Rate this book
Easy, delicious, family-friendly recipes to cook at your next campout—whether that’s in the woods or in your own backyard!

The Family Camp Cookbook is a book for everyone who enjoys cooking and eating outdoors . Whether you need to learn how to pack your first cooler or you’re looking for kid-friendly recipes to enjoy after a day spent outdoors, you’ll learn how to plan, prep, and cook as a family when you don’t have the comforts of a full kitchen.

Start out by learning how to build a fire   easily at your campsite, or use the “sure-fire” guides for mastering any grill . With planning lists and prep steps for the recipes, you’ll quickly go from unpacking to firing up your first meal . The recipes inside include a wide variety of updated camp classics and dishes you’d never have thought to cook at camp . Cooking techniques range from live-fire roasting and foil-pack cooking to family-style dinners in the Dutch oven . (Yes, you can almost “set it and forget it” like a slow cooker if you know what you’re doing!) Chapters and recipes

Of course, there’s nothing quite like waking up in the woods…unless you don’t know how to make camp coffee . Not to tasty (and essential) beverages are included as well, from that rustic cowboy cup of caffeine to restorative fruit punches . There are even a few cocktails for the adults to enjoy by the fire a little later in the evening. No matter the size of your group or the time you have to spare, make your next adventure a delicious one !

~~~ I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review ~~~
The Family Camp Cookbook is full of fun, do-able camping recipes. The book's recipes are divided nicely (Breakfast, Lunch/Snacks, Dinner, and Dessert/Drinks.) It also contains tips, warnings, and is full of great photos.
My family has a small camper and my son is a Boy Scout- so we do quite a bit of camping- and we love it! We always cook when camping, and it's fun to try new recipes. I found several recipes in this book that I'd like to try- especially the dutch oven ones, as my son and the scouts use them often.
This would be nice to have to keep in our camper for future reference.
The Family Camp Cookbook is such a friendly and fun collection of tips and recipes for outdoor dining by Dr. Emily Vikre. Due out 29th March 2022 from Quarto on their Harvard Common Press imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
Wow, this was a really fun book. I grew up in a family who loved camping and RV'ing and some of my fondest memories of growing up were related to food and family. This book is full of funny (and some cautionary) bits of advice about camping and food, preparation and selection of tools and supplies, and getting the most out of enjoying the great outdoors.
I liked the accessible and logical layout. The introduction has some good tips for equipment and tools recommendations (the author doesn't mention brands, but does a good job of giving a balanced overview). The following chapters contain the recipes arranged thematically: breakfast, lunches (includes trail food on the go and dishes to prepare and eat in-camp), dinners, and treats & drinks. The author has included a LOT of recipes.. there are more than 75 at a rough count).
Recipes contain a description and background introduction, ingredients in a bullet list, and step-by-step cooking instructions. Ingredient measurements are supplied in American standard measurements with metric measurements in parentheses (yay!). The nutritional information is not included. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in text boxes in the recipes. The recipes themselves are fairly straightforward and are made for the most part with easily sourced ingredients. Many are very simple, none of them are overly complex. Recipes with pre-preparation to do at home are listed in a sidebar.
The photography is well done and abundant; most of the recipes are illustrated with photographs which are clear and well done.Vegetarian recipes are not marked as such. Many of the recipes which aren't vegan-friendly could be made plant based with a little experimentation. (Almost all of the recipes are streamlined and don't contain many ingredients).
This is a nice collection of recipes and even allowing for the fact that some of them are very similar to others in the same category, this will keep camping/outdoors fans going for ages. These are simple "everyday" recipes which are anything but boring. We tried several dishes and all of them were tasty and well written.
We're definitely going to try more of these recipes. Well written book, tasty recipes.
