3.5 rounded down for some truly ridiculous breast physics and male gaze trappings - I know not all yuri is written for women, but the balloon boobs and the fact that "sharing aegis" requires putting your hand on the other person's heart - which in this series is apparently located around the nipple - is a bit much.

With that caveat, Semelparous is darkly fascinating. In the story's world, people who can manipulate a power known as aegis fight in the interspace between worlds, where giant monsters known as kaiju try to break through to our world. Don't let the name fool you - these are less Gamera and more a cross between the Titans from Attack on Titan and the Hollows from Bleach, and they're hiding a truly disturbing secret inside of them. The story follows young bulwark (soldier) Yorino, whose best friend Haruka is killed defending her on their first foray into the interspace. Yorino joins the bulwarks anyway and is pared with Youko, who very much has a crush on her. The yuri is really window dressing to the science fiction/horror blend that is the story, and if you're easily disturbed, I'm not sure I'd recommend this. But if you're into dark sci fi, this is an interesting one, and it stands to go some interesting, albeit upsetting, places. I didn't expect to like it, but I think I may need to keep reading future volumes.

You, the young hero, stands over the corpse of your best friend. You two have trained side-by-side to battle kaiju, interdimensional titanic humanoid invaders, and join the ranks of an elite squad of warriors called bulwarks. Now your best friend is dead at your feet, and you are about to be crushed by a kaiju.

Then the greatest bulwark of all, an ample breasted, leggy, eighteen-year-old beauty with long dark hair and glasses, swoops in and sweeps you away to safety. She needs your power, your aegis, that warriors offer one another to bolster them in battle. You nod, you’d do anything to defeat the kaiju. You’ll give her all the power you have. So you channel all of your aegis into your right hand and reach out…

… and grab her giant anime tiddy.

And honestly, I dig it.

The story is really cool. I'm intrigued by the concept of the parallel universes, the kaiju, and the Bulwarks. But the art feels very much catered to the male gaze - mostly because of the way each character's boobs are drawn.

But I'll leave room to hopefully be pleasantly surprised by the story in future volumes.

As is true for a handful (well, more than a handful...) of manga I own, I can't really remember why I bought this, but it probably had something to do with boobs. The manga is published by Seven Seas, but not their Ghost Ship imprint. It's a yuri manga, which makes some sense since I recall Seven Seas either began as a yuri publisher or just published a shitload of yuri ages ago. I think my Strawberry Panic omnibus is Seven Seas. But... so is my Scientific Railgun manga, which is... dubious.

It appears this manga was originally published in Japan in 2020, so it's the same year Kaiju No. 8 started. A possible coincidence, but semelparous bears more than a handful (superficial) similarities. I also see Shingeki no Kyojin and Gantz. I want to say there's a sense of Tokko here as well, but I simply can't assume that was popular enough to matter. I don't know and/or can't tell if the yuri elements were influenced by anything in particular. I want to say the way Aegis transfer works is inspired by Mana in Fate/, but that's maybe a stretch.

Is this a good manga? Yes. Probably. From what I saw when looking for further volumes, it seems to be really short. Three volumes? So either this will be a tight little story, or else it will have a non-ending. We'll see. As it stands right now, the action scenes are pretty good, though I don't really love how "clean" the cuts through the kaiju are. And I definitely don't like how samey the kaiju are in appearance. There's some effort put into the lore, which is good because it feels like a "legitimate" manga instead of an "excuse plot" to get the girls in skintight, latex-looking bodysuits and having them lez out. The fact that kaiju are connected to humans in the main universe seems like a plot idea for a bigger/longer series, so we'll see how that plays out. Right now, I'm anticipating Titan-Shifter shit, or like Yorino fighting a kaiju powered by the alternate-universe Haruka, or herself, or something.

Does this manga work for ass and titties? Yes. Definitely; see below. Having said that, sometimes the boobs are too big and round that they look like maybe they're filled with helium. It's like a One Piece thing; I could understand if others might not find them "hot" in their absurdity, as sometimes I feel indifferent to their appearance.

Thus far, the yuri isn't too pronounced. Yorino was close to her friend Haruka, but possibly just a tight friendship / surrogate-sisterhood thing. Youko definitely gives off "groomer" vibes, so we'll see how that goes. As of the end of the volume, Yorino doesn't quite seem like she's too into gay sex, but she's more open to the idea than when she first met Youko. We'll see how that goes, as well as if there's any hetero netorare bullshit to derail us.

I brought this series randomly after just looking at the cover. It looked intriguing. It wasn't until I brought the 3rd volume before reading the series that I was worried, especially with how graphic the cover was, however, even though there is some evchi aspects in this volume they are not over the top or just thrown in for the sake of it so it's all good for now....
The actual story isn't anything special, certain aspects very generic, but I shall reserve final judgment until the 3 volumes I have currently are read.

This was not the monster killing manga I wanted it to be. It started to feel all over the place, gaps in the story and boob grabbing that's supposed to pass for power transference and yuri all in one.

This manga packs a punch! Excellent worldbuilding, gorgeous art, likable cast of characters. And the plot twist at the end made me gasp! I wouldn't really say this is yuri so much as sci fi but it is amazing. Looks like it's only going to be three volumes and that's a shame.

Semelparous vol.1 is an interesting beginning in a new sci-fi, action packed yuri romance. The premise and art style are good, and I am very much excited to see what comes next!

The book are interesting as well as a lot of explaining which is good to understand the world and line of work of the Bulwarks. I'm kind of excited when volum 2 will be released.

Basically yuri Kaiju No. 8 but with a world building premise that's almost too good for the series.

I finally started this series due to a friend's recommendation, and I was surprised by how intriguing it was, even though it feels like a fan service, ecchi series. I'm not always opposed to it!
