Rate this book
With shades of It’s a Wonderful Life, one man must face his past to find his future this Christmas.

In the last year, George's life has drastically changed. The formerly homeless veteran now has a job he likes, a family in the residents of Darling, VT, and for the first time in years, a home. But while his present is good, he's still haunted by the past, a past that appears shortly before Christmas when the older sister of his brother-in-arms hunts him down and finds him in Darling, working at the Ladybug Garden Center.

Amy’s looking for closure for her family after her brother's death in the Middle East, but the serious man she finds working in Vermont doesn’t resemble the soldier she remembers from years before. This man is hardened and yet somehow fragile, too, and in her desire to find out what really happened to her brother, she learns more about George than she ever expected.

With a little Christmas magic and the whole town supporting them, can these two bruised hearts make a future together?

George is a veteran that hasn't had the easiest of times coming back home after his time being deployed. With some heavy burdens in his past George has spent a lot of time being homeless since his return and just within the past year with a helping hand has started to get his life together. Working steadily at the Ladybug Garden Center in Darling, VT and getting his own apartment George has finally found some friends and gotten his life on track.

Amy is the twin sister of George's good friend that died in combat and when she shows up at his new job just weeks before Christmas George isn't quite ready to face the past. Amy’s looking for closure for her family after the loss of her brother and only seeks out answers from George on just what happened. When the two confront the ghosts that haunt George they find themselves ruining their own friendship with the possibility of it becoming more now that the past is at rest.

Deck the Halls by Donna Alward is a contemporary romance novella that is part of the Darling, VT series. Each book in the series has featured a separate couple so they may be all read as standalones books if choosing to do so. I did notice that some of the previous characters are involved in the current book though so there would be updates on previous couple for those fans of the entire series.

This book really touched on the tough subject of veterans and just what happens to them when they return home and what is like to live with the horrors that they have seen while serving. I couldn't help but feel for George as soon as I learned his story and just wanted to give the man a hug so of course I was hoping for a happily ever after for him. With George and Amy sharing a past it was easy to see that the two would be drawn to one another and Amy be the one to help George fight his demons and move on.

Overall, this was a lovely little heartwarming novella that felt realistic not featuring just the latest good looking couple but people with real problems in their lives.

I am a huge lover of the Darling, VT series and was doing cartwheels when I discovered George was getting his story. And Donna Alward doesn't hold back: this story may be fairly short, but it touches your heart and I may have wiped a tear or two away as I made my way through the entire book in one sitting.

description

If ever there is a man who deserves a HEA it's George Reilly, a wonderful, gentle, proud man who fought for his country, lost everything, but with the help of Darling's finest, the Gallaghers, has been given a second chance. Things are meandering along for him quite nicely until Amy Merck arrives in town, the twin sister of his best-friend whose death he blames himself for, and old feelings are reawakened, good and bad.

"I wish it hadn’t taken fifteen years for me to tell you that it’s okay and that...I don’t forgive you because there’s nothing to forgive."

This is a story of two individuals who have lost, are still hurting and suffering years later, but together can bring a degree of closure and begin to help one another heal. Some aspects felt a little speedy—I think had this been a full length book then some real emotional issues could have been run with—and because of it's shorter length Amy came over as heavy handed to George's PTSD on occasion, but that can be forgiven as I did enjoy them together.

"...it’s you I want. All of you, not just the easy bits."

George stole my heart from the moment we were introduced in the first book of the series, and he did so all over again.

4 - "You gave me a wonderful Christmas gift." Stars!

We return to Darling, Vermont for a little seasonal catch-up, and Donna Alward gives George Reilly his deserved Christmas wish, with a second-chance encounter turning into the love he doesn’t believe he deserves.

He was a stranger… yet not.

This is one of those novellas that you wish was a full length book, because if you have read the previous three books in the series you will know that George featured quite a lot in them as a secondary character and you could just tell he had his own story to tell, especially in Aiden and Laurel’s book; Somebody Like You, where he started out as the homeless guy, that they looked out for, and by the end of the third book in the series, he had himself a job, accommodation, and a place in the town as someone worthy and not just someone you avoid eye contact with as you walk past them in the street.

"You were his best friend… Now you’re my best friend."

