Build a forest of food in your backyard and reap the delicious rewards for years to come!
This has a beautiful cover. And now I’m more determined than ever to grow a garden year around. About the book. So basically this is a “how to” which I thought wonderfully put. There is a introduction, section 1 and section 2. Section 1 is about getting started and section 2 is season by season preparation and growing. Just some of the how tos : • Setting up a rain barrel • Setting up a soaker hose • Building a simple raised bed • Building a Hugelkultur bed (which I found fascinating). • Plant fruit trees • Choose a planting method • Do pest management • Save seeds
The author shares her knowledge about the types of garden tools and garden beds and so much more. All of this gardening was done outside and I think every single thing had a photo. I’m going to have to say that this is probably my favorite garden book to date. I highly recommend it. I just preordered my copy. I hope this was helpful. Thanks Cool Springs Press via NetGalley.
You may think that gardening is a spring and summer activity. Four-season Food Gardening is out to prove you wrong.
From planning your garden to specific tasks for each season, the book includes all you need to know to keep your fruit, vegetable and herb gardens going all year long. There is also an extensive section on their favorite crops. Each crop has a full color picture or two, some history and instructions for growing it in your own garden.
I learned a lot of new edible food gardening information in Four-season Food Gardening! I love the taste of bok choy in restaurant meals. Now I know how to grow dwarf varieties in only 30 days in containers. I also would have never thought that winter crops like potatoes can be overwintered or even plucked from the ground during winter. There were surprises in the crop section too. Claytonia can be planted in basically any soil or location but is not invasive. It tastes like spinach but is much less finicky. It’s the perfect winter crop and may be a perennial here since winter temps rarely go below 20.
If you want to garden all year or are curious about new crops, Four-season Food Gardening is the perfect book to help you achieve your goal. 5 stars!
Thanks to Cold Springs Press and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Four-Season Food Gardening is an interesting and fact-filled collection of tips and techniques for extending harvest and culture for edible crops, in some cases over the entire year. Due out 15th March 2022 from Quarto on their Cool Springs imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
Author Misilla dela Llana spent her early childhood in the Philippines and grew up surrounded by mango, guava, and coconut trees and a tropical climate. Moving to the US meant that many of the specific fruits and vegetables her family was used to weren't viable in her new home, but many others were.
She does a good job of explaining lots of creative ways to extend growing seasons and plan succession plantings very carefully to maximize production even into deep winter. Many cole crops and root vegetables even become sweeter and tastier with hard freezes as long as they're protected by polytunnels or cold frames.
The author has included a selection of plant profiles for various herbs and vegetables which are suited to extended season growing. Profiles include botanical (Latin) name as well as common names and a color photo of the plant/seeds. Planting suggestions, spacing, culture, and habits are included in highlighted text boxes in the profile.
Five stars. Well written and useful. This would be a good selection for public and school library, gardening groups, smallholders, suburban/urban gardeners, and the home library.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I live in a region with cold winters, so I'm most interested in looking for ways to extend my harvest, but without having to invest in bank-breaking supplies. Four-Season Food Gardening gives some excellent tips on how to do that. It's such an easy and accessible book, split into each season and what to grow. I absolutely love the photography and helpful charts (most specifically the one that identifies what containers to plant certain species in).
I can't think of a better beginner's guide I've seen recently than this one, and I can see myself coming back to it again and again. Highly recommended.
Thank you to Quarto Books for giving me the opportunity to review this through NetGalley.
When it comes to reference books for gardening, I have to say that I think Four-Season Food Gardening: How to Grow Vegetables, Fruits, and Herbs Year-Round may be one of my new favorite guides. This book is a hidden gem. I’m used to gardening books having beautiful pictures, but I’m not used to every picture being this detailed, informative, and useful. There aren’t many pages in this book that don’t contain pictures, allowing you to see what the author is talking about, what a plan looks like, or how a specific method should look. The charts are also something you are likely to be constantly using in this book, especially for various fruits and vegetables. Overall, I consider this book a must for anyone growing a vegetable garden this spring!
Enjoyable book with a wealth of information for starting a garden. I was pleasantly surprised to learn some new to me, gardening tips. I’d never heard of the Hugelkultur method of bed for a garden and it’s kind of like a lasagna garden. I can’t wait to try it. So an easy read with some really great tips. Five stars!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher to look at and voluntarily left a review!
I'm an avid gardener and always looking for ways to improve upon last year's problems. This book is full of helpful information and is easy to read. I liked the layout and color coding behind things to quickly find lists and recipes. This is my first year attempting to compost, and last year our tomatoes had a problem, so hoping some of the tips in this book can help!
I stated gardening earnestly and steadily about twelve years ago, so I don't expect basic gardening books to be written with me in mind. I think that had I just been starting out, this would be a great book to help navigate me through the process. I did pick up a couple of bits of knowledge from this book. I thought the pictures were great.
In this easy to understand guide, readers will learn how to grow food during all four seasons. Not only does the author teach how to grow food outdoors in various types of climates, but she covers everything that you need to know about gardening. Whether you are new to gardening or experienced, this book has something for everyone. I liked the short and concise chapters and the graphics were very helpful. This book is perfect for those who are interested in self-sufficiency and sustainability.
In the future, I would like a book dedicated to greenhouse gardening and more information on how to grow food in climates with long, cold, and snowy winters.
I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be purchasing.
Four-Season Food Gardening by Misilla dela Llana is a gardening book based on what you can grow during the four seasons. The guide provides tips, photographs, advice, and everything you need to grow your garden even in the winter months. What a beautiful, treasure of a book!
Lovely, informative book. Great tips and excellent photographs. Just what I needed to help with my first vegetable patch. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

An excellent book to help any gardener extend their growing seasons virtually to year-round growing! Enthusiastic and helpful, this book is very well put together and provides such excellent information. Recommended reading.
This is fine for a general gardening book, but I was hoping for more details on extending the gardening season for those of us in harsh climates. It didn't really offer any insights in that regard.
An aesthetically pleasing book about gardening through all four seasons and in different conditions. I learned about ways to protect my garden through cold spells and when to plant various vegetables, fruits, and herbs.
I received access via Netgalley, but my opinions are my own. This book had some great and unexpected tips and insights which gives one confidence in their ability to grow a garden as well as do other important things in that realm they may wish like composting. However, there is not much in reference to dealing with extreme locals where the seasons are not as standard like here in Texas, but for most areas this would be absolutely perfect.
