The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This book here is all about J.R.R. Tolkien, a well-beloved and also well-known author. I believe everyone could enjoy seeing this author childhood dreams become reality through the pages of his amazing works so I totally recommend it!

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

J. R. R. Tolkien is one of the most recent books in the Little People Big Dreams series and is aimed at readers a little older than the original books. I absolutely love the illustrations in this book! They're amazing and perfectly fit the book. J. R. R. Tolkien lived such an interesting life and even though he faced loss and went to war, he made his dream come true. I love the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings so much and I'm so glad this amazing fantasy author got a place in this fabulous series! I didn't know Tolkien was originally from South Africa which is interesting to know. I hope children love this beautiful biography of such an amazing, inspirational author!

"...it doesn't matter where we go, what matters is that we enjoy the journey."

What a great book - even for big kids!

A trip to visit his grandparents in England changed the direction of his life when he was only 3 years old. He was never to return to his birthplace of South Africa. After leaving the countryside for life in a busy country, John Ronald Reuel’s dreams focused on nature and the tiny people he dreamed of living there. He even invented his own language to deal with loneliness. When he and his brother became wards of a Catholic priest, Father Francis, he was given a wonderful education and went to Oxford University to study English Literature. He never stopped writing stories about his imaginary world.

His childhood definitely shaped his life; it’s here he learned the power of imagination, the beauty of language and the strength of friendship.

John Ronald Reuel (J. R. R. Tolkien) is considered the founding father of modern fantasy literature. His life was filled with sadness and loneliness, but his daydreams saved him until he could make friends and share his stories. He turned his passion of creating a different world and language into stories which children today can use to launch themselves into another world, perhaps the catalyst for big dreams!

Beautifully illustrated by Aaron Cushley and simplistically written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, this is one of the Little People, BIG DREAMS books you’ll want to add to your collection.

I was gifted this advance copy by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Quarto Publishing Group, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

I just love The Little People, Big Dreams Series. This book is about J.R.R. Tolkien known all over the world for his Modern Fantasy books, the most famous being The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. These books are fantastic for children, especially someone with an imagination like J.R.R. Tolkien. It is so inspiring for a child to read a book that may describe the way s/he thinks and feels. Many children already grew up knowing about him and as adults went on to write their own Imaginative Fantasy Books. New children are going to grow up now and change the world by creating more wonderful books.

So, I already suggest these books to my library and to our schools. Having this book available is a great asset for children everywhere.

Beyond children though, I love reading these as an adult. I always learn things about a person I did not know before. J.R.R. Tolkien was born in South Africa. He had a twin brother who died. He moved at just 3 to England, after his father dies. His mother always read to him and sparked his imagination and love of books. Sadly, she died when he was a child. He went to live at King Edward’s School and found three special friends who also loved books, poems, and stories. They invented a Secret Society and J.R.R. Tolkien continued to make up secret languages. I never knew any of this. So, fascinating.

I really enjoyed reading about such a creative and imaginative child who as an adult becomes famous since everyone loves his books. So, he always got to Enjoy The Journey of Living Life.

Thank you, NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Frances Lincoln Children’s Book for a copy of this book. I am happy to have a chance to read and review it.

Thank you, Quarto Publishing Books Frances Lincoln Children's, for the advance reading copy.

I feel this book in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series is a huge improvement from the previous productions from the team. The books are awesome, perfect and precious but this one has set a higher level which I feel would be really difficult for the upcoming releases to surpass.

The illustrations are dreamy perfect. Kudos to the artist! You deserve all the love and praise from all over the world. Your work needs to be appreciated more. Hope your efforts are recognised far and wide.

Regarding the personality described, it is so well done focusing on the most important stages of the well loved writer's life.

You will love this book. I am so happy I got the ARC.

Again this collection provides us with a magnificent short biography, this time no others than Tolkien himself. Short, but this does provides enough information to discover the man and the basic ideas behind his work. Hopefully to make a whole new generation of readers familiar with him and make them read his works.

Of the four books I've read in this series, the one on Tolkien has been the cutest. The illustrator, Aaron Cushley, draws young Tolkien with such boyish vigor that you can feel Tolkien's imagination growing every time you turn the page. (I'm not a fan of how all adults have garishly cartoonish unibrows--a weird choice, since children don't.)

