In 2012, after experiencing numerous difficulties and disappointments within the Atlanta school system, Marta Obiols made the bold decision to remove her three children from public school. Intending to home school, the degreed educator eventually embraced "unschooling," which allows children to direct their own learning at their own pace in a supportive setting that fosters their natural curiosity.
Before long, the woman who never dreamed she'd be a stay-at-home mom, let alone raise her kids without school, was entrenched in a reality she never anticipated, but that provided unequaled rewards. And her children, suddenly free to play and explore a wide variety of passions such as horseback riding and archery, became students of life, absorbing and learning more than any school setting could have provided.
From making tough decisions to the unexpected blessings of co-ops, museums, and extended vacations, 18: An Unschooling Experience explores one family's journey to finding education-and happiness-outside the public school system.
Marta is a Catalan immigrant, former public school teacher, and current unschooling mother. With a dual degree in Elementary and Special Education from Blanquerna, Ramon Llull University in Barcelona, she’s spent the past nine years homeschooling and then unschooling her three children in Atlanta.
Make your own choices for you are an untamed cheetah, unleash yourself and you will find out your real strength, and the truth that you are not a tamed dog.
Marta was an educator, she soon became a mother of three. Marta, just like another individual had gone to school and gotten a job. But, words that came out of her second born about certain events had made her realise that degrading education quality of schools and teachers does not add up to her children's growth and she needs to take steps to not let incompetent teachers and messed up school environment ruin her children's future.
Followed by anxiety and fear, Marta gathered up enough courage to de-enroll her children from school with a determination to homeschool them by being a home stay mom along with battling financial issues, entirety dependent upon her creativity to make it through and successfully executed her plan to unschool.
Initially, Marta writes about her own struggles of life, from being an illegal resident of America to marrying Brian and getting legal resident rights and a proper job. She writes about her experiences at pre schools and the kind of competent and incompetent educators she came across during her teaching career. She is grateful towards few educators who made a huge contribution in jaume's (Marta's eldest child) early education.
Following recent tragic incidents, marta found some articles and study curriculum online to homeschool, that helped her set out a plan, she was also given wonderful advice on using free facilities provided by government to teach her children.
Marta later discovered that she has aphantasia, This makes it impossible to see images in her head when she reads. Afrika, her second born also qualified as a gifted child. Marta's homechooling techniques had made her children discover variety of outdoor activites they particularly enjoyed like archery, rock climbing, tree climbing etc which unfortunately regular educational system terribly fails to provide to students.
This book is a marvelous journey through Marta and her children's life, seeing as they grow up and become competent adults. What happened to sadie broke my heart. This book is a compelling read and a bundle of mixed emotions wrapped with harsh reality of education system and life's lessons of growing up. I would recommend you to read this book because, this was an experience of a lifetime.
This book is an autobiography. The author has written her life experiences on her own, turning it into a very beautiful book, we as a reader gets to learn a lot from the book, her experiences and lessons.
The main factor that the author has discussed throughout the book is the importance of home schooling, how it is better than children going to school and learning Nothing. The way she tried sending her children to best schools she thought were, but eventually took them out of the schools, as the school and teachers weren't upto expectations was something worth reading.
As a parents, we all tend to look out for best schools for our children, but many of us neglect to look for the experiences of teachers and how attentive they are towards the children. We all should watch out for teacher's experience and learning, their attitude and energy towards handling children. As teachers play very important role.
When Marta Obiols couldn't find a good school with all the facilities she wanted, she started home schooling for her three children. Through the whole storyline, she narrated the positive aspects of home schooling, and how it is to be done.
I loved the way she narrated all the incidents. In india, homeschooling is not so prevalent, and isn't a thing for qualifications for job. After reading this book, I guess we should also have this system. Through the book she has written her experience of it all, turning her home into classroom, giving wider angle to studies, taking children out for study tours, how education system needs to reform, problems of people staying in foreign countries and much more. Author has successfully conveyed her good ideas and planning.
This is a combination of memoir, kind of self-help, and bio. The author bravely tells her story over a period of more than twenty years. The book is broken down into easy-to-read chapters. Each chapter allows a reader to select the section they wish to read.
Here the author offers an example of homeschooling that could appeal to someone. Parents are often challenged by the problems that exist in many school systems. From poor education quality to threats of violence, from vicious and evil bullying to difficult distances to travel. There are now pandemics to consider as challenges to sending a child out to school.