Amy Merck comes back into George’s life 15 years after their last meeting, her brother, was his best friend. They served together, but only one of them returned, and due guilt, PTSD and a few other issues, he never kept in contact with her or her family. Amy is looking for answers, and she’s not leaving town until she can get George to open up about her bothers final, days, hours and minutes. Something that George is reluctant to do, because revisiting those memories take him back to a time he would rather try and forget.

"There’s nothing to forgive."

Second chances at life, second chances at love, redemption, forgiveness and learning to accept the things we cannot change, but to live our lives for those who have been lost, are the main themes that ran through this novella.

"You judge yourself far harder than anyone else does… Things mean nothing to me. Character does. And you’ve got that in spades."

Which with the Christmas Season being firmly in the forefront as well gave this story lots of emotional depth, which gave this reader a few smiles and a few tears, and the hope that the author will take us back to Darling, VT for more stories in 2018, because I really do love everything about this series.

When I read Somebody Like You - #1 in the Darling VT series earlier in the year, I wrote a very brief review of it, stating the character George really appealed to me. And... I wanted his story. A little comment then showed underneath, Donna saying I should watch out for October because his story was on the way. And so it is.

George is a returned service man who for a long time was down on himself and was living on the street until a few people in Darling VT really saw him and offered him a helping hand. Which to his credit he took. Yet he is still riddled by regret and no small amount of survivor guilt.

Into the mix arrives his best friend's twin sister - Amy. She has come looking for answers to what went down that day when her brother was killed in war.

What follows is a heart warming Christmas story of reaching out, giving, hope and love. Things move along for George, he has already come a long way but there is more ways to travel. Towards the end it tugged on my heart strings.

There is no quick fix, but there is promise of good things to follow. George and Amy are just beginning. If the Darling VT series continues... well I hope Amy and George poke their noses into other peoples stories and update us.

George is recently recovering from some very devastating blows, pushing his past further away from him and focusing on his future. When Amy shows up searching for answers for her family and her twin, George is unable to leave the past buried. Facing his fears and risking his heart, he bears his soul to Amy and learns some new Christmas traditions with her.

George and Amy is an adorable couple, who are learning to trust each other while sharing painful secrets, and finding love along the way. They are the couple that the whole town watches as they slowly fall head over heels for each other; and the towns has it figured out before they do. I want to read more and more about George and Amy; I could have read for hours about them. Darling, VT has a very charming quality, readers enjoy traveling back as much as possible! Anyone looking for a cute, sweet, holiday romance, grab a copy of Deck the Halls, its a great way to spend your afternoon!

I love second chance romances and if any two people deserve a chance at love again it was George and Amy. I fell in love with George with every snippet revealed about him in the past books and with every hard earned grin or half smile that was coaxed out of him. He was a man with deep hurts that came from a deep heart.

He’d seen enough ugliness to appreciate beautiful things, no matter how small.

It’s nearing Christmas time in Darling and George has finally started to feel almost human again. He’s working alongside Laurel, has his own apartment now and has even started to make friends. Things aren’t 100% but for the first time in 13 years, George is able to breathe a bit easier, his past no longer weighing him down with no end in sight.

But one look at Amy Merk and all the memories that haunt him come flooding back.

Amy has been searching for the last link to her twin brother that she has and when she finally finds George, she’s determined to get him to provide her some closure. Thirteen years ago, George and Ian were inseparable but after Ian’s death, George dropped off the face of the earth and the not knowing how Ian spent his last moments has slowly been eating away at her.

”Oh, George. How did we get to be so broken.”

But seeing George again has Amy rethinking her own demands and instead she finds herself giving George a chance to finally put the past to rest. This was a sweet love story that springs from tremendous loss but also inspires hope and forgiveness.

What I liked:
George and Amy were really great characters. They were broken but resilient in their instinct to survive. There was a lot of sadness but it was balanced out with the genuine blossoming of their friendship and than later on, their love for each other.

Also it was a cute bonus to see Laurel and Willow, both sporting adorable baby bumps.
I only have one gripe and that was the rushed ending. Given their recent separation, it felt like too much happened off page that the ending felt incomplete, almost. I wish we’d gotten more time with George and Amy as a couple.

