I received a copy of this book from the author, however, this in no way influenced my opinion. Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy.
So, firstly I just want to say that this review will be formatted a little differently than my other reviews as this was an anthology, that is also why there is no CAWPILE rating. AESTHETIC is a collection of 25 dark academia short stories that span across many genres including fantasy and sci-fi. Overall I would say that I really enjoyed this however there was ableist language used in a few of the stories which made me uncomfortable. I’m going to be doing short reviews for a couple of the stories.
Story One: Scorched Planet School of the Arts
This is the first story in this anthology and it completely drew me in. The unique formatting of this one is what made it stand out for me, it is formatted as a course catalog so different courses are listed with the modules included in that course.
Story Four: Sweet Green Freeze
So, I have to say this was absolutely my favourite story out of them all and I would love to read a full-length novel with this story. The plot of this had me gripped, in this short story we follow Eleanor who decides after a discussion with her friend to poison the teaching assistant that she has been seeing. However, soon her mother ends up hospitalized with the same symptoms. The plot twist in this really took me by surprise, it turns out that Eleanor’s best friend poisoned her mother and then told the police that Eleanor was the one who poisoned the teaching assistant and her own mother.
Story Six: Admissions
This one really shocked and disturbed me, as we start off not really knowing what’s going on but then as we get further into the story it is revealed that students have to fight and kill each other in order to gain their place at university.
Overall this was an intriguing YA/NA anthology with some unique short stories. If you like dark academia then definitely think about picking this one up.