If a parent has the capability and TIME to formally homeschool their child, then this can be a fine option. Some parents have the money to hire professional tutors and then there isn't much lost from the school setting. Here, the author offers unschooling as her option. Not to be witty per se but you send a child to school to get an education, so you unschool a child to get uneducated.
There are several important points that need to be made. School is not supposed to be fun. School is where children go to learn the basics of life. These include reading, writing, arithmetic, and social skills. A child isn't mentally capable of making logical decisions about what will be good for their future. If you ask any child, they will say doing nothing is more fun but unless you are the idle rich, you can't afford to do nothing.
I suggest that several of the educational concepts here need a warning. If you choose to follow some of these concepts, you may cause harm to your child.
A well-written book that tells the tale of one woman and her family. Taken as a biography, it is an interesting read. Many people enjoy reading about the lives of people different from them. This book could appeal to people who like to study the vagaries of human nature.
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it.
***I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. ***
Marta Obiols Llistar gives us an inside look at what life in an unschooling family can be like.
"An Unschooling Experience" really sums up this book well since it is more of a memoir and not an explanation, a defense, or a persuasive argument for unschooling. If you are on the fence about homeschool, I think hearing stories like this can be really helpful. I especially enjoyed hearing about how each of her children discovered their passion and how Marta worked hard to make that possible for them. And it was so fun to hear about their adventures in Spain!
When we think about children’s education, we usually categorise it into regular schooling and homeschooling, of which the latter may be radically unconventional for conservative, old-school (no pun intended) parents. But, there also exists a third style of education, which is known as ‘unschooling’. Essentially, it is child-led, meaning the interests and curiosities of the child take precedence over anything else.
18: An Unschooling Experience is a chronicle or record of a mother's (the author herself) experience of unschooling her three children. Compelled by the lethargic school administration, poor pedagogy, regular absenteeism of teachers, insensitive behaviour of teachers towards kids and dubious curriculum, Marta takes the monumental task of unschooling her three children, Jayme, Afrika and Konji who are in the fourth ,first and preschool grade respectively. In this book , Marta describes at length and detail how she successfully homeschooled her children. From turning dinning room into elementary classroom to running to museums, science centres, libraries, bookshop, co-operatives, teaching workshops and associations, the author pen downs her efforts to provide holistic education to her children. She unabashedly talks about the failing American educational system, the experience of being an immigrant, fear of loosing their Catalan culture and ever present fear of not giving best to her children. But this is not just a struggle diary of a mother to success rather it is a guide for all those parents who are apprehensive about institutional schooling and want to give best to their children at home. The author has attempted to described every possible process like unschooling children legally ,chalking out curriculum , designing pedagogy, utilisation of available resources , socialisation, management of time and money and comprehensive and continuous evaluation at home through her own experiences.
Overall, it's a very resourceful and enriching read for all those who are not satisfied with the conventional education system and want to give something refreshing to their children.
This is no ordinary book in the oftentimes extraordinary world of parents and homeschooling. Or as the writer calls her version of it, "unschooling".
As parenting and education books go, this one's pacing can only be described as "break-neck speed"! Page after page, chapter after chapter, the writer takes us on a whirlwind journey of parenting her children, while simultaneously "unschooling" them.
The writer, a stay-home-mom, makes it pretty clear from the get-go her purpose for writing the book. Her account of raising and educating her kids outside of the standardized education system in Atlanta, Georgia, where she resides with her husband and three children, is amazing to say the least!
Writer and super mom Marta Obiols' account splendidly takes the reader into her world, and the years she spent raising kids in ways even most of us, in today's sophisticated parenting world, would deem unorthodox.
From libraries to parks, Pizza Huts to Six Flags, this resourceful mom managed to sign her kids up for every free children activity she could find in Atlanta and beyond. All with the intent of learning from the "school of life", rather than the schools in our lives.
To say it took unflinching Herculean effort would surely be an understatement!
Written upon her eldest not just surviving, but thriving and turning 18, Marta's book takes you through a decade of a roller-coaster ride on how to undo what structured schooling often fails to do for our children: give them a good education.
While certainly, this former educator is living proof homeschooling and unschooling are more than possible, her relentless energy and determination might not translate easily into every family's circumstance.