My Review:

Deck the Halls was an unexpectedly melancholy and angsty read - but then, not everyone is chasing rainbows, baking cookies, or watching for Santa during the holiday season. The emotive storyline spotlighted the complications of unresolved grief, the niggling discomfort of unfinished business, and second chances; and occurred during a two-week interval leading up to Christmas. I had been curious about the character of the homeless man known as George in the earlier books and was thrilled to see his emergence and marked improvements due to large part to being forcefully rescued and craftily manipulated into gainful employment and daily interaction by his new employer, who also assisted him in finding housing and VA services. However, his forward momentum was put in jeopardy when the twin sister of his fallen best friend suddenly made an appearance and needing closure for her family, Amy pursued George for information about her brother Ian's death in Iraq, which being the antecedent of George’s downward spiral, opened a Costco super-sized can of worms. Forcing him to deal with the heaviest of issues and a return of his nightmares was distressing, although Amy was also having a positive influence and impressing on George the difference between existing and living. Old sparks re-ignited, but the holiday season was not full of delicious eggnog, caroling, or party games for this couple.

What a beautiful touching story. This is my first book I've read by this author but I see this is a Christmas novella which is part of the Darling,VT series. I can't wait to read the other books! Darling,Vt is a darling, picturesque town. Your neighbors are your friends and people want to look out for you and help out. After 15 years of being a homeless veteran George is ready to try to get his life back on track. Feeling worthless and unworthy he is trying to move on and overcome these feelings. He now has a job and feels so blessed to have been befriended by a local police officer and his wife who offers him a job in her floral nursery. He feels good that someone is willing to take a chance on him. But then........ he feels like his past has caught up with him just when he was getting back on track. His best friends, twin sister finds him and wants to ask some unsettling questions they have about how their son died. He was crushing on her 15 years ago but now he is a haunted man ever since his brother-in-arms died next to him. He feels responsible. He must face his past to ensure a healthy and healing future . This book will make you feel good if you are down, it's a real pick me upper.

"Deck The Halls" by Donna Alward

My Thoughts.....

A well thought out contemporary romantic novella that is part of 'The Darling, VT series with some undercurrent of personal struggles. What a story this was as it presented 'the tough subject of veterans and what could happen when they return home only to have to live with the horrors what had happened will they were away serving our country.' This is definitely one of those stories that will touch ones heart. I liked how this author was able to get George who was a 'wonderful, gentle, proud man who had fought for his country, lost everything suffering from PTSD had finally been given a second chance. What will happen as the twin sister of his best friend [Ian] Amy Merck arrives and reawakens old bad feelings that had been so close to him? For George had blamed himself for years over Ian's death. Will these two [George & Amy] be able to finds some degree of closures and be able to help one another? With each other needing so much healing you will have to pick up "Deck The Halls' to see how this heartwarming emotional novella that will put you in a holiday seasonal mood.

Donna Alward is one of my favourite authors and Darling, VT is a favourite romance series, so I was thrilled to read DECK THE HALLS! This book has a gorgeous cover and can easily be read as a standalone. This story of secrets, tragedy, trust, and second chances is perfect to read during the Christmas season or anytime you want a great story.
George is a veteran and has come upon hard times, but things pick up for him in Darling. He gets steady paying work at Ladybug Garden Center and he starts to feel better and has a home. Then someone who knows about his past comes to town.
How will this turn out? Will George leave town? Will Amy leave town? Will George and Amy become friends? Can they work things out?
Although I did not want this story to end, I could not put the book down until I was finished. I highly recommend DECK THE HALLS and give it 4.5 stars!

Thanks to Donna Alward, NetGalley and Swerve for a digital ARC of DECK THE HALLS and allowing me to write an unbiased review.

Bah humbug! While I love getting books before they are published in order to review them I H.A.T.E. reviewing Christmas books in September/ October, especially one after the other - note to self don't request them next time, d'oh!

I enjoy the Darling, VT novels so I was keen to read this novella set at Christmas, apparently loosely based around the film It's A Wonderful Life (which I have never seen) this concentrates on ex-soldier George who, until a year ago was a homeless man living on the streets (if that isn't an oxymoron). Anyway George is turning his life around but he still lives a very spartan life, almost like a monk, haunted by the death of his best friend Ian in the Middle East on a mission.

Amy is Ian's older sister, she has travelled to Darling, VT to see George and ask him to explain to Ian's family how he died, they don't want to blame, they just want closure.

Can George move past the memories of his friend's death and overcome his low self-esteem to find true friendship and love at Christmas?