Vegara highlights Tolkien's life in broad strokes, and deals gently with the many deaths he experienced. The way Vegara handled Tolkien's losses in WWI was very tender, but might raise questions in young readers who don't understand war. I wished she had included something about his time working on the Oxford English Dictionary, but one must condense somewhere, I guess.

I haven't seen a picture book about Tolkien's life before, and this was a solid introduction to the legendary writer for young readers.

As a massive fan of Tolkien, this was the cutest book to add to my collection!😊

Firstly, the illustrations are so beautiful!!!!! Every page was filled with wholesome drawings of Tolkien and his life.

I love how this was a simple book summarising Tolkien's upbringing and passion for literature, with lovely illustrations and some facts.

Definitely recommend this lovely book if you're a fan of Tolkien!😊

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This little book tells the story of J. R. R. Tolkien, the great writer, and forefather of the fantasy genre. He's an incredibly fascinating person and author, I'm happy children have the opportunity to find out about his life and creations.

A good biography on the life of JRR Tolkien for young readers. This book doesn't shy away from the challenges he faced. Indeed page 1 presents the Tolkien family in mourning over the unexpected death of Tolkien's father. And the story thankfully offers a fuller picture of Tolkien's life beyond just the Lord of the Rings. The narrative includes reference to the other literature he wrote and his love of philology. The artwork is riveting as well.

I wish the story had placed bigger emphasis on Tolkien's Catholic faith. Passing reference is made to the Catholic priest who took care of Tolkien after the death of his parents, which is great! But the Catholic faith itself was the crutch he and his brother leaned on during that tragic time. His faith is the driving spirit of all his legendarium. To miss Tolkien's faith is to miss what made his life "outstanding" (the goal of this book series).

The book sums up the significance of Tolkien's life and literature by concluding "what matters is we enjoy the journey." After reading the book's otherwise faithfully crafted narrative, this conclusion hits like a missed note. Tolkien's own description of the purpose of the journey is:

“Children are meant to grow up, and not to become Peter Pans. Not to lose innocence and wonder; but to proceed on the appointed journey" […] "On callow, lumpish and selfish youth peril, sorrow, and the shadow of death can bestow dignity, and even sometimes wisdom” ("On Fairy Stories").

For Tolkien, the point of the journey is not whether or not it was enjoyable (few of Tolkien's characters ever go on journeys that could be described as "enjoyable" by any stretch). The point is that, however arduous it might be, the journey you've been appointed has the potential to shape you towards virtue and wisdom. Even towards becoming Human in the fullest sense. Tolkien tells this sort of story because this is the Christian faith.

I saw this on bookstagram and it was simply too cute to pass up. I needed it in my Tolkien collection.

This is a short children’s biography of Tolkien. It includes that he went into WWI and that his friends died, so it was surprisingly realistic and accurate. But it was also light, interesting and done age appropriate.

The illustrations are wonderful and colorful. This would be a wonderful way to introduce your children to Tolkien as it goes pretty in depth into his writing. Then you could move on and read The Hobbit to them!

5/5*, a nice little collectible for me.

By far my favorite of this little series so far. Maybe because of how much I love Tolkien, but also the artwork and tones and colors on the page are BEAUTIFUL. And the description of his creativity, ideas and writing was done so well. Love the scenes chosen for each page. Just so well done!

This is a fab picture book all about the life of J. R. R. Tolkien the author of The Hobbit and the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I don’t read fantasy so didn’t know much about the author apart from the fact he was friends with C. S Lewis. I learnt a lot about him, including the fact that he was born in South Africa, and was orphaned as a child, so his friendships were very important to him. I loved the illustrations in this book and really do recommend it for younger children. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for my digital copy via the NetGalley app.

These Little People, Big Dream books are great! This one is on J.R.R.Tolkien . When he was a child he had such an amazing imagination and would write little stories and dream of magical lands and creatures. He amazed all his Family and Friends with his stories and went on to become one of the greatest storytellers of all time. Did you know that the book The Lord of the Rings took him 12 years to write and is 9250 pages long. The book is full of wonderful illustrations !

My thanks to Quarto Group - Francis Lincoln Children’s Books for a temporary digital edition via NetGalley of ‘J.R.R. Tolkien’, written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and illustrated by Aaron Cushley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a recent addition to the publishers highly acclaimed ‘Little People, BIG DREAMS’ series of mini-biographies that introduces young readers, aged 4-7, to the lives of people who have excelled across various disciplines, including writers, artists, musicians, political figures and more.

