection. This story is written by Susan May Warren and Rachel D. Russel. This is Vivien's and Boone's story. Boone has been sent to Deep Haven to rest and get his career back on track. He got caught by Vivien to take part in a car parade to get away from her step-sister. From there he gets pulled into her life. I love this series. This is one of the best stories in it so far. I enjoyed catching up with Boone, from the PJ Sugar series, as well as some of the other residents of Deep Haven. I enjoyed the depth that this story has, it was more than just a Christian romance story, it also has mystery and suspense. I liked how Boone and Vivien both went back to their careers and how they viewed them after being away. This is such a good series, I look forward to the rest of the books. I received a complimentary copy of this story through the JustRead Book Tour. This is my honest review.
Then Came You by Rachel D. Russell is the fourth book in the Deep Haven Collection, set in Susan May Warren’s fictional town of Deep Haven, MN. Daniel “Boone” Buckham is sent to Deep Haven for some R & R; Vivian Calhoun is an actress trying to make the most of some difficult circumstances. The way they meet is just perfect. It’s totally Vivian and the fact that Boone gets sucked into the whole situation is fantastic!
The story unfolds so naturally that before you realize it, the two of them are good friends (or more?). But they have some things to work through and the climax—wow! I love romances because the ending has a particular guarantee, but that doesn’t mean the getting there is easy or even expected. Boon and Viv take a wild ride, which is so fitting to both their personalities.
I hope you’ll enjoy returning to Deep Harbor as much as I did.

The second I heard that this book would be about Police Detective Boone, (from Susan May Warren's PJ Sugar Series), I knew I had to read it. I loved getting to know more about Boone, and Vivien as they become friend while working on the community theater's play and trying to figure out who is stalking Vivien.
I loved how this book brings back familiar characters, in this delightful mystery romance. I loved how they kept running into each other, and end up working together. This is is a fun book with a lot going on, mystery, and funny situations that kept the pages turning. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Vivien and Boone as they help each other, and how Vivien draws Boone out of his comfort zone.
A heartwarming opposites attract romance, set in the charming town of Deep Haven. There was so much about this fun-filled, engaging read to love from its wonderful characters to the cozy Deep Haven setting and intriguing mystery. You definitely won't want to miss this one!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I am SO glad that Russell has given us a story for Vivien. I bet you thought I was going to say Boone, right? I'm glad for that too, but when I really dislike a character, which I have basically not really cared for Vivien since she came on the scene, I want to see if I'll change my mind about them when given their own story. Russell has successfully, and quite brilliantly I might add, changed my mind about Vivien.
How? Essentially she made Vivien relatable to me. Here is a character that I just considered entitled, needy, center-of-attention graber, annoying person. And little by little, Russell breaks me down, turns Vivien into a real person (gasp), and makes me actually like her. Gosh I can't even believe I said those words. But seriously - kudos to an author who can do that. I know it's my own feelings about this character. But when you can turn my mind around about something in a book/series, you are doing something write. Russell is doing everything right!
Of course there is more to the story. I mean, there's Boone. SWOON! He's a flawed hero with a big heart, and one that immediately grabbed my attention. Honestly, I don't know him from Warren's previous releases, so he was a new-to-me character. Didn't matter to me though, I loved him just the way he was. But moreso, I like how Russell showed his vulnerability. And Vivien's. You'll have to read to understand what I mean.
Deep Haven is a place I just don't ever want to leave. And Russell is an author I'm keeping an eye on. I can't wait to see what's in her future! Bring me more books! Contemporary romance fans are in for a treat with the latest installment of the Deep Haven series. I do recommend reading them all, in order. While it could probably be read as a stand alone, you'll thank me later for starting on book one. :)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Then Came You by Rachel D. Russell, Susan May Warren Book 4 in the Deep Haven Collection Rating: 4.5/5 Release Date: July 6, 2021
Even though I have a large stack of books I need to review, I could not pass up the chance to read what came next in Deep Haven. I have not read the PJ Sugar series yet (although I just purchased the set on sale) so I will now need to go back and read them to discover more about Boone, but I did not think it was necessary to have read that series to understand Boone's past. The author does a great job of giving you his background and exploring his hurt and insecurities.
From the beginning of the book, the author draws you in and hooks the reader with her first line: "Vivien Calhoun needed a man within the next five minutes." Who doesn't need to read more to find out why? I couldn't stop reading lol.
When Vivien enlists Boone's help and red mustang to rescue from her devious half-sister, she brings some life and zest back into Boone's life as he starts his mandatory leave in Deep Haven to deal with his anger issues away from the police force. As a detective who is on the short list for the next chief, he is willing to do whatever his chief says to make sure he solidifies his chances. Boone doesn't know who this vivacious lady is but when he observes the way her half-sister speaks to her, he decides to play along. He is in Deep Haven to relax, talk to a therapist and read the book his chief gave him. He does not need any distractions. After having his heart broken before, he fills his days with work and now, on vacation, doesn't quite know what to do with himself. Vivien is only too willing to enlist his help with her summer theater production and eventually even casts Boone as the lead. Vivien, a former broadway star, is back in Deep Haven to prove she's not a failure and encourage the theatrical aspirations of her fellow townsfolk. When Vivien's past seems to have followed her to Deep Haven, can Boone help her solve the mystery and keep her safe? Will Boone's dreams of making his father proud conflict with his dreams of having a life with Vivien?
I loved how the author made Vivien and Boone seem so different when in reality, they were very similar. I loved how the small town aspect came into play since everyone thought they were together from that parade onwards. Even though Boone was leaving, he began to find that still, small voice whispering wisdom to him. He felt he had found a place where he could breathe - where he could be himself. "Everything about you—the real you, goofy and sexy and flirty and fun, all of it—I like who you are.” And he liked who he was when he was with her."
He could not get her out of his head (and heart?). "He shook his head. Yep, he definitely had a type. Vivien. Bold and courageous and so full of life. She was adventure and zeal and added a brightness to his day. She turned a plain, ordinary day into something extraordinary."
I highly recommend if you enjoy Christian romance with humor, heart and some mystery.

Readers travel back to the tightly-knit community of Deep Haven, Minnesota, with this inspirational contemporary romance, in this collaboration by best-selling author Susan May Warren and author Rachel D. Russell.
In Then Came You, burnt out detective Boone Buckham is on a mandated vacation in Deep Haven, forced to deal with his anger and health issues. Actress Vivien Calhoun is in Deep Haven, trying to prove herself to her hometown by directing a local theatrical production. Vivacious Vivien is a contrast to the brooding Boone, but they manage to bring the best out in each other -- eventually.
Boone will be familiar to her fans from Warren’s PJ Sugar collection. But this book can be read on its own, as it gives enough background into Boone’s past. When Vivien’s past follows her to Deep Haven, in the form of a stalker, Boone comes to her rescue. They help each other fight the demons of their past that affect their present reality.
The spiritual elements are light, the characterization is solid, and the plot flows smoothly. All in all, Russell had done an excellent job in recreating Boone, giving him a happily-ever-after that feels right, and allowing readers to connect with Boone and Vivien’s struggles as they face the past.
Both are looking for acceptance and approval -- Vivien from her hometown, Boone from his father. Both try to live up to others’ expectations as they perceive them. Do they learn the truth about who God wants them to be, instead of letting others’ expectations direct the course of their lives? Read it and see!
Recommended for adult readers and Susan May Warren fans, especially those who loved her PJ Sugar, Deep Haven, and Christensen family series.
