Delia Owens is apparently a wild-life scientist with 3 best-selling non-fiction books to her name. I can well believe it. Her descriptions of the natural world have a stunning lyrical beauty. There is a lot of this in her first novel – about a marsh girl living in a swamp off the Carolina coast. Fascinating descriptions of the swamp and its marine life are combined with romance and murder. One can't blame any writer for wanting to explore a different genre, but you sense that she endlessly – like the Marsh Girl – is aching to get back to where she feels at home. That said, it is a cracking story.

I highly recommend this book. Frankly, this reader believes that there is two ways that one can enjoy Where the Crawdads Sing. It is a fantastic read for enjoyment, but it can also be considered a history lesson. This book opens ones eyes on what life was like in the deep south during the early 1950's. Ms. Owens' shows a side to surviving, child age, shoe-less and on your own.
