Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

Laura Martin was born and bred on the South Coast of England into a family of two loving parents and a spirited older sister. Books were a feature of her life from early on. One of her earliest memories involves sitting with the family on a rainy Sunday afternoon, listening to the exploits of a clumsy but lovable stuffed bear and his assorted cuddly friends. Laura's first ambition was to be a doctor, and in 2006 she went off to Guy's, King's and St Thomas's Medical School in London to study medicine. It was whilst she was earning her degree that she discovered her love of writing. In between ward rounds and lectures Laura would scribble down ideas to work on later that evening and dream of being an author. In 2012 Laura married her high school sweetheart, and together they settled down in Cambridgeshire. It was around this time that Laura started focussing on the Romance genre, and found what she had always suspected to be true: she was a romantic at heart. Laura now spends her time writing Historical Romances when not working as a doctor. In her spare moments Laura loves to lose herself in a book, and has been known to read from cover to cover in a day when the story is particularly gripping. She also loves to travel with her husband, especially enjoying visiting historical sites and far-flung shores.

Emma and Guy have known each other for years, having become acquainted in Egypt where her father's business and Guy's shipping interests came together. But some time ago, Guy was summoned home to England after his twin brother was killed in the war and his sister wrote to him of their father's illness and the sad state of affairs on their estate. When Guy reaches home, he comes to realize that the state those affairs are in, are now requiring him to marry a woman he doesn't love in order to save his family.

When Guy left Egypt, Emma felt bereft and lonely. After her father's death, she returns to England and first sees Guy again at a London ball. It is as if no time has passed and they fall easily into their old friendship from their time in Egypt.

Guy has long known he loved Emma, but has never been sure of her feelings. As they spend more time together and Emma's feelings come to the forefront, the conflict that Guy feels grows deeper. Is there a way to save his family and still be with Emma?

I loved both Guy and Emma's characters and the tension between them that escalated as the story went on. I liked the way Emma interacted with Guy's soon-to-be fiance' in such a mature manner, as well as the character of Guy's sister Sophia and her mother figure, Cecilia. It was hard to leave their world when I was done reading the book. Unlike some of the other heroes I've read in different books, this 'guy' was a special keeper.

I quite enjoyed this book.
Lady Emma returns to England with her companion after her father's death, she knows little of the ton having been raised in Egypt by her father after her mother's death when she was a toddler. Lady Emma knows no one in London, until she spies a friend of the fathers at a ball, and rekindled their friendship.
But Emma discovers Guy is about to get engaged, and why, just as she realises she loves him. He is marrying to help his family, but it's breaking his heart to do so as he's loved Emma in secret for years.
This book worked well, and I got invested in their lives, and then it suddenly drops into the epilogue and finishes. Hence not 5*. The ending is too abrupt for my liking, there are too many loose ends....

I had a very hard time getting into this book, but I am glad I did. The start where old friends Lady Emma Westcombe runs into Captain Guy Fitzgerald sets up as a friends-to -lovers book with the overexuberant Emma as the out of place debutante who needs a guiding hand. (She pushes a peer over a railing when he gets fresh.)
Then it jumps to star-crossed lovers where he is engaged to another to save his family.
It finally settles to frustrated lovers who want to do the right thing for each other but can't resist their passion.
HEA seems rushed when it took so long to get there but it works, and they are off to new adventures.
