volume one ★★★★

ahhh, this town is just so cozy... even if it's maybe being attacked by demon entities. but nothing that our magical book cafe owner and captain of the guard cannot protect against! tsukina is just so sweet, and i truly just love her as a mc so very much. and the magical barrier charms were just perfection. and when she invited him to heal in the spare room of the cafe? i was truly kicking my feet and giggling! holding hands in the market? then when il took her to the aurora festival? just perfection, both story and art! but yeah, i really enjoyed this second installment. i am curious where volume three will go, since this ended so cute and tidy!

Soooo, the drawing is still pretty, but the story took a sudden shift.
While I remeber complaining on how in the first volume anything barely happens, now it was like everything escalared too quickly..it was like having 10 volumes worth of material compacted into 1. 😅

The threat of a monster attack that was the cliffhanger of the previous volume is dealt with, no thanks to the interference of the (known) savior, who hangs uselessly on the prince. She endangers him, and causes a number of guards to be seriously injured, by standing directly in harm's way. Her charm spells are losing their effect, and as a result the prince demands that the savior learn at least one spell by the time the aurora festival starts in two weeks.

In the meantime, Il has been injured in the monster attack and spends some time recuperating at Tsukina's café. (In the guest room. At this point their relationship is painfully chaste, neither of them having mustered the courage to confess their love to the other.) The aurora festival will bring the saviors together in the same place, at the same time, and sparks are bound to fly!

The story could reasonably conclude here with . I rather liked how .

But otherwise, I'm not too impressed with this story. I agree with another reviewer or two who say that the major plotline was rushed and underdeveloped in this volume. I don't think the homey and epic-fantasy elements are balanced all that well, and things would probably go better if it stayed more firmly in one lane or the other.

The romance, presumably the story's big draw given the emphasis put on it, is tepid, and Il feels like just about anybody could fill his role as long as they were a bookworm. He also overlooks some obvious clues that Tsukina is a saint, for example that she can mass produce incredibly valuable protective charms, and that she is unaware of one of the major festivals that even the youngest child in their country would know about. (This used to be known as an "idiot plot" but is probably called something more appropriate today.)

As for the art, I like how Tsukina is drawn, and the café that is the mildly claustrophobic setting for a lot of the main couple's interactions is nicely presented. But the supposedly hot guys, including Il himself, are pretty bland, and the body poses and facial expressions in general are stiff and don't get close to creating the shoujo manga feeling that I would hope for. This volume had better quality paper than volume 1, and... well... that acted to the detriment of the art by better displaying just how mid-grade it is.

Isekai is an overcrowded and derivative genre, and this is nowhere close to being an exception to that. If I had a local library, that would have been a far better choice for reading this than paying for my own copy. It seems like the original serialization in text was popular enough to keep going after the major plotline that ended in this volume, and I've got the third one of these, so I'll get that far, at least. Two and a half stars, and it's drifting down.

I have not started a new book since the last one I read... so instead I'm reading manga ˚ ༘ ೀ⋆。˚

I finally got volume 2 and 3 of The Savior's Book Cafe Story in Another World and I could continue reading this cozy, adorable story about a woman who gets transported to a new world with creatures, monsters, and magic, only to say no at becoming the savior and instead opening a bookstore/cafe to pass her time. There's romance in this story and it's SO CUTE!!! Il is the captain of the guards of the royal family and one day he arrives to her bookstore to spend some time reading books and eating Tsukina's delicious food. He falls in love with her BAAAAD BAD BAD. He then wants to spend the rest of his life with her.

This second volume was fun! I adored the conclusion of... you could say, the first half of the story. You could read the first two volumes as one story arc because the third volume has a new plot beginning. Il and Tsukina were so cute in this volume *swoons*✧˚ ༘ ⋆。♡˚ So many domestic scenes between!!! Cooking, reading together, going shopping at the market and holding hands >>> They really are the definition of adorable.

I finished volume 3 too so let me write that review.

The Savior has arrived and is causing no end of trouble for, well, everybody. Tsukina, our other savior, is happy just to run her book cafe and spend time with Il. But when the former goes a bit too far, the latter may have to step in, even as it threatens everything she’s built for herself.

If there’s a concept in isekai that I do appreciate, it’s the chosen one who shows up and kind of makes things worse and needs to be put in check. We had inklings of this in the last volume, but that weed of crime bears bitter fruit this time out (sorry, too many Shadow radio dramas).

The Savior absolutely sucks, as spoiled a brat as you could ever want, and quite possibly Too Stupid To Live (to borrow a friend’s term), but possessing the power of a small nuclear arsenal. Needless to say, this proves a volatile combination.

A wolf attack nearly gets the knights killed thanks to her idiocy, which then leaves Il in such bad shape that he moves in with Tsukina to recuperate, so I guess it’s not all bad. It also forces the prince to learn a lesson about not being a colossal dumbass.

This part is fairly adorable - the relationship between Il and Tsukina is very low-key, even if Tsukina could really use a bit of a boost in the confidence department. It’s nice that they both decide to come clean on their own about their affections, despite fate conspiring otherwise.

Yes, Savior Prime gets a royal dressing down for her idiocy and eventually this leads to some serious problems during a festival. At this point, Tsukina has to make a choice about keeping her existence hidden and letting lives be lost, or revealing herself and telling Il that she was lying about her abilities. For somebody as desperate for a simple life as our heroine, this is no easy choice.

