Adult suspense novel set in a small coastal NSW town.
Roger de Havilland, suspected of murdering his own daughter, returns to the little town and encounters Rosamunde and her daughter Tessa who are trying to start a new life.
I remember reading this as a wee lass of 16! This landed in my hot little hands via my mother, who worked at the newspaper that received an advanced copy. Since the cover mentioned Mary Higgins Clark, and Mum knew good ol' Mary wrote tame mysteries, she figured it was okay for me to have a squiz. I was shocked at the frank depictions of child molestation, which is the reason I dropped two stars from an otherwise fast-paced, suspenseful mystery. (It's certainly not as vulgar as what Laymon was capable of, but it was still not something I like to read!) It was also intriguing to read a thriller set in Australia, where I live.
Of course, Mum had no idea I was already reading Richard Laymon by this stage. But as long as the "naughty stuff" was on the page and not on a TV screen, she tended to let it slide!
