Okay fantasy story but riddled with typos and technical errors...
This is the author's first writing attempt; however, it's clear there was no editor involved in the process. I give the fantasy story creation 3 stars, but the book is riddled with editorial errors that significantly reduce the reading pleasure and should have been cleaned up before this was released. Even though the story is a fantasy, the author's writing must reflect a command of the English language and an accurate timeline of story events. That's not the case here. The story did draw me back to finish reading it in 2 sittings. I would be irritated if I had actually paid for this story, but it was free so that's something.
There are continual errors in missing words, incorrect prepositions, who vs. whom, and a constant barrage of technical errors that the reader must trip over in every chapter so it's not a smooth read. Examples: Her stepdad took her cell phone away, and in the next chapter she's using her cell phone. Then the following chapter he is giving her phone back to her. She's running away from Jacob in the woods wearing a pair of flats and while jumping over a stream she realizes she is barefoot. If you lost your shoes running in the woods you would know it right away. Balloons are not permitted in hospitals due to latex allergies. She raised her hand to her face and realized the years of callouses she'd acquired were gone. The kid is 18, how would she acquire callouses on her hands? I'm 65, have lived a working class life and I don't have any callouses on my hands. Rubric is not a suitable substitute for Syllabus. The story does not match the climate in North Carolina at each of the times it is commented upon. Gardenias do grow in North Carolina. Puppy 'Dennis' is 'struggling to stay above water' so they take his stick and throw it again? Really? It goes on and on.
The one great line from this book is 'desserts are stressed spelled backward'. I'll use that in the future to justify ordering a dessert! (Except the verb would be 'is' as desserts is a collective noun.)