This was a pleasant enough novella, slightly too saccharine for my tastes although kudos for not giving George and Amy a Hallmark "and everyone lived happy ever after, the end" ending.

Although it is set in Darling, VT it would be easy to read this novella as a stand-alone.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Don't you just love a review for a Christmas story with Halloween artwork on the page? I just think it's so funny. I was going to change the art work to match the fact that I'm reviewing a Christmas story but decided to keep it because it made me laugh.

I was so happy when I saw Deck the Halls come up for review. I have been really enjoying the Darling, VT series by Donna Alward. She's a newer author for me and I'm so glad that I started reading her.

Have you ever read about a character who isn't a main character and seems to be there only for the interactions of the main characters but for some reason you are drawn to them and hope you get their story? Well that's how I felt about George. He's one of those characters that yelled really loud at you even though he was only a supporting character.

I so badly wanted his story!

Imagine my surprise when I saw who Deck the Halls was all about? I was thrilled, here was one of my favorite themes (Christmas) with a character (George) that often made me think of him even as I read other books, come together!!! I was so happy and I just couldn't wait to read it!

If you haven't yet started this series (Darling, VT) get to it. It's a wonderful series with good, slightly flawed and damaged characters. It's like a Hallmark movie in a book.

Deck the Halls turned out to be everything I love in a Christmas story. You meet George in Somebody Like You and like I said, you want his story. He's one of those characters that you can't help but feel for. He's so down on his luck, you are so happy his life is coming together again. Amy might put a wrinkle in his now calm, pretty happy world, but I think it was needed.

You can't really heal until you face what you're healing from.

I'm guessing by now you kinda get the picture that this is a very emotional story. I did find myself tearing up now and then. I can tell you that the author did a wonderful job on George's story and that you'll be so happy (and a little sad) to read it.

Deck the Halls is what Christmas is all about!

George's story in the first book in this series was one of the more enjoyable parts of the series for me and I'm glad he got his own book. This story is quick and short but the message is very powerful and moving; it really captures the essence of Christmas as a season for new beginnings and will leave you in a reflective mood.

George Reilly returned from war a broken man who had lost everything, weighed down the horrors he witnessed and the guilt that he came back alive when many of his friends did not. After years of aimless drifting, he found a part of himself with help from the Gallaghers. Now with a job and a roof over his head, it's time to face his past, even if not by his own choice.

Amy Merck has mourned her brother for the last fifteen years, but losing him also cost her one of her close friends and now that she has found him, she is determined to get the answers that have eluded her for so long.

For George, reliving his past could destroy all the progress he's made and set him back by a lot, but it's also the only way he can move on. While Amy understands this, she also needs closure and is willing to give him all the time he needs.

This story is a tear-jerker and will have you rooting for George and Amy to finally find healing for the wounds that have been bleeding for so long even as they find love along with the healing and closure they need. My only complaint is that the story was not long enough to do justice to the emotional depths it plumbed.

Deck the Halls; A Darling, VT Story

Loved this book from beginning to end. It was beautiful, moving and touching.

George Reilly was getting his life back together working at The Ladybug Garden Center. He loved it there. When one day Amy Merck came to the lot, and brought memories of his old life back. The ghosts of his past he would rather forget. He was stunned to say the least. He couldn't talk to her, and not remember what happened to Ian her twin brother. It was because of him he didn't come back home.

Amy searched for George to get answers for her parents, and herself. The only thing was she shocked him with the way she showed up. She would stay in Darling to talk with him. She needed the closure.

What happens between Amy and George well you will need to buy the book to find out.

And also the others in this series:

While this book is part of the Darling VT series it can totally be read as a stand alone holiday novella. Fans of the series will recognize George as the homeless veteran that Laurel helped in book one. George suffers from PTSD and has never been able to face the family of his fallen teammate. He has in fact blamed himself for years over Ian's death. So when Amy, Ian's twin sister, arrives in Darling it is all he can do to talk to her. Amy is looking for closure regarding Ian's death and hoping George can give her that closure. But perhaps George and Amy also need each other to heal.
Donna Alward has written the perfect heartwarming story to get you in the holiday mood.

As this series has progressed, I have become more and more intrigued with George Reilly and how he ended up on the streets of Darling, VT.

This Christmas novella was perfect for me.