Tsukina and Il are a great couple and that’s why I rate this volume so highly; I think their dynamic is great. As for that meta comment she makes about shojo and who would ever want a 30-something heroine? Well, I do, Tsukina, thank you very much.

This manga’s not being recommended for the art, which is okay at best, and not very good at doing the action. The first part of the wolf attack and their design is okay and Savior Prime’s freak out is well done, but this is definitely a story first and art second type of book.

And I’m not sure that it needed to continue. This is an incredibly satisfying tale that spans two volumes and doesn’t especially need a third. There’s definitely a place that this could go after everything is said and done, and the idea they’re basing it on is neat, but it ends perfectly as it is.

4 stars - this is an all charm and sweetness based rating that has an adult heroine doing adult things and getting the guy. Heroics abound, but the quiet moments like stew and tea and books are what make this a good series, not the parts where it goes big.

Chef’s kiss ending. So sweet! Il is just an absolute CinnaRoll and I love how gentle the storyline is.

5, that would have been a great way to end the series, stars.

This series right here is exactly the kind of wish fulfillment women want!!

Truly, this is another excellent volume in this series, but I was SHOCKED and even audibly gasped with the developments in the beginning!! I had felt pretty confident when reading volume one that this series would stay a causal and romantic slice-of-life kind of vibe, but this volume definitely did NOT stay with that vibe!

Thankfully everyone was okay, but you could really feel the frustration and danger that was lurking around Il. I’m also thankful that the moment was short-lived and no serious injury happened to Il because I’m pretty sure I would have thrown my physical volume otherwise! LOL!

The moments that happened after this had me happy sighing though because while things are still fairly slow burn, I never expected Tsukuina to ask a pretty bold question that would lead them to grow even closer! *cue more happy sighing*

Speaking of her, I really liked seeing her struggle unfold in this volume if she should tell Il that she’s the Savior. I think it added more relatability to her character because living peacefully and reading your favorite books all day really does sound amazing! However, I was really happy with the decisions she made even though it totally had me on edge because once again the volume took a dangerous turn!!

And once again, thankfully everything ended on a happy note with a DELIGHTFUL moment at the end! *happy sigh*

Indeed, this was another very good volume that I’m so excited to read more of!!

While I still adore Tsukina and Il, this volume was a tad underwhelming as compared to the first book. Things resolved a bit too quickly without any plot progression, simmering tension or build-up whatsoever.

This is a really cute series.

I gotta be honest, things are progressing much faster that I originally anticipated. I'm curious to see where the story goes next.

3.75/5 ⭐️

I love the whole premise of this manga - a middle-aged woman ends up in a fantasy world, creates a book cafe, and falls in love with a soldier. I mean, it's truly a unique storyline, and the artwork is beautiful.

However, with that being said, in this volume, everything happens so fast, and the ending gets wrapped up with a romance that, while the flirting is there, isn't really a romance, if that makes sense. They act like an old married couple with no feelings for each other besides their mutual love of books. Don't get me wrong, and I still love this volume; I just wanted so much more! This could have been fleshed out and made into three volumes. Also, this was a novel created into a manga, so I am curious as to how much is missing from the manga.

OH MY GOD!
description

How adorable of her trying to protect him, and offering to let him STAY OVER (in the guest bedroom >_> ). All fluff, but so worth it. The story is making massive progress with the situation of the villain now resolved, and I can't believe that there's another volume?! Like girl you defeated the villain you can rest now. But honey, she didn't have her eyes set on the villain. . . or should I say God didn't have his eyes set on the villain. . . it's set on the WORLD. Can't wait to see her worm her way out of this one.

The last 10-ish so pages were basically a "wrap-up" of our two love interests whole story... But directly after the end of the manga the publisher says "Story/Characters continue in volume 3, stay tuned!" It seems like the author intended to end the story here but eventually decides to carry on. I will be continuing but this was majorly jarring to read.

Rating: 4/5

Second read (Nov 27th 2023):

I swear if I ever find myself in the same room as that immature and spoiled saviour... Grrrr 😤😤😤 She really had to act up.. And just when we were making progress with IL and Tsukina's relationship as well! HMP

I wasn't expecting the prince to act the way that he did though 👀

This was lovely, and I think I'll just stop the series right here. Sometimes you don't need more than "they lived happily ever after."

This is a great balance of the most adorable romance, magic, and adventure. Il and Tsukina just dance around each other for most of the book and it's satisfying when feelings are finally confessed. The ending just fast-forwarded everything so that was unexpected!

oh my, that first savior really was a piece of work - good thing tsukina fixed the mess she made. And the progress of tsukina and il's romance is so sweet🥹 (tho a bit fast, but still sweet)

If I’d known how the second volume would turn out I probably would’ve skipped this series. It’s got so little substance. I was surprised to see a notice for another volume on the way. I’m not sure if I’ll buy it, at this point I’m thinking about returning vol 2. I just don’t know how much interest I’ll have in rereading this series.

3.5 stars. I liked a lot but this one didn't have the oomph and fulfill some of the potential promises if the first one that had me excited. It seemed like it took dramatic turns with parts of the story I didn't care about as much and softer, not as powerful turns with what I did. Uneven compared to the first one.

So this tied up the first arc. If you were going to stop reading the series, this would be a good stopping point. I didn't. lol It's pretty low key, low-stress. The next book seems to start getting stressful, though, so again, if you're looking to keep things totally happy comfort-comfort, it does wrap up nicely here.

I went on, though.
