A little book of travel inspirations, pairing stunning photographs with life lessons on why travel matters and what we learn when we pack our bags and see the world, from the renowned expert Patricia Schultz, author of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die.
Patricia Schultz is an American travel writer and author. Her books include the bestseller 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, which had over three million copies in print as of 2019.
I love this book that I received as a birthday gift. Written by Patricia Schultz, the author of "1,000 Places to See Before You Die", this book is replete with gorgeous color photos. Some pages are just a travel-related quote, such as, "Wherever you go, go with all your heart" - Confucius. Some are short travel exhortations: "Face Your Fears" and "Mind Your Manners", for example. If you don't have the time or the budget for travel, this book will whisk you away to faraway lands, while you remain on your sofa or in your bed. That the author is well-traveled is obvious in her every word. I am not nearly as well-traveled as I wish I were and I was surprised and delighted by some of her travel revelations. My favorite was that Iran made her feel "alert and alive in what is possibly the friendliest country on earth."
Delightful read and browse through book. Beautiful photography along with charming passages and quotes. A few places new to me included the 750-mile Shikoku pilgrimage in Japan (88 Buddhist temples along the route) and Canal du Midi, South of France.
This is one of my first reviews. First, the good - most of the photos are beautiful (a few were just nonsense, there was a hot dog with mustard on it with a caption stating “New York”). The bad? This wasn’t a “book”, it was a picture book with a few paragraphs of the author’s travels sprinkled in. Sadly those paragraphs were a page or two, if that and not extremely interesting. If you want to see a few travel photos then by all means, BORROW this “book” from the library. Do not waste your money on it.
I have rated this book as a 5 because it is beautiful and easy to read. It is a gorgeous picture book accompanied by the author's reccomendations and anectdotes.
I was thrilled each time I recognized a place I had been and intrigued when I saw places I had never considered visiting.
Whatever our varied reasons for traveling, I doubt many of us really want to log the number of miles the author seems to have done- but, never say never. I was glad to be comfortably ensonced in my easy chair reviewing her travels.
I have this deep yearning to experience the world and books that further develop that always interest me. This book was a quick read filled with personal anecdotes of adventures such as hiking the Inca trail to getting a sore knee treated with traditional Chinese medicine in China. I loved the quotes and photos and have bookmarked a few new adventures after reading.
Lots of colorful photographs of many places- some that I have been to and others not - I loved her advice on traveling and her philosophy of traveling and seeing the world as a travel writer and her short stories of friends that she made on the way. The colors made my life more enjoyable in the grey days of snow and winter!
Beautiful book. I saw this while travelling but picked it up when I got home. My favourite quote is "I had always wanted an adventurous life. It took a long time to realise that I was the only one who was going to make an adventurous life happen to me" Richard Bach.
This little book reminds me of so many places I've visited and now I have a list of more places to visit!
3.5 stars! A really beautiful gift book with some amazing travel pictures! In between the pictures are the author's travel stories and a few tips for going out and exploring the world beyond your hometown. It's definitely inspiring read and makes me super excited for my trip to Europe this summer!
Beautiful book. Easy read, but read languorously and experience traveling the world's continents - yes, even Antarctica (!)_, as it's supposed to be with the author. The pictures are magnificent.
Beautiful photos but the written content was pretty lame. I skimmed all the text but would definitely spend time looking at some of those photos again.
The photos are beautiful and I enjoyed the stories and anecdotes of the author’s traveling adventures. These stories and our own definitely ARE the reasons why we travel.
For those who already love to travel and for those seeking inspiration, this is a gorgeous book of photography, quotes, and reminiscences (my favorite…”Karma is real”).
A practical and inspirational travel guide to enhance any trip, filled with gorgeous photos to nudge your travel bug.
The book includes quotes to inspire your travel sensibilities, suggestions for unique experiences (like staying in a Japanese temple or shrine), and tips on how to make connections with the locals (ask questions, listen to music, learn the language). You'll be inspired to go off the beaten path to see something special and be encouraged to sometimes just walk, wander, and let luck and chance be your guides. Don't forget to try new foods and don't be afraid to try new activities.
Can't travel right now? That's okay, curl up on the couch and watch one of the suggested movies or just browse the photos and work out a dream trip.
Recommended for casual vacationers, serious adventurers, and armchair travelers alike.
As a young girl, I was filled with marvel and excitement of traveling to various places in the world once I’ve become an adult. Now, finally an adult, I’ve been giving reasons as to why I should not or cannot travel.
This book by author Patricia Schultz opened my childhood innocence and dreams again. The vivid pictures, thought-provoking quotes from various famous people, and her own account of traveling got me excited!
Money will be saved and lose in my lifetime, I’ll always have some sort of fear, which is just a part of human nature, but I shouldn’t be the actual gatekeeper of my childhood dreams. There’s so much adventure out there and I’m missing out on them!
The book is a great mix of beautiful photos and quotes about travel. It's more about inspiring people to travel, to pull their bag out from under their bed rather than telling you where to go or how to pack that bag.
Thanks to Playback Producers for the advance copy of the book as preparation for my interview with the author on the TravelCommons podcast. The interview is in episode #189; the episode and transcript is available here.
By the author of the encyclopedic 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, this new effort is a well-illustrated coffee table volume containing distillations of the kind of wisdom a traveler might wish to share with someone who aspires to offer their own selves to the road. As a traveler myself -- one who has visited 140-something countries -- I can tell you that the wisdom is sound, and no more so than in this: "Travel's biggest gift to us is making us realize we are all more alike than we are different."
This is a true inspiration to get out and experience this great wide earth. The quotes and photos are beautiful and thought provoking. I went to the Savannah book festival this weekend and heard her speak about her experiences and what a wise and phenomenal woman. I was so touched by her words. This would be a great gift for a person who has the drive and appreciation of new experiences.
Splendid! Interesting personal anecdotes, inspiring quotes, practical guidance and stunning photographs make me eager to travel (though minimizing my carbon footprint which was not mentioned).