Learning more about George was both heartbreaking and uplifting. He has dealt with so much more than I ever thought, and when that past comes to find him in Darling, my heart hurt for him.

But that past was just what he needed to confront to move on.

I don't want to give anything about about who and what happens, as this is something the reader needs to discover for themselves, but believe me, you won't be disappointed.

Deck The Halls was a sweet story, just in time to start getting me into the Christmas spirit.

Can't wait to see where Ms Alward takes us next.

Deck the Halls embodies the true spirit of the holiday season. Donna Alward flawlessly combines the themes of community, charity and love in this poignant holiday story set in Darling, Vermont. George Reilly is one of my favorite characters in this series. George played a pivotal role in Somebody Like You, and his story intrigued me. I was so excited that he was featured in Deck the Halls!

George is a veteran of the Iraq conflict. His best friend Ian Merck was killed in action. The reality of Ian’s tragic death hit George hard; his survivor’s guilt plagued him and sent him into a downward spiral of loneliness and despair. He disengaged from life and lived on the streets until Laurel and Aiden Gallagher took an interest in him and helped him get a job and an apartment.

Ian’s twin sister, Amy Merck, has travelled to Darling to speak to George. Her family needs closure-any details about their son’s death would ease their minds. Amy and George were attracted to each other and shared a few steamy kisses before George’s last deployment. Will George open up to Amy?

George and Amy are wounded souls. Their wounds are not visible, their scars are on the inside. George blames himself for his friend’s death while Amy’s marriage fell apart when she couldn’t conceive. My favorite scene takes place at a holiday fundraiser when Amy and Willow Gallagher have a heart to heart talk. Amy mentions that George doesn’t see that he is a part of the Darling community Willow uses the words strength and courage when she talks about George. This conversation inspires Amy to show George the true meaning of Christmas. The last few chapters of this book are exquisitely written; the conversations are honest, poignant and witty and the charming characters will steal your heart as the community rallies to show one of their own the true meaning of Christmas.

Deck the Halls made me laugh and cry—and most of all it reminded me to give back to my own community. Thank you Donna Alward for a fabulous read! Can’t wait for the next Darling novel

A very good story about two people trying to move forward in their lives. One George is a veteran and is dealing with PTSD along with guilt over men that he fought with that did not come home. After years of wondering he has finally found a job at a nursery. He has been making progress but is still haunted by one soldier’s death. That solder’s sister Amy who has been dealing with the loss of her marriage and her ex has now totally moved forward from her with his new wife who is expecting their second child. Something she was wanting with him but had never happened. Now hopping to move forward in her life and to help her parents she would like to know how her brother died. After months of searching she has tracked down the one person she knows, would help her but is turned away the first time she comes face to face with him. Realizing her mistake she goes into the next meeting softer and gentler seeing that George is not the same man she met years ago. He is different. Something in his eyes. George also is seeing and listening to the story that she is telling him and is realizing that she is lost like himself. Not wanting anything but answers can these two people actually help each other and be their own Christmas gifts to each other. Read this wonderful story about being lost and finding your way back to life once again. I got this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

This is a very moving, emotive festive story and if you are touched by such stories, I recommend that you have tissues at the ready when you read it!

Returning to civilian life after serving in the armed forces where he saw his best friend killed, George struggled to cope, becoming a homeless nomad until someone sees his potential, gives him support and employs him to work in the Ladybug Garden Centre, helping him start to turn his life around. It is there that the twin sister of his dead friend finds him. The last time her brother and George had visited her family home, she and George had connected. Now she realises how changed he is. She wants to know what happened to her brother and has been searching for George for years to find out and get some measure of closure for herself and her parents. George is reticent to discuss anything from the past which haunts him. Will reconnecting with his past help him heal?

This is a moving story of second chances, overcoming feelings of guilt and moving on to give true love the opportunity to develop and grow. It is a short but poignant festive story, touching on some difficult themes with care and consideration. I will definitely look out for more by this author in future!

I requested and received a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.

Deck the Halls:
A Darling, VT Holiday Novella
(Darling, VT #3.5)
Written by: Donna Alward

George Reilly hadn’t celebrated Christmas in almost fifteen years. There were
reasons why he hadn’t been celebrating; but there was also a reason why he was celebrating this year. This year he was ready to give it a try.