Four and a half stars. This is a solid recipe book which will be used. It would make a superlative housewarming gift to a friend or family member who enjoys camping as a hobby.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I was pleased for the opportunity to review [[The Family Camp Cookbook]] by Emily Vikre. I am a big fan of outdoor cooking and looking forward to taking out my tent this summer. The Family Camp Cookbook promises advice and recipes for cooking outdoors to help you learn to plan, prep and cook as a family. The book is broken down into five sections: The Camping Kitchen, Breakfast, Lunches and Foods on the Go, Dinner, and finally, Treats and Drinks.
From the beginning, the author makes it clear that the book is for car camping. She assumes that you have plenty of space and that weight is not an issue. As I am a hiker, I was a little bit disappointed by the sheer amount of goods that the author presumes you will be carrying with you. She recommends that you take one cooler for food storage and a second for drinks, along with a camp stove, two skillets, two pots, a camping dutch oven, camping knives, a cutting board and "utensils galore". The advice for starting a fire tells you to bring a "powerful fire starting back up", such as a blow torch. That said, the first chapter is full of good advice for choosing and maintaining your camp kitchen, which can be very useful even if you aren't planning on setting up camp directly next to your car.
The rest of the book offers a variety of tastes based on the author's experience with her husband and children. Sometimes I found it difficult, as a solo camper, to feel included in the warmth and affection that the author offers families who are braving the wilderness with young children. On the other hand, I did enjoy the repeated references to making easy cocktails for adults to be sipped while sitting around the fire.
The dishes are marked with a recommended cooking method: camp fire, cook stove, dutch oven and make ahead, which don't require cooking at the campsite. This breakdown makes it very easy to scan through the recipes to find the ones that suit your camping model. The recipes list their ingredients in both imperial volume measures and metric grams and litres, winning my heart forever. The text also makes it very clear that the recipes are not meant as diktaks but instead should be inspirational, open to changes and modifications to meet every family's needs.
The attention to detail is variable, however. Considering the author's childhood summers spent in Norway, the book is often oddly American, naming ingredients such as cheesy goldfish, frozen hashbrowns or summer sausage that are not easily found outside of the US. At the same time, the author is meticulous about offering gluten-free options and noting "if you are allowed nuts" every time she includes a recipe that requires nuts.
Although the weather is not suitable for outdoor cooking just yet, the recipes are all very tempting, with a wide range of types of food from sandwiches to pasta to meat and cheese boards to hearty rice dishes. I followed two recipes from the book for an overnight trip to a BnB: the cherry and pecan granola and the dried wild mushroom risotto (I used orzo, as "store-bought quick risotto mix" isn't something that my Nordic grocery store carries). Both dishes lightweight to carry, easy to follow and very flavourful.
If you are looking for tips as to how to reduce your packing and have a decent meal out in the middle of nowhere with only the food you carried on your back, then this is not the book for you. But if you are planning to fill up the back of the car and your emphasis is more on fun food for the kids than wilderness training, then The Family Camp Cookbook will encourage you to plan an excellent cooking experience. And if you are somewhere in the middle, there are plenty of tips and tasty ideas to motivate you to expand your repertoire.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for allowing me to read and ARC copy and review The Family Camp Cookbook. My thoughts are my own.
I have always camped. I grew up in a family who loved the great outdoors. We travelled extensively between California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Colorado to camp. Camping is an amazing adventure that requires a great deal of planning and intentionality. I remember watching my mom take weeks at a time to prepare for our next trip. I loved how she organized everything for our tent trailer and planned out the meals. Back in the 80s and 90s, meals were pretty simple with your standard egg/bacon or pancake breakfasts; sandwiches for lunch; and chili, soup or spaghetti for dinner.
My husband's family likewise spent a great deal of time camping. They travelled to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Yellowstone, Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota and more. With five kids in tow, they had some pretty incredible family adventures, like the time my mother-in-law braved Million Dollar Highway in Western Colorado in a full-size van and with trailer in tow.
Fast forward to today: we have camped with my husband's family multiple times. In the past three or four years, we have all gathered together near Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevadas. We implemented a rule that each family (there's five total who attend) take one nightly meal. Let me tell you, we have some creative chefs. We've enjoyed carbonara pasta, a shrimp boil, Mexican chicken, chili, bean soup and more. These are the traditions that create lasting memories.