And that is why this reviewer (also an educator and parent) is grateful Marta makes it clear at the start she's not writing a "how-to" book on unschooling. She is merely chronicling her family's exciting adventure into the fraught-filled but ultimately rewarding world of raising and educating children, on terms not dictated by societal conventions.
Still, every parent who finishes this book must put it down and decide: "Have I Marta's stamina to last through such a marathon as 'unschooling' my kids?"
For this reviewer, it's a definite "Errr..."! But hey, at least I know now there's irrefutable proof unschooling can be done. For that, I must thank and salute writer and mom Marta Obiols. And other parents just like her!
I'm twenty four and almost on the verge of turning into the silver jubilee age of twenty five where my thought process will take a turn once again. Whereas eighteen was the age where I received new set of expanded limitations compared to the previous one before I could turn eighteen. They say eighteen is the age where a kid steps into the adult zone and can make decisions regarding future on his/her own. But what holds as the most important part, is what you've learnt since 18 long years of life in school. By the mention of this term called school, a question rises on, what if, one never gets to attend the school and now has grown into an adult already. This book is a true piece of work which projects a real and serious thing from the view point of a mother which should actually matter to the people of this world. Author has jotted down her tale in a manner truly bold and commendable. Starting from the cover page of the book, the book displays the numerical form of number 'eighteen' and over the figure, there lies two male kids and one little girl who appears to be as a gymnastic pro. Kids are all full of dreams but only a proper path can help them lead themselves directly to their desired destination. This book, as the title explains, is about unschooling. The country is America and there are more than just riots happening where kids have been bathing in the pool of blood and no longer do the parents feel safe to send their kids to a school for education when they can teach their kids by themselves but that's not as easy as it appears to be. Right? To learn more about this very specially curated book, I would truly recommend to grab this read irrespective of the genre you always have been reading.
In this book, the author shares her own experience of homeschooling her 3 children.
The first few chapters are about the events that led to ultimately homeschool her kids. She has beautifully narrated all the events in an easy to understand language.
The author has highlighted the benefits of homeschooling and also its importance. There is a lot to learn from this book. What I really liked about it is that the author has conveyed her emotions along with each incident.
it was interesting to know that the author wanted to send her kids to school and also tried various schools. But, sadly none of them was good enough. Most of the teachers were not appropriately qualified and did not understand or care about the needs of the children.
I came across many heart touching sentences in this book. One of them is when the author said she found homeschooling her children very fulfilling.
Homeschooling is not very common where I live so this book has been a completely new outlook on education for me. I feel our education is quite good here in India.
The author has also explained the importance of extra-curricular activities which is not always emphasized as a part of education. Most schools focus only on academics and then the children are left with nothing but their talent to memorize information.
However, for those who live in places where education is not fulfilling, then this book will help you evaluate the other available options.
I recommend this book to everyone. It is a truly informative and heart touching experience.
18 is the personal story of the author as an unschooling mom. The title of the book is 18 as Marta's oldest kid is eighteen years old and she has a great experience as a successful unschooling mom. Marta lives in Atlanta with her husband Brian and three children. Her oldest kid Jaume didn't have a very good experience at the beginning of school years as teachers went on long leaves and substitute teachers were there. So, Jaume didn't get the chance to bond with one particular teacher.
Also, Marta's second kid Afrika complained about not learning anything at school as many times kids were given a punishment to sit with folded arms and head down at school. School shooting was a wake-up call and Marta went through many articles about homeschooling on the internet. She decided to take her kids out of the public school and registered them for homeschooling.
This book is a collection of various experiences of Marta's as an unschooling mom. Knowing her story has motivated me to homeschool my kids in the future as I am not a parent yet. I also think that kids can learn much via homeschooling and they can excel more in life. The way this book is written is amazing. It's insightful and thoughtful and it's gonna be of great help to parents who are thinking about homeschooling their kids.
18: An Unschooling Experience By Marta Obiols Llistar
My Review: I love reading non-fiction books. Recently I got my hands on Marta Obiols Llistar's story 18: An Unschooling Experience. This book will introduce you to the concept of homeschooling. If you have never heard about this word then this book has much in store for you.
In this book, Marta has shared about her journey. She immigrated legally from Barcelona to America. Even though she had different plans for life, in life unexpected things can happen with us anytime. Even though the author hasn't planned to give birth to kids yet she delivered her own babies. Even though she hasn't planned to homeschool her kids yet she did it.