Two weeks before Christmas Amy Merck showed up at the garden center where he worked. He recognized her as soon as he looked in her eyes. He wasn’t ready to have anything to do with Amy and he didn’t know if he ever would be. His reemergence to life had been a long time coming and he didn’t need Amy to push him back into his own dark world.

This book contained a lot of emotion and angst and I found myself only wanting the best for George. He had so many layers and it took a lot for him to give Amy the information she wanted to know. Her intentions had never been to hurt him, only to give her and her parents closure about the loss of Ian. Darling, Vermont however seems to bring people together.

There is a lot for George and Amy to sort through but if they talk and take time to understand where each of them comes from they will be able to move forward as a couple.

While I was immersed in Deck the Halls by Donna Alward, I kept thinking that this was a brave topic for a romance and that alone made me applaud Alward because most of us take the easy way out when finding a subject for romances. Given the fact that the male main character was a homeless vet just months prior to the novella’s beginning, the story could have easily gone maudlin, a trap that Alward avoided. And, both George and Amy are older characters 40 and 37, which isn’t in the typical age range either, so the story was far more mature with characters showing more depth, even in the confines of a novella.

Donna Alward is a new-to-me author but this blurb had me at Its A Wonderful Life, my all-time favorite Christmas classic movie.

I though the writing was good and the story kept me interested throughout. I appreciate that the author portrayed PTSD and survivors guilt in a true and honest manner but somehow managed to not let it drag the story down.

Overall this was a heartwarming read that has convinced me to pick up something else from the author sometime very soon.

Summary

With shades of It’s a Wonderful Life, one man must face his past to find his future this Christmas.

In the last year, George’s life has drastically changed. The formerly homeless veteran now has a job he likes, a family in the residents of Darling, VT, and for the first time in years, a home. But while his present is good, he’s still haunted by the past, a past that appears shortly before Christmas when the older sister of his brother-in-arms hunts him down and finds him in Darling, working at the Ladybug Garden Center.

Amy’s looking for closure for her family after her brother’s death in the Middle East, but the serious man she finds working in Vermont doesn’t resemble the soldier she remembers from years before. This man is hardened and yet somehow fragile, too, and in her desire to find out what really happened to her brother, she learns more about George than she ever expected.

With a little Christmas magic and the whole town supporting them, can these two bruised hearts make a future together?

Review

I am a sucker for happy ending Christmas stories. Deck the Halls is the first book I have read by Canadian author Donna Alward. I predict that it will not be my last ☺ I look forward to picking up the remainder of the series. I was surprised and happy to note that there were no issues reading this book without having read any others in the series. It is a stand alone story.

Deck the Halls begins with Amy driving down to Darling VT in hopes of connecting with George to finally get some answers regarding Ian’s (her brother) final moments. George and Ian were best buddies and stationed in Iraq together. Unfortunately, during a routine mission, an IED exploded and Ian did not survive. George was injured both physically and emotionally. He felt responsible for Ian’s death as he had promised Ian’s family he would look after Ian.

George has had it very rough since coming home and now, fifteen years later, he is finally on the path to recovery. He has a job he enjoys, a great boss and a home (though sparse of furniture) to call his own. Things are finally turning around. It is not an easy road to mental health recovery after going to war, but George is getting there, especially with the help of some very kind people in Darling. Then walks in Amy – Ian’s sister. And she wants answers. And answers bring up the past and all the angst that goes along with remembering the fighting over in Iraq. What Amy is seeking are the last moments of Ian’s life, some closure for her and her parents. One poignant part was when Amy lets George know he is not responsible:

“I wish it hadn’t taken fifteen years for me to tell you that it’s okay and that…I don’t forgive you because there’s nothing to forgive.”

George does not want the past disrupting all that he is built so he is not overly receptive to this intrusion into his orderly life. But as life often does, a curve ball is thrown and George must indeed deal with Amy. Over the next two weeks that Amy is in town, they re-connect and discuss all that happened, both in Iraq and since then. To read about George’s story was very emotionally draining and hard to hear.

What we learn early on is that there is “romantic history” between Amy and George, albeit a very brief romantic history…one kiss when they were both very young. But chemistry was there then and it is still there fifteen years later. That part of the story is also told very well. Some cute “first date” scenes with the usual awkwardness…and a bit of fun.

I loved how each of the main characters leaned on each other in their healing process. Very heartfelt and draining all at the same time.

