“You make me so happy, Will,”I said, feeling shy with the truth. I forced myself to maintain eye contact, wanting him to see the truth in my eyes as I whispered, “I see you too. All of you.”

I read someone saying that this book could be a baby of The Hating Game & The Spanish Love Deception, and I can confirm that it's true. Genesis works as a marketing assistant at a record firm. She dreams of producing an album of her own and when the opportunity strikes, she's ready to do anything to fulfill her dream by winning the competition that her company is offering. The only problem is that she has been partnered with her long time workplace nemesis and they don't see eye to eye. The characters were amazing, I loved Will & Genesis together! They were both smart, headstrong, resourceful and knew what they were doing. Their chemistry was palpable and the way they just eventually went from being enemies to friends to lovers was slow but natural, I really liked Genesis' progress. I also loved the side characters like Cora, Yari & Callum. I could stop smiling when they all got together in the end. I enjoyed the book and the writing but the last half felt a bit dragged tbh. The characters were really awesome but the story was cliche. Still, I never felt disengaged and enjoyed reading it!

3,5/5 (Goodreads for the love of God, will you please add half stars rating???)

Buttercup is the new Shortcake and Will Kobayashi, the new Aaron Blackford.

It was strange reading this book because I kept having flashbacks of The Hating Game and The Spanish Love Deception. If you put them both in a blender, I'm pretty sure you would end up with The Unexpected Fall by Anna Salcedo.

The Unexpected Fall is an enemies to somewhat friends to lovers workplace romance. This book is also delightfully diverse (Latina and Asian rep), and it has the forced proximity trope (which I love).

It follows Genesis Gonzalez who works for a music label (Siren Music Records) and has always dreamed of producing music. However, she's been stuck in the assistant position for years now. When the company announces that there will be a competition where two employees will have the chance to be featured on the company's most expected album and sign a contract with a record label, Genesis decides to take a chance on her dream and enters the competition.
Unfortunately, she's paired with Will Kobayashi, a Finance Analyst for Siren Music Records, and the one person she can't stand.
Both of them have waited their whole life for this opportunity, but can they set their differences aside for the sake of this project? Can they work together as a team?

This story was unbelievably cute but I found the beginning to be very slow: some scenes weren't necessary and Will wasn't very likeable at first, especially when compared to Aaron Blackford (who's amazing).

All in all, this was an entertaining and addictive read and for a debut novel, I think it was pretty good.

what you can expect from The Unexpected Fall is a hate to love, slowburn, office romance (with a twist)... this is also the author's debut novel :)

this was so stinkin' sweet! i honestly adored the romance between Genesis and Will and how well written the interracial romance was (heroine is Dominican-American and the hero is Japanese-American)

we get hit early with some lovely bantering and tension between Will and Genesis (which gave me the atmosphere of The Spanish Love Deception). their chemistry worked perfectly with the sweetest moments

“I’ll eat you out whenever you want,” he said hoarsely, and I froze. He blinked and cleared his throat, his cheeks turning pink. “I mean, take you out. Er, order takeout. For when we practice. For the contest.”

for a debut, it was really good! i enjoyed it so much and cannot wait for future releases from the author

*thank you to the author for providing me with an arc in exchange for and honest review*

4.5 stars!
rep: Dominican-American heroine, Japanese-American hero, Puerto Rican side character
Going off the fact that I have been struggling to read novels all year, and have only read three novels compared to the ton of manga I've read, you can say that I was scared to read The Unexpected Fall because I knew I wanted to like this book. And much to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Compared to the last romance novel I read, I enjoyed being in Genesis' thoughts and point of view. You can really feel the emotions she feels and/or explains during certain situations such as talk about her father, scenes with Will, or about her family. There were times I caught myself almost tearing up because I felt how strong the emotions were in a certain scene, which is always a huge thing for me when I read a book. If a book can make me truly feel emotions strongly like laughing out loud or crying then I know it's pretty damn good.

