*Sometimes the Journey Starts After the Adventure is Over.*
They called him Sven, the Shatterfist. At least they used to. Back before the war with the Dark Lord. He was an S Ranked Adventurer. A man who grew up poor. Now he owns the Adventurer's Rest. A tavern he runs with his two companions. The magic girl Ash and the half elf bartender Lloyd. They're not quite the family he was born into, but they’re the family he’s found. In a world that's moved on, they'll help him find what he's lost. Himself.

Loved it from start to finish. Hidden histories revealed, plots unfolding, and a mystery slowly taking form. The characters feel real and relatable and the story really tugs at the heartstrings and gets you invested. Looking forward to book 3!
I liked the dialogue from the first book enough to keep reading the second one. Unfortunately, the story (at least in my opinion) is run of the mill, and though this book is classified as LitRPg, it doesn’t have any kind of mechanics or skills progression or whatnot. For a pure fantasy standpoint, I was hoping for a bit more. Still, it is a book, and the author can definitely write. So 3 stars
The Retired S Ranked Adventurer: Volume II (Light Novel) (The Shatterfist, #2) by Wolfe Locke is the sequel to the popular light novel The Retired S Ranked Adventurer. The story follows Sven, a former S-ranked adventurer who has retired from the adventuring life to run an inn. However, Sven's peaceful life is soon interrupted when he is forced to return to adventuring to save his friends and family.
The plot of The Retired S Ranked Adventurer: Volume II is well-paced and engaging. The story is full of action, adventure, and suspense, and it keeps the reader hooked from beginning to end. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the world-building is detailed and immersive.
One of the things that I enjoyed most about The Retired S Ranked Adventurer: Volume II is the way that it explores the themes of redemption and second chances. Sven is a character who has made mistakes in the past, but he is given the opportunity to redeem himself and start a new life. This is a powerful message that I think many people will be able to relate to.
However, there are a few potholes in the plot of The Retired S Ranked Adventurer: Volume II. For example, the villain of the story is not very well-developed, and his motivations are not entirely clear. Additionally, the ending of the story feels a bit rushed.
Overall, I enjoyed The Retired S Ranked Adventurer: Volume II. It is a well-written and engaging light novel that explores some interesting themes. However, there are a few potholes in the plot that prevent it from being a truly great novel.
**Pros:**
* Well-paced and engaging plot * Well-developed characters * Detailed and immersive world-building * Explores the themes of redemption and second chances
**Cons:**
* Villain is not well-developed * Villain's motivations are not clear * Ending feels rushed
It is tempting to describe this author's writing style as "mature" but with the connotations that word carries in current society, it would leave the wrong impressions. These stories are refreshing to me as an older mature/adult fantasy reader. The vast majority of new fantasy / sci-fi works these days cater to a very adolescent or fantastically fantastic taste of fantasy. This story does not do that. The author offers characters that have the feel of having depth in substance, even without extensive background or character development explored within the stories. They don't seem to get lost in archetypes, tropes, and cliches, or obvious fan service. They take a much more mature and adult approach to telling a story that isn't all pursuit of adolescent intoxication fantasies and wet dreams of empowerment. The writer obviously cares a great deal about how they tell the story and what they convey. They are rough around the edges, like any new or part-time author, but they avoid many of the pitfalls that I see similar authors make. There was only one instance in this book where I scene felt off, forced, or inexplicable to me, and that was the funeral scene. So far, both installments in this series have been very gratifying to read, and I look forward to the next volume of this series. There are no new or original stories, just new perspectives that they are told from. This author manages to share a pleasant and uncommon perspective.
N.B.I started, then put this book on hold for a few days because I wanted to read "Beware of Chicken Vol 2", and I couldn't wait until it was edited and proofread. So in a fugue, I read the Royal Road version. I think this has slaked my thirst, and it's back to my normal schedule.
I was thinking of dropping the series, but at the end (as before) I was convinced to stay, and will probably pickup the sequel. Any time that "magic girl" opens her mouth or has a POV, I really want to drop this crap. Does the author feel I'm some anime/ manga otaku? And I like this crap? I think your could have nuked her POV from the book and nothing would have changed how book three answers the mystery.
Also, I'm sure all three books could have been published as one.
First and foremost. Read this series!!!! It's damn good and keeps getting better. The art is awesome, too.
