Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.
This was pleasant and engaging. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows Supergirl—alongside an alien child—on a cosmic journey, weaving together themes of justice, vengeance and resolve.
In this first chapter though, it focuses on Ruthye’s perspective as she tries to go on a dangerous mission. I picked this up mainly because I was drawn to Bilquis Evely’s art. Needless to say, every page felt like stepping into another world. Regarding the characters, Supergirl remains a badass, as we all know. Ruthye, on the other hand, is fiercely resolute, and her innocence never fails to come through—which I appreciate. After all, I did not want to read about a kid seeking vengeance while dismissing her child-like behavior just to portray a strong-willed persona.
Overall, a nice introduction to a promising story, but not entirely remarkable.
HAPPY SUPERGIRL DAY COMING BACK FROM THE DEAD TO SAY THAT YOU SHOULD GO WATCH IT!!! DON'T LISTEN TO THE INCELS’ CRITICS!!! IT'S ACTUALLY A GOOD SUPERHERO MOVIE. OBVIOUSLY IT'S NOT GONNA BE A FILM LIKE INTERSTELLAR LOL. ANYWAY, FEMALE CHARACTERS DESERVE SUPERHERO MOVIES TOO!!
This was a decent start. I love most of King's stuff but this didn't blow me away. I did like his supergirl and she's a badass, especially the end. But not in love with the world we're on but we'll see how it goes.
Please, never ever put a piss-yellow-coloured hue over a whole comic book. Every single page looked urine soaked and bland. The art, was solid, but you can't tell that because there's this horrible tinge of yellow dowsed over it all. The story itself is meh, and reads like Cloonan's Wonder Woman a bit, just replace talking Squirrels with Krypto, and that's basically all there is to it. I don't get Tom King at all; His stories aren't superhero stories, they're depressing wannabe-edgy Vertigo books from 20 years ago.
First comic down and many more to go! As a lover of supergirl I thought it would be in my best interest to start reading with a comic book that aligned with her story.
This was a very calm/quick and easy start but I which this could’ve been longer even though it’s the first out of eight
I have had very little exposure to the Supergirl character. I got this because Tom King is writing it. It's fairly wordy (not necessarily in a bad way) and it reads, looks and feels like epic science fiction/fantasy. Unexpected but a pleasant surprise.
Estoy enamorada del arte de esta serie de Supergirl. La historia parece que va a ser sencillita pero es un lujazo disfrutar del arte de Bilquis Evely y Mat Lopes.
As a fantasy geek, I'm digging this take on Supergirl. The art is pretty cool and its got this TOR publications vibe to it. However it would be nice if they had her new 50s housewife outfit in this title, but thats just a personal preference. Also Hungover Supergirl is WGW !
Really satisfying to see an omnipotent character as supergirl in this new world with new rules about her powers. I’m definitely going to read the whole mini series. Love the fact that supergirl is with Krypto :)
the scene where ruthye is talking about how she lost her beloved father and kara’s just looking at her was so heartbreaking i can’t wait to see it be executed in the movie
I really wanted to enjoy this comic but I just didn’t. I’m new to comics and this story was recommended for people getting into comics but I just found the story boring.
I was confused on why Ruthye was the narrator of the story and why the story was more focused on her than Supergirl. I get Supergirl was trying to teach Ruthye a lesson but I barely knew Supergirl as a character I felt like knew nothing about her by the end of the story.
I didn’t like Ruthye’s dialogue. She went on and on and I found myself wishing it would just end already.
I’m also just tired of the whole “killing is wrong.” This dude went to multiple different planets and committed mass genocide and felt no remorse and in the end they decided to show him mercy. And what happened to the other aliens that joined him in destroying planets they just walked away scot-free.
I will say the only thing I did enjoy was the art style. It was beautiful and I loved starting at the art work.
The eye-candy art kinda makes the character assasination worse. Not enough people say Tom King only knows how to write the same type of protagonist. From Batman to Mister Miracle, everyone is always an edgelord anti-hero who has to be forced to do the heroic thing. None of his protagonists are superheroes if they begrudgingly have to help others. Every. Single. Time. Pacing a comic well and getting a good artist should be bare-minimum. But Tom King knows what he's doing to make his stories popular and different. Just not good. I feel he'd only write a good Jason Todd. That's pretty much it.
This is not Supergirl. Sure, Kara has one of the most disorganized character histories in comics, but that's honestly even more of an excuse not to butcher it when giving a character a fresh start. Kara shouldn't be an anti-hero. DC has too many of those. The Super Family's crowded and individually self-reliant overhaul has been so destructive to the "family" aspect of it all lately. And Superman's immediate family has made him more distant from Kara than ever. They're trying too much to make every woman a sassy girlboss, and it just doesn't work. It's not a bad thing to have one character be pure-hearted girl scout. And it's definitely not impossible to write a character like that well. The world needs Supergirl. I haven't seen her in a while.
This reminded me of New 52 Wonder Woman, but with a distorted twist. I mean... in what universe does Kara Zor-El "celebrate" a birthday by getting blackout drunk alone with Krypto? Like... that's actually kinda disgusting to me. It annihilates Kara's opinion of Clark in a way that almost offends me. I can't believe the world thinks this is Supergirl now. That makes me pretty sad.
For how badly Injustice violated Superman, I have to say... it's also probably one of the best Supergirl adaptations of all time now. Next to this? No competition.
Admittedly I’m a really new dcu fan and this is technically my second comic read ever, so I don’t think my opinion means much 😅
I really liked it. Again, I’ll admit that I’m reading this because I want to see the movie, but I thought it was really enjoyable. It’s very very eye catching and Ruthye’s over professionalism when faced with Kara’s messiness is fun to follow. The set up is also fairly simple, and it’s refreshing to see a revenge plot spearheaded by female characters. I wish we have some introduction as to what planet Ruthye lives on, but I could just be lacking in knowledge when it comes to dc lore. I’ll let it go, it doesn’t bother me much. I have to admit, I struggle reading fight scenes in panel form so I had to go over a few pages, but not a big deal.
From the perspective of someone who’s never read any other comics about Supergirl, Superman, or any other heroes other than Batman, I didn’t find my lack of knowledge to be a drawback. I mean, you don’t typically pick up a comic with a hero plastered on the cover without knowing a little bit about who they are, but it also didn’t really go into her deep lore, which is nice. New comic reader friendly, I’d say. I haven’t read the other issues yet, but I’m looking forward to it!
This is the first Supergirl comic that I have read and I enjoyed it! I got this as a bonus for seeing the Supergirl movie in theatres which I highly recommend you go do! The movie is great!
Anyway, back to the comic. It’s clear where the inspiration for the movie came from. I like Krem’s design in the comic more than the movie.
The comic is interesting in the fact that it presents a superhero who is hurting from the events of her past. She still wants to do the right thing, but even superheroes need to take time to blow off some steam. Another thing that is cool about this one is that it shows a Kryptonian being hurt by normal weapons. That’s not usually something that is shown unless Kyrptonite is involved. The lore surrounding the suns is cool to see played out.
Issue #1 of Woman of Tomorrow does its job as it makes me want to read the rest of the series.
