Alana of Adachia is the daughter of a blacksmith in the Gadalian tribe. After decades of war, the Gadalians live in territories throughout the Itruschian Empire, ever since a truce allowed them to produce weapons and art for the region. But when Alana turns fifteen, tensions flare again. The Empire decides to eradicate the Gadalians and sends soldiers to attack her village, killing most of the men and forcibly marrying the women. Hidden deep in the forest, Alana and Kassius, her best friend, plot their revenge on the persecutors who have destroyed their village. Legend has it that the Sword of Ares, a magical weapon wielded by the god of War, will have the power to defeat the enemies of the Gadalians and unite all other tribes in their cause. But where is the Sword of Ares now? Is it nothing but a myth, or is it a very real power that can come to their aid? Most importantly of all, can Alana and Kassius find the Sword before the Gadalians have been wiped from the face of the Empire?
I cannot begin this review without telling you about the beautiful language and the compelling story building. It is as if she uses a brush to paint her words and you as the reader is painted as she tells the story. There is no way that you can set this novel down. As I read the beautiful maiden on the cover keeps calling to. The world building is phenomenal. The twists and turn just continue to build as if a wild hurricane is heading towards the painting and you as a reader are attempting to save the maiden but she does not need saving, she is there and she invites you the reader to participate in the story. The novel is one you will not be able to set it down, I just want to know what comes next? and when? Please don't make me wait too long!!!!
The setting is in ancient times and speaks of a period when a regional governor uses his army to murder the men of a subject peoples.. all in the name of revenge over perceived past wrongs. A prophecy speaks of an uprising using the sword of Ares to destroy their enemy. The main problem appears to be that this sword is lost and suspected of having been destroyed. Alana and Kasha find the vital components and seek to recreate the weapon... but they unknowingly release an even worse enemy that will seek to crush them all
The story has so much potential. But it just drags and the way its written... it's like it cant decide between modern language and old language and has turned into this very difficult to follow and mashed up 4 eyed, 6 nosed baby with legs where ears are supposed to be and ears where legs are supposed to be. I mean you can figure out out but it takes away all of the joy. couldn't even force myself to finish it.