As for Will, he was such a great love interest. I absolutely loved him from the first time he was introduced. He was my favorite type of man that I adore reading about in a romance story. Will exuded this sexy alpha, but caring man in a suit and I melted. He reminded me of all my favorite romance heroes, so of freaking course, I fell in love with him to. I felt so jealous of Genesis throughout the story that I almost started to dislike her (but not really).

Genesis and Will's love story was felt throughout the the page. Even during their "hateful" banter in the beginning, you can just tell and see the little hints of each of their real intentions/feelings. It was all there, but you can also feel the hatred Genesis felt. Little scenes here and there that built up the slow burn romance that made you want them to just hurry up and spill all their fillings out.

I really enjoyed how well-balanced the deep and meaningful conversations and the spicy and lovey-dovey scenes were. It truly gave me what I wanted. I got to see two people grow to know each other mentally and emotional through meaningful and intimate conversations and connections while also getting the spicy scenes to top it off. Plus the music side of it all was very fun and seeing the way Genesis and Will connected so deeply through their passion for music was outstanding. You felt what they felt about music, and I think that helped carry the story along.

Also, the side characters are great. I loved the friendships and family relationships that Genesis and Will had. It really added to the story and I am looking to the my favorite side character ship to get their story. Like just give them to me already!

So, overall, this story exceeded any expectations that I might've had especially for a debut novel. I was pleasantly surprised and I am looking forward to Salcedo's next book.

QOTD: Have you ever entered a talent contest?
My A: Never! I’m wayyy too anxious to ever do something that brave!
.
It’s been a minute since I’ve read one of my NetGalley books! I’ve been caught up through December for about a month now and I’ve been (impatiently) waiting for some of the other books to get closer to their pub dates. I snagged this one over the weekend and was instantly hooked!
.
An enemies to lovers workplace romance with a sticky sweet H and a sharp and sassy h, this book is a must read! And the best part... It’s already out so there is no waiting to go and grab it RIGHT NOW. These two had serious chemistry, inside the studio and at the office. And as the story unfolds you just swoon harder and harder. Will Kobayashi is about to be your newest book boyfriend because he was HOT and the mostpateint sweetheart of a guy! Genesis Gonzalez’s Dominican-American culture blends with Will’s Japanese-American culture so perfectly. It was so fun reading these two experience each other’s food, celebrations and families and bond over being the children of immigrant parents. Toss in the high stakes musical competition and the late night jam sessions and take out food, these two have effortlessly found their way on my Favorite Couples list!
.

3.5 stars! This was sweet and everything a romance comedy should be.

Definitely for you if you enjoy:
- One sided pining
- Forced proximity
- Enemies to lovers

When Genesis is about to quit her entry level job to find one where she could have a better opportunity to become a producer, an opportunity is presented at her job. The recording company she works for opens a contest where they can submit a song for an album the company is releasing. The only problem? She’s paired with her nemesis, Will. He’s cold, boring and nothing but a pretty face who (for some reason) hates her.

All they can do is disagree each other but finally they call a truce, both wanting to win this contest. Will insists trust needs to be offered to write an amazing song and soon enough, they find themselves laughing and teasing one another. As time goes one, neither of them can help opening up to Will about their dreams and families. As Genesis’s feelings grow for this person she thought she hated, she tries to just focus on the song but realizes that maybe she’s been reading Will wrong all these years and maybe she’s not alone in these growing feelings.

📚

This one was sweet and fun! I enjoyed it once the book started moving a little more. The beginning (like the first 35%) was really dragging. I though about how it needed to lay a foundation but I feel like it went into too much detail since some of those things never really came back in the book. Genesis’s familial issues seemed deep and like it would be a future issue in the relationship but it just seemed like something that was mentioned many times before and then something that was just magically fixed when it came time to get serious about her relationship with Will. I was waiting for it to come up but it never did especially for how traumatic it would be to a teenager.