I am a foodie, and my husband has worked in food and beverage for fourteen years. He also has his ciserone and sommelier certifications. We love food, and we love to cook. We also enjoy creating memories with the food we make.
I loved reading The Family Camp Cookbook. It reminded me of all the reasons why camping is so much fun. So much of these vacations/family trips are based around the table; food plays an important role of creating the camping culture.
Emily Vikre has produced a timeless cookbook with The Family Camp Cookbook. Part memento, part training guide, part recipe builder, The Family Camp Cookbook should be on any camper's reading list.
I particularly think this would be a great library addition for someone just getting into camping, a wedding gift or the camping family who is looking to expand their recipe repertoire. After all, it is easy to keep creating the same meals over and over and over again out of necessity and ease.
Vikre provides a wide range of recipes, some a little more adventurous than I like, but many that I look forward to trying. In addition, Vikre does a fantastic job at speaking to the cooking tools required for successful camping, whether it be roughing it or more glamping it.
Be on the lookout for this wonderful cookbook, releasing March 29, 2022 wherever books are sold.
I'll be honest, I am a very reluctant camper. You might say my idea of camping is a hotel without wifi...BUT the rest of my family love it. When the chance to camp with my best friend and their family came up, I signed up for two nights in a tent for the greater good - to make my family happy and spend time with one of my favourite women in the world. So when I saw The Family Camp Book come up on Netgalley, it seemed not only topical but a good idea to plan something delicious to have when we're camping.
The Family Camp Cookbook delivered what I wanted and more. I knew I was on to a winner with the hilarious camping fails I read about in the introduction,. What followed on from there was a range of interesting recipes accompanied by mouth watering pictures. I loved the versatility of the ways you can cook the recipes too - over the camp fire, a stove, a dutch oven or to take with you before you go. Thankfully, if you are a complete camping dunce like me, there's a handy list of equipment you need to bring. There's also helpful information on how to navigate your kids and the campfire as well as sample menus. The book is set out by the type of meal and breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners are all covered. Some recipes are certainly adventurous, others are fun and bound to please the kids and adults alike. When you have tucked the kids in for the night, there's a list of camping cocktails that you can guarantee I will be working my way through in preperation for sleeping in a tent! I got exactly what I needed, recipes that have me excited for our upcoming trip amd sure to generate delicious food orientated memories of our time away.
Thank you to Emily Vikre, Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Can I please go camping with Emily Vikre? Wow....this book. I usually loathe the fact that there's all this narrative in food blogs that you have to sift through for the advertisement placement before you can get to a recipe, but in this book, I read every intro to every recipe because I just love what Vikre has to say.
She starts with a lot of useful information about camping, camp cooking, and especially how to camp with your family (with a bunch of kids). She is very granola; she eats only real, healthy foods to the point that she makes her own biscuits in a skillet over a fire (from scratch) because Pillsbury tube biscuits have a bunch of weird ingredients in them. This is my kind of gal.
Her camping trips look fantastic, and she has the luckiest kids. Her recipes seem very doable for an amateur, even though they include a ton of ingredients. She tells you what to prepare at home and what to do on site for each (and tells you how to pack!). They are healthy and absolutely extravagant for camping, in my opinion, but I want to do it this way, too! Nothing is just plain---no hot dog on bun, hamburger, bacon and eggs. She gives you 7 different, much more delicious ways to cook your hot dogs when camping, including wrapping them in dough that you make right there from scratch and cooking them on a stick over the fire (like Aunty Anne's hot dog rolls).
She provides menu ideas for carnivores and vegetarians, complete with desserts and cocktails and fancy drinks for kids. This is going to be a camping game-changer for me. I borrowed the books from the library, but after taking too many pictures of recipes I wanted to keep, I realized I just really need to own this book.
