English title: This Is Ridiculous

This is the novel that the drama How Dare You is based on. While I haven't watched the drama yet, I'm very interested in checking it out after reading this book, as I really enjoyed it.

I didn't have high expectations for a book with only 30 chapters, but surprisingly the author manages to pack a lot in the story. Some of the chapters are incredibly long, so it definitely felt like longer than 30 chapters.

It was my first time reading a story with two levels of transmigration, so it was a bit hard to wrap my head around initially. Essentially the FL Yu Wanyin transmigrates into a novel featuring a cannon fodder FL called Xie Yong'er who also transmigrated into a novel, so while XYE believes she's transmigrated into a novel, she doesn't realize that she herself is a character in a novel. On top of that, there's a second transmigrator along with the FL who became the emperor, Xiahou Dan. If that sounds confusing, it is, until you get used to the idea after a couple chapters.

I won't go into too much detail about the story, but the plot was actually pretty good. The FL and ML recognize each other as mutual transmigrators in the very first scene and then work together to thwart XYE's plans and avoid their dismal fate in the original novel, where they were schemed against and killed by XYE teaming up the emperor's brother, Prince Duan. All of the actions they take are very logical for a normal person in their position. For example, since there are already 3 transmigators in play, they're not sure whether there are any more and take steps to test whether any other characters have also transmigrated.

Something else I wasn't expecting is that there's a good amount of political intrigue. As the emperor, the ML has to navigate the two opposing factions in court and keep them balanced so they don't target him, so the story really kept me on my toes.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

The plot was well written and contained more intricacy than I would've expected from such a short novel. To be honest, at times I was a bit lost trying to follow the FL's train of thought, but despite that the story was very engaging throughout. What confused me were the flashback chapters about Zhang San. I had no clue who this character was or that these scenes were chapters about the past for the longest time. But after a while, it became increasingly obvious who he was, and then I realized what was going on. Our poor ML, who had to deal not only with being transmigrated into a completely different and historical world as a middle schooler all by himself and then getting poisoned immediately afterwards by his "mom" :(

The author does a great job of throwing in comedic humors to lighten the story. I cracked up when XYE unknowingly betrays her modern origins by playing Canon in D on a guitar for her talent at a banquet, or when the ML favors her too much in front of the other concubines and the FL has to remind him to tone it down a notch XP

I also appreciated the constant references to the fact that they're characters in a novel. A lot of transmigration novels gloss over this fact, but it was very present in this story as the ML and FL have a lot of discussions about the og plot and or philosophize about the fact that all of the people they interact with are simply characters in a novel. It added a layer of depth to the story that's often missing in transmigration novels.

The complex character dynamics were written very well and part of what made this novel shine, imo. For example, while the FL collaborates with the emperor as a fellow transmigrator, she's at the same time hesitant to fully trust him and harbors some doubts about him due to some events. It's nice to see she acts in her own best interest and doesn't blindly trust the ML just because he's a fellow transmigrator. Also, the FL walks a fine line with Prince Duan where she needs to keep him interested enough in her to not take action against her but also not provide him with anything substantial that would work against her goals.

The whole cast of side characters was very memorable as well, from the og FL Xie Yong'er to the loyal Bei Zhou to the ragtag gang of scholars recruited by the ML, all of them felt like real people rather than unimportant characters simply there to push the plot forward. I got attached to some of them and was saddened when not all of them make it to the end. It's super impressive the author wrote such memorable characters, compared to some much longer novels where I can't say the same.

I loved the extra chapters featuring their return to the modern world and how they found each other there. I was hoping the author would treat us to this after the main story ended and she didn't disappoint. She knew what her readers wanted!!

Here are some of my favorite moments from the story:

lol Xie Yong’er played Canon in D on guitar as her talent at the banquet

Xie Yong’er began to calmly play the first verse.

Yu Wanyin buried her head low, trying hard to control her expression.

It was Canon in D.

“…Good, good.” Xiahou Dan said.

Lowering her head, Yu Wanyin happened to see his vigorous thigh-pinching motion, causing her to lower her head even further.

While playing, Xie Yong’er missed a note. But relying on the fact that no one in the audience knew the original song, she showed no shame and remained calm.

Yu Wanyin also started to pinch her thigh.

---------

“You have no idea how terrifying the atmosphere is when I attend court. Not a single minister talks about serious matters. One advises me on where to go for fun, another suggests something to eat. It’s like a massive end-of-life hospice care scene.”

“There’s nothing we can do.” Yu Wanyin said, “The original owner of this body drove away all the good ministers, leaving only those who humour you. The rest are in Prince Duan’s camp now, especially the military generals. Actually, you transmigrated a bit too late. All the big mistakes have been made. Even if you want to get rid of them, there’s no one to help you do it….”