Genesis and Will’s chemistry was great and I adored them on the pages together. Again, nothing happened between them for the first 35% of the book but the remaining 65% did make up for it. Will’s sweet words were dreamy and warm. He was the epitome of a fictional man written by a woman like yes, where do I find one like this?!

The moments of culture and family were great and usually I enjoy them so much although I felt like her relationship with her sister and details about her extended family were useless details that could’ve been used towards Will and Gensis’s romance. I suppose I’m just someone who likes being dropped right into the action of things and some people may be interested in all the details like that.

There was also this part later in the book where her and her sister comment kn one another’s bodies like they were better or worse off having parts of their bodies (larger hips, a bigger butt, etc). It was so weird and off putting and had nothing to do with the storyline. It was so unnecessary. Like get with the times? That was so… just unnecessary which seemed to be a theme in this book.

Thanks you Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Genesis hates Will. Has hated him since her first day at her new job at a Siren Music Records when he completely ignored her attempts to make friends with her new coworkers. Now, two years later, Genesis and Will find themselves partnered on a company wide contest. Tired of putting her dream job as a music producer on hold, Genesis decides she can suffer through a few months of working with Will, if only to win the coveted prize: a record deal with the label.

I absolutely loved this book! I’m a sucker for workplace/forced proximity romances and this one delivered. It’s one of those books that draws you in and makes you part of the story. The author wrote each character so well, truly making them come to life. I loved that the characters had realistic flaws that weren’t glossed over and that the MC wasn’t blind to them. Speaking of the MC, Genesis was such a well rounded character. She was written in a way that it was easy to relate to and understand. The cultural details also helped develop not only the characters, but also the plot. The conflict was perfect and related very well to the plot. It was topical without being predictable which I appreciated.
There really isn’t anything I didn’t like about this book. I do wish we could have been privy to more of Will’s feelings/what was going on in his head but that is hard to do without a duel POV. All together, I don’t feel that it detracted too much from the plot line.
I would probably classify this one one sided enemies/rivals to lovers, singular POV. I would recommend this book to fans of The Spanish Love Deception or The Hating Game. Personally, I would rank the spice level as slightly higher than TSLD. Will had me BLUSHING with the unexpected dirty talk too!

The Unexpected Fall
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Romance
Format: Kindle eBook
Date Published: 11/20/21
Author: Anna Salcedo
Publisher: Independently Published
Pages: 431
Goodreads Rating: 3.73

I requested a digital advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Anna Salcedo and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: Genesis Gonzalez has spent the last two years trying to prove herself at Siren Music Records. She was just about to throw in the towel when her job announced an opportunity that could change everything—a work contest that would allow two employees the opportunity to have their song on the label’s highly anticipated collaborative album, which features music from all their hottest artists. But her plans take an unexpected turn when she finds out that she gets paired with Will, who she is humanly incapable of getting along with. They have three months to create a song that will impress the record label enough to make both of their dreams come true. But the one thing Genesis could’ve never seen coming is that the only thing harder than getting along is not falling in love …

My Thoughts: The author did a fantastic job of incorporating the Japanese (Will) and Dominican (Genesis) cultures and customs into the American lifestyles. This has an enemy to friends to lovers trope, which is one of my favorite types of tropes. The beginning starts out pretty slow with a lot of internal monologue and it takes a bit before we really get into the character interactions. The characters are developed well with depth, chemistry, hateful then witty banter, were creative, and the supporting characters really balanced out the mix. The author’s writing style had a sense of complexity, creativity, and kept me engaged from beginning to end. With this being a debut novel for Salcedo, I cannot wait until her next novel. This book was released already, so go buy it!

