An ER doctor. A Fire Chief. Hilarity, danger...and true love conquering all.
All that Dr. Jenna Novak wants is some peace and quiet, and the leisurely pace of small-town living. And after five years in Haiti – hurricanes, earthquakes, gang warfare, and let’s not mention the scandal and embarrassment – moving to Serenity seems to be the best thing she did in a very, very long while.
However, Serenity turns out to be anything but quiet. Her baptism by fire is just the beginning; there are quirky events like Halloween Great Pumpkin Vigil, there’s surviving a runaway Burmese python, rescuing neglected dogs (and a puppy!), finding a missing child, rushing around the ER at the medical center...and there’s her neighbor, the incredibly hot Fire Chief Logan Cooper.
But why did things have to get so complicated with him? It was supposed to be something fun with an attractive, gray-eyed hunk (hey, is having the whole town place bets on your sex life also fun, or embarrassing?), so why is it suddenly becoming something...well, a lot more?
And why did her obsessive ex, a recovering addict, have to follow her into her new life...and will she be able to survive him?
Will Logan get to her in time, and rescue her...again...just one more time?
These are the first books I’ve read by Ms. Cruise and I enjoyed this series so much I had to read each book the day they came out as an ARC. I am looking forward to reading the “Carter Brothers” series next.
BOOK ONE Written in the third person, we are introduced to our main characters Jenna and Logan. There are also lots of fun side characters — neighbors, coworkers, and townsfolk. Everyone has something from the past that they don’t want to share and it seems Jenna has quite a bit. I’m looking forward to finding out what all is involved in her past and if she and Logan can build trust.
I did enjoy the banter between Jenna and Logan — especially how Logan basically states something rather than asking and Jenna seems OK to go along with it.
BOOK TWO We continue to learn more about our main characters Jenna and Logan. There are also lots of fun side characters — neighbors, coworkers, and townsfolk — involved it their lives. Logan is working on building trust with Jenna and it seems to be working to a point.
Ms. Cruise has a knack for telling about small towns — nobody locks their doors, neighbors stop by with welcome gifts of food & beverage, neighbors walking in your home without waiting for a response after a quick knock, and everyone knowing your business.
I continue to enjoy the banter between Jenna and Logan, love the “Smokey & the Bandit” reference, and those Grace Triplet Sisters are a hoot!
BOOK THREE Once again, Jenna has found herself in trouble with Logan coming to her rescue and this time Paisley and Tiffany are involved too. You can say that Jenna and Logan have a love/hate relationship but I feel it’s more love based on the way Logan takes care of Jenna.
Ms. Cruise has a knack for packing lots of action into a few pages thus grabbing your attention and keeping you entertained. She also has a way with dramatic cliffhangers which leaves me anxiously awaiting book four to see what kind of trouble Jenna can cause. And those wonderful side characters keep me in stitches — I don’t think I’d want to eat anything that comes out of Sergeant Wallace’s Tupperware. And the bet, OMG only in a small town does everyone bet the odds on that type of bet.
BOOK FOUR The fire chief finally breaks down some of the walls around the doctor’s heart and finds out a little info on what lead Jenna to relocate to Serenity. I love the camaraderie that is developing between the two of them and between Jenna and the community. When the community pulls together to put the Idlewild back together, Jenna comes to a realization. And things seem happy and status quo. Then the darn cliffhanger!
I am enjoying this series and Ms. Cruise has a knack for packing a lot of action and many emotions into a short story. I feel like this book has a little more happiness and good times than the previous three books.
BOOK FIVE Jenna and Logan are back and so is the angst, drama, and romance. Jenna’s ex-fiancé shows up unwanted again and this time Logan isn’t around. Jenna finds an angel in another Serenity neighbor who comes to help chase Kent away. There are two traumatic events that happen in the same night that Jenna and Logan attend to. Sergeant Wallace suffers a stroke and as they get him to the hospital there is a huge crash. This rocks Jenna to her core and she’s finally letting Logan back in her heart when Kent makes another appearance. Then, in true Clara Cruise style, there is a huge cliffhanger!
I enjoy how realistic this series is, the ups and downs of two first responders in a relationship, the small town feel where everyone knows your business, and how welcoming everyone is to newcomers— ie: Tiff & Celeste’s growing family.
BOOK SIX Jenna and Logan can never seem to be open with each other at the same time. Both of them are afraid, been hurt with past loves, and don’t communicate effectively. But gosh they have such hot chemistry!
So many emotions throughout the series and this book is no exception. Jenna and Logan have been thru so much since they met and so far they’ve managed to find their way back to each other. This time, Jenna’s ex has abducted her and it is at a time when Logan and her are fighting. Can he figure it out in time and save her?
One of my favorite scenes was the camping trip, or at least until the fight. The other scene you will find at the end. Both show how much they truly care for one another.

Loved this series as it came out and even better now that it is easy to binge read. Dr. Jenna Novak needs a place to start over after a fiasco in Haiti. Fire Chief Logan Cooper crosses paths with her frequently. The main characters and the townspeople are done very well, with backstories and wild scenarios like storms, snakes, and the kidnapping by her ex. The heat between Jenna and Logan is on and off again and again, but the intense feelings never die down. The fast-paced situations are incredible and heartfelt like discussing MS treatments with friends. They both have such tender hearts and make people feel at ease. Very well done.
