Smithers & Wing

Rate this book
Edinburgh is peaceful for once and that's bad for business.

The unquiet dead are uncharacteristically hushed, the demons are lethargic and the ghosts have found new hobbies. No-one seems to need supernatural supervision and Smithers and Wing are taking on new work.

Partners in supernatural crime-solving: Smithers is a magician ousted from the old guard and Wing is a detective out on her own. Together, they haunt the backstreets of Edinburgh, putting the bumps back to rest...for a fee.

With no other cases coming their way, they take on the cool-and-getting-colder case of Catriona Hewitt, a missing school girl.

It's not long before the pair have to decided if they can face their past to find her.

Queer supernatural detectives working weird and creepy cases in Edinburgh?! Yes please! Loved this first volume, the characters arrived fully formed and so engaging from the off, lots of lovely funny and tender moments in there. Heather creates so much in very few words. I liked the mix of new magic and old guard too. I loved Kirsty's detailed, atmospheric artwork. Can't wait to read more!

I actually joined the crowdfunder for this because I am insufferably woke and it was brought to my attention by insufferably woke friends.

It's a queer supernatural crime comix and it's actually pretty good, although it is the nature of comix (queer or not) to mostly feel fairly slight. I would certainly read another volume, but I would prefer to read it soon and these things are actually made on very artisanal timescales.

A mystical detective agency, a missing schoolgirl and some failing misogynistic Order are the main ingredients to this mystery graphic novel. I was hoping for a little more, like this should have been the first few intro pages to a bigger tale? It felt a bit superficial and rushed and I hope the rest of the story will have a bit more depth to it.

A really fun and refreshing story, the art is full of atmosphere and feeling (i love how they depict spells and magic) and i hope there's more from these characters to come!

Kickstarter funded tale of supernatural investigators hunting for a missing schoolgirl. Engaging story and nice art make for a fascinating tale with magical elements.