Huge thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC ✨

This book reminds me of The Spanish Love Deception and The Hating Game but make it cuter, heartwarming and swoon-worthy!
I love how the slow pace builds up the chemistry, burn the tensed brigde between them to form a mutual friendship. But things already started heated up the moment they set eyes on each other, and they pretty much clashed every thing they met. And look at how improved their relationship after the partnership! I dont mind the similar vibes at all because the whole plot is the author's idea herself, and i like how she planned her story line and make it so interesting to read. Maybe i was in the mood for romance books, so i truly enjoyed this one. I like how this book mentioned a lot of sensitive issues like sexism, racism, etc which are important for people to acknowledge and take action when these happened. Overall, it was a cute read for me, mind you i finished this in one go!

3.5/5 stars | I went into this book expecting to really love it and unfortunately for the first 50% that wasn’t really the case. I found the beginning to be really slow and I couldn’t get attached to the story/characters because of this.

With that being said, I definitely think the book improved after the halfway mark and I did enjoy Genesis and Will’s relationship - they had a lot of cute moments and some amazing quotes (especially from Will)! I love how they bonded over music, their songwriting and the album part was so cute!

Overall, it was a cute book and had some good moments! I just think, in my opinion, it was longer than it needed to be and was pretty slow to begin with. BUT Genesis and Will were super cute and their moments/relationship development is why it’s 3.5/5 stars for me <3

This book has: slow-burn, enemies to friends to lovers, forced proximity and office romance. Latinx and Asian rep (!)

I honestly had so much fun reading this book and I have no idea why is not as hyped as it should be. It gave me all the TSLD and THG vibes especially in the beginning. But it has all this music world involved that it was amazing. I love music and I love to read books about it as well.

Genesis was fun and I loved that she wasn’t perfect and had many flaws. I loved her relationship with her sister and cousin, it reminded me a lot of mine with my own family 🙊 Will Tobayashi was amazing as well. Although I’m a bit conflicted about this men haha. But I loved how he hyped and supported Genesis. And they’re just the cutest together.

PLUS! I loved the Latinx and Japanese rep here! I’d have loved to see more about Japanese culture but seeing that this book is written from Genesis’ POV, it’s understandable.

I didn’t give it 5 starts because I found the beginning a bit slow and repetitive. And well just some minor things but I don’t want to give any spoilers.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Genesis is a marketing assistant at a record company, but some of her male coworkers think that's synonymous with "coffee girl." So when an opportunity comes along for her to join in a competition to produce a record, she jumps at the chance. Unfortunately, her partner on the project is Will, the gorgeous guy in Finance who seems to charm everyone but her. She agrees to call a truce with him during the three months of the contest. The friendship that develops between them leaves her unsure. How can she trust that this new version of Will is real?

This strong debut strikes a good balance between light-hearted and emotional. The voice captured me right away. The writing is impeccable. Will and Genesis and both good-hearted, caring people with a strong devotion to family. They made this novel a pleasure to read. It's a long book for the genre—the pacing is leisurely but not boring. There are some steamy scenes if you like your romance with a bit of spice.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.

2 stars.

This book definitely fell into the category of cliché and not my style for me. The main character Genesis was so oblivious to whatever happened around her and the way in which she held herself and regarded the world was just obnoxious. While I have to say that I like the premise of this book, I have to be honest with myself and say that I did not enjoy it in the slightest. I pushed through to get to the end and even the ending is predictable and can be seen from a mile away. This will probably be a book someone will enjoy, sadly that person isn't me.

The Unexpected Fall is an outstanding diverse romance that takes place inside a workplace. It is, without a doubt, the cutest thing in the world.

Genesis Gonzalez is attempting to establish herself at Siren Music Records, where she has worked for the past two years. She's always loved music, thanks to her father, and her dreams have always revolved around creating music. Her dreams, unfortunately, did not come true, and she is now stuck working as an assistant. Will Kobayashi, the Finance Analyst for Siren Music Records, works in the same office as Genesis. Will is the office's hotshot. He is pleasant to all and mingles with all, except for Genesis. They'd disliked one other since Genesis's second day on the job.

