No Boundaries: 25 Women Explorers and Scientists Share Adventures, Inspiration, and Advice

Rate this book
Meet 25 female explorers and scientists in these inspirational and poignant stories of exploration, courage, and girl power.

Along the way, they share lessons learned and words of wisdom sure to inspire the next generation of scientists, adventurers, and world-changers.

Track a volcanologist as she braves the elements atop an active volcano. Travel alongside a mountaineer as she battles stereotypes―and frostbite―to conquer the famed Seven Summits. Join a conservationist on her passionate fight to save lions. Dig with a paleontologist to uncover massive dinosaur fossils, bit by breathtaking bit. These heartfelt stories give readers an insider’s look at the amazing work female explorers at National Geographic―and beyond―are doing in the field to solve some of the world’s toughest problems.

Rather than detailing the lives of well-known women, this anthology celebrates lesser-known changemakers and outstanding women of diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and fields of study who are just beginning to make a name for themselves. Each profile is based on first-person interviews and comes paired with useful tips and relatable advice for budding explorers and scientists. Stunning photography and fascinating general interest information about the animals, places, and practices add drama and context.

No Boundaries sends a positive message to every girl who has ever dreamed or dared to go a little further. And although these explorers’ endeavors are quite adventurous, the lessons they share can inspire all girls, as well as boys, whatever their goals, skills, and interests.

This inspirational book for young people worked well for me, too! Of particular note was that the book used a lot of direct quotes from these women. For example:

Munazza Alam (from New York City) is an astronomer who studies the atmospheres on other worlds and says: “One of the things that has kept me going through hard times is to have an arsenal of strong women role models who inspire me.”

Wasfia Nazreen (from Bangladesh) has climbed the highest peaks in all seven areas of the world. As a mountaineer and an activist she observes: “The thing to realize is that no matter what we do, there will be someone who has a problem with our decisions. It’s very important that we focus on our path and know that anything is possible if we put our mind into it. It takes a lot of effort to stick to your dreams when there are many people telling you what to do. This is not just a problem for girl is Bangladesh, but all over the world. So, if you have a dream, believe that it is truly possible, and go for it!”

The photography and the text meld well and provide support for each other. Well worth the time.
A full 5*

Not in the book (but I would have made room for it)
Italian physicist Fabiola Gianotti became director-general of CERN (the research center for subatomic particles in Europe) In an interview in 2009 she reflected on why she decided to become particle physicist: “I came to physics from very far away. When I was a young girl, I loved art and music. I had been studying piano quite seriously at a conservatory and had taken courses in high school targeted towards literature, languages like ancient Greek and Latin, philosophy and history of art. I loved these subjects but I was also a very curious little girl. I was fascinated by the big questions. Why are things the way they are? This possibility of answering fundamental questions has always attracted me – my mind, my spirit, everything. So when I had to choose what I wanted to do with my life, I thought that physics could answer these big questions in a more concrete way than philosophy. I was right – in that I’m very happy now."

Adding HER story to this book!

I bought this great book for my granddaughter. On the book's back cover is the challenge: "Dare to dream big and add YOUR story to this book!" I hope one day she does. In the meantime and as a fellow author, I highly recommend this very enjoyable, inspiring read to all who might consider pushing the boundaries!

Fantastic book for girls AND boys interested in science and animals. I got this book for my nieces and nephew to get them thinking about ways to work with animals other than zookeeper and veterinarian. It gives them so many cool paths to dream about!

This is a beautifully put together collection of short, inspiring stories about women exploring different parts of the world, pursuing scientific questions or working to make the world a better place. You get to know just enough to appreciate each woman as an individual and also to understand what her passion and contributions are. Discipline-specific terms are well explained, so this book is accessible to anyone. The pictures are engaging, and each profile is accompanied by a spread talking about what you personally can do to connect with the topic that explorer/scientist is into. I love the encouragement to follow in their footsteps and also to find your own ways to explore!

An excellent collection of stories from women around the world of all different ages.
“Inside these pages, you’ll encounter women who’ve done, and are still doing, incredible things. You’ll read about their careers, read their words of wisdom. And learn about the awesome animals, places. And cultures they’ve encountered.”
I am so glad I have this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and am excited for my kids to read it.

An inspiring collection of mini-bios, all of women currently involved in science and/or exploration. I love how achievable this makes a career in science feel, and that's only partly because all of these women are alive and working now, and many of them are young. The bios talk about how they got started, what inspired them, and many give actionable steps for someone who wants to follow their examples.
