In 1251 London, a group of five artisans meet every day to eat in the Three Staves tavern. When one is found murdered in his home, Graeme Ore, in his new position as one of the Sheriff's men, is charged with finding the killer. The evidence is confusing: a piece of charcoal has been left in the victim's mouth, a child's footprints are found outside the door. And then, a second diner dies, and Ore realizes that he must stop a killer intent on murdering all five. But why?
Meanwhile, Gavin Rownt finds himself the object of a noblewoman's affections. As Ore searches for a murderer, Rownt grapples with the age-old question: what does a woman want?
No spare language, no unnecessary verbiage. Just good well paced story with fine writing. A it expensive for a long novella type read as opposed to a full novel. And this author does not disappoint. Would love to know more about the main characters, though. Just sayin' ! Love her books. Sometimes she should elaborate a bit more but the time I have spent reading both her Matthew Cordwainer series ad this series I have hoped for more emotional engagement and still enjoyed the stories and the main characters as the are.
Another fine book that was very enjoyable to read. I can't wait for the next book in the series to be released. If you enjoy good mysteries, and find this time period of English history facinating--especially how the common people lived--you will greatly enjoy this book.
But too short. A good surprise motive and ending. Good introduction to the work of different crafts people of the time. Good description of dwellings. Noblewoman could have been more developed as a character?
Extremely well written, thoroughly engaging characters, and accurate depictions of the life and times the story covers. This is an amazing series, well worth reading!