Their job has now announced a significant opportunity that may drastically alter both of their lives. It's a work contest that will provide two employees the chance to have their song featured on the labels of an upcoming collaboration album. With the big news, Genesis realizes that now is the best opportunity to pursue her goal and leave her job as an assistant. The only drawback seems to be that you don't get to choose your partner; they do.

Genesis is teamed up with Will for this contest, and they have only three months to write a song that will help them achieve their goals. What will happen, though, along the way? Will they be able to put their differences aside and work together to win this contest? And what if they don't win the contest? Will they still be able to achieve their goals in the end?

*thank you for the arc in exchange for an honest review*

Oh... my... gosh... I LOVED this, I couldn't get enough !!! Will and Genesis' banter throughout the first portion of the book was so amazing, it fit so perfectly but once they started being a team for the contest, he quite quickly became such a sweet man to her with the right amount of banter still. I loved seeing their relationship go from hate (although he truly never hated her) to love. It was so beautiful to see them mesh so perfectly into each others friend groups and families. I'm a sucker for a good hate to love workplace romance and this book did NOT disappoint!!

I loved seeing how Genesis, her sister and cousin all interacted with each other and just the closeness of the three of them. It reminding me of me and my niece when we were younger. I miss it sometimes but like Genesis said multiple times, it happens!

I really connected with Genesis on a few different levels, honestly how her brain thought about relationships was roughly how mine did until I met my boyfriend. I loved seeing her come out of her shell with Will and being able to read her thought process through it all, it was stunning.

I love how interested both Will (Japanese-American) and Genesis (Dominican-American) were in the others cultures and foods, it was sweet.

*Thank you so much Anna Salcedo for blessing me with an ARC of this book for an honest review, I can't wait for your next release!*

4,5/5 ⭐

“You waited for me,” I blurted out, unconsciously reaching a hand out toward him. I blushed, putting my hand down, but kept my eyes on his as he watched me with quiet eyes. “All this time, you cared about me, but you never said anything.”
“Genesis.” He sounded winded, eyes locked on mine. “I would’ve waited a hundred years for you. You are all I see, all I’ve ever seen.”
“I see you,” I said softly.”

First of all, I want to thank the author for giving an advanced copy of this book, I really appreciate it!
The Unexpected Fall follows Genesis Gonzales and her work nemesis Will Kobayashi both of whom work at Siren Music Records and strive to make their goal of producing and creating music respectively. As Genesis is about to give up on her dream, the perfect opportunity arrives: a work contest in which the winners will have their song featured on one of the label’s most anticipated collaborative albums. The problem? Genesis has been paired with Will and together they have three months to come up with a song that is up to the task and allows them to make their dreams a reality.
Okay, I am going to start this review by saying I absolutely love the premise of this book, I was a bit scared because it’s easy for romance books to forget the plot at some point and focus solely on the characters and their relationship- which I honestly don’t mind most of the time since I am more of a character-driven person; However, that is not the case with The Unexpected Fall, I believe the author was pretty consistent with the whole plot line of the music contest and I think the fact that this was a big part of the characters’ personalities helped a lot with keeping it on track.
I really enjoyed reading about the dynamic between Will and Genesis, though I have to admit some of the romance scenes were a bit too cheesy for my taste, still, their banter was really entertaining and I loved the support they offered each other. Now, something that did disappoint me a little was the third conflict act, jut because I really did not think it was an issue in the first place, I understand where one of the main characters was coming from by thinking there had been a breach of trust, but I actually think it was a bit underwhelming and it could have been handled better.
To end on a positive note, I have to talk about the thing I appreciated the most about this book and the author: It did not forget about the characters identities. Often, and I mean pretty often, I find that books mention characters have heritage from x country and then completely forget about it, like there’s nothing except the mention of it. This book did absolutely AMAZING in that aspect (at least in my opinion) their backgrounds – Genesis is Dominican- American and Will is Japanese- American- were seen in the little things that were put throughout the book, the food, their dynamic with their families, what they do or don’t in their respective homes, it was really refreshing to read about it. I feel like sometimes authors don’t really find a way to incorporate these details in a way that feels natural instead of a list of qualities/customs that proves the character’s background, so I greatly appreciated the small details that the author included in this book.
Overall, I believe if you’re looking for a quick and entertaining romance read with a bit of rivalry, banter, and music, of course, you should pick this one up and give it a chance😊.