And let’s not forget about the Christmas miracle. Oh…you must read the book to find out all about that ☺ It is worth the effort.

The cover art is great – I love the snow covered Adirondack chair next to a well decorated Christmas tree.

I found Deck the Halls a great introduction to the writing of Donna Alward. A definite heart warming, Christmas time book with depth and warmth. Just a few of the things I appreciate in a good book.

Terrific novella. George was a secondary character in the earlier Darling, Vermont, books. He is a veteran who lost his best friend in combat and blamed himself. After returning from his last deployment, George spiraled into PTSD induced depression, ending up homeless. When he landed in Darling, he drew the Gallaghers' attention, who, with kindness and patience, helped George get the help he needed. Now he has a job he likes, a family of sorts, and a place of his own. His somewhat fragile peace of mind takes a hit when that friend's twin sister shows up in Darling, looking for answers about her brother's death.

Amy has searched for George for fifteen years. The last time she saw him when the guys visited before they deployed, she and George connected. When Ian died, and George disappeared, she was left with lots of questions. Now that she found him, the changes in him shock her.

The development of George and Amy's relationship is full of ups and downs and incredibly emotional exchanges. When Amy first shows up, George feels blindsided by the memories she stirs up. He's quite blunt when he tells her that he doesn't want to talk about it and she needs to leave him alone. Amy isn't one to give up easily, and something in his eyes told her that he needed to tell her as much as she needed to hear. She also realized she needed to soften her approach. I loved seeing her show up the next day with lunch and a willingness to be there and not push for answers. Over the next few days, they rekindled their earlier friendship and began to exchange stories.

I liked how Amy shared her past and problems and the way it opened George's eyes. He wasn't the only one who felt broken, which made it a little easier for him to open up. My heart broke for him as George finally shared what happened and his feelings about it. The depth of his pain leaped off the page as he broke down in Amy's arms. I loved her statement, "I wish it hadn't taken fifteen years for me to tell you that it's okay and that…I don't forgive you because there's nothing to forgive."

I loved seeing the changes in George as he began to move forward. He and Amy spend a lot of time together, and the old attraction between them begins to simmer and grow. But both of them are exceedingly wary. Amy still suffers from her marriage's hurts and disappointments and is reluctant to risk her heart again. George has quite a few insecurities of his own, especially seeing a significant gap between his circumstances and Amy's. When George realizes how much his feelings for Amy have grown, he reacts by pushing her away. Some harsh words fly between them, and both retreat into their pain. While both kick themselves for over-reacting, neither is quite sure how to fix it. I loved the talk that Amy had with Willow, which gave her a starting point. My heart cheered for George as he learned what he meant to the people of Darling. The book ended on a huge emotional high as George and Amy found their way back to each other and took an honest and heartfelt look at the possibilities for their future. I loved the finale of Christmas Day with Amy's parents and what it meant to George.

I loved that this story didn't hesitate to show the reality of George's struggles upon his return home. Guilt, shame, and fear were his daily struggles, and successes sometimes seemed to be few and far between. I loved how his friends were so proud of him and wanted him to be happy. I especially loved Laurel's confidence in George and how she showed it.

FINAL DECISION: I loved this story. It was sweet and mature and full of heart. There is still more for George and Amy and I hope we see more of them or I will be mad that we didn't get an epilogue!

THE STORY: George Reilly has spent a year rebuilding his life after years of homelessness. Just when he has a job he values and friends in the town of Darling, VT, someone from his past reemerges. Amy Merck has come to George because the death of her brother has left her with questions and she wants George's help. During the Christmas season George and Amy rediscover hope and begin mending hearts that have been bruised and damaged.

OPINION: I made the mistake of starting this novella late at night. I usually can read a little of these stories and then pick them up the next day. Not this one. Despite the fact that this story isn't a suspense or a mystery or a great angsty drama, I was compelled to read every page before I slept.

The characters had such heart and depth for such a short story. I loved everything about it except for one minor quibble.

I thought this novella was incredibly brave for having a hero with PTSD who was also homeless for a long period of time. The story doesn't flinch from these aspects of George's reality. The shame, the fear, the daily struggles and the small successes. I loved the depth to this character who feels real and someone I would be happy to know.

Amy is a good match for George as she demonstrates that life and pain happens to everyone. She has different problems from George, but they have left scars on her as well.