----------

lol when the other concubines try to frame her of an affair in front of the emperor

“Take them both away.” Xiahou Dan interrupted.

The elderly palace servant, “?”

Yu Wanyin, who was watching the scene unfold, was dumbfounded.

Wait, I was just watching the drama, why are you fast-forwarding so crazily?

Yu Wanyin coughed lightly.

Xiahou Dan stopped and looked at her, “?”

Surrounded by palace staff, Yu Wanyin tried to convey a message with her eyes: Bro, you’re acting OOC. I don’t know what a madman is supposed to be like, but it’s definitely not this.

----------

awkward first meeting with the scholars XP

Some said that capable officials in the court were dwindling and that the Great Xia Dynasty was doomed, and that they wished they could knock some sense into the tyrant.

Others suggested that Prince Duan was a wise and capable ruler, yet some sneered that Prince Duan was only concerned with self-preservation and dared not step forward.

Some argued that Prince Duan was innocent and the blame lay with the tyrant who plunged the people into misery.

Some even accused Yu Wanyin of being a demon consort who brought disaster to the country.

The scholars were moved, looking at him with admiration, “You truly live up to your reputation. Since we’ve come to this point, may we know your name?”

Xiahou Dan elegantly shook his folding fan and replied, “My surname is Xiahou.”

The boat fell silent.

The scholars all stood up, staring at him, “Em… Empe…”

Xiahou Dan finished, “My given name is ‘Dan’.”

Yu Wanyin’s toes curled with embarrassment.

She should be under the deck, not on the ship.

Xiahou Dan then pointed at her, “This is Yu Wanyin, the demon consort who brings disaster to the country.”

---------

I love these very real discussions about being in a novel and questioning whether their world is also a novel

Yu Wanyin cut herself off, “Are you laughing?”

Xiahou Dan shook his head, “I’m just thinking about everything we’re doing happening in a book. It all feels a bit absurd.”

Yu Wanyin had considered this issue before, “But like Zhuangzi’s dream of the butterfly, how do you know the ‘real world’ outside isn’t another book?”

“Well, indeed, we don’t know.”

“Right, who can guarantee their own existence is real? I’m too lazy to dwell on that.” Yu Wanyin waved her hand as if dispersing the question like smoke. “Even if the ending is death, I want to do more before I die.”

---------

“Pregnancy?” Xiahou Dan shook his head, “That’s what everyone’s saying, but I haven’t touched her.”

Yu Wanyin’s expression turned complex.

“……Ah.” Xiahou Dan caught on.

Yu Wanyin patted him on the shoulder.

“So the reason she’s been pouncing on me like a starved tiger lately is to make me the lucky father?”

---------

LOL our FL is an experienced light novel reader

Xiahou Dan smiled. “Next, we’re going to act like this: I realise I still need your ‘divine eye’ so I restore your position as a concubine, humbling myself to beg for your forgiveness but you’ve endured so much suffering that you’re estranged from me and only open your heart to Prince Duan.”

“Is this a ‘Chasing wife crematorium’ scenario?” Yu Wanyin, well-versed in romance novels, summarised accurately.

Xiahou Dan, “?”

Xiahou Dan, “Uh, yes.”

---------

lol the FL trying to bring some modern thought to this historical novel

Facing the various expressions of the crowd, Yu Wanyin pondered for a long time before uttering, “I think, in this palace, comparisons of appearance and family background have always created an unfriendly atmosphere.”

Concubines: “?”

Yu Wanyin continued, “Moreover, historically, the average lifespan in the harem has been too short. This situation is detrimental to everyone. I have a proposal. We could introduce something like ping pong in the future, emphasising the spirit of competition in meaningful ways: friendship first, competition second, to improve physical fitness and care for mental health.”

Dead silence.

After a while, the small Beauty, who was holding her arm, asked softly, “What is ping pong?”

----------

lol on the empress dowager's death bed

His voice was absurdly loud, as if to ensure everyone outside could hear, “Imperial Mother, rest assured, your son is here!”

Yu Wanyin: “…”

Today, she witnessed acting at its peak.

Xiahou Dan managed to cry out with a quivering voice while flashing a malicious smile at the figure on the bed.

The first half of the story was the most enjoyable to me. I liked that the fact that Wang Cuihua and Zhang San transmigrating was never forgotten and there would be references to the modern world. Side characters like Xie Yong'er, Xiao Tiancai, A Bai, Bei Zhou, Xiahou Bo, and all the scholars were interesting and enjoyable for me. Also the reveal of Xiahou Dan's identity/past was done so well.

Although the author didn't hesitate to kill off characters I felt like killing off page and years later was a cop out. Other than this I still enjoyed the deaths of the other stories because it made the stakes of the story feel real. A fight for the throne is bloody so you can't possibly expect all your allies and friends to narrowly miss death each time.