This book was an absolute rollercoaster! In the best way.
As a romance reader, you usually start to get intrigued when there is already an interesting quip about an enemies to lovers, especially one that takes place in a workspace, as seen in other popular titles like The Hating Game and Dating you and Hating You, and I'm 100% sure that this is another masterpiece.
Just the writing style, which incorporates a good mixture of sarcasm, teasing and bickering, with the vivid details and hooking plot-line, makes this an easy read and easy to follow the storyline.
Our main characters, Genesis and Will, who are both likeable, complex characters, show lots of progress as the story goes on, and their equal love and passion for their jobs give such a unique and strong feeling to this book as you read it (almost as if you strive to achieve their goals as much as they do).
The addition of having it placed in a contest situation, where there's a lot riding on their results, just increases the tension and intrigue of the story, with both of them focused enough to work hard on making their own songs, and adding it to one of the company's highest rated albums. This motivation is such a powerful thing to read as a romance reader as it raises the stakes and makes the romance so much more worked after!
Overall, I would give this book 4.5/5 stars, and I'm sure this will be a major hit when it comes out!

The Spanish Love Deception meets The Hating Game, in the music industry.
Don’t you love a good romance book where the guy is in love with the girl and she hates his guts?
Starting from enemies, going straight to lovers?

“When I finally kiss you, it’s going to be more than a kiss in the dark.”
“I knew we will be magic together”.
THIS is the point where I started to enjoy the book.

Here are Genesis and Will, whom both work at Siren Music Records. Finance analyst Will and Marketing assistant Genesis dream of a music career while working on a 9-5 job. What happens when a challenge arrises at the office? A contest that would allow two employees the opportunity to have their song on the label’s highly anticipated album. Do you think they will make it?

I liked the book, the plot, the chemistry, but the first part was just too slow. I’m happy that we got to discover the background stories of our main characters, but I would have loved more to dive into the creative process of writing and producing the song, to bring out more the chemistry they have through a common passion: music. I really liked when the first lyrics hit them and how that was the starting point of the love story. I would have loved to see more of that.

Thank you NetGalley & Anna Salcedo for this ARC. It was a lovely read!

Title: The Unexpected Fall
Author: Anna Salcedo
Genre: Romantic Comedy
***I received a copy of this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for my honest feedback.

Tropes to expect: Enemies-to-Lovers, workplace romance, competition/games, miscommunication, slowburn, forced proximity

Written in one POV

Review:
When I open the pages of a romantic comedy, I fall into a safe space within the lines of that book. Some might say that this specific type of genre and trope are predictable, and while that is true, what sets each book apart is the characters of the books and the author's writing style.

To say that I fell for The Unexpected Fall is a complete understatement. I am obsessed with this book and since I read it on my Kindle, I will be ordering a hard copy of this book for my trophy shelf...I mean my bookshelf.

The Unexpected Fall follows Genesis Gonzalez [Dominican-American representation] in her quest to produce music at Siren Music Records, unfortunately for now she's an assistant - overqualified and hating her job. When it's announced that there will be a company wide competition where two employees will be paired up and the winners will receive a dream producer job and a record label.

Genesis decides to take a chance on her dream and enters the competition. Unexpectedly, she's paired with Will Kobayashi [Japanese-American representation], the Finance Analyst for Siren Music Records, office hottie, and the person she's hated since day on of working for Siren Music Records.

Enter forced proximity, slow burn moments [the bathroom scene...oh my GAWD], and the banter. Don't walk, run, to read this masterpiece.