I am always impressed how well Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara distills her subjects’ childhoods, including their dreams and aspirations, and demonstrates how these were carried into their adult lives.

Aaron Cushley’s illustrations were adorable and suited his subject, emphasising Tolkien’s love of nature. My favourite picture shows the adult Tolkien sitting under a tree while in the background Bilbo runs to join Gandalf and the dwarves as they embark on their journey.

The book ends with a biographical timeline accompanied by photographs and a suggestion for further reading at an older level.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings played an important role in my childhood since I first discovered ‘The Hobbit’ and that admiration has continued throughout my life.

This was another delightful addition to this excellent series and I have no hesitation in recommending it to parents, educators, and librarians as a way to inspire children to follow their dreams as well as to introduce them to nonfiction. It also would make a thoughtful gift for little ones, who may soon be introduced to hobbits, the Shire and Middle Earth.

This was an absolutely delightful children's picture book. If you love Tolkien and want to start your littles young, this is a great place to start. It gives a brief biography of his life [I learned several things that I didn't know] and his love of Middle Earth and will lead into more discussions about this amazing man and his fantastic fantasy world. The illustrations are just delightful and will add to the discussion for sure.

Overall, this was as close to perfect as a children's biography can get; the Little People - BIG DREAMS series is just delightful overall and this edition just makes it shine that much more.

VERY well done.

Thank you to NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Aaron Cushley - Illustrator, and Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

For most kids, this picture book version of J.R. R. Tolkein may not mean anything. They are probably too young to read Lord of the Rings. But the Hobbit is a great bedtime story, and they might have been introduced to it, and this is a great way to show them the young life of this oh so famous author.

We forget how war shaped many famous writers. In this case it was the First World War. It killed off a generation of young men, and Tolkien lost all but one of his friends during that.

Good introduction, as always to another famous person's young life.

Thanks to Edelweiss for making this book available for an honest review.

I have always wanted to read one of the Little People Big Dreams books since it is such an interesting manner to teach kids about famous people. Something I wish I could have gotten in my childhood.

Reading this book about J. R. R Tolkien's life in a very, very simple manner was insightful and cute. Having read a bit about his life, I knew most of it but I would definitely recommend this for younger readers so they can know the person that Tolkien was. More than the text of the book, the illustrations really worked for me. The colours, the portrayal of light in almost every panel was wonderfully done.

Thanks to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the ARC.

What I was looking for: I had seen other installments of these “little people, big dreams” books in the children’s section and wanted to see one for myself. Also, I wanted to learn more about J. R. R. Tolkien.
What I got: Such a beautiful book! The artwork is great, whimsical and captivating. Obviously, given the target age group and length, the life of J.R.R. Tolkien can only be a rough sketch. But it still gave a good overview and also mentions hard times, i.e. the death of both of his parents and WW1. A great book which I would gift to every young child.

Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for this free ARC.

This is my first book in the series "Little People, Big Dreams" I read and I could not resist it because it was about one of my favorite writers "J.R.R. Tolkien". I have to say that I loved the experience and the illustrations were so cute. A good book for little people indeed, in order to let them discover who is behind some of the greatest books of the fantasy genre.

OMG! A Little People, Big Dreams book about Tolkien, eek!

I love Tolkien's writing and I loved reading this children's book about the life of Tolkien.

There were a few differences in the facts presented within the book and Tolkien's timeline that I assume will be corrected prior to publishing. (length of time to finish LOTR and when his father died)

Other than that this was a fantastic book and my favorite LPBD book so far.

This is a lovely beginning biography of the father of modern fantasy. All the main points of his young childhood are hit: growing up, losing parents, getting married, going to war, etc. My favorite part of this book happens to be the illustrations. They portray the real person and his fantasy life in a very wonderful way. A stand out addition in this long running series.

This is my first "Little People, Big Dreams" read and it's a great introduction to J.R.R. Tolkein's biography. Illustrated by Aaron Cushley, this is a stunning book.

Beautifully written in a way that is suitable for young minds, Vegara tells this story in a flowing, easy to understand format. It doesn't shy away from some of the hardships Tolkein faced, especially as a young child. The story still feels "light" in spite of this and inspires the younger generation to dream big, which in my opinion is the purpose of this book series.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