The story at first seems lighthearted but eventually reveals another side as the fight for the throne intensified. There were some parts in the beginning where I thought the story was being too heavy handed in explaining things and other parts where you just have to go along with it like the secret guard amount. Mentioned that there were only about 20 or so them but throughout the story they were dropping like flies so there must be a lot more of them. But overall it was a fun ride and I loved how there was a catalyst for Wang Cuihua transmigration.

Wang Cuihua, typical corporate drone (as she calls herself), suddenly finds herself waking up in a novel she was reading about –The Demonic Consort, a cliche villain transmigration story – as the female lead of the novel within the novel, aka, as the villain of the novel she was reading. Talk about meta!

The female lead of the novel, Xie Yong'er, and the male lead, Xiahou Bo, are destined to be together, and for our MC, who wakes up in the body of Yu Wanyin, the original female lead, are the main hurdles for her to live prosperously.

Except, YWY already knows that Xie Yong'er is a transmigrator... and apart from that, much to her surprise, even the Emperor – Xiahou Dan, brother to Xiahou Bo and the main villain in both novels – is from the same world as her.

Safe to say, I loved this book! Not only is every character well written, even the plot is intricately built, and the romance builds slowly and steadily! There's no rush, no luck or chance, or deus ex machina to conveniently drive the plot.

Emperor Dan and Yu Wanyin, clearly from a modern society, have a modern romance in a historical setting which is very refreshing to see! Romance aside, the development of the characters going from being unused to historical society, to surviving in it, to wanting to make it better since they're in a position of power to do so is also brilliantly done.

On that topic, we have some really good representation here – a trans woman unable to live her authentic self, but finding acceptance in her family and friends; a cross dressing woman who wishes to serve the country, but can only do so dressed as a man. Brilliant cast of side characters, honestly.

I can't praise the book more, except that I will urge everyone to read it! There was one twist that I did not see coming, and it really explained a lot of minute details. That elevated the story honestly.

Lastly, kudos to the translator! They've done a brilliant job!

4½ 🌟

10/15/24 I wavered b/t 2-3 stars cuz for me it really was just okay - the ending kinda made up for it but the rest of it was very ... "what is the point?" Also the utter lack of trust and communication and where was the relationship development ... it just felt more like partnership survival than love - meh I dunno - even if it was sweet ten days after reading it my impression of this book just isn't that great.

I'm not mad I read it but this one really would be like "why bother" - would def not rec it to people.

C1 FL is Yu WanYin ML is XiaHou Dan (“irl” Zhang San)

C7 wait so is the emperor really just a transmigrated minor actor?
I don’t know how I feel about anyone or anything!

C8 omg so frustrating re: the crown prince and WTF emperor - what was even the point of this chapter?! Just child abuse? PAY ATTENTION TO THE KID. And wtf with this random empress

C9 uhhh why is the minister of revenue mentioning the empress dowager who is already dead “recognizing/rewarding” the scholar?
Wait so 8 was a random flashback of ML he’s not actually an actor but transmigrated young? But … no cuz ML & FL uproot the flowers…
Ugh what a mess
Also who is A Bei (really) & how does he know ML?!

10 😱 seriously what is up with ML (and his aversion to touch…)

26 after all that it almost seemed too “easy” for them to be together. Only obviously it wasn’t, cuz damn.
😜 also I want more A Bei

Valiente, fiel a si misma, inteligente y divertida!
Ya me habia cansado de que mostraran en los dramas siempre a la tipica chica medio mensa y fragil que se deja hacer de todo... gracias!
Recomiendo mucho su c-drama y su donghua que esta ahora en emisión.

I watched the part-1 donghua a long while ago and actually liked it very much but never gotten around to reading the book.

The part-2 donghua aired just before the TV adaptation, I did take a look but was quickly turned off by the forever wait (one ep per week).

With the TV adaptation now on the roll, last night I finally picked up the book.

Fell asleep on the last chapters of those side stories but gotta admitt the hype was well deserved considering the time of the book's publication.

A story with a light and comedic tone that somehow becomes one of the most interesting and tragic palace intrigue plots. All the characters are rather fleshed out and have interesting motivations. The antagonist is fantastic, and honestly my type haha it’d been interesting to see him get a redemption arc, but alas.

I fear despite the web translate I still genuinely enjoyed this (I read a few chapters that were translated by actual people too but not all of them had finished the entire novel yet). This was so fun, I had a lovely day reading this. Like I fear that I love romcom drama slop. This is my Bridgerton.

Read this after watching the tv series. Thoroughly enjoyed it and thought I already knew the outcome since I’ve watched the series, there are some small differences. The epilogue about the side characters was also pretty heart warming.

Overall a very entertaining read and the series is one I might rewatch at some point in time.