HIGHLY recommend for people into eating clean and into cooking and camping (or want to be).
My family are avid campers. We take a minimum 2-3 weeks every year to get away, unplug, and enjoy being out in nature. Sometimes, are close enough to a town to get fresh ingredients for a meal, other times we eat what we catch, or we eat what we pack. It gets a little repetitious and while the experience is not meant to focus on food, it is nice to have delicious meals to look forward to that don’t take a lot of time and energy. That is why I have appreciated The Family Camp Cookbook. The backgrounds and insights resonant with many of the same things we have learned along the way. I love that the recipes are divided into wet and dry ingredients and what to prepare at home prior to departure, versus what to make at camp. Very helpful when prepping recipes!
To those who are curious or just getting started, there is a wonderful wealth of knowledge to equip you all the proper things for a successful adventure (including a sample three-day menu!). If you are more experienced, there is a creativity to many of the dishes and a variety of cooking methods. Maybe you are looking to shake up the routine or try something new. Either way, this book is an excellent resource for all levels of those looking to create yummy dishes out of their kitchen. As a side note, I did appreciate the photos of each recipe as well.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
Love camping and cooking outdoors? Want to learn some new techniques and organization hints? You’ll want to pick up The Family Camp Cookbook: Easy, Fun, and Delicious Meals to Enjoy Outdoors . This excellent cookbook has sections on organizing, planning a good camp kitchen, helpful equipment, and making the most of your camping experience. Of course, the recipes are what stand out, but the information in the early sections will make it easier to prepare these recipes successfully.
The recipes are written in the traditional form and are easy to follow. Most of the recipes call for ingredients that are readily available in mainstream grocery stores.
The thing that stands out is that the recipes are for dishes that almost everyone will actually want to eat. That includes both adults and children. Vikre has done an excellent job of choosing a wide array of recipes that will appeal to almost everyone.
There are also beautiful photographs – unfortunately, not of every dish, but at least some. It would be better if there were more, but that won’t make this a no-go. It is still an excellent cookbook, and campers as well as those who like to cook outdoors will benefit from having this on their bookshelf.
All told, this is a cookbook that will be enjoyed and will be used often by everyone who enjoys cooking while camping.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
This cookbook is beautiful! I loved looking through the different recipes and everything looked so good! I go camping a lot and I do think some of these recipes would be a little hard to pull off while camping. This would depend on the type of camping you do, but for me, I prefer to rough it a little more than these recipes would allow. That being said, I could totally see this being used as a cookbook at home. I made the one-pan picadillo. It was good and was easy to prepare at home. I think it would be difficult to prepare while camping because of all the different ingredients and the cooking time though. I would like to see prep time and total cooking time included in the recipes.
There are also alcoholic drinks in the book and some of them looked really pretty and easy to put together. I loved the author’s suggestion to use a Nalgene bottle to mix up the drink. It was a fun addition to the recipe.
Everyone who knows me, knows that I am Indoorsy. So why would I grab an advance copy of a camping cookbook. Well, I love cookbooks and this one peaked my interest with the cover and description. The recipes are excellent and the tips on how to pack and prepare your food are priceless. There are many great tips on meal prep for the recipes and how to pack some of the ingredients to not take up space. A practical break down of the different types of camping and the stoves you can use was explained in a way even I could understand it.
The recipes and photography are amazing. I am planning on making some of these at home, like skillet biscuits, beef stroganoff, eggs in purgatory, banana boats and so much more. Kids will love helping to make and prep these meals. It is a great starting point for family cooking. Highly recommend.
Fun and do-able camping cookbook - a must for lovers of the great outdoors!
It's a really good collection of friendly and fun recipes for the outdoors equipped with some good tips and advice to boot!
The importance of getting into the great outdoors is certainly a message to spread and this book to does the trick, not just recipes and chunks of advice about camping, this book also highlights the importance of prep, definitely important especially in the wild out doors but also great if you used this book at home, as the recipes are straightforward and easy for any cook whatever level to understand!