This book feels more polished than the first one, although that was good too. I have to say.... that ending was amazing. I'm still in tears. So freaking good!!! And the dwarf character you wrote in at the end has got to be some of the best shit I've read in a long time. Perfect counterbalance to the heavy stuff and executed really well. I hope he sticks around as a character... but it's almost better if he just moves along. The last fight gave me the feeling I got watching the first avengers movie as a kid, and that's not a feeling easily achieved as old as I am now. Well. Fucking. Done.
This time around Sven is starting to suspect that there is something wrong with the guild and things in general. His two closest friends try to use a spell to see what happened when he died but he woke up just before they could see who killed him. Things get exciting and then Sven remembers everything but still doesn't understand that he's been dead a long time. He tells them everything he remembers which only goes back a month...really good story and look forward to the next book.
An awesome premise in the first book continues into the second book. The travels of Sven become more interesting and while initial questions were answered and Sven regains memories, new questions are asked. Who was the dark lord? What happened? Cant wait till volume 3!
So, First it's better then the first. Not by much, but still better. The first sat to long with development of characters and over plotting. But this one narrowed to a good plot, and have good development to characters. If this continues i believe book 3 will be the best yet. And only a few editing mistakes and spelling errors. Not enough to be distracting.
Each book is a complete arc but feels too short. That is a compliment to the author also as I find myself waiting for the next installment. On the other hand I feel we are missing out on a lot of depth as the story seems to skim the surface of the other characters.
Wow the story is freeking great. I do wish i had a better sense of the scale of this world or a map. It seems large and as if we only read of two towns and a tavern. But that small scope of a large world does not reduce the story at all. There is much more to see in this story and of this world, I can't wait for the next addition.
It’s decent. The story moves along and it’s nothing earth shattering but entertaining enough. Still no real motivations obvious for the characters and apart from 2 or 3 there really isn’t much character development. There does appear to be something going on behind the scenes and I have hope that it can be teased out in a satisfying manner.
I thought, after the end of book one, that this series was ready to start. I was wrong. The hesitancy, the obvious issues, all of it is just be recounted ad nauseam. Maybe book three will start storytelling rather this string of endless hints pointing at a big old sign that everyone plainly sees.
People keep thinking Sven is a fake, even when he shows prodigious power. Things unfold that gradually help him remember what happened. Unfortunately the powers that be want him under their control. Battle, escape, and loss ensue. I like the action, humor, and mystery. I look foreword to the next book.
After re-reading book 1 in this series, I couldn’t resist reading on into book 2. (And thank you to the author/publisher, for producing the audio wide, which meant I was able to borrow from my local library.)
This was on par with book 1, fast-paced, full of action, adventure, magic, friendship, fierce loyalty, slice-of-life vibes, and more. A mystery from the first book was revealed, and while this one wraps up pretty neatly, I do feel a need to read on as I’m hooked on this world.
Features excellent world-building, humor, and tugged at the heartstrings. Very well done. Loving this style of writing.
4 stars.
Audio: The more I listen to this narrator, the more she grows on me. Talented, she possess a wide range, to the extent that this often sounds like a ‘full cast’ production. Well done. 5 stars.
One of those maddeningly inconsistent books. The best parts were around the tavern/inn and the worst were generally the flashbacks. The wildly varying power levels of the main characters didn't help, (in one scene mooks are easily despatched and in the next they present a threat that could defeat them).
He stars to have a memory and gets a headache and doesn't remember. He.is called to the.Capitol to.prove he is still and S Ranked Ranger and To renew his.license to teach. He gets there and everything is strange. Read to see what happens next!,
I gave the first one five stars I gave this one for stars because I felt that it was a little on the short side and could have done with some more flushing out of the middle there. But overall still enjoyed the book and looking forward to book 3
Book 1 and 2 were great. Leaves you on cliffhangers. Looking forward to book 3 when it comes. I'd suggest waiting for the trilogy but fun short story if in the mood for a quick read.
I loved the book, it was a fun continuation of the first novel. I also liked the increase in pace. Please have a look at the formatting though, the bigger and smaller font was tedious to deal with
I like where the story is going, but I am so confused!
Editing errors were frustrating and confusing, but a good story was still able to shine through. Are the authors rushing or something? Please give due time to good editing!
The continuing adventures of Sven the Shatterfist!
Wow! Even better than book one, the adventure continues, revealing more of what made Sven who he is. The tale is tightly woven and has no rough spots, or boring ones! I can’t wait to read on.
I'm really enjoying this series. This book included. I read this in one sitting. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to the next one. This book is definitely worth reading.
Volume 2 clarifies much of the mysteries of the first while still leaving much to be explored. The world expands and the stakes grow with it. A thoroughly enjoyable read that leaves you eager to continue.