The interactions between George and Amy are sweet, but not the sugary kind. These two are gentle and kind and good people. The entire story has great heart and I just felt so good about how things developed.

My only complaint is that the length of this novella means that the story is left going in the right direction, but not a complete happy ending. I hope that we see more of Amy and George in the future or I might grow more annoyed that we didn't get an epilogue or glimpse at the future outcome.

The heat of this novella is definitely on the sweet side.

WORTH MENTIONING: Kissing Bridge.

CONNECTED BOOKS:  DECK THE HALLS is book 3.5 in the Darling, VT series. This is a novella about a secondary character and can be read totally on its own, but fans of the series will be pleased with this revisit to Darling.

STAR RATING:  I give this book 4.5 stars.

4 stars -- I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.

I have never read any books by Ms. Alward before, and thus none in this series.  But I had no problems following along with everything.  I will say that if you are a fan of the series, I think you'll love this book too as many of the other couples appear in it (and it sounds like George made appearances in many of those books as well).

This was a solid Christmas romance, with a great redemption plot.  It touches on many serious subjects, from what it's like for returning veterans, survivor's guilt, homelessness, and the struggle to climb out of being homeless.  I especially enjoyed that last bit, as I think we forget that there's so much to overcome mentally and emotionally.  We really got to see how being homeless affected George's self-esteem and his sense of self-worth.

George was a bit of an oddball hero for me.  We meet him when he's so very damaged, and he came across quite meek a lot of the time.  Sometimes I just had a hard time getting a read on his personality outside of his damage, if that makes sense.

Amy, on the other hand, was very straightforward!  I loved how strong she was in so many things, how she wouldn't give up on George no matter how many roadblocks he tried to put between them.  And I liked that when they would have disagreements, she never held onto a grudge, and she was quick to try to see things from his perspective and adjust her expectations.  But at the same time, she wasn't afraid to push him a bit.  I also appreciated that she had her own bit of damage, but that she was a bit further along the healing path...not healed, but with more mental tools I guess.

All in all this was a sweet love story, with a very satisfying ending.  I was a bit bummed that there wasn't more to the "It's a Wonderful Life" bit that is mentioned in the blurb, but there was enough else in the story to make up for it.

Deck the Halls is a novella jam-packed with so many emotions and feels! I blew through this novella in one sitting and enjoyed every moment of it! This novella was a quick and charming story that put me in the holiday spirit!

I am not a veteran, so I do not personally know what it is like to be a veteran, but I thought this author did a good job at realistically portraying what it is like for a veteran to return home. There wasn't a lot of time to really delve into the PTSD that the characters in this novella faced due to the length of the story, but I was glad that the author still made it an important subject. George was a veteran and this story delved into how he was dealing with his PTSD since the war and other things that haunted him from his past. My heart really broke for George and I was really hoping he would get the love he deserved. George was a kind, gentle, and understanding man. I was so happy that he got a chance to get the happily ever after he deserved.

The romance in this story was adorable and extremely heart-warming. Amy and George had a rocky history, so they definitely had a lot of hurdles to overcome to make their relationship work. It was an emotional and rewarding journey to see them make their relationship work.

Overall, this was a quick and emotional novella. I would recommend this novella to anyone who is in the mood for a holiday novella with a heart-warming romance!

This is a short contemporary holiday romance about two people who desperately need closure and a second chance. I've always loved George and I was happy to read about him as a MC in this book. He's a very complex and interesting character who has grown through the series from a man who lost everything when he was discharged from the military and ended up homeless to a man who is slowly finding his way back. Thanks to some of the citizens of Darling (mostly the Gallaghers) George has been given a second chance. He's very slowly re-entering society and figuring out how to live again although he's still filled with guilt over his best friends death.

George is getting by until Amy, his best friend's twin sister shows up wanting to know more about the day her brother died. This sends George into a bit of a tailspin and feelings he's tried to forget have reawakened. Amy has questions about her brother's death and is dealing with a recent divorce as well. Both characters have been going through the motions and together they start to find a way to heal.

I really liked that George continued his slow evolution of healing and although I thought Amy was a bit pushy at times when it came to George's PTSD I also realize that this was a short book so things had to happen rather quickly. This was a wonderful comfort/healing story that will leave you with a glow and is perfect for the holidays.

A copy of this book was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