I really liked the "on the go" sections because I struggle to be regimented in my eating and so picking up light or nomming on the go meals is a must for me. The photo's are brilliant and I enjoyed the layout!
With thanks to netgalley for the free arc in return for my review, very good!
As an occasional camper who wishes I could camp more often with my 9 year old son, I really enjoyed this beautiful and well photographed camp cookbook! Though some of the recipes would never fly with my picky eater, many of them looked approachable and delicious. I especially liked the simple layout of the recipes and that many were uncomplicated- camping cuisine is best when it's pared down to basics and just plain delicious. I especially liked the inclusion of vegan recipes since so often camping cooking boils down to meat on a stick or in a packet- even when I'm not camping with my vegetarian and vegan buddies, I like to mix it up with some meatless meals. There is some repetition in the book of very similar ideas, but I liked the three day menu very much, and would definitely give more of the recipes a try on my next tent camping trip this fall!
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was around 3.5 stars for me.
There's a lot of information packed into this book! There's a lot of recipes and information about how to prepare for camping cooking. The recipes are "family" oriented in that they're largely recipes that kids will enjoy - pancakes, mac & cheese, etc. The recipes focus on having minimal ingredients and lists what prep to do in advance. But still some of the recipes seem complicated for newer cooks, especially those new to cooking over coals. The recipes are listed in both grams and cups, but some have instructions to cook until ready or similar, which isn't super helpful if you're new to cooking with fire.
There are some interesting recipes to try.
Honestly I’m not what one would call outdoorsy. Unfortunately for me, my son is obsessed with the idea of camping. Enter this cookbook.
There are recipes for every meal, including desserts and drinks. The author gives amazing tips on how to start some prep at home and then finish it at camp. The recipes are easy to follow and not just what one would call typical camp food.
Now I’ll never be as proficient as the author but I feel more prepared for the day we go camping.
Other great things about the book:
1- the pictures are wonderful.
2- there’s tons of helpful tips.
3- the author is hilarious. I could see camping adjacent to her in my hotel. I mean my son can’t expect me to sleep outside too right?
4- literally everything.
This book is laid out really nicely and has lots of great tips with lists of cooking tools needed to make these recipes camping. You would need to plan what recipes before hand but the book gives you a sample menu for 3 days as well. Most of the meals are skillet or foil packs which makes it easy. A lot of ingredients I wouldn't normally bring camping though but most are easy to come by. I do wish I had a physical copy of the book to see what the size is like as that would factor into whether I would actually bring it camping with me. The idea is really nice though and there are some great recipes.
I am a sucker for camping cookbooks, specially ones that are a little atypical. This one gives basics at the beginning on equipment, meal planning, and fire starting (the Dutch oven hints were helpful), then moves into types of meals. There were interesting recipes and spins on typical meals. I’ve read Vikre’s Camp Cocktails, which was also a good cookbook; this one impressed me in particular with its writing style, which was funny and frank. Planning on making some recipes soon.
Highly recommend when planning camping meals. Food was from scratch (yes!), but because simple and most importantly quick to cook at camp! (Because kids are great camping partners, but a long drawn out dinner prep is no fun for anyone). We made the “instant” strawberry and cream oatmeal (kids loved it and asked to make it at home) - which didn’t use instant oats so it tasted great, kebabs, campfire nachos, campfire bread on a stick, and tuna salad (another excellent recipe).
I really enjoyed this book. I tried the sweet rolls as my first footed Dutch oven recipe. It took me two tries. Note: use 2 pans! The 2nd try had fantastic results. Also, I made the chickpea salad with pita for a no cook vegetarian lunch for our scouts yearly planning meeting. They really loved it. (I served chicken on the side for those that just can’t embrace vegetarian). Folks asked for the recipe on this one.
I enjoyed the honesty of the author, the emphasis on prep work before the camping trip, and realistic expectations on time - so everyone can enjoy the outdoors, even the cook.