If you want to homeschool your kids and are ready to spend 24x7 time with them then this book is for you. Marta was a successful working mom. At her jobs, she realized kids are not treated properly. They are not given the education and care that they deserve from their teachers. Marta took a step finally and removed her children from public schools and registered them as a homeschooler.
Her experiences in this book are worth your time. Even if you are not a parent or not planning to homeschool your kids, just go ahead with this book. You will definitely be amazed by the concept of homeschooling alone. Pace of the story is fast and I enjoyed reading this book. Reading this book is a different experience for me. I would like to suggest this to more and more readers.
This tale is about the teacher, Marta Oboils Llistar, who is disturbed by way of the local school machine and wants to do something about it. The author isn't always a big fan of the schooling machine and talks about unschooling and suggests it is reality with the consequences and the future it holds for an individual. We as everyday humans do not even consider unschooling for our youngsters however this e-book offers a totally clean image of how unschooling works for children and how it will shape their lives. I changed into quite inspired with this e-book because I have not examine much about unschooling and I became simply intrigued with all the statistics I were given from this ebook. Highly recommended to parents and students who want to pick out the direction of unschooling!
𝑻𝒊𝒕𝒍𝒆: 18: An Unschooling Experience 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓: Marta Obiols Llistar
𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘: "18: An Unschooling Experience" is a memoir written by the author Marta Obiols Llistar. This is the true story of Marta who is currently an unschooling mother. This book will help parents to get rid of their fears and will motivate them towards homeschooling. We all know that kids can excel more in life if they focus on the right subjects and they get the right education in their initial years of careers. In 18, readers will get to know about the author's journey of homeschooling her kids. From being a successful working mom to an unschooling mom, Marta has shared so much about her life. Her experiences are a learning for the readers and I am glad to get my hands on this amazing book. Cover photo of the book is nice. The title is perfect. Before reading this book, I always used to think of teaching kids at home at least instead of sending them to play school but I was never aware that someone has actually done this. I am proud of Marta. Whatever knowledge and experiences she has shared in this book will help many parents. Language used in the book is lucid. While reading I felt like Marta is narrating her story verbally to me by sitting right in front of me. This is a book worth reading and I like to highly recommend it to adults and parents.
When life gives you lemons, make a lemonade, Marta did just this. When her little girl told her that she wasn't learning anything at school, she was shocked. Her experience with American public schools was full of struggles and disappointing as the teachers kept changing and you could never be sure that children would have a good teacher and learn properly in the coming year.
After gaining some courage and practically judging the scenario, she decided to homeschool her kids. It is tough to take the road less taken by others, homeschooling had its own charms and challenges. 18 : An Unschooling Experience is a raw, candid and lovely memoir capturing the author's journey of homeschooling her kids.
This is a lovely short memoir free of pretense, laying down the author's experience in an unadulterated manner for the readers. This book is not a guide book that tells you how to homeschool kids but it presents a clear picture of what homeschooling looks like and is really insightful. Written in a simple, lucid writing style, the memoir is engaging and enjoyable.
This is the first time I have read about homeschooling, so this book was very insightful for me. It also brought out the shortcomings of public education system. I didn't know I could enjoy reading a short memoir this much, I loved reading it.

The title immediately caught my interest and as it's a book written from a mother's and teacher's point of view regarding the schools and child development and care I knew this was going to be a unique book. The writing is mind engaging and inspiring. What really captured my attention was the level of attention parents should have when it comes to choose a good school and the quality of education and care given to a child. I really loved how short most of the chapters were because that made it perfect for quick reading in between doing things with the kids!
Encouraging and uplifting experience. Definitely encouraged me to keep my kids out of school. I definitely recommend this one to anyone considering homeschool/unschooling.
Unschooling is one of those topics that is not that prevalent in India , for me therefore this was a really interesting read , because it presented to me a range of new possibilities and a whole new idea , the good part is author has not tried to show supremacy of one thing rather just explained there point of view which is a good thing .
The best part is its her own experiences and even she accepts that it wasn't the part of plan but these things eventually happened and because she has her own experience she is able to share that story and help others .
The story has been told by various incidents which makes it even easier to understand and grasp for new knowledge . For me it was a really interesting book because the concept was new in terminology but was highly relatable with all the basic values and because of the way it was explained it made it even more better .
